    Magnolia against bad breath
    2008-05-27 06:20:48
A new remedy against bad breath is magnolia. Chewing for half an hour on a mint with magnolia extract reduced the amount of bacteria in the mouth that cause bad breath by 60 percent. Chewing for half an hour on a ‘regular’ mint only killed about 3.6 percent of the bacteria.

    Cucumber Magnolia 'Golden Sun'
    2008-05-02 04:34:56
Cucumber MagnoliaMagnolia 'Golden Sun'Synonym: Magnolia acuminataWe had a big day on the new job yesterday. The crew is working like a well-oiled machine and they really did an amazing amount of work. I was able to do what I do without a lot of interference. There are 100’s of feet of Boxwood hedges at this house and I am hand pruning all the Dwarf English type. The other I am loose shearing and then touching up with the hand pruners. I call it a hybrid technique where I get all the really shaggy growth with the gas powered shears. They are probably the most misused tool I have ever seen. Plants and gardens have never been the same since they were invented.Funny thing about this garden was I visited it in early March to make an estimate and didn’t get a warm feeling from it at all. I feel like normally I can evaluate a garden and see it good points even in the dead of winter but this place had me totally fooled. When I walked out behind the house yesterday my breath was literally t

    ABC Wednesday – Magnolia
    2008-04-16 05:04:30
ABC Wednesday – MagnoliaIf you are here for Wordless Wednesday please scroll down to the next post. Thanks for stopping by.With perfect timing the Magnolia flower arrived this week just in time for an ‘M’ post. This first picture is a yellow form (which you don’t see that often) called ‘Butterflies’. I actually took this picture at the local wholesale nursery because the ‘Butterflies’ I have been growing for the last 20 years has never flowered. It is in too much shade and is probably too big to move now because of its location. I still hope to see a flower on it someday. These other two photos were a something I have been experimenting with lately. Trying to get one flower in focus with a blurred background of many of the same flower. The first one is actually a double ‘M’ since it is a ‘Merrill’ Magnolia. You can see the difference of the two photos as the first one was shot on a cloudy, flat, grey day and the second was a sunny clear day.The second photo is a

    2008-03-11 05:29:52
All in the wild March-morning I heard the angels call; It was when the moon was setting, and the dark was over all; The trees began to whisper, and the wind began to roll, And in the wildMarch-morning I heard them call my soul.Lord Alfred Tennyson The May Queen

    Magnolia ‘Porcelain Dove’
    2007-07-03 11:40:00
Magnolia ‘Porcelain Dove’This picture was taken in Greenwich at a private garden I visited a few weeks ago. It has a great collection of plants and a lot of tropicals. Here is a blurb I found on the net about ‘Porcelain Dove’:magnoliasociety.org“[M. globosa, M. virginiana var. australis], cv. (Callaway, Dorothy J. The World of Magnolias, p. 225, 1994). ‘This hybrid was created by the late D. Todd Gresham in 1965 at his home, Hill of Doves, in Santa Cruz, California. ... ‘Procelain Dove’ was selected and named by Tom and Bill Dodd from hybrids Gresham shipped to their nursery in Semmes, Alabama. The leaves are much like those of M. virginiana and are semievergreen (Gresham must have used M. virginiana var. australis in his cross, although he did not list it as such). The flowers also resemble those of M. virginiana but are larger and quite fragrant. This hybrid received its name for its porcelain-white flower color and in honor of Todd Gresham's home, Hill of Doves. Nam

CD Review: Western Civ - Remington Steel Magnolia
    2007-07-02 17:09:00
CD Review:   Artist: Western CivTitle: Remington Steel MagnoliaWebsite: http://www.westerncivrock.comStyle: RockRating: 7.90 out of 10By Senior Staff Writer C.W. Ross   Western Civ is a fairly new band, having played their first live show in November of 2005. The band is made up of a group of 30-something guys, who I'm guessing have a quirky side to them after listening to their new release Remington Steel Magnolia. The songs found on it sound familiar but have little quirks and nuances that send them in an all-new direction than what you're probably used to hearing. Don't get me wrong: this isn't an experimental release. It has a rock sound with the little extras added in to spice thing up. While at first listen these might sound like hastily put together songs, upon further listening, you'll find that each of those little nuances have been thought out and placed there for a reason. The band blends Indie and modern rock with some

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens - Charleston, SC
    2007-05-05 16:17:00
My Trip to Magnolia Plantation: Last week a good friend of mine had family in town from Virginia.  Among the must see sights in Charleston, Magnolia Plantation was on the agenda.  I, being a resident of Charleston, had never been to "one of the Top 25 Most Visited Houses in America" before and I jumped at the chance to accompany them. We arrived on a beautiful morning to a friendly staff and reasonable admission rates.  Parking was free and not terribly difficult.  The 3 guided tour options were Nature Boat Ride, Magnolia Plantation House and Nature Train.  We opted for the first two and skipped the train to take a walk in The Audubon Swamp Garden.  The Boat tour was very comfortable.  The open pontoon boat glided along the canals and we were given a concise but not riveting description of the history of the 150 acre rice field.  During the hour long tour we saw many different species of birds and a few alligators!  It was very en

    Multi-season Magnolia
    2006-12-28 07:00:00
Kinston The stately Southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) is native along the Coastal Plain but is widely planted throughout the southeast because of its ornamental value. The magnolia is valued as a shade tree with its showy, fragrant saucer-shaped flowers and large evergreen leaves. Geologists report that magnolia trees were growing on this earth when the dinosaurs roamed around.Studies reveal that the flowers are a very primitive type with spirally arranged floral parts. Linneus named this tree in honor of Pierre Magnol who was a physician, professor of botany and director of a botanical garden...
