Changes to MARC Code List for Languages
    2008-07-02 11:48:04
As a result of a formal request from the National Libraries of Serbia and Croatia and those countries' national standards bodies to the ISO 639 Joint Advisory Committee, the MARC language codes for Serbian and Croatian will be changed as below from the ISO 639-2 bibliographic codes (ISO 639-2/B) to the ISO 639-2 terminology codes (ISO 639-2/T). This change also supports established usage in bibliographic databases in Croatia. Because the codes are obsolete, rather than deleted, they may still appear in bibliographic records created before the implementation of this change.New CodeLanguage NamePreviously CodedsrpSerbianscchrvCroatianscrSubscribers can anticipate receiving MARC records reflecting these changes in all distribution services not earlier than September 1, 2008.

Do you know why English and Chinese languages affect dyslexia differently?
    2008-04-14 09:46:43
Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness: Millions of children worldwide are affected by dyslexia, a language-based learning disability that can include problems in reading, spelling, writing and pronouncing words. According to the International Dyslexia Association, approximately 8 to 15 percent of the students worldwide (if not more) suffer from this problem. But very recently an interesting finding, reported in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, opened up a new angle to look at the problem on the whole - Dyslexia affects different parts of children's brains depending on whether they are raised reading English or Chinese. "This finding was very surprising to us. We had not ever thought that dyslexics' brains are different for children who read in English and Chinese," said lead author Li-Hai Tan, a professor of linguistics and brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Hong Kong. "Our finding yields neurob

    Languages
    2008-03-13 23:27:24
So often I get comments or emails from people from around the world who say “Excuse me, my English is not good...” and all I can respond with is “Your English is much better than my German (or Portuguese, or Chinese, or whatever).” The rest of the world should be commended on learning several languages as if its the most normal thing in the world. And maybe it is. The biggest drawback of English becoming the world’s default language is that most native English speakers never learn anything else. I was reminded of this again recently when Mark Boyle gave up his quest to walk to India without any money. He made it as far as the other side of the English Channel. In Calais, he found that the people spoke French and did not understand him! They thought he was a freeloader! Of course, they were right. Not only a freeloader, but one who expected everyone else in the world to speak more languages than he does. Ken Lee (via Arbroath

    Mixing Up languages
    2008-01-24 12:55:17
It happens often when someone is bilingual or multilingual to mix up languages. It happens to me when I have to speak a lot of languages one after another in a very short period of time. For example, if I speak to someone in English, and someone comes and don't speak English, I have to speak with him in his language, then, someone else comes and I have to speak with him in another language ... in a short period of time, I have spoken three different languages. When I get back to the first person (who speaks English), I got confused ... then, I speak Spanish, French or whatever and I mix up languages. It takes a few minutes before I realize that I English is the language that I have to speak.I only mix up languages in this kind of situations ... when my mind is solicited (too much) to use a lot of languages simultaneously ... when the mental translation is done rapidly. It happens to me also, when I am stressed, angry, and voluntarily I don't bother to use the proper language but my native

Make sure your C# code conforms to the Common Language Subset (CLS). To help with this, add the [assembly:CLSCompliant(true)] global attribute to your C# source files. The compiler will emit an error if you use a C# feature which is not CLS-compliant.

    Communication Via Internet Languages:
    2007-11-01 06:32:00
The late 1980s saw some of the first breakthroughs in creating websites taking place at CERN. It led to a boost in popularity of the internet as a medium of communication and broadcaster of information. A new stratum of professionals emerged who became indispensable to businesses with their skills in harnessing this newly unleashed media.GML or General Markup Language was the first ever language these web developers used for composing web pages. It was influenced by Script which pioneered the concept of styles being separated from the marked up document. GML allowed for processing same source files to produce books, reports and electronic editions. A drawback of this language was it was limited to only document formats.SGML or Standard General Markup Language was then introduced, which proved to be an intermediary for manipulating and exchanging text documents. SGML, in turn was used as a base for another language, HTML or Hypertext Markup Language, which allowed the developers to use fixed tags for composing a website. SGML’s more recent descendant, XML or Extensible Markup Language, allows users flexibility in terms of defining their own tags.XML, made new kinds of Java based applications possible. JavaScript, a scripting language [not to be confused with the programming language Java], allowed an individual to add new elements and attributes to a webpage, besides re- structuring options, without having to know any other complex languages. JavaScript also enabled a shift from static HTML displays.Ajax [Asynchronous JavaScript and XML] is another JavaScript based programme, which reveals and updates parts of a web page as a systematic process. The attributes of Web 2. 0 can be seen in such a programme where interaction between the user and the web site is made possible. Google Maps is a good example of Ajax techniques. Our website packaging at Cosmos Creative Services includes graphic design, coding of web pages and interactive web applications. We use languages l

Similar steps can be used for other languages. How do I blog in Kannada? ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ಲ್ಲಾಗು ಬರೆಯುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ?First, register and start a blog with blogger or wordpress etc. These popular hosts will not provide a plug-in or utility to type your content in regional languages and you’ll have to relay on third party applications/websites to type in Kannada. Now comes two aspects:A. You just want to publish one post in Kannada language with Kannada script For this, you just need to type in Kannada somewhere and copy paste the text in the content box of new post.If you have installed softwares like Baraha and Nudi, life will be much easier. You can type and save your writing at your convenience and publish when you want, by copy pasting the kannada character into blog new post page. (unicode characters can be easily copy pasted under web 2.0 platform...)In case you’re accessing net from a system where you can’t install Baraha or Nudi or don’t want to do that each time, you can make use of web pages which allow you to do that: I like two such pages: One: http://demo.vishalon.net/kannadatypepad.htm or http://www.quillpad.com/kannada/ (both of these support several other regional languages including Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Telugu etc)(Quillpad has improved a lot in past few months. Now it is possible to type Kannada English combination). Type your content here and then copy paste in blogger. In case you want to save it, send it to your gmail Id by mail.Use this approach whereever you want to put Kannada characters-Orkut scrapbook/comments in other blogs etc..B. You want to change entire blog layout with Kannada Simple. For title, you can consider designing a good banner with blog title, image, description and then save this as a jpg image. From blogger dashboard, nagivate to template-Title, replace tittle with above image. For other places (like to replace comments with “tippani” ಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿ, ಲೇಖಕರು, ವರ್ಗ etc) go to templates-edit the "posts" box, look for place where comments is there and replace it with Kannada word (type them first elsewhere as described in step A above).Hope this helps.Coming soon: SEO for regional language bloggers Note: Certain audio video contents may not appear properly in your mailbox. SSS 7 - Google developing new languages?
    2007-07-15 08:16:00
I am surprised the fact that Google is developing new languages has not had more media coverage. I only discovered it myself when looking at the new Google translation site. Here is a selection of their language translation options:Chinese (Simplified to Traditional) BETAChinese (Traditional to Simplified) BETAEnglish to Arabic BETAEnglish to Chinese (Simplified) BETAEnglish to Chinese (Traditional) BETAEnglish to FrenchEnglish to GermanEnglish to ItalianEnglish to Japanese BETAEnglish to Korean BETAEnglish to PortugueseEnglish to Russian BETAEnglish to SpanishIt seems rather a waste of time to me. If people have to relearn their language then why does Google not develop just one international one. They could call it GoogleTalk. One of my favorite blogs, Adelaide Green Porridge Café, not only has interesting commentary on life, the universe and everything but humor to boot. Here is but a sample:My iPhone, Granny's iPhoneAsk and You Shall ReceiveFunny High School AnalogiesThe web s
