    Travel Language No. 2
    2008-07-02 14:26:00
July 3 … The Old Foodie Spouse often comments, in response to one of my stories, that I am “having a go at” (that is, “taking the mickey out of”) Americans “again”. He did not say it yesterday, surprisingly, - being more miffed that the story was not about real black pudding, as he had anticipated. Nothing could be further from the truth however, for those of you from “Over There” are amongst my most loyal readers, and I never intend to mock. I am merely bemused on a permanent basis about how we can share a common heritage and language and yet still get something as basic as our puddings and biscuits mixed up. Nevertheless, I will say to my American friends, that I do not intend to travel to your country again, without some intensive education on how to negotiate the breakfast order. I am baffled by “sunny side up” and “over easy” and disturbed by “half and half” and the immoderate size of a stack of pancakes. But I digress. The problem is ver

Foreign Language Degrees Prepare You for Much More Than Teaching
    2008-06-28 00:00:00
Most people associate a foreign language degree with teaching, assuming that someone with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, French, Japanese or some other foreign language will teach the language. Most students with fluency in a second language, however, pursue career options that focus on the private sector or government service. In fact, having [...]

IBM launches Hindi speech recognitionWith proposed investments of $6 billion in India, IBM would surely want to have more associations with the country other than the colour blue. No wonder that it has partnered with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), to come out with a Desktop Hindi Speech Recognition Technology. This technology, also called Shrutlekhan- Rajbhasha has been developed in association with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing. This technology transcribes spoken Hindi language with little assistance from the user through keyboards. It would therefore help people with limited computer literacy & also the physically challenged. Needless to add, this technology would also find many suitors in the domain of domestic call centres of various banks, telecom companies, airlines and even Indian Railways to assist them in performing better. Dr. Daniel Dias, Director, IBM India Research Laboratory, said, “The system can recognise more than 75,000

How can you really tell? If you understand body language, you would know within the first five minutes of the date whether she likes you or not. When did language originate?
    2008-06-25 09:24:49
By Mano Singham Trying to discover the origins of language is a fascinating scientific problem but the evidence is necessarily indirect. Clearly our bodies' physical capacity to articulate sounds is a biological development. Language had to be preceded by the evolution of the physical organs responsible for vocalization. Those organs must have co-evolved with those parts of the brain that can process language. read more

    Trail: Learning the Java Language
    2008-06-25 04:57:41
This trail covers the fundamentals of programming in the Java programming language. Object-Oriented Programming Concepts teaches you the core concepts behind object-oriented programming: objects, messages, classes, and inheritance. This lesson ends by showing you how these concepts translate into code. Feel free to skip this lesson if you are already familiar with object-oriented programming. Language Basics describes the traditional features of the language, including variables, arrays, data types, operators, and control flow. Classes and Objects describes how to write the classes from which objects are created, and how to create and use the objects. Interfaces and Inheritance describes interfaces—what they are, why you would want to write one, and how to write one. This section also describes the way in which you can derive one class from another. That is, how a subclass can inherit fields and methods from a superclass. You will learn that all classes are d

New Language Development Toy For Autistic Children
    2008-06-20 13:02:05
A new electronic toy seems to be helping children with autism develop language skills. Helma van Rijn developed the toy as part of her graduation project at Delft University of Technology's Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. The electronic toy, which is called LINKX, consists of blocks that the children must place against a specific object. The objects -- for example a table or a window -- are equipped with a small electronic device of a certain colour. If the children place a block against such an object, the block lights up in the same colour as the object and the child hears the word that corresponds to the name of the object (this word has been pre-recorded by the child's parents). Van Rijn has tested this method on autistic children (aged 3-5 years old). Parents and teachers have reacted extremely positively to LINKX. More importantly: it appears that the children do indeed learn new words, although it is still too early to arrive at any definitive conclusions about the lo

The Language of God-5: The nasty problem of miracles
    2008-06-13 09:11:21
By Mano Singham As I said before, sophisticated religious believers like Francis Collins and John Lennox always start out by arguing for a God of the Ultimate Gaps. The insurmountable problem that they then face is that their emotional need to believe in a Personal God who communicates with them individually and can answer their prayers requires them to go well beyond the narrow role they initially assigned to a God of the Ultimate Gaps, and results in them getting tied up in all kinds of logical knots. read more

They have sought to "explain" this by fiat, by simply asserting, as Collins does, that god exists 'outside the universe' (whatever that means) and therefore we will not find evidence for him within the universe. read more

The Language of God-1: Introducing Francis Collins, distinguished scientist and evangelical Christian
    2008-06-09 09:23:10
By Mano Singham In this book, The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, Francis Collins tries to present arguments for the existence of god. Collins is an eminent scientist, the person who took over in 1992 from James Watson (co-discoverer in 1953 of the double-helix structure of DNA) as head of the Human Genome Project that in 2000 finished mapping out the complete sequence of 3.1 billion bases in human DNA. This was a monumental feat and Collins managed to shepherd this huge project to a successful conclusion. read more

    English language overhaul
    2008-06-08 16:49:00
There is currently talk about the biggest overhaul of the English language in our history. Many academics are aghast at the thought of scrapping silent letters and making words that are all pronounced the same for the first time ever being spelt the same. English is a successful language because of its adaptability. It is constantly changing and growing and what a few years ago was considered poor education today is incorporated into the current dictionaries. Words like 'all right' can now be used as 'alright.' This latest gem however is much more radical as it is being suggested that many words will be spelt differently. If the English language reformists are genuine about this overhaul then surely it would make sense for the whole of the English speaking world to be included. Perhaps it is time for English to be unified so that, no matter which country we live in the language would truly be universal!

In fact Sophie speaks Hindi so fluently, it is difficult to believe that she has been born and brought up in the UK.Sophie said that learning different languages made her familiar with the culture and tradition of that nation. They may try to play it cool, but if you know what you're looking for their interest in you will always be glaring obvious. So here are eight body language signs to look out for:Getting Herself NoticedYou and that little cutie may not have exchanged a word, but if she's interested in you she'll soon make it clear. Cat Body Language
    2008-05-10 01:22:09
Cats are funny. They just are! But what does their body language tell us? Here are some assumptions:Cats will twitch the tips of their tails when hunting or angry, while larger twitching indicates displeasure. They may also twitch their tails when playing. A tail held high is a sign of happiness, or can be used as a greeting towards humans or other cats (usually close relatives) while half-raised shows less pleasure, and unhappiness is indicated with a tail held low. A scared or surprised cat may puff up its tail and the hair along its back may stand straight up and turn its body sideways to a threat in order to increase its apparent size.Tailless cats who possess only a small stub of a tail move the stub around as though they possessed a full tail, though it is not nearly as communicative as that of a fully tailed cat. Touching noses is a friendly greeting for cats, while a lowered head is a sign of submission. Some cats will rub their faces along their guardian's cheek or ankles as

Body Language in Communication - Non-Verbal Messages
    2008-05-03 10:08:53
Body language is made up of several things including facial expression, gesture, eye contact, and posture. The game Charades that you played as a kid which allowed you to use body language alone to get your teammates to guess the name of a movie or a well-known phrase, the era of the silent movie, and the talent of a mime all teach us that body language is powerful.I am sure you can recall a time when you conveyed a message to another using the power of your body language - a look you shot your daughters when they got chatty in church, an ear-to-ear smile and open arms for your spouse when he/she returned from a business trip, a soft touch on the arm of a friend who was mourning the loss of a loved one, a hug and a tender look for your son who skinned his knee. These are all powerful messages. In addition, your voice, which can include volume, pitch, rate, variation, tone and more, can say a lot. 2008-04-18 08:45:04
When you were a young child, have you ever tried to decode what your parents' facial expressions mean when you ask them to buy you a new toy or to take you to Disneyland? A frown would likely be a "No!" But a nod would make you jump with joy. As you grow older, it has become a necessity to be able to detect if other people will agree with your decision or proposal. It's especially important to for men to be able to asses a woman's body language in dating situations. This is an ability that will truly help negotiators, employees, and even lovers to succeed in their ventures because they would be able to change their approach early enough to adjust to a specific situation. There are certain hints to indicate if people are more receptive in accepting your ideas. If a woman is interested in you, she'll probably exhibit at least a few of thee following:• Their hands are flat on the table.• Their palms are open.• If they're stroking their chin, they're thinking. Introduction To PHP, The Web Programming Language
    2008-04-17 09:24:00
PHP is a recursive acronym for PHP Hypertext Preprocessor, though it originally stood for Personal Home Page. It is designed specifically for the web, hence a web programming language. PHP is a server-side scripting language which can be either embedded into HTML documents or used alone. Since PHP is a interpreted language, when someone requests a page containing PHP, the code is interpreted on the server and the output (often HTML) is returned to the client web browser. As you might have guessed, PHP can help you generate different outputs depending on the conditions and generate different pages depending on conditions programmed, hence able to create what wee call “Dynamic Pages”. For example, suppose we want to put the current date and time on our web page, HTML alone won’t do any good. So a nice option would be to use PHP (in fact, any sever-sided programming language would be fine. It could also be done with JavaScript but due to it

Converting WSDL to the Target Language ABAP Proxy Generation
    2008-04-01 07:19:56
As illustrated in the graphic below, a WSDL document converted by proxy generation comprises two parts, namely a description of data types and an interface description, the parameters of which are used by these data types: During proxy generation, WSDL descriptions are converted into proxies. · The WSDL elements of the interface description are converted on a 1:1 basis into objects of the respective target language (classes, interfaces, methods). · The conversion of the data types to XSD (XML Schema Definition Language) can be subject to restrictions, depending on the target language.ABAP proxy generation does not support the full range of XSD commands. These restrictions are described in the attachment in the target language section in each case (for more information see: Attachment: Mapping XSD to ABAP or Attachment: Mapping XSD to Java). The WSDL description contains, among other things, the structure of a message. The message that is then sent corresponds t

Like last Saturday when this couple started fighting in the middle of the street as they were crossing. They even stopped and started shouting at each other, oblivious to the many eyes watching from cars, buses and jeeps, and fe
