2008 Denver Broncos - Breaking Down The Roster #6 -- Linebacker
    2008-07-24 13:20:48
Boss Bailey is a big addition at Linebacker My, how quickly things can change.  Two years ago, the linebacker position for the Denver Broncos was considered a strength.  With team-leader Al Wilson manning the middle, D.J. Williams on the strong side and Ian Gold returning to play Will, the Broncos seemed set for the foreseeable future.  All that changed on December 3, 2006 when Al Wilson was injured on a punt return.  As I watched Wilson get carried off the field it seemed the morale on the field and the energy in the stands went with it.  The Broncos, who only 2 weeks before were 7-2, lost their 3rd straight game and a season that seemed to have so much promise continued to unravel.  Wilson would try to play the next week, but the damage was done.  After being held out of the season-ending loss to the San Francisco 49'ers Wilson never wore a Broncos uniform, or any uniform for that matter, again.  The Broncos lost their identity that nig

2008 Jacksonville Jaguars Signing: Linebacker Lamar Myles
    2008-05-05 13:07:31
The Jacksonville Jaguars are a popular team for undrafted free-agents because they have a good habit finding starters in the ranks of the "undraftable".  Jack Del Rio fosters an environment of competition in his off-season that allows for players that might lack the draft credentials to have a fair and reasonable shot at making the roster.  Remember, the undrafted free agent is playing for his NFL career, just getting a shot to be on the practice squad will increase the chance that a player proves himself to a team and continue to live the dream of playing on Sundays. In Jacksonville, there's a realistic shot of not only going to the practice squad, but to make the final roster and make an impact.  To be fair, the Jaguars roster is pretty stacked to begin with this year, but with the lack of draft picks due to the Derrick Harvey/Quentin Groves moves, there is just enough wiggle room to allow a hard working and determined UDFA to make an impact and be on the final ros

Van Pelt or Banks for outside linebacker?
    2008-04-29 06:25:25
I hope you all like the new platform! After last week's disappointment I was sneaky and didn't tell you it was coming today. Read the post below for all the new features, and for how to claim your account. And now, on with the show! Let's take a quick break from discussing the Giants' draft picks to resume voting for our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team. When we left off we had decided to use a 3-4 defense so that both Harry Carson and Sam Huff could be on the team. We had also decided that there was no need to vote on whether or not Lawrence Taylor belonged. We are simply giving LT one of the linebacker slots. That means we are down to choosing the other outside linebacker. This is a simple two-horse race -- it's either Brad Van Pelt or Carl Banks. Make a case for anyone else you want, but these are the only two deserving guys. So, let's look at the them. The Case for Van Pelt Before LT came along, Van Pelt was -- quite simply -- the best outside linebacker in the history of the

2008 NFL Draft: Jacksonville Selects Thomas Williams, Linebacker, USC
    2008-04-27 13:46:02
With the Dallas Cowboys trading up in the 5th round, the Jaguars now pick at 155.  WIth this as our first pick in the second day of the draft, it's important that we get at least a little value. That said, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected linebacker Thomas Williams  from the University of Southern California.  If anyone knows how to identify a linebacker, its Del Rio.  Our history of finding talented linebackers deep in the draft is well known About Thomas Williams : Never one to complain about his playing time, Williams went about filling any role the coaches asked. In addition to being a stellar performer on the coverage units, the instinctive player started at three different positions, including competing on both sides of the ball as a junior. In 49 games at Southern California, he started at strong-side linebacker for eight games as a sophomore, at fullback for two contests as a junior and as a middle linebacker for four games as a senior. Middle linebacker -- Huff or Carson?
    2008-04-17 23:14:17
The voting results for defensive end and tackle are in, showing a clear preference for Giants of more recent vintage. At end, Leonard Marshall will join Michael Strahan on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants' Team. He defeated Andy Robustelli, 30-25, in balloting. At tackle, Roosevelt Grier was the top vote-getter. In what I see as a clear indication that our voters are younger, and seemingly not that interested in honoring the old-time Giants, Keith Hamilton easily outdistanced Hall of Famer Arnold Weinmeister for the second slot. Now we move on to what I think will be a very interesting decision -- middle linebacker. This is an obvious two-horse race. So, I won't mess around. You get to choose between two Hall of Famers, Sam Huff and Harry Carson. No one else belongs in the conversation. I am incredibly curious to see how this one turns out. The Case for Huff A five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All Pro, Huff was a Giant from 1956 thru 1963 before spending the l

New Giants' linebacker plans on starting
    2008-03-17 22:49:30
Ever since the Giants announced his signing last week, David Carr seems to be the focus of most of the Giants-related discussion. Hardly anybody has been talking about Danny Clark, the free-agent linebacker who signed the same day. It is Clark, though, who figures to see the field a lot more often than Carr. Clark, on Sirius Radio with Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News Sunday morning, made it clear that he intends to earn a starting spot. "I am a starter," Clark, 30 said. "I am a starter in this league and I come to the Giants expecting to win a starting spot. There's a starting spot that Kawika Mitchell left open as a weak-side linebacker. Gerris Wilkinson is a guy that's been in the organization for a while and is the next in line, so to speak. In my opinion, my confidence - and you know, it's not a cockiness, it's a confidence - I'm expecting to go to win that spot." Here is the audio of the interview in its entirety. At first blush, you could read those co

Bills Have Enviable Depth at Linebacker
    2008-03-14 09:04:26
Crowell finally has help at LB (BuffaloBills.com) Heading into the 2008 off-season, the Buffalo Bills were facing serious issues in their linebacking corps. The team had two solid starters in Angelo Crowell and the still-young Paul Posluszny, but beyond those two talent, there were some major concerns. Add to that the fact that long-time reserves such as Coy Wire, Josh Stamer and Mario Haggan were on their way out of town, and you begin to see the seriousness of the issue. Then, on the first day of free agency, the team signed linebacker Kawika Mitchell, a tough competitor coming off of a Super Bowl victory. That one move alone changed the entire landscape of Buffalo's linebacking corps so that the position went from a team weakness to a team strength. Finally - a Physical Starting Trio Mitchell's addition adds some much-needed size and physicality to Buffalo's linebacking corps - specifically at the weak side position. The team's lightest projected starti

    Broncos Sign Linebacker Boss Bailey
    2008-03-06 17:18:02
The Denver Broncos on Thursday signed unrestricted free-agent linebacker Boss Bailey, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Bailey (6-foot-3, 235 pounds) is entering his sixth NFL season and joins the Broncos after spending the last five years with Detroit. The Lions selected him in the second round (34th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft from the University of Georgia. Bailey, who has started at least 11 games in every season that he has played, is the younger brother of Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey and followed him as an All-Southeastern Conference selection at Georgia. The two will be the fourth pair of brothers to play for the Broncos and will join Dave and Doug Widell (1990-92) along with Eldon and William Danenhauer (1960) as the third set to play for the franchise at the same time. Jets Sign Runningback & Linebacker
    2007-07-28 00:20:43
According to Hoss Aultman of Jets Confidential, the New York Jets have signed RB Tony Fisher and LB Mark Zalewski. Fisher rushed for 880 yards and scored four touchdowns in 235 rushing attempts for the Green Bay Packers over his first four seasons in the NFL. He signed on with the St. Louis Rams for the 2006 season and was used primarily as a third-down back. Fisher ran the ball six times and caught 14 passes out of the backfield, however he was placed on injured reserved with a torn ACL ending his season. He is definitely a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield bringing in 48 receptions for 347 yards with 1 touchdown in 2005 behind Ahman Green. The Jets were desperate for a veteran runningback after losing Cedric Houston. Zalewski tried out for the team during minicamp, but wasn’t signed. He spent his college career at the University of Wisconsin. Zalewski was a team captain for a young Badgers defense in 2006.

Pats Sign Linebacker Chad Brown; Release Three
    2007-07-20 16:56:09
In a move that was talked about last week, the Pats have signed veteran free agent linebacker Chad Brown to a contract. In doing that, the team also announced they have released three players. Brown, who is now 36, comes back to New England after playing with the Pats in their Super Bowl season of 2005. Last year he was with Pittsburgh, the team he was originally drafted by in 1993 out of Colorado. With the Steelers last year, Brown had seven tackles and one sack in playing in eight games. The year before with New England, Brown had 57 tackles in 15 games. Three of the tackles came on special teams. He has 79 career sacks in 14 NFL seasons playing with the Steelers, Seahawks and Pats. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker was a four-year starter for the Steelers before he headed to the Seahawks, where he played eight seasons. Released from the Pats on Thursday included cornerback Antwain Spann, wide out Jonathan Smith, and tight end Jake Nordin. Spann played in eight games with the Pats l

Bengal Linebacker Nicholson Arrested for Assault on Woman
    2007-05-19 16:47:58
I guess the whole deal of the Cincinnati Bengals trying to clean up their image is out the window.  Friday, Linebacker A.J. Nicholson was arrested on a domestic violence charge after a woman called 911 on Friday afternoon to say she had been assaulted by Nicholson.  The woman, Victoria Johnson, says that Nicholson punched her in the face, and there was swelling around Johnson’s left eye.  He was charged with fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor.  Of course this is the first arrest of a Bengal, a team that has been in more legal trouble than any other, since league commish Roger Goodell laid the law down awhile ago. Goodell has already dealt with two Bengals - wide out Chris Henry, and Linebacker Odell Thurman.  Both are already suspended for misconduct.  Nicholson was on the list already as one nine Bengals arrested during a nine-month span.  When Goodell talks about teams that need to get in line with the League’s policy’s, the Bengals are at the top of the li

    Chargers may select linebacker first
    2007-04-25 19:43:00
Virtually every “expert” expects the San Diego Chargers to pick a wide receiver or safety in the first round of this weekend’s NFL draft. But what about a linebacker? Now that Donnie Edwards has bolted the Chargers for Kansas City, San Diego is in desperate need of someone to step up inside. It’s going to be hard for anybody to match Edwards’ production. Not only did he lead the Chargers in tackles each of the past five seasons, he also seemed to make the key interception whenever the team needed a game saver. Can Matt Wilhelm or Stephen Cooper do the same when they likely start at inside linebacker in 2007? We’ll likely find out as Randall Godfrey (who started alongside Edwards the past three seasons) is also expected to move on.Certainly, the Chargers are set at outside linebacker with Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips. But back-up linebackers Carlos Polk, Marques Harris and Tim Dobbins are just that – back ups.Without Edwards, the Chargers will go from a very strong lineb
