Britney Spears Arrives in Louisiana for Jamie Lynn Birth
    2008-06-18 16:06:40
Britney Spears has more important things to worry about than court dates.Like her future niece. While Spears' criminal attorney was in court in Van Nuys, Calif., asking for another extension in the pop star's pending criminal case regarding her driving-without-a-valid-license charge, Spears herself was on a Delta flight heading to Louisiana to be by sister Jamie Lynn's side for the birth of her first child. In an apparent cost-cutting effort, the "Gimme More" singer, who typically jets around on private planes, flew commercial. She quietly slipped out of her gated community around 5 a.m. and headed with her dad, Jamie, and brother, Bryan, to Los Angeles International Airport, where they boarded a Delta flight to New Orleans, an hour ride from the Spears homestead in Kentwood. Her flight landed at 12:53 p.m. CT, and Britney headed straight to mother Lynne's house.Jamie Lynn, 17, is having a child (reportedly a girl) with fiancé Casey Aldridge, 19, and is set to give birth any day now, sou...

    Louisiana Food Stamp Program
    2008-06-13 00:11:00
The Food Stamp Program provides monthly benefits that help low-income households buy the food they need for good health. The goal of the program is to promote the general welfare and to safeguard the health and well being of the population through the issuance of benefits to all eligible households. For most households, food stamps account for only a portion of their food budgets; they must also use their own funds to buy food sufficient to last throughout the month.Social Services Analysts in t...

Louisiana buckles the Bible in favour of death!
    2008-04-16 11:05:24
The Parable of the Lost Sheep is seemingly lost on some folk in Louisiana. They'd rather the lost sheep be fried in oil than be let back into the fold. The Good Shepherd is more concerned for the lost sheep, but if you've just tightened your belt a couple of notches too much, the message might get blurred in the subsequent fainting fit. The State of Louisiana is seeking to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that death "is not cruel and unusual punishment for the rape of a child" and thus doesn't violate the 8th Amendment. This comes on the day that the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the lethal three-drug cocktail used in most U.S. executions during the past 30 years. No matter that the stuff takes a time to wend its way through the veins. I suppose these judges describe themselves as Christians. Do they say their prayers with petitions to God to bless this killing cocktail?I find it amazing that, when confronted with a crucifix and mention of such punishment, Americans get ...

Bobby Jindal sworn in as governor of Louisiana
    2008-01-14 19:07:18
Piyush "Bobby" Jindal was today inaugurated governor of the U.S. state of Louisiana. He is the country's first Indian American elected governor and the first non-white governor of Louisiana since P. B. S. Pinchback in 1872. At 36 years old, he is currently the nation's youngest governor as well. Jindal succeeds Kathleen Blanco as the state governor. The inauguration ceremony was held at the state capitol in Baton Rouge. In a speech, Jindal vowed to put an end to political corruption in the state and speed up recovery from the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season."We must win a war on corruption and incompetence in government," said Jindal.Jindal was serving a second term in the House of Representatives when he was elected last October. He previously served as the head of Louisiana's Department of Health and Hospitals, a post to which he was appointed at the age of 24. A year earlier, he had graduated from University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar.Jindal is the son of Punjabi immigrants who came to Baton Rouge shortly before his birth. As a teenager, he converted from Hinduism to Catholicism. He takes his nickname from the character Bobby on television's The Brady Bunch. ...

Gubernatorial Watch: Jindal Wins In Louisiana
    2007-10-21 16:02:22
The only real question heading into Saturday's jungle primary in Louisiana was whether or not Republican Congressman Bobby Jindal would garner enough support to avoid a November runoff. Jindal answered that question with a dominating performance throughout the state, earning 54% of the vote, avoiding the runoff, and more than tripling the total of his closest competitor. At 36, Jindal is set to become the youngest sitting governor in the United States."My mom and dad came to this country in pursuit of the American dream. And guess what happened. They found the American Dream to be alive and well right here in Louisiana," Jindal, the son of Indian immigrants, told cheering supporters last night. With 99% of precincts reporting, Democrat Walter Boasso finished with 226,114 votes (17%); Independent John Georges with 186,585 votes (14%); and Democrat Foster Campbell with 161,359 votes (12%)--all well behind the 698,835 votes Jindal earned. He won 60 of the states 64 parishes, focusing heavily on the northern part of the state, where he underperformed four years ago.Jindal won a plurality in the 2003 primary, only to see Democrat Kathleen Blanco claim a narrow victory in the runoff. Following the defeat, Jindal was elected to Congress from Louisiana's 1st District in 2004. Blamed for state's poor response to Hurricane Katrina, Blanco opted against a re-election bid, clearing the way for her former Republican rival. A special election will now be called to fill the soon-to-be vacated Congressional seat in the Republican-heavy district.Jindal's victory is not symbolic of any shift in the national political landscape, but merely a reflection of the fact that Louisiana continues to drift away from Democrats. The displacement of voters from the heavily-Democratic New Orleans further pushes the state into the Republican column. Democrat's should be disheartened, however, at the fact that they were unable to push Jindal to a runoff, with disappointing results around the state....

    Senate Watch: Louisiana
    2007-07-23 18:32:00
The Louisiana Senate race appears to be the toughest test for any Democratic incumbent seeking re-election. Louisiana politics are nothing if not unpredictable, so it remains to be seen just how vulnerable Senator Mary Landrieu may be in 2008. No clear Republican challenger has emerged, but the state has been trending to the Republicans and the demographics could be too much for Landrieu to overcome.Mary Landrieu was first elected to the Senate in 1996 in what became the tightest Senate race that year. Republicans accused Democrats of significant election fraud, leading to a long and highly partisan Senate investigation. Landrieu is part of strong Louisiana political family--her father was New Orleans mayor and her brother is currently the state's lieutenant governor. She served in the Louisiana House for much of the 1980s before becoming the state treasurer. Her narrow 1996 Senate election followed a failed attempt for the governor's office in 1995. Landrieu survived another ...

    Louisiana Governor's Race
    2007-02-16 22:31:00
The Cook Political Report has confirmed that former Senator John Breaux is considering entering the race for governor in Louisiana. It is suggested that Governor Kathleen Blanco, relatively unpopular in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, would be willing to step aside. With Blanco as the candidate the race would probably be rated a toss-up with a strong possibility of a Republican pickup. For the Republicans, Rep. Bobby Jindal has already indicated that he will seek the office again after narrowing losing to Blanco four years ago.Breaux, who did not seek re-election in 2004, was first elected to Congress in 1972 and joined the Senate in 1986. A pro-life centrist, Breaux was unable to keep his seat in Democratic hands with Republican David Vitter becoming the first Republican elected to the Senate from the state. A Breaux candidacy likely improves Democratic chances of holding the seat, not bogged down by the fallout from the handling of Katrina.Mary Landrieu, Louisiana's other senator, is ...
