| Google Results Malware Free? | | 2007-11-30 11:06:00 | | Google has taken steps to remove malware websites from its search results, according to a ComputerWorld article released Wednesday. Alex Eckelberry, CEO of Sunbelt Software Distribution Inc released the news Monday that Google had removed more than 40,000 malware sites from its search results. While Google refused to either confirm or deny this, spot checks by Sunbelt researcher Adam Thomas did not turn up any malware sites. While Google would not confirm the purge, or even if the sites existed in the index in the first place, a Google spokeswoman said in an email: "In our search results, we try to warn users of potentially dangerous sites when we know of them. Sites that clearly exploit browser security holes to install software, such as malware, spyware, viruses, adware and Trojan horses, are in violation of the Google quality guidelines and may be removed from Google's index." A combination of "malicious" and "software", malware is used to install unwanted software the may cause damage or unwanted behavior on the infected computer. Even if these malware sites have been removed from the search index, hackers tend to find ways to get their malware back in the path of internet users one way or another. Keeping your operating system and virus protection software up to date can help reduce the risk of becoming infected, but following a few simple tips is also recommended: - Avoid file sharing applications. - Never open an email attachment unless you are certain you know what it is. - Avoid free software downloads unless they are from a trusted source.

| Malware FAQ | | 2007-11-14 12:08:00 | | Q: What are malware, viruses, spyware, and cookies, and what differentiates them?A: Let us take the easy one first. "Malware" is short for malicious software and is typically used as a catch-all term to refer to any software designed to cause damage to a single computer, server, or computer network, whether it's a virus, spyware, et al.Q. What exactly is a virus? Is a "worm" also a virus?Viruses are computer programs or scripts that attempt to spread from one file to another on a single computer and/or from one computer to another, using a variety of methods, without the knowledge and consent of the computer user. A worm is a specific type of virus that propagates itself across many computers, usually by creating copies of itself in each computer’s memory. Many users define viruses simply as trick programs designed to delete or move hard drive data, which, strictly speaking, is not correct. From a technical viewpoint, what makes a virus a virus is that it spreads itself. The damage i | | By: FAQ Guru | | |

| Malware Attack Plan | | 2007-05-12 16:29:00 | | Now here is confirmation of what I said about Malware in my previous post. Google found that one out of 10 web pages scrutinized by them, contained malicious code that could infect a user's PC . This was based on the survey of billions of sites and in-depth analysis 4.5 million web pages. Theses so called phantom sites are empty shell, booby-trapped websites that download and automatically install Malware, to infect a computer or steal sensitive information in what is called “Drive-by” downloads. The vast majority exploit vulnerabilities in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser to install themselves. Google also found that the code was often contained in those parts of the website not designed or controlled by the website owner, such as banner adverts and widgets.Widgets are small programs that may, for example, display a calendar on a web page or a web traffic counter. These are often downloaded from third-party sites. The rise of web 2.0 and user-generated content gave criminals | | By: Science & Technology Today | | |

| Google Sharpens Malware Alerts for Webmasters | | 2007-03-01 03:12:00 | | Google Inc. has enhanced the way it notifies webmasters that their sites contain malware, improving on a service the Mountain View, California, company launched in November of last year in a partnership with The Stop Badware Coalition.Google has begun providing more detailed alerts and to send these notifications via e-mail to webmasters, according to a posting Monday on an official Google blog.Previously, Google only informed webmasters that their sites had been identified as having malware and made generic suggestions for fixing the problem. Now, the company also points webmasters to specific offending pages from their sites that Google has determined contain malicious components."This can be helpful when the malicious content is hard to find," the posting reads. "By providing example URLs, webmasters are one step closer to diagnosing the problem and ultimately re-securing their sites."Before, Google notified webmasters by placing a note in the site's summary page in Google's Webmaster Tools site, but now it is sending the alert via e-mail as well.Google flags Web sites according to guidelines set by The Stop Badware Coalition. Webmasters who feel their sites have been incorrectly flagged as having malware need to contact the coalition and request a review. In August, and also in conjunction with The Stop Badware Coalition, Google started displaying malware alerts for users of its search engine. When users attempt to click over to a Web site considered to be potentially dangerous, Google shows an alert page that informs them of the possible risk and gives them the option to click back to the results page or continue on to the questionable Web site. However, these alerts sometimes anger webmasters who are convinced their sites don't contain malware. The Stop Badware Coalition is a nonprofit organization led by Harvard University and the University of Oxford and backed by Google, Lenovo Group Ltd. and Sun Microsystems Inc.A study published in May of last year by sec | | By: Google Vs Yahoo | | |
