The system is called MirrorPilot, and it does look like a slick way to add factory navigation with a minimum of effort on the automaker's part. It's also far nicer than suction-cupping some aftermarket unit to the windshield and dealing with its tangle of cables. It's not just a mirror with a display; the MirrorPilot incorporates a GPS receiver and antenna, as well as a speaker. The mirror itself self-dims electrochromically, and the display automatically zooms at intersections and also comes with a remote control. The screen may be small, but the cost is large; this unit will be priced above $1,000 when it goes on sale in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Just yesterday we reported that Tesla Motors has filed a lawsuit against Fisker Coachbuild, but now comes word that Tesla could be in some legal trouble of its own. Magna — a transmission maker — has filed a suit against Tesla for money it says the electric carmaker still owes it. During the development of the electric Roadster, Tesla ran into some development problems with the car's transmission. The car was originally slated to get a two-speed unit supplied by X-Trac, but that unit had durability issues so Tesla turned to Magna. Tesla subsequently decided not to use the Magna unit and developed its own before eventually deciding on a single speed unit (ultimately the car's electric motor had to be altered). The front brake assembly is still way too loose and I haven't been able to figure out how to adjust it.
