Hezbollah Wins in Lebanon - Is This the "Grand Bargain" in Action?
    2008-05-21 13:58:56
Today is a day which we should mark on the calendar and remember for a long time. For on this day, it became abundantly clear that the Iranian-Syrian axis now controls Lebanon through Hezbollah , and Al Qaeda and the Taliban now control the Northwest provinces in Pakistan (see ABC News and the AP story ). Both groups of terrorists won through sustained asymmetric (and, in Lebanon, conventional) warfare which eventually collapsed the will of the opposition, which was not supported in any material...(read more)

    Lebanon's "300"
    2008-05-12 09:21:05
While the West is busy living its daily life, a beast is busy killing the freedom of a small community on the East Mediterranean: Lebanon. Indeed, as of last week, the mighty Hezbollah, armed to the teeth with 30,000 rockets and missiles and aligning thousands of self described “Divine soldiers” has been marching across the capital, terrorizing its population, shutting down media, taking its politicians and the Prime Minister as hostages, and looting at will. The hordes of Lebanon’s...(read more)

    Lebanon
    2008-05-08 10:13:59
(cartoon by Mazen Kerbage) I haven’t watched a news channel in a very long time, I usually stick to reading the news online. But today my dad had the TV on Al-Jazeera, and I couldn’t believe how much more horrible the situation in Lebanon looked than it did in photographs. Masked gunmen… Blockades in the middle of [...]

Iraqi Shiites Copying From Their Hezbollah Cousins in Lebanon?
    2008-03-30 06:57:00
Counterterrorism Blog -- It shouldn't surprise us if we find that the Shiite militias have prepared for the same type of warfare engaged in by their Hezbollah cousins in 2006, using Iranian arms, IRGC advisers and trainers, and similar tactics. The obvious difference between Lebanon 2006 and Iraq 2008 is the direct action in Iraq by the U.S. military, who are now far more efficient in counterinsurgency and urban warfare than the Israelis were entering the 2006 conflict. Did the Shiite militia desire such a reaction? Is that why they shelled the Green Zone so early in the conflict with the Iraqi army, to draw the Americans in and inject more uncertainty over Iraq into the 2008 election cycle?Shiite militia leaders have already achieved one strategic goal: they showed Pentagon planners and American voters that the Iraqi army is nowhere ready to secure Iraq, much as Hezbollah exposed the weaknesses in Israeli armed forces. We can also expect that unless the American military completely wip

Iran & Hezbollah Targeted U.S. Embassy Officials in Lebanon
    2008-01-15 11:21:30
Today's bombing which targeted a U.S. Embassy car in a northern Beirut neighborhood most likely was an assassination attempt by Hezbollah and their Iranian superiors on the U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, Jeffrey Feltman, or senior embassy personnel. The blast killed four Lebanese and injured a local embassy employee as Amb. Feltman was getting ready to attend farewell reception for him before his next assignment. Our special correspondent in Lebanon, "Karim," who has provided valuable information for...(read more)

Hezbollah in the driver's seat in Lebanon
    2007-12-04 23:08:27
Hezbollah's grip over Lebanon is increasing by the day. And the West does not seem ready to stop this freight train any longer. The Croissant just reported the following two stories (full versions available to subscribers) that prove how Hezbollah is planning its "coup": Did Hezbollah arrest UNIFIL’s commander, a few weeks ago? Iran provides armored cars to Hezbollah. I just wrote a piece for the Middle East Times on Hezbollah's tactics to seize power . Here is a short excerpt: While Lebanon...(read more)

Tensions Mount in Lebanon as Presidential Elections Draw to a Close
    2007-11-21 10:41:55
The Islamic Action Front fared poorly in yesterday’s parliamentary elections in Jordan. Meanwhile in Lebanon-where the two month presidential election period ends tomorrow—prospects for the Hizballah-led opposition are looking up. Word from Lebanon is that the pro-West March 14th Government will not be able to elect one of their two preferred candidates (Boutros Harb and Nassib Lahoud) president. Instead, it now appears that the March 14th forces and opposition may settle on a “compromise”...(read more)

Lebanon Daily News - Clients attest: Consultant counts!
    2007-11-02 22:20:00
Lebanon Daily News - Clients attest: Consultant counts! After working 15 years in the hospitality industry, Mary Foltz decided to launch her own business, Service Counts!, to help businesses improve their customer service and formulate strategies. Foltz’s goal is “trying to make and improve the level of service for consumers.” She said she “recognized a need in Lebanon County for increasing levels of support” for businesses. A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Foltz, 38, moved to this area when she landed a job with Olive Garden in Wyomissing in 1998. She later worked as an assistant food and beverage director for Sheraton Reading Hotel and then as staff-development manager for Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Co. from 2001 to 2006. Foltz has also worked with Disney and Marriott Corp. She holds associate degrees in business administration and hotel technology. Since starting Service Counts!, Foltz has worked with clients from as far away as New York but is trying to concentrate on businesses closer to Lebanon to decrease her travel. She works out of her Cleona home. Foltz holds training sessions and workshops for management and employees. Sometimes, she serves as a mystery shopper to evaluate a retailer’s customer-service response. Robert Weeks, general manager of Sheraton Reading Hotel, said Foltz helped facilitate a strategic planning session for his sales staff. “She helped us develop a strengths and weaknesses assessment for us and our competition,” Weeks said in an e-mail. “This allowed us to have great discussion about selling to our strengths. “We also brainstormed potential types of businesses where we could prospect for additional new business. We talked about effective ways to go about talking to potential customers,” he added. Jim Bokosky, general manager of Four Points by Sheraton Hotel & Suites Allentown, asked Foltz to work with his facility’s front-line service staff “to help us get our brand-service scores back on track with nat

Syria Strikes Again? Another Assassination of an Anti-Syrian Parliamentarian Rocks Lebanon
    2007-09-19 23:30:46
This morning, Lebanese parliamentarian Antoine Ghanem was assassinated in Beirut. Ghanem, a Phalange MP allied with the pro-West Government led by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora was the third parliamentarian in the anti-Syrian majority to be killed this year. A fourth, Gibran Tueni, was killed in December 2005. With Ghanem’s death, the Government’s majority has decreased to 68 of 127 MPs--down from 72 a few years ago. The shrinking majority of this democratically elected government raises the very...(read more)

Iran rebuilds Lebanon to boost Hezbollah
    2007-07-30 19:36:00
One year after the war with Israel, triggered by Hezbollah's cross-border rocket attacks, Lebanon's roads are still in desperate need of repair. But the task of reconstruction has become doubly important. The rebuilding now taking place across the country is an intensely political race for the support of Lebanon's people. Almost unnoticed by the outside world, Iran has seized the chance to win popular approval."From the people of Iran to the people of Lebanon", reads the slogan carried on countless hoarding, all trumpeting achievements like "200 projects" and "510 km of roads". So far, Iran has rebuilt 200 schools, 150 places of worship, 30 clinics and 25 bridges. The official budget for this year is about £60 million.Hezbollah runs most of the local councils in the areas where the projects operate. Here, construction work is given to local companies - but only those managed by Hezbollah supporters. More...

Iran-made bombs in Afghanistan like those Tehran sends to Iraq and Hezbollah in Lebanon
    2007-07-19 16:35:00
US Col. Thomas Kelly reported finding four of the explosively-formed projectiles in Herat near the Iranian border and one a month ago in the capital Kabul. He said Taliban insurgents may have access to the device but may not yet know how to use them.DEBKAfile reveal that the six Spanish peacekeepers killed in South Lebanon last month were not attacked by a suicide bomber but an early version of the armor-piercing EFP disguised as a rock. This model was developed by Hizballah and widely used with deadly effect against Israeli forces maintaining a security belt in South Lebanon in the 1980s.U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in June that "substantial" quantities of Iranian weapons are flowing into Afghanistan and that it was difficult to believe the Iranian government was not aware of it.

    The Fighting in Lebanon
    2007-05-21 18:15:04
With the problems going on in Lebanon right now, I think it would make sense to once again stop and assess the human-based causes of major world problems right now. By that I mean - who is creating this mess? For you America-haters who are looking for an “America is bad” answer to that problem, [...]

    Struggling Lebanon's flower industry
    2007-03-26 07:00:00
Daily StarLebanon, flower farmers hope for recovery in a market that wilted drastically following the summer 2006 war with Israel. Flower cultivator Rashid Debs said the war reduced the flower market to zero, that flowers had become a luxury and farmers did not benefit from normal peak periods such as Valentine's Day and Mothers Day because florists sell imported flowers during that season. Setting up a greenhouse to grow flowers costs at least $7,000, and flowers are not easily marketed, Debs said, explaining that the season for flower sales in Lebanon starts in early July, but that even when Lebanese flowers go to market, dealers still promote imported flowers instead of local ones. The bulk of flowers imported from various European countries comes into the country from January to March...

UNIFIL & Lebanon unwilling - let's blame Israel!
    2006-08-20 02:43:00
The Europeans haven't turned up for duty and the Lebanese have made it clear that Hezbollah are their brothers-in-arms. It all makes the UN Resolution look like a bit of a joke in my mind. But maybe I'm a bit peculiar and in fact Israel still shouldn't have a right to stop the rearming of Hezbollah while world leaders and Lebanon decide which side of the 'war on terror' bed to get out of this morning. Here's my audio view on the whole issue...
