    Lawn Mowing Tips
    2008-07-29 08:54:40
How you mow your lawn has a significant effect on the overall health and appearance of your lawn. Following a few basic lawn mowing tips is the best way to promote healthy great looking lawns.Mowing TipsWhen you mow make sure you don't remove any more than one third of the grass leaf during any one cutting. If a lawn gets too tall and you just have to cut it down a lot to get caught up, bite the bullet and break it down into several mowings with 3 or more days between cuttings.Never cut grass too short, this is particularly important for cool season grasses. Higher heights usually provide for a deeper root system, better appearance, and is less likely to have weeds invading, particularly crabgrass. I find this tip to be very effective in keeping my lawn from burning as well.Try to avoid mowing your lawn when the grass is wet. The grass leafs do not get cut off clean and actually tear. Also your la...

    Sun-Burned Lawn
    2008-06-14 10:06:44
We have a serious case of sun-burned lawn behind our home. As you can see in the photo there is a very large area of sun-burned grass. You can also see in the lower left hand corner of the photo where our septic tank is buried by the nice rectangular outline of sun-burned grass. This also happened last summer so I'm trying to come up with a plan to fix the problem. Our yard has two distinctly different soil types. When we excavated for the foundation we noticed that the front yard is full of very dense blue clay. However, the back yard was just like the beach, nice clean granular "beach" sand. Knowing that was the situation I decided to dig some shallow test pits.I found that in the areas of really bad burning that the loam layer was really thin. In some cases only an inch deep. It's been my experience that you need at least 3 inches of soil and 4 or 5 would be great. The thin soil layer is a problem for me for two reasons. One the thin layer only allows the grass roots to grow to a sha...

    Lawn Core Aeration
    2008-06-09 14:22:49
What is Lawn Aeration?Aerating a lawn is a simple process of removing small cores of soil and grass to allow air, water and nutrients into the root zone. Another way of aerating a lawn is to use a spike aerator that punches spikes into the lawn to make small holes. However, this method isn't considered as effective as core aerating. What are the Benefits of Aerating Your Lawn? The biggest benefit to aerating your lawn is allow sufficient oxygen to reach the grass roots. Heavy soil compaction severely reduces the pore space around grass roots which limits the amount of oxygen in that region. Roots require oxygen to grow and absorb water and nutrients. Core aeration benefits lawns by:Increasing the activity of soil microorganisms that decompose thatchEnhancing water infiltration from rainfall and irrigationImproving root growthIncreasing water, oxygen and nutrient movement in the root zoneHelping to prevent run off of fertilizers and pesticidesHow do you determine if your lawn needs aerati...

    Hydroseeding Lawn Update
    2008-06-09 14:22:20
Two weeks ago we had a small area in our lawn hydro seeded. Finally today when I checked on it I see that the seed has germinated and the grass is about 2 inches tall. I've been a bit disappointed in how fast the seed started but the reality is the weather has been awful. The last two weeks has been hot and dry around here which is opposite of what you need for good grass growing. It's been so dry around here our back yard grass looks like it typically does in the heat of August so I really should be glad this seed even came up. I'm looking forward to seeing how this grass grows over the next year or so compared to the grass we planted by hand. I'm also curious to see how well this grass roots into the sub-grade because I didn't really prepare it as well as I wanted to. I'll post another update in a few weeks to let you know how our new hydro seeded grass is coming along.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog, hydroseeding...

Wedding Crashers Flew In, and the Lawn Wore White

My bookshelf holds such must-haves as “Tornadoes, Dark Days, Anomalous Precipitation, and Related Weather Phenomena,” which chronicles things like giant snowflakes and clouds that hiss like snakes. Stay Off My Lawn, You Hockey Hooligans
    2008-05-30 10:21:33
Reports have now come out  that the NHL has narrowed down its options for the next outdoor game (January 1st, 2009) to be held either in Chicago or in Pittsburgh, with at least the Red Wings or the Penguins being featured. The apparent front-running stadium to host the event, though, is Wrigley Field, the hallowed "friendly confines" of the Chicago Cubs.  The game would be between the Blackhawks (an exciting, improving, and young team with two blossoming superstars) and the Wings (an old, decrepit band of losers who might smear their greasy paws on the Stanley Cup this year). But don't rule out Yankee Stadium just yet.  The soon-to-be-demolished relic of baseball lore could still be chosen to host an outdoor game between the Rangers and the Bruins (yay, another East Coast-centric and over-hyped rivalry game).  The only other option on the table as far as locations go is the football stadium at Penn State University, called Beaver Stadium or "Happy Valley" (capa...

7 Steps to a Healthy Lawn
    2008-05-29 07:20:00
Unless you live in a plastic bubble somewhere, you are aware of potential damage and hazards associated with both pesticide and herbicide usage. Even when we are aware of possible problems, sometimes we don't act upon the information we are given, for a variety of different reasons.Below is a simple and easy list of some of the steps you can take if you are considering making the shift to a more organic approach to lawn care. As with anything, this is a process and not something that can be done overnight, but with a commitment to taking a healthier approach, healthier results can be achieved over time. 1. MOW HIGH & MULCHGrass cycling (sharpen those mower blades!) returns clippings to the lawn providing about 1,500 pounds of free fertilizer to the average lawn. Scattered clippings break down quickly and feed the roots of the grass plants. Grass cycling can be done with a mulching mower or regular mower. Clip only 1/3 of the grass length at each mowing. This will keep the plants ...

    The Lawn Mower
    2008-05-27 16:03:36
I hold down the lever and yank back on the cord as I hear the rumbling, feel the vibrating in my hands. The lawn mower shakes off brown dust the way a dog shakes off water. It roars at me in anticipation of the blades of grass it will soon eat. The mower knows it is time for its weekly meal. It is Saturday. My dad wants me to use the riding lawn mower, but I don't for two reasons: I enjoy the walking, the pushing. The act of being the mower. Also, when I was younger I tried the rider and I couldn’t reach the brake and almost collided with my mom’s car.For years I mowed with this same push mower – a professional, I called myself. Then, abruptly, I stopped mowing because my left hip was removed and I could no longer walk. It was my job, my duty, my responsibility no more. For years I was used to someone else using my lawn mower, or worse, not using it and instead relying on the riding mower. It was not easy getting my job back, not because my dad loved mowing so much, but because he ...

    Hydroseeding Part of Our Lawn
    2008-05-21 16:28:15
Today the Hydroseeding contractor came and sprayed a small area in our back yard that I've had trouble getting grass to grow. As you can see in the picture the area that is bright green was sprayed with a combination of seed, water, fertilizer and paper mulch (recycled newspaper).I prepared the area by raking it to loosen the top layer of soil and remove small rocks and twigs. It only took them about 10 minutes to do the job. I lucked out by having a neighbor that was having the entire back yard done so they were willing to spray my small 500 sq. ft. area.Hydroseeding ranges from about 5 cents to 10 cents a square foot. My small 500 sq. ft. area only cost me $25 so I thought it was well worth it. I didn't take a picture of the truck today but it was pretty similar to the one in the attached photo. Hopefully we'll have some nice grass in a few weeks and then I'll be sold on hydroseeding.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog, hydroseeding...

    Lawn Furniture
    2008-05-09 01:58:06
If you love being outdoors, you should pick lawn furniture that you love! It should be more than practical and functional. It should add to the very experience of being outside. There are so many options in lawn furniture, and you are sure to find something to fit within your budget. Does your family host a lot of picnics? If so, there's no doubt a picnic table in your future. Picnic tables come in a lot of varieties ranging from plastic to cast iron. This is one piece of furniture that can truly fit into any budget. If the picnic table will be used predominantly by adults, a cheaper plastic variety might suit your needs. But if kids are planned guests, think about investing in something just a little more sturdy that can hold up to a flurry of activity that usually follows kids. If a picnic table and benches are not your style, don't despair. Look into other tables. Choose a heavy glass and concrete pedestal table. Mix and match chairs to get the lawn furniture look you want. Or buy a...

John Deere X300 Lawn Mower Maintenance
    2008-04-07 19:38:00
Last year I bought a John Deere X300 lawn mower with the mulching deck. Seeing that spring is just around the corner (late start here in snow country) I want to get the mower ready for the upcoming summer season. The following maintenance items are suggested annually:1. Lubricate front axle pivot, axle spindles, mower spindles, pivot points, and lift pedal.2. Change engine oil and filter.3. Replace spark plugs.4. Replace air filter element (foam and paper).5. Replace fuel filter.6. Clean engine cooling fins.7. Check mower belt.8. Sharpen / replace blades.9. Clean bottom side of mowing deck.10. Check tire pressure.John Deere sells a convenient home maintenance kit that includes oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, air pre-cleaner and spark plugs. I decided to buy the John Deere kit so that I'd have all the correct parts. Maybe next time I'll buy them separately once I know what I'm doing. Tonight I already took care of item 10 when I found the lawn mower had a flat tire.Tags: home i...

    Correcting Lawn pH with Lime
    2008-04-04 18:57:00
In my previous post, Lawn Soil Test Report, I stated that my lawn needs a significant amount of lime to correct the acidic soil that our lawn is growing in. In fact, our lawn tested at an average pH of 5.35! That's more than 10 times more acidic than the ideal range of 6.0 to 6.5. Needless to say that means I need to use a tremendous amount of lime.I have about 45,000 sq. ft. of lawn. The soil report says I need to apply 50 lbs per 1,000 sq. feet of dolomitic lime now and about 42 lbs per sq. feet in the fall. 50 lbs x 45,000 sq. feet / 1,000 sq. feet = 2,250 lbs of lime!! Can you believe that? And that's only what I need to apply this spring. So I decided to make a trip to HD (very much against my best intentions of supporting local hardware stores) with my son the other day. They have several products to choose from but I decided to go with the Lime Rite (pictured above). It comes in 40 lb bags and costs about $4.50 per bag. I ended up buying 20 bags or 800 lbs on this trip. I can't e...

    Selecting A Lawn Fertilizer
    2008-04-03 11:48:00
In my previous post,Lawn Soil Test Report, I talked about the results of a soil analysis that I had done on our lawns soil. The resulting report recommends that I apply a fertilizer with a ratio of 3:1:3 where 1 lb of Nitrogen is applied to every 1,000 sq. ft. This is where the confusion starts to set in. The ratio is a ratio of Nitrogen: Phosphorus: Potassium. If you start looking at the bags of fertilizer that are available on the shelf of your local home store you'll realize where my confusion comes from.Seeing it's spring I started looking at the bag of Scotts Turf Builder With PLUS 2 Weed Control (Yellow bag) that is recommended for Spring fertilizing. The ratio listed on that bag is 28:2:3 or 14:1:1.5. Obviously that ratio isn't close to having the appropriate amount of Potassium in it for my soil conditions. Next I looked at Scott's Turf Builder with SummerGuard (Orange bag) that is recommended for Summer fertilizing. The ratio listed on that bag is 28:0:8. Again this ratio does...

    Lawn Soil Test Report
    2008-04-02 13:52:00
As spring finally approaches here in New Hampshire I've started thinking about what needs to be done to the lawn. Last fall I had our soil tested so I could take some of the guess work out of diagnosing our mediocre lawn. Three samples were taken and tested by the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension. The results of the tests told me what I already knew. Our soil is very acidic with an average pH of 5.35. The ideal pH range for a lawn in this area is approximately 6.0 to 6.5. In addition to testing the acidity of our lawn the following tests were performed:Calcium (Ca) = 132 ppm, Optimum range = 800 - 1200 ppmMagnesium (Mg) = 25 ppm, Optimum range = 60 -0120 ppmPotassium (K) = 22 ppm, Optimum range = 170 - 280 ppmPhosphorus (P) = 38 ppm, Optimum range = 30 - 50 ppm (This was good!)Lead (Pb) = 3 ppm (Maximum recommended for gardens = 278 ppm)The report suggests that we apply 92 lbs of dolomitic lime per 1,000 sq. ft. However, they also suggest that you not apply more than 50...

Get Off My Lawn Week Continues
    2008-02-29 12:57:04
This is apparently Old Media VS Anything New week in the world of hockey.  First it's the tired old "bloggers are stupid" rants from the hallowed halls of radio, now it's the "shootouts are stupid" rants from the newspaper columnists. Before I go any farther, two disclaimers.  1) I don't usually post about topics that have nothing specific to do with the Colorado Avalanche, but this is worth it.  2) I'm not a huge fan of shootouts.  With that out of the way... John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal doesn't understand "the cow kick," a quick kick of the leg Sidney Crosby pioneered to fake out goalies during shootouts.  It doesn't always work, but it is intended to make the goalie think a shot is being taken, when one isn't.  Seems straight forward enough, right? Not to MacKinnon.  No, the cow kick and similar fake-out moves should stop being used by players during the shootout because they're not something those same players would try during regul...

A 70-Year-Old Great-Grandmother was Arrested for Allegedly Not Watering Her Lawn: Thank You Big Government
    2007-09-19 20:27:51
Something is clearly in the water supply. Not only do liberals want to ban fast food, but now they are arresting 70-year-old great-grandmothers for having brown lawns. Yes, Betty Perry was cited by Officer James Flygare of the police's Neighborhood Preservation Unit for failing to water her lawn.“Perry refused to give her name to the officer and, when Flygare tried to stop her from going back inside her house, she reportedly tripped and injured her nose.” Are we living in the Soviet Union? What kind of nonsense is this? Why are tax dollars going toward a “Neighborhood Preservation Unit?” Again, these bureaucratic nightmares are getting out of control. There was a really simple solution to this situation. If Betty Perry’s neighbors wanted her brown lawn green, they should have knocked on her door and offered to water her lawn for a small fee or for free. If she refused, that’s too bad; it is her property. If elitist liberals want to argue that it lowers the property ...

Controll your lawn sprinkler through your pc...
    2007-08-14 19:45:24
I just found out that it is possible for homeowners like us to be able to control our sprinkler through our computer or pc. Now, that is great! I would recommend it to everyone looking for a hassle free lawn sprinkler controller. It is not only hassle free but time saving because it is an automatic PC Irrigation Controller, and is done through a computer which is so convenient because one could be sitting in front of the computer surfing the net while at the same time watering the lawn. I mean you don't have to go outside and do it yourself, but just stay in the house and do it from there. So, that is innovative....

    Not a Lawn
    2007-05-14 15:44:58
At the front of our house we have a square of something we refer to as a “lawn”. It is not a lawn. What is growing at the front of our house does include grass–several kinds of grass, actually. But the grassy elements are in the minority. We have plenty of milkweed. We have hundreds of dandelions. We have large patches of clover, and smaller patches of cranesbill. We have green onions everywhere. The one thing we have the most of is this: See that little guy, there? That’s a swamp maple seedling. Ben loves the swamp maple seedlings. He calls them his plants, and he picks them by the dozens, and re-plants them in his seed starter tray… or on the front stairs… or by the rosebush… or in the car. However, even with all Ben’s efforts to pluck and relocate his “plants”, our “lawn” is still overrun. What looks like un-raked leaves all over our “lawn” is just the spawn of  maple reproduction. A...
