As the market has risen since 2003, the latest stage of the run up has been fueled by what I like to call the “buyout premium”. When an acquisition is announced, the stock price of the company being acquired generally surges from 10-20% or more as the buyer must produce a good enough deal to gain control of the company. This is known as a “control premium” and represents the ability of the buyer to determine the course of the company on a forward-looking basis.
