Ok we've been accused in the past of talking a lot but not actually saying very much about tactics, of being vocal about what we are doing, but not so much how go about it.As this is the SEO spec ops group, on mainly covert operations, that's to be expected really, but here's a few things we usually do as pretty much SOPs (standard operating procedures to you SEO Civilians)1) Link to pages on sites that link to you - especially new links that arent yet cached - find somewhere else suitable & if possible drop a decent contextual link from there to it. It will often speed up caching, and gives the outgoing link a little jolt. Bad Linking and the Worlds Worst SERP Snippet

Last week I blogged about spam factory websites. This week I'm still in the mood for some spam (yum yum etc.), so when my vanity search for "spam factory websites" brought this back I just had to share it: If I had a site that allowed snippets like this I'd go berserk- it says, very clearly, that the site is spam- big style! The original blog was about fixing micro-site SEO issues, and used some text in an example (read the SEO blog, it makes sense in context): "Aircraft abrasives provided by ACorp.com, suppliers to the aircraft industry." The blog mentions aircraft just twice- in that sentence alone- and clearly has very little else to do with aircraft. Looking at the cached page you see the message: "These terms only appear in links pointing to this page: spam factory websites", so it's not a direct link, but that's not the point. If you dont already read the HOBO blog you should, its a good one. This week Shaun posted a tool to check who you are linking to ultimately, ie. who the sites you link to, link to.The tool is here: Bad Neighbourhood Tool Hobo's post about it is here:http://www.hobo-web.co.uk/seo-blog/bad-neighborhood-google-penalty/we ran the tool over our main domain and were a little surpised to see a few possibly questionable results, from sites we link to, linking out to suspect things, but on closer inspection not so surprised. The main offending link was actually from this blog, to a dodgy looking scraper site we had spotted, and posted about HERE which seemed to be fixing on keywords and tracking you around the internet almost when you used your name as the keyword.At the time we had a tag page on there which was showing forum posts and all sorts, thats what we linked to.Now thats gone and in it's place are syndicated Google ads for the anchor text shown in part below. Deep linking or internal linking seems to be a good way to make your web site/blog more balanced in the material that gets read and that gets indexed by the search engines. What you want to do is create a web of links within your own site; sort of like the way the Internet works (the World Wide Web). Here are some ways to deep link: Create a custom error page for 404 errors and put links on that page. I have not done this yet, but it makes sense...and I've seen it elsewhere. Even in error, your users get something useful. Group your best posts of the week or month together and post a summary at the end of that time period. You might even do one for the end of the year. Including links in the footer is also another great way to connect the various pieces of your site. I'll have to do that one too. Start a series of posts (part 1, part 2, etc.).
