    Clogging Arteries on Labor Day
    2007-09-03 23:33:00
My body really wants to cry from what I did to it at dinner time tonight. But it's Labor Day, and that means the prerequisite American dinner of grilled hot dogs (Sahlen's), macaroni & cheese (out of the box), baked beans (doctored up naturally), and a carbonated drink (generic cola). The only healthy part of this entire meal was the whole wheat bun.We enjoyed our feast from the peaceful tranquility of our front porch, while watching our neighbor slave over painting his house. The more healthy eating lifestyle resumes tomorrow.

    Labor Day
    2007-09-03 23:01:38
Two of our friends just had two girls placed with them about 10 days ago, so in order to help them get to know some of us, we had a picnic. It was a hot two hours and Dominyk became obsessed with pop. He had 2 and a half, but it wasn't enough. He could not stop himself. Tony wiped snot all over me and spit relish on me. It takes a lot to humiliate me, but they were especially obnoxious today.I guess I figured that at some point we could transition without all these behaviors, but Jimmy, Tony and Domink have had one of the worst weeks they've had in a long time. They are almost impossible to be around. My head is still pounding from the grocery store and it's hours later. But the people we were with are patient and we had enough fun to make it worth doing. It will just be nice when the next week or two are over, a routine is established and everyone has transitioned.

Nice D, JJ. Cubs win In case you were asleep for the last 24 hours. From the Trib: Lee's homer and another solid day by the Cubs' bullpen led them back from a four-run deficit, helping them hold serve in the National League Central, where wins by St. Louis and Milwaukee already were posted on the creaky, old scoreboard. "What a huge win," manager Lou Piniella said. "That's our biggest of the year. Clutch, clutch by Mr. Lee. We talked the other day about the big guys getting going in crunch time, and, boy, here in September, they've gotten to it." Lee's eighth-inning blast off Chad Qualls was his second in as many days, giving the Cubs their second straight series victory and leaving them 1 1/2 games ahead of the Brewers and two ahead of the Cardinals. "It was a rough game out there today," Lee said. "We were fighting and clawing. But to come back and steal the game like that, it'll give us a big lift." The Cubs stole it thanks to a big diving catch by Jacque Jones to end the ei

It's Labor Day Weekend: Do You Know Where Our Country Is?
    2007-09-02 21:31:47
The topic below was originally posted on my blog, the Intrepid Liberal Journal as well as the Independent Bloggers Alliance and Worldwide Sawdust. One autumn evening several years ago, I needed to blow off steam after a stressful day at work. I was fed up the way employees often are in their jobs. You know that toxic feeling when your superiors are overpaid while contributing little to the effort other than gratuitous criticism, while those on your pay grade won’t bust a nut to get the job done because they know you will? How often have you felt that way? I felt underpaid, under-appreciated, was mad as hell and ready to drown my anger in beer. It was self-pity really as plenty of people in this world had it far worse than me but I wasn’t in a perspective mood.So I walked about forty blocks south from my day job in mid-town Manhattan to clear my head until coming across a dive bar with sports on television and hardly any patrons. Perfect, that’s just what I wanted. Typically, I’

Tax Freedom Day: A Different Kind of Labor Day
    2007-09-01 07:00:00
As Americans prepare to celebrate the Labor Day and enjoy their day away from work, it is worth reflecting on how we spend the fruits of our labor—in particular, how much we spend on government in the form of taxes. Of course, Labor Day is not intended to have anything to do with reelection on tax burdens (click here for a history of the holiday from the Department of Labor). But any serous discussion of Americans' work should take into account the benefits we gain from working, including the ability to support ourselves and the ability to support our government—with the latter sometimes interfering with the former. Every year we calculate Tax Freedom Day, the day on which the nation has earned enough income to pay its total tax bill—federal, state and local. This year, Americans worked until April 30—32.7% of the year—just to pay taxes. That equals two hours and 35 minutes out of every eight-hour workday. That's longer than we worked to pay for food, cl
