Pender Island Events - Canada Day Long Weekend June 27-July1
    2008-06-27 13:44:00
It's here -- one of the busiest summer weekends here on Pender.  The ferry lineups are long, it's hard to find a parking space down at the Driftwood Centre, and the grocery store will run out of bread by Sunday afternoon.  But, all is well...most residents are happy to share Pender's wealth with our summertime visitors.  After all, the quiet winter months are not far away, and there will be lots of time for winter walks in the woods with no one else around, and lo

Long weekend of speeding and fatalities
    2008-05-20 09:33:00
The Victoria Day long weekend was once again marred by too many needless tragedies, police said Monday, and lamented that young men in particular seem to repeat the same deadly mistakes year after year. Police spent most of the weekend at a lake in Richmond Hill, Ont., about 30 kilometres north of Toronto, searching for two men who were presumed dead after their canoe capsized early Sunday

Events on Pender Island - Victoria Day Long Weekend May 15-18
    2008-05-15 11:24:00
Well, the weatherman says that the sun is coming...it's still a bit gray over here on Pender, but it's definitely warmer than yesterday.  Yesterday, we actually had a fire in our woodstove.  A fire in May! That's the first time I've been able to say that in the five years since we moved here.  Hardly a big deal given the weather related events in other parts of the world, but my wife is getting a bit impatient for the warmer weather -- she has tomatoes and sunflowe

Get Ready for the Long Weekend
    2008-02-15 12:20:00
Are you as excited about the long weekend as I am? Probably. If you have kids though, it's no walk in the park to keep them upbeat on a cold winter weekend. But my mom had the right idea when we were little to keep us entertained. A book club! Now a days we have the advantage of DVD clubs too like the Disney Movie Club. I could have used this when I was a kid, and I'm telling you as a lover of Disney movies even at 27, I'm considering joining myself! The best part about the Disney Movie Club is that there's no membership fee. Basically you get the benefit of your first three Disney movies for just $1.99 each with free shipping, then get special deals on other Disney movies. For me, it's a matter of completing my collection as I'm pretty sure I already own most of the Pixar films and my favorite classics like The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. But go see for yourself. This is really going to help entertain ME for weekends to come, and I'm an adult! Stop thinking about work for the w

    Busy and long weekend
    2007-05-02 23:13:00
So this weekend it was back to the nasty suit shopping again. We started on Saturday in Düsseldorf, where I found two more suits for Lou-sensei. The suits do look very European but they're still very professional. Of course we didn't just search for suits in Germany, we also searched for Starbucks! Gyano and I are huge Starbucks fans and we're still desperately waiting for the first coffee house to open in the Netherlands. I heard they're actually opening one at Schiphol Airport soon but it's on the other side of customs, so if you want a frappucino or caramel machiato you'd have to buy a plane ticket first. But it's a start, maybe by the time I visit my home country they have a Starbucks store in my street ;). Anyway, we've always had to travel to Germany to taste some Starbucks coffee, and we actually did on more than one occasion. So last Saturday, we endulged ourselves in all the Starbucks goodness... three times! For lunch we had sushi and for dinner we had some typical G
