| | Late Night Lightning | | 2008-06-25 11:00:00 | | Going into the eighth inning last night, it looked like the Red Sox were on their way to their second straight defeat against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The bats once again looked pretty sluggish all night. Doug Davis, who had thyroid surgery earlier this year, pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one run, a home run in the first to Dustin Pedroia.
But the Sox showed some of that late inning magic that seemed to have disappeared lately. Pedroia singled one run to chase Davis, and Mike Lowell doubled in two runs off Chad Qualls to tie the score at 4, and then Jason Varitek (pictured), who was mired in a horrific 1-for-31 slump, singled to right to give the Red Sox the lead, 5-4.
Jonathan Papelbon sealed the deal in the ninth for his 22nd save of the season to put the Red Sox back in the win column. Chris Smith got his first win in the major leagues, as Justin Masterson had a tough night, and allowed all four Arizona runs, including a three-run homer by Chad Tracy.

That's what I thought when I saw this lightning bolt strike last night. We had a thunder storm here (fairly rare, I might add) and so I went out, like I did during our last lightning storm, in the cold and wet, to get some lightning photos. The noise of this particular strike nearly deafened me! It struck less than 1km away, so the thunder came almost instantaneously.I took this picture on "B" shutter mode with about a 20-second exposure at F6.4. The lightning you see in the picture is actually the result of two strikes - one huge lightning strike (the large ball of white lightning on the left), and another smaller one almost directly after.Because of the long exposure, and the brightness of the lightning, I had to use the GIMP to adjust the saturation curve for this image to make the lightning bolts visible. But I can assure you it isn't "touched up" in the common sense of the word - this is exa | | By: David's Nature Photography Gallery

| | Game 46: Avalanche 3, Lightning 0 | | 2008-01-16 10:48:37 | | And just like that, the Colorado Avalanche have won three games in a row, all on the road. Sure, those three wins came against lackluster Southeast Division teams, but three wins is six points, and the Avs will take every one of them. Getting a shutout last night probably couldn't have come at a better time for a number of reasons. Let me name them: If it's true that the Avs are indeed shopping Jose Theodore around by playing him in every single game on the road, his three consecutive wins and shutout last night were perfectly timed. Nobody needs a goalie as bad as the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Theo made a great case why he could be both a source of solidity in net as well as a bit of salary cap relief if traded for. What better place to send him than Tampa if it meant somebody like Vincent Lecavalier came the other way? Just a thought... No other Northwest Division team won last night. Vancouver lost to Columbus. Calgary lost to Nashville. Edmonton lost to Los Angeles. Minnesota didn't play. Just like that, the Avs are now right back into contention in the division, in third place just one point behind the co-leading Canucks and Wild. Theodore's shutout (his first in four seasons and the team's first of the year) is further testament that playing just one goalie---any goalie---on a consistent basis is better than constantly rotating them. Despite getting off to a slow start with a boring first period (minus the first two minutes that saw both Lappy and Cody McLeod get in fights), the Avs turned up the heat in the second by scoring two power play goals. Holy shit! That's right, TWO power play goals. First Jeff Finger scored from the point, then Paul Stastny added his own tally a while later. No other goals were scored until late in the third period when Milan Hejduk found the back of the empty Lightning net and sealed the deal. No that the | | By: Mile High Hockey | | |
| | Game 46: Avalanche At Lightning, Preview And Open Thread | | 2008-01-15 13:20:11 | | The Avalanche finish their tour of the Southeast Division (and their five-game road trip) tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning, despite boasting league-leading scorer Vincent Lecavalier, are the second-worst team in the league behind Los Angeles. The Lightning only really have one scoring line (Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Vaclav Prospal), so all Coach Q really has to do is set McCormick, Lappy and Ben Guite on them the whole game and shut them down. If they fail, it's only Jose Theodore between the Lightning's big boys and the goal line, and his impending meltdown could happen at any moment. Let's hope it doesn't. After all, Theodore's fragile hold on the starting position could be gone in an instant, and we certainly wouldn't want that to happen. Poor Peter Budaj would have to shake the cobwebs off and somehow instantly win five games in a row if he ever wants to get consistent playing time again. Coach Q hates him, apparently. The game starts tonight at 5:30 PM Mountain time, 7:30 PM Eastern. Happy open threading to all! ESPN preview. | | By: Mile High Hockey | | |

| | Dogs Fear Of Thunder And Lightning | | 2007-11-14 00:30:00 | | There are various environmental sounds that cause a dog to become afraid or frightened. It doesn't matter whether the animal is living in a crowded metropolitan city or a spacious rural town; the chance of inclement weather causing physical and/or mental distress is high. A dog's fears of noise and light are big concerns for pet owners, but there are ways to decrease your dog's fear of lightning and thunder.Dog owners worry that a dog will become frightened during a thunderstorm. This fear results from the appearance and sound of lightning and thunder. Dogs have an instinctual fear of loud noises and flashing light. When two clouds are separated by a lightning bolt, then re-merge, a flash of light and sustained, loud 'rumble' occur. Upon seeing the flash, dogs are alerted, knowing that the sharp 'crack' of thunder will follow and scare them. When animals become fearful, their immediate reaction is physical. | | Do you know why lightning happens? | | 2007-10-29 09:36:58 | | Prof. Know Why explains: In one line, lightning is a bright flash of electricity that is produced by a thunderstorm. Within a thundercloud way up in the sky, many small bits of ice (frozen raindrops) bump into each other as they move around in the air. All of these collisions create an electric charge. After a while, the whole cloud fills up with electrical charges. The positive charges or protons form at the top of the cloud and the negative charges or electrons form at the bottom of the cloud. Lightning results from the buildup and discharge of this electrical energy between positively and negatively charged areas. Lightning can occur within the cloud or between the cloud and the ground as well. In the second case, this electrical charge strikes around anything that sticks up, such as mountains, people, or single trees. When a lightning bolt travels from the cloud to the ground it actually opens up a little hole in the air, called a channel. Once the light is gone, the a | | By: WHY CORNER | | |

There was a blue bump protruding through his crew-cropped hair, a bruise in his side, thorns embedded in the forearms and shoulders, and an ugly burn on the side of the head. Those were the fresh vestiges of violence impinged upon O’Connor’s body. Maria Teresa Camacho's photoFive days before he still walked about in the city of Buenos Aires. | | Lightning Struck By Freak Injury | | 2007-09-23 12:01:00 | | Dan Boyle, the high-scoring, highly-effective defensive star of the Tampa Bay Lightning won't be scoring any more goals for a little while. In a brief lapse of attention, he managed to drop a skate on himself in the locker room, cutting a tendon in his wrist. Now he'll need surgery and rehab time. Oops.In other cheerful news for the Lightning, they lost their pre-season game against the Capitals and Vincent Lecavalier, their 50 goal-scorer, left early with one of those pesky "undisclosed upper body" injuries. Not good.I have a feeling they'll be losing a lot more games to the Capitals if this injury bug keeps up. It could only get worse for the Lightning if Martin St. Louis hits his head walking under a locker room bench. | | By: Dear Lord Stanley

“We’ve been pretty honest with his agent in terms of where it has to fit for us,” Feaster said Wednesday.
Feaster goes on to say that although he is “communicating and talking” with Craig’s representatives, he is not close to signing the restricted free agent.
“I’m not overly optimistic right now.”
Word is that the Lightning have offered a three-year deal at $750,000 per season, while Craig’s camp have countered with a two-year deal at $1 million per.
However, once the two sides head into arbitration on Friday in Toronto, those number will change. Cristodero expects Craig to “ask for one year at about $1.2-million,” and the Lightning to reduce their offer to $650,000.

There are lots of things we must fear in nature: sharks, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, bears, hurricanes, icebergs, etc.
Add to that list the seemingly innocuous blue sky. That’s right… some poor landscaper in the Miami area was struck by lightning on a beautiful, sunny and freakin’ CLOUDLESS day.

The Lightning Car Company (LCC) is targeting a range for its Lightning GT models of approximately 250 miles and a top speed of 130 mph or 150 mph.The LLC Lightning GT is powered by four, hub mounted electric motors claimed to produce at least 700bhp in total. Each motor has a maximum torque rating at the wheel of 553lb ft, available virtually from zero rpm. The firm is aiming to produce three models: the regular ‘GT’; the lighter ‘GTS’ version that should do 0-60mph in under 4 seconds, and the longer range ‘GTSE’ said to do over 250 miles. Even though it looks like a warped TVR, the Lightning GT Electric Supercar might prove itself to be a Tesla Roadster on steroids. With 700 horsepower, there will be three models available: a luxury version, a sports version, and an extended range version. The lightweight sports model will run from 0-60 in less than 4 seconds.
The GT will only be available in the UK starting in 2008, but if the company does well you can eventually expect them to make it to the States. At $300,000 though, you might want to stick with the Tesla Roadster for now.
We see these brand new car companies doing very well at creating these awesome, fast, rear-wheel-drive electric supercars, but when will we see a company create a practical, family-oriented electric car? While I wouldn’t want one, it would be nice to see this electric car trend take off. After that, I’m sure more companies would take it seriously and start making more similar models available. You can hack the way your PC uses the Domain Name System (DNS), the technology underlying all Web browsing. It's far simpler to do than you might imagine, as you'll see in this article.Understanding DNSBefore you start, it's a good idea to get a basic understanding of how DNS works. When you type in a URL such as www.computerworld.com, that URL needs to be translated into a numeric IP address that Web servers and Internet routers can understand. When you type in a URL, a DNS server does the translation, from www.computerworld.com to 65.221.110.98, for example.DNS servers live on the Internet, and your computer contacts them with the request to do that translation, which is commonly called name resolution. According to Artyukhin’s agent, Mark Gandler, the take-it-or-leave-it, one-year, $475,000 offer the Lightning made recently was only meant to “punish Artyukhin for turning down offers before last season.”
“I am surprised the team continued to build up the anger that was there a year ago, but now it’s kind of busting through the seams, ” Gandler said. “The offer in itself is proof of that anger. The punishment aspect of the offer is so obvious, it hits you right in the forehead.”
So, instead of returning to the NHL, Artyukhin has “signed to play another season in Russia, this time with Avangard Omsk.”
