| Lessons We Learn In Death | | 2008-07-02 10:04:00 | | I believe any experience whether positive or negative offers a path of learning to better enrich our lives. The passing of a love one is no exception.Tomorrow is not guaranteed. What would happen if you knew that tomorrow morning your eyes would never open again. 1. Would you be rushing off to tell family and friends what they mean to you or would be comfortable with the knowledge that they already know? 2. Would you spend the time in regret of all of the things that you wished to accomplish but for whatever the reason never attempted?3. Would you be caught thinking about all of the time wasted on the "ifs" and "I wish I could change" instead of being focused on the present?4. Would you be happy with the way your life went or would you believe that you wasted the greatest gift?We live in a funny time that seems to get faster and faster with every passing year. I can not tell you what tomorrow is going to bring but I guess the purpose of this post is to gently remind you that it is | | By: UNTREATABLE' S BLOG - Borderline Personality Self | | |

Veteran newsman and Meet the Press moderator Tim Russert is known for his direct and unpretentious style and in this charming memoir he explains why. Russert's father is profiled as a plainspoken World War II veteran who worked two blue-collar jobs while raising four kids in South Buffalo but the elder Russert's lessons on how to live an honest, disciplined, and ethical life are shown to be universal. Big Russ and Me, a sort of Greatest Generation meets Tuesdays with Morrie, could easily have become a sentimental pile of mush with a son wistfully recalling the wisdom of his beloved dad. But both Russerts are far too down-to-earth to let that happen and the emotional content of the book is made more direct, accessible, and palatable because of it. Book Description
What does it really mean to be a good father? What did your father tell you, that has stayed with you throughout your life? Was there a lesson from him, a story, or a moment that helped to make you who you are? Is there a special memory that makes you smile when you least expect it?
After the publication of Tim Russert’s number one New York Times bestseller about his father, Big Russ & Me, he received an avalanche of letters from daughters and sons who wanted to tell him about their own fathers, most of whom were not superdads or heroes but ordinary men who were remembered and cherished for some of their best moments–of advice, tenderness, strength, honor, discipline, and occasional eccentricity.
Most of these daughters and sons were eager to express the gratitude they had carried with them through the years. Oth | | By: Store Books Cheap

Bad luck and messy breakups were de rigueur in Carrie's life. By surviving the pitfalls — a Manolo-mugging, a computer crash, and a very embarrassing fashion fall — Carrie gained the confidence and strength to continue her search for true love. "The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself," she said. | | MINI offers free driving lessons | | 2008-05-11 08:59:00 | | My wife is a great driver, (of course you are, honey!) but that doesn't mean that I can't suggest improvements now and then. However, the folks at MINI know I don't like sleeping on the couch, and they're willing to take the heat on this one.On their Web site they're offering a handy "Drive Like A Pro" section full of useful tips to improve your driving. Anyone who has ever driven autocross will recognize many of them like sitting up straight, keeping things smooth, proper cornering technique and the best way to shift (again, smooth). There's even a basic heel-and-toe primer. And, thanks to the MINI's lessons, my wife now admits her husband is right that her hands should be at 9 and 3 on the wheel, not 10 and 2.She says I can get off the couch as soon as I admit her driving would improve even more if I bought her a new Clubman. I wonder how much change is under this cushion.[Source: MINI] | | By: Car News

So it is a heavy irony that the man who founded the U.S. venture capital industry, helping to create many multibillion-dollar companies, came from France. In "Creative Capital," Spencer E. Ante, a Business Week journalist, recounts the life of a 20th century Renaissance man, Georges Doriot.Born in Paris in 1899, Doriot was the only son of a promising industrialist at the Peugeot car company and his schoolteacher wife. At age 21, Doriot sailed by steamship to the U.S. from his native France and went on to become a brigadier general in World War II, one of the most influential professors at Harvard Business School and founder of Instead, Europe's first business school. But his main achievement was to pioneer the U.S. venture capital industry in 1946 by setting up American Research & Development, which backed o | | By: Venture Capital News

Musashi continues his warriorship dissertation by describing why the second book is called the Water Book."When water is at its base, the soul is like water. Water takes on the shape of its vessel."Musashi explores the virtue of ADAPTABILITY as it pertains to warriorship. He uses the element of water as a metaphor for describing this value. The longest of the five books, the Water Book spends a great deal of time on specific techniques of sword fighting. Musashi discusses topics such as posture in strategy, proper gaze in Strategy, proper footwork and stances, and specific techniques and principles such as no plan- no concept, running-water strike, and continuous cut. However, Musashi also still finds time to promulgate philosophical proverbs that can be extrapolated not only to Aikido training, bu | | By: Castle Rock Aikido

| | Robert Mugabe's lessons in arithmetic! | | 2008-03-31 10:38:08 | | Robert Mugabe is a cunning crook. Seems he's left all semblance of being a good Catholic boy well behind him. As the votes in this latest Zimbabwean election are counted, Mugabe is sipping soda and telling his cohorts how one wins an election by getting 30% of the vote. According to the Movement for Democratic Change (the opposition party), it has won 60% of the vote, against 30% for Robert Mugabe. But the electoral commission was planning to announce that Mr Mugabe had won 52% of the vote! They should think very carefully before they twist things much further.I don't know of anybody who wants to live under a despot's rule. Mugabe has three options on offer. 1) Resign with what shred of dignity he has left and keep quiet. 2) Wait to be strung up like Saddam Hussein or gunned down like Caucescu and his vinegary wife or 3) Chance his luck in The Hague. I'd suggest he goes for the first option. Oh, and he can forget about the memoirs! | | By: A View from Middle England by Arden Forester | | |

The latest crisis occurred this weekend, when the Federal Reserve engineered a bailout of Bear Stearns, a major U.S. bank that was selling for $70 a share just a week ago, and today is selling for under $4. The Fed also cut a quarter point off the Discount Rate, and opened up the Discount Window to brokerage firms for the first time since the Great Depression. It is expected to cut the Fed Funds Target Rate substantially at its meeting tomorrow. | | By: Indian stock markets

The results varied enormously but I gained something from both experiences. An entertainment agency's showcase auditionThere is a highly successful entertainment agent in Devon who I've known for many years. I mentioned to her that I was wondering about the possibility of doing stand-up in some of the hotels in a major national chain she supplies acts for, hotels where the guests belong, almost exclusively, to the age group that I deliver many of my humorous talks to. She told me that she was soon holding one of her regular, Sunday afternoon auditions for cabaret acts in one of her hotels in front of a small audience.I said that I was used to delivering sober-suited talks so I didn't have any of the sometimes rather loud costumes associated with cabaret acts. | | The Lessons We Learn In Death | | 2008-03-11 17:01:00 | | I believe any experience whether positive or negative offers a path of learning to better enrich our lives. For those in the fashion world, whether it is by greater or smaller degree most likely were riveted to the fashions in the movie The Devil Wears Prada, 2006, staring Meryl Streep. Now that it is out on DVD, you might enjoy an evening of just drooling over each and every fashion as it hit the screen. But this time take out your notebook. There are lessons here about fashion that every woman can learn from. Warning: If you are a great lover of this movie, you can stop here. I don't want to get into a fight but I warn you - I have accessories and I know how to use them. First, I loved Meryl Streep's in The Devil Wears Prada. I appreciated every definitive movement of Streep's, from the sweep of her hands, her expressive eye movements( that could freeze water into ice and serve them to you in cubes), her majestic walk and her heads up - first in the class attitude. In theory, a WI can book any speaker they can like but the Yearbook usually plays a big part in drawing up the programme for the year ahead.Furthermore, all individual WIs belong to Groups which have two further meetings per year with representatives going along from up to 10 individual Institutes. | | Some lessons to be learnt about Sales from the best | | 2008-01-10 02:00:00 | | I lifted this from Industry Week, interesting article, been a mixed week so far, should be feeling good about it but, I feel crap about it all, but that's life...God is a Salesman:Learning from the most successful salesman, God, companies can maintain a loyal client base.Jan. 9, 2008 -- In his new book, God Is A Salesman, author Mark Stevens explains that first-class salespeople should emulate the "ultimate salesman" by quietly and invisibly demonstrating why customers should believe in them and in turn buy from them.IndustryWeek posed some questions to Stevens based on the principles of his book. Q. You advise that it is important for companies to treat the people they sell to, as well as their employees, as family members. Can you explain?A. When companies think of the people who buy their products as "customers" they treat them as numbers. And no one wants to be a number. We want to be valued. We want to be surprised by gestures of thoughtfulness. Thinking of the people who support our businesses as family members is like looking through a prism and changing every aspect of the way we relate to them, for the better. While speaking at the Siemens global CEO conference in Berlin this past October, I noted that every three years I purchase a new Mercedes and each one is always better than the last, often in little details only a long-term Mercedes owner would notice. Sitting in the audience was the company's CFO. When I completed my speech, he approached me to ask which improvements I was referring to. He seemed genuinely delighted to learn of my pleasure and said "We feel like we are all family members. We drive the cars too, not because we make them, but because we want to see first hand how they perform and then suggest to the engineers how to make them better." Q. One of your key principles is that companies should make an iron clad guarantee. Is that realistic?A. Yes, but not the kind of guarantee you may jump to at first thought. Lessons learned in 2007
(January 2nd, 2008 - 9:02AM)
As always, at the end of the year I like to revisit the lessons I've learned in the past 365. Here are the ones from 2007.
Beware of rental scams.
Early in the year I was attempting to find a new roommate, and was surprised to learn that there are scammers who prey on landlords. The general idea is the scammer will show interest in the accomodations, offer to send you a cheque for more than the requested amount, and ask for the difference. Then the cheque they sent you will bounce.
So any landlords or renters out there, be careful!

24 used to be one of my favourite shows. Then I was subjected to season six, which was awful. The bad guy was Jack Bauer's father. That's a sure sign of writing trouble.

| | 12 lessons learned from a life on the road | | 2007-12-28 20:55:00 | | Traveling is hard work. Here's how to make the best of itRule No. 1: Travel is no funReally. If you think it’s all about smiling stewardesses attending to your every whim, friendly hotels offering fawning service, and romantic sunsets on the beach, it’s time for a reality check.javascript:void(0)Publish PostYour stewardess will probably stop smiling when you refer to her as one, because no one calls a flight attendant a stewardess and gets away with it today. Your hotel? They’ll be pleasant until you check out. The moment you complain about that surprise $20-a-day resort fee or the $5 charge for receiving a fax, then the grin on the manager’s face will tighten into a grimace of icy resolve. You’ll hear insincere apologies, but you will probably still pay.And the sunsets on the beach? Last time I went to the beach, there was a hurricane.Point is, travel can be hard work. Travel can be hard, period. But when you do it for a living — when you’re a true blue, card-carrying, sleep-deprived business traveler — you learn the ropes quickly. By the time you’re a million-miler, and maybe sooner, you know travel isn’t always fun but you also know travel can be tolerable. What lessons can you learn from these veterans of the road? I asked some of the most experienced travelers I knew to tell me what traveling has taught them. Here are a dozen of them, in their own words:Expect nothingThat way, you won’t be disappointed. “Lower your expectations when you travel,” says Steve Powell, an Internet consultant in Orlando. It’s great advice, considering a recent Travelocity survey that found a near total disconnect between what air travelers expect and what they get. As a result, nearly two-thirds of the respondents said they would avoid using an airline altogether if they had a comparable choice. | | Lessons to Learn in Five-Six Loan Scheme | | 2007-12-21 14:31:00 | | Many of us are accustom in choosing the five-six whenever we find ourselves in the very difficult situation of needing a cash for emergency purposes. Franciso Colayco, a well known financial advisor share us his sights and advises on this popular lending scheme. Joey from the Middle East wrote me that he has been an OFW for so long and yet, instead of saving, he is deep in debt and has borrowing from “five-six” lenders. He doesn't have his own family yet but he supports his parents. Ever since he was young, he did not know how to save and he brought his bad habits even when he was already working. He does not only spend his salary but he borrows to spend as well. All his salary is spent in paying off debts and he continues to borrow. When he watched me on TV in the Filipino channel, he heard me say that people have to force themselves to save if they want to grow their wealth. He knew that he should save at least 20% of his income but he is unable to implement it. He starts planning to save and sometimes, he is even able to start but he is unable to continue. He starts telling himself “next time na lang” until he gives up again. He even opened a dollar account in 1995 but it stayed with the initial deposit and nothing was added to it thereafter. Even his initial deposit was lost because of inactivity. He even joined Pag-ibig Fund but after three contributions, he gave up. Joey said that he wants to always have money in his wallet and he promises that he will not spend it. But he always ends up spending it anyway. Everything went downhill when he started borrowing from “5-6” and this has been going on for years now and he cannot seem to get out of it. He is asking for advice. No amount of advice can be given to Joey if he is not determined to follow it. Perhaps, the fact that he is single does not give him enough incentive to save. He has to have an incentive to save. | | By: OFW LIFE | | |

| | Top Ten Lessons Learned in Home Based Internet Business | | 2007-12-07 21:21:00 | | Since starting my home based Internet business back in 1997, I have learned many lessons along the way. These lessons have played a major role in my success, and I'd like to share them with you.Lesson #1Collecting your visitors' email addresses should be one of your top priorities.Start collecting email addresses the moment you put your site up. Developing a list of targeted potential customers is an absolute must.Although publishing an ezine is usually the best route to go, it is not a necessity. You can use your list to send out web site updates, product updates, or whatever you'd like.Lesson #2Your web site can either make or break you.A professional looking web site will play a major role in your success. If you aren't secure in your abilities to design a professional looking site, you will be much better off hiring a professional.Lesson # 3If you want to make a lot of money, you must create a niche.A niche fills a specific customer need.People want products and services that fulfill a specific personal need. If you are the first to fulfill the need, you'll reap the rewards.Lesson # 4Generating web site traffic takes a lot of time and effort. The key to generating a lot of traffic to your site is getting your link on as many sites as possible. Sure, listing your site with the Search Engines is your first step; however, you must not solely rely on Search Engines to bring you traffic. My two biggest traffic generators are as follows:Affiliate Program - Having your own affiliate program is one of the best ways to get hundreds, even thousands of links to your web site.Providing a Free Product or Service - Providing your visitors with a free product or service is a great way to drive traffic to your site. For example, I offer a free article syndication service. This service provides free content for web sites branded with a link to my site.Lesson # 5Selling your own products and services is much more profitable than marketing affiliate programs. Some of the top Inte | | By: Rich at Home | | |
