| Lions 13, Giants 10: 'Kudos & Wet Willies' returns | | 2008-08-08 05:00:07 | | In sticking with tradition, let's review Thursday night's 13-10 exhibition season-opening loss to the Detroit Lions in 'Kudos & Wet Willies' style.
If you're new here, that's our version of 'thumbs up, thumbs down' or 'heroes & goats,' or whatever you want to call it. I will review every game with 'Kudos & Wet Willies,' often with some commentary spliced in.
Anyway, let's get down to business.
Kudos to ...
Anthony Wright and David Carr: The two quarterbacks who are battling to be Eli Manning's primary backup were both impressive. Wright was crisp, completing 9-of-13 passes for 116 yards. Carr was also sharp, completing 10-of-13 for 104 yards and one touchdown. If there was a negative, it was the two big penalties Carr took. One was for an illegal forward pass, crossing the line of scrimmage and throwing. The second was an intentional grounding that killed the Giants with about a minute to go.

Here is your first game day open thread of the 2008 season. The Giants, or at least whatever players the Giants have available, meet the Detroit Lions tonight in their first exhibition game.
A note about the thread. If you want to follow along during the game, keep your browser open to the comments throughout. The comments will 'auto-refresh' as they are posted, making it seem like a live blog.
We will see how this works out. I might still use some third-party live-blogging software during the season, but keeping your browser open to the comments during the game provides a pretty close facsimile.
Giants.com has comments from several players on the first exhibition game.
NorthJersey.com says the game provides a big opportunity for bit players.

Big Blue View will be taking a look at the Giants' opponent every week of the season, and we start with the first preseason game of the year against the Detroit Lions. Ed will post a Game day Open Thread a bit later on.
Detroit Lions
2007 Record: 7-9
Head Coach: Rod Marinelli
Last time they met: Giants beat the Lions 16-10 in Detroit, Michael Strahan sacked Jon Kitna 3 times, and the Giants picked Kitna off twice down the stretch to preserve the victory. Kitna said after the game the Giants "were not the better team", and called them the "worst 7-3 team he has ever seen".
Changes: Mike Martz and his pass happy offense are gone, replaced by O-line coach Jim Colletto. The Lions offense should be more balanced this year, with the question being how effective rookie Kevin Smith and 2007 disappointment Tatum Bell can be. First round draft pick Gosder Cherilus is being counted on to anchor an inconsistent offensive line.

For many urban families and children it may be the closest they get to an experience in the natural outdoors. But it is a worthy substitute that should not be missed. The Denver Zoo is not just a zoo. It is an environment that transports you from the metro urban population to a sitting that makes you feel you are truly in the outdoors, in the habitat of the wildlife you are witnessing. The zoo is an educational classroom. It is a place to visit, a place teens and adults can volunteer. When you are there it absorbs you into the sense you are moving from the plains of South Africa to the rainforests of the Amazon to the world’s deserts, the rivers and lakes around the globe and the tundra and frozen artic circle. The realism of the animal and bird environments cast you into a kind of outdoors reality show. Infamous as a place of torture and executions, and home to the Crown Jewels, the Tower was also home to lions, which were charismatic symbols of monarchy. Now researchers have used DNA evidence to analyse two members of the royal menagerie, the oldest being late 13th to late 14th century (1280-1385) and 'youngest' 15th century (1420-1480), the only medieval big cat remains found in England. They conclude that they were male Barbary lions, a species that hails from north Africa, where no natural lion population remains today. The Jets have allowed Vilma to shop himself anywhere other than to the Patriots. When I heard that, I hoped Miami could find a way to bring him home. It would be unfortunate if he ended up in Detroit. I find it hard to root for the Lions just because they might have one of my favorite players. And if you were hoping to sign Asante Samuel, then we might be out of luck there too. At least that is what I take away from the following line - "Jon Machota is a freelance writer who shares his opinions with freep.com. To share your opinion, e-mail sportsletters@freepress.com." Anyway, in this intriguing plea to Lions' management, Machota explains why the Lions should dig deep to sign Wilson. I love Al Wilson. He was a great player for the Broncos. At 31, however, I have a hard time believing he can come back and be the force he was 4 or 5 years ago. The more I think about it, though, giving Wilson fat cash is exactly the type of move the Lions would make.... You know how I feel about "if's", and Machota's "case" is filled with them.....Breaking news, Teddy Lehman, Paris Lenon and Boss Bailey are not starting middle linebackers in the NFL. | | Fletch's Film Review: Lions for Lambs; Before the Devil Knows You're Dead | | 2007-11-20 23:46:00 | | A couple short takes so that I can catch up before the holiday:Lions for LambsWhen your in high school (or maybe college), often times, though not often enough, your teachers might bring in a movie to demonstrate a theme or analogy to the current events of the day. Covering the Civil War in history class? Watch Glory. Covering Watergate? How bout All the President's Men? Not coincidentally, the star of that film is the director/co-star of this one, which I might show if I were covering the ongoing war in the Middle East.A bit unfortunately though, the movie feels a bit too much like class, which (as I alluded to with the marketing efforts previously) is probably the chief reason it's failing at the box office. It's preachy. It's lecture-y. It doesn't feature splashy action or much of a plot to speak of, and the sets are sparse, to say the least. But that's a shame, because Robert Redford has a clear message for its audience, and it's a powerful one that gives the film an | | By: Blog Cabins
| | Hollywood Takes ANOTHER Hit: Lions For Lambs, A Spectacular Failure | | 2007-11-12 19:16:00 | | The term "learning from your mistakes," can apply to many things. If you put your hand into an open fire, it will get burned, it will hurt, and you learn not to do that again. Or perhaps carrying a load of items stacked up obscuring your view, from point A to point B, and you walk into a wall. You may get a bruise or two, and if anyone else saw it, perhaps a bruised "pride." You learn to not carry so much so you can see where you are going. The term apparently DOES NOT apply to Hollywood and its continuing to develop extremely bad movie plots. During WWII, although it could be technically considered propaganda, News and Hollywood put out PRO American stuff. America rallied behind the soldiers, and the war was completed. | | The lions roar of brigadier Prasath Samarasingha | | 2007-09-14 06:36:21 | | It is reported that Brigadier Prasath Samarasingha has been appointed as the defense advisor to the high commission of Sri Lanka in Britain and will be leaving to UK in the coming days.Brigadier Prasath Samarasingha has been doing a wonderful job as the media spokesman of Sri Lankan army since 2005. He has been well respected among the media personals for being supportive and professional.Brigadier Prasath Samarasingha was appointed for this post at the end of a dark era for Sri Lanka army under vicious regime of CBK and Ranil Wickramasingha. It was the time when intelligent personals of SL army had been gun down by LTTE terrorists and country was under the mockery of 'Pongu Tamil' jubilations of terrorists. Then military spokesman Brigadier Sarth Munasingha was doing all the dirty laundering for the then governments justifying all these vicious acts by LTTE against our mother country and its forces (for which Brigadier Sarth Munasingha has been now given political ransom by being appointed as a party organizer for UNP).Brigadier Prasath Samarasingha made this negative role into a truly positive role and just as a lion roaring he was straight and up to the point in all his statements and media briefings.90% of the war is fought in the mind of the people. It is well known fact that there are handfuls of media personals that are getting paid by western political bureaus, NGOs and political parties. Brigadier Prasath Samarasingha was very professional and erect in answering these vicious media personals. He never gives into undue pressure of these waged reporters. One of the arrogant BBC Sinhala service (Sandeshaya) media personal named Bandara got to learn many of lesions from the Brigadier when he tries to outsmart him but only in vain.Brigadier Prasath Samarasingha was able to represent the dignity and majesty of Sri Lankan army in the media circle and the nation. It will be a great responsibility for his successor's to keep up the high standards set by Brigadier Prasath Samarasingha. We all as true patriotic Sri Lankans wish Brigadier Prasath Samarasingha very best on his next appointment as the advisor to the high commission of Sri Lanka in Britain. Now he will be able to serve our mother land, in the fight against terrorism, on a new dimension. | | By: Lanka Rising | | |

The Nation is the place where we take a nugget of popular opinion...and tear it to shreds. You see, some things, even though they are believed and promoted and spread by the masses, are simply untrue. So welcome all you doubters and haters to the Naysayers Nation...In our first installment, we take a look at the Detroit Lions offense, a squad many are touting as the second coming of the "Greatest Show on Turf." With puppetmaster and offensive mastermind Mike Martz pulling the strings, many experts say that the Lions' O will put up huge numbers like Martz's St. Louis teams did in the recent past. These folks are also touting Jon Kitna, Roy Williams, and rookie sensation Calvin Johnson as fantasy must-haves for 2007.We here at TJI have a slightly different take on the matter. The Lions had until 4pm today to sign Redding or he would have been forced to only accept a one-year deal with no chance of an extension until the 08 season.
Redding was the Lions third round pick of the 2003 NFL Draft. He will enter his fifth year with the team, and has played in 55 straight, making 48 straight starts. Last season he switched from defensive linemen to defensive tackle, and with it came his best season in which he tied for the league high in sacks for DT’s with eight. Redding came into the 06 season with a total of four sacks for his career.

| | Redding and The Lions Continue Working Towards a Deal | | 2007-07-15 20:06:04 | | The Lions look like they will have a deal in place with defensive lineman Cory Reddingbefore Monday’s deadline. Redding, who had eight sacks a year ago and is a key piece to the Lions defense, is listed as the teams “franchise player” and with that label has until 4pm Monday to come to a deal, otherwise he will have to accept the one-year tender offer of $6.77 million.
Detroit could have a solid defense in 2007, but for sure need a happy and productive Redding in order to do it. With the team playing a 4-3 defense, Kalimba Edwards at left end, Shaun Rogers at left tackle, Redding at right tackle and Dewayne White at right end, the Lions could be one of the best d-lines in the NFC. But again, take Redding out of that mix, and the drop is going to be felt along the line.
Redding, drafted out of Texas, has played four seasons with the Lions. In those four seasons he has complied 12 sacks, 125 tackles, and played in 57 games. Last season truly was his best season, g | | By: NFL GridIron Gab

| | Lions and Redding Looking to Get Deal Done Before Monday | | 2007-07-11 21:09:15 | |
Lions franchise player, defensive lineman Cory Redding, and the team are working toward a long-term contract in advance of the upcoming Monday deadline. “We’ve been in constant communication,” Redding’s agent, Kennard McGuire, told The Detroit Free Press. “I think the mere fact that we’re dialoguing speaks for itself.”
Both sides must reach a deak by Monday, or, under NFL rules, Redding cannot sign a long-term deal until after the season. He could play this year only by signing the franchise tender — a one-year contract for $6.775 million, the average salary of the five highest-paid defensive tackles in the league last season.
After moving from end to tackle six games into the 2006 season, Redding racked up eight sacks - enough to lead the Lions for the year. The Lions recruited him hard this winter, but the sides didn’t reach a long-term deal. | | Lions | | 2007-07-07 21:27:11 | | I’m not quite sure what the point of this article is, because every football fan already knows what I am about to say, and no one else cares, and its not even football season, but here it goes anyhow… I’m beyond hurt, I’m beyond caring… I’m just sick to my stomach. The Detroit Lions were never great, but when I was a kid they had greatness. There was Barry Sanders to watch, the greatest running back ever to play the game. Watching him run was like watching a gazelle evading a cheetah, it was pure motion, pure elation. He was a little blue streak doing things that were not humanly possible. It was simple greatness. The Lions might not have won any games that actually mattered, they might have disappointed, but at least they won. At least they had players who you felt cared, who you knew were good and at least you figured that the people in charge knew what the hell they were doing. Not anymore. I’m not even going to name names. It’s just gone all downhill from there. Our GM is a complete moron, our owner is senile, our coach has no experience. How can you give a guy a contract extension when everyone on the face of the planet can see that he deserves to be fired? I’d rather have Black Manta running the team than the idiot who is now. And, the saddest thing is, I don’t even fucking care anymore. I’m so numb to it all. Why should I give a fuck when they don’t? I guess I’m still a Lions fan, but I don’t care anymore. I feel like I’m in an abusive relationship and I can’t get out. I’ve finally just accepted my fate. Maybe I’ll still wear my Lions jersey, and maybe I’ll watch a few quarters of the game if it’s on and I have nothing else to do… but I won’t care anymore. Their perpetual loosing will no longer affect me. I just expect it now. The losing wouldn’t be so bad if I just felt they cared. But, whatever, I give up. | | By: Blast Shields Down
| | Lions QB Kitna Says Team Will Win More than 10 Games | | 2007-06-24 19:18:15 | | Either Jon Kitna has been on some sort of medication, or he has not checked out the Lions roster recently. For some reason, Kitna went on record in the Detroit Free Press on Sunday and stated that the Lions, yes, the Detroit Lions, will win more than 10 games this upcoming season. Yes, the same Lions that went 3-13 last season, earning them WR Calvin Johnson with the second pick in this past April’s draft. Yes, the same Lions that right now are a laughing stock to the rest of the National Football Leauge. Yes, the same Lions that have gone a putrid 24-72 in the Matt Millen Era.
But here is Kitna, one of the worst starting QB’s in the league, going on record making predictions that make the rest of the NFL laugh. “See, that was 10 games before I saw the schedule, too,” the quarterback told WDFN-AM (1130) this week. “I’ll keep to myself what I think we actually will win. But it’s more than 10 games. I think, last year, man, it really su | | By: NFL GridIron Gab
