| SAFRA Singapore Bay Run & Army Half Marathon 2008 | | 2008-08-24 23:02:51 | | 24 August 2008It has been 2 years since I last ran the Army Half Marathon, previously also known as Sheares Bridge Run. This year, I registered for the 21km competitve run with my Brother and Jian Hao.I had not been running for months and I'm certain that this half marathon would be a tough one for me to complete. Nevertheless, at 5.30am, we reached the start point. As it was raining the previous day, the Padang field was extremely muddy. The slight drizzle at 5.45am caused some of us to worry. But the worry dissipated when at 6.30 am, Chief of Army flagged off the race. What made me enjoy the AHM 2 years ago was the experience of running on the road (specially cordoned off for the event), the cool morning breeze, and sightseeing. After a trip to the toilet at the 2km mark, I lost Jian Hao and my Brother. Starting off the race at too fast a pace, I was already panting then. Jogging upslope at the East Coast Parkway (ECP) eventually tire me off.Throughout the race, I was jogging and brisk | | By: My Encounters, My Life | | |
| | | I had "movie marathon" | | 2008-08-18 12:22:13 | | Last Friday, I went out and head to the mall. This time, I am looking for some videos that I want to watch. I was so lucky because I found the movie I am looking for but I am disappointed on the other hand. This is because the movie that I really like was sold out and that is "Interview with the Vampire". I bought 4 movies entitled "I am Sam, Serendipity, Omen and What dreams may Come". I watch them the whole day. On that 4 movies I have teary eyed on "I am Sam". I like the movie very much and I | | By: Kiss and Tell | | |

| on a SOTSE marathon. | | 2008-07-08 13:25:41 | | after sleeping pretty much most of the day monday, I woke up tuesday morning slamming away at the keyboard of my computer. I was playing my new computer game with an intensity that one normally reserves for the bedroom. instead of an occasional Oooohhhhh. and an Aaahhhhhh. I was cursing loudly at all the evil villains who were daring to intrude on my territory. TAKE that! you bastard. this went on for about 8 hours - straight. if I were still a kid, my mother would have given me a big scolding, but alas, those days are long gone. (..to you kids out there, EAT YOUR HEART OUT!!!)anyway, I would have probably continued playing ALL day except for a couple of phone calls that I received that interrupted my game.first, it was da brain touching bases with me. he was in pattaya playing golf with someone. returning tomorrow. the time was about 5pm. | | Not my last Bon Jovi karaoke marathon | | 2008-04-27 07:57:00 | | Today I attended what I thought was going to be my last Bon Jovi karaoke marathon. But not soon after we started singing I realized I could never give it up and decided I will travel all the way from Osaka to Komaki to be part of it again. Today we used the Joysound karaoke machine again, which means ‘only’ 66 different Bon Jovi songs, but four of them are live versions where the band actually appears on the big screen and you get to sing along with Jon. We sang all 66 from A to Z with a break somewhere in the middle to eat lunch/dinner. After that we sang all live versions again, or rather we all stared at the TV and just seriously enjoyed watching Bon Jovi perform four songs. After that we did something very uncharacteristically: we stopped singing. It didn’t happen intentionally though, we just got caught up in conversation and before we knew it our time in the karaoke room was up. It was another great marathon and I seriously can’t wait for the next one!The list of Bon Jovi | | By: The Loulogue | | |
| | Kitchen Marathon: Old Wood Floor Repair, Edge Sanding, New Window Moldings and Misc | | 2008-04-21 14:52:00 | | We put in a full work day on Saturday. A start right after breakfast and keep going without a significant break till sunset kind of day, which I haven't done for a long time. I can still feel it in my legs, all the kneeling from edge sanding the old wood floor. Peter on the other hand enjoyed a healthy workout going up and down the stairs leading into the basement workshop a zillion times, cutting wood pieces to repair the kitchen floor as well as fitting new moldings for the two windows above the sink. We did get to soak in the last evening sun rays over a Bass Ale and mixed nuts though, initiating the porch for the season. Here are the pictures:The black vent covers had to go since additional baseboard heaters are planned to run along the wall. This is where the wall was, and the repair here is temporary. We still have to figure out how we are going to bring the two different wood floors together. And brand new moldings for these windows. | | By: Dutch Colonial Home | | |

| | A Boston Marathon, One Week Early | | 2008-04-14 12:31:00 | | It was a nine-inning, four hour marathon at Fenway Park last night, as the Red Sox won 8-5, in one of those games that was just torture to watch. I got to Thom's to watch it with the score at 3-1 in the third. (I played softball last night, and drove in the winning run in the final inning.)The Red Sox pounded Phil Hughes for six runs in three innings, and took a 7-1 lead. But Daisuke Matsuzaka seemed determined to give it back, as he slogged through 5 innings, walking six and allowing four runs. The bullpen did a decent job, but Mike Timlin got torched by Jason Giambi again, as The Giambalco took him deep into the bullpen for the second time in three nights. Timlin left the game without retiring a batter.Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon were not available, after the heavy workload they had this weekend. So Javier Lopez and Manny Delcarmen stepped up, with MDC getting the final two outs as the Red Sox got the victory. It was also a night that David Ortiz got the night off, with Manny | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |

| | Another Marathon and Another Win | | 2008-04-10 00:45:41 | | Game Eight - Cubs 6 Pirates 4 - 15 innings
WP - Kevin Hart (2-0) LP - Phil Dumatrait (0-1) Save - Sean Marshall (1)
For the second time in as many games, Lou Piniella's crew beat the Pirates in extra innings. Ronny Cedeno scored the Cubs first run of the game in the 3rd inning on a RBI single by Reed Johnson but the offense was unable to tack on to the lead against Zach Duke. The Cubs scored an unearned run in the 8th and Ryan Dempster turned the game over to the bullpen with a 2-0 lead.
Ryan Dempster threw 7 innings of 1-hit shutout ball on Wednesday night. Dempster was very sharp. He walked only 2 batters, struck out 5 and worked ahead in the count most of the game. Carlos Marmol gave up a run in the 8th and if not for a game changing defensive play from Derrek Lee....it might have been more. Kerry Wood blew his first save opportunity of the year. Wood served up a leadoff home run to Jason Bay in the bottom of the 9th that tied the game.

| | Marathon des Sables: 27 March to 7 April 2008 | | 2008-03-26 11:29:00 | | The Toughest Footrace on Earth Welcome to the world of lunatics and masochists - don't take offence, I have great admiration for all those who even think about doing this event. Why this IS the toughest footrace on Earth It covers 243km/151 miles (in sections similar to 25, 34, 38, 82, 42, 22 km) run over 6 days (7 for some) - equivalent to 5 1/2 regular marathons. That's a speed of between 3 and 14 km an hour for competitors aged between 16 and 78). In addition to that, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint. You will have to prepare all your own food throughout the race and I warn you that there is not a chain of Tesco stores or corner grocery shops dotted around the Sahara. You will experience mid-day temperatures of up to 120°F, of running or walking on uneven rocky, stony ground as well as 15 - 20% o | | By: THE VIEW FROM FEZ | | |

| | The Marathon is Almost Over | | 2008-03-23 11:03:19 | | Wow. Yesterday was quite a day. Kyle's girlfriend was here from about 1:00 to about 9 p.m. We really like her -- she's personable, friendly, and gives Kyle a hassle, so we like that. Bart made banana bread and monster cookies in the morning, homemade pizza for lunch, and delicious pasta (Hay and Straw) for supper. In the midst of that, I finished purchasing, washed, and ironed 7 of the boys shirts, found dress pants and matching ties. Since Tony and Dominyk were toddlers, our boys have always worn ties and white shirts for Easter, except Kyle who always manages to skirt that in some way to prove that he is a non-conformist. At least this year he did bring dress clothes -- the last couple years he forgot and wore holy jeans and a t-shirt.During lunch I made the mistake of asking Kyle and his girlfriend if they were interested in participating in our strange version of an Easter egg hunt. They respectfully declined, but then both Tony and Dominyk got it in their heads that they w | | By: Never a Dull Moment | | |
| | Bon Jovi karaoke marathon # 2 | | 2008-03-23 09:59:00 | | Today it was time for Bon Jovi karaoke marathon number 2! Which means 9 hours of interrupted singing of Bon Jovi songs in a karaoke room at Shidax Komaki, with several other Bon Jovi freaks, for a very low price as it’s all free time karaoke! This time Kumiko and I were joined by Kyoko, who was also their for karaoke marathon number 1, and a new participant named Aki, unfortunately Yuko couldn’t make it this time.Aki, Kyoko, Lou and Kumiko's winkingLast time, we sang all 66 Bon Jovi songs (and 22 more) on the Joy Sound karaoke machine. This time our goal was all 126 songs (including Jon Bon Jovi’s solo work) on the UGA karaoke machine. UGA has many more Bon Jovi songs than Joy Sound but we prefer Joy Sound nonetheless, because it has a few live versions, meaning Bon Jovi actually appears on the screen to sing with you and the sound of the karaoke music and the lyrics are way better. The UGA machine sometimes even seemed to make up whole chapters of lyrics all by itself, without J | | By: The Loulogue | | |

She was warned so many times and now she has to suffer the consequences of her actions. She is trying hard to manipulate the system and it isn't working for her. The conversation ended with her telling me she wasn't going to do something I suggested she should, and it is apparent that nobody has cured her rebellious streak. Not that I expected it to be cured, but she is slipping back into old habits. She is caught in a corner and she never likes that position. Then Jimmy came home defiant and crabby. In an FDNY cap and purple tank top, Katie Holmes could pass for almost any other NYC marathoner yesterday. But of course, no one else had Tom Cruise waiting at the finish line to give them a congratulatory kiss. Katie finished the 26.2 miles with a final time of 5: | | By: Celeb chitchat | | |

| | Marathon NIghts of Homework | | 2007-10-10 04:18:42 | | Salinda, to her credit, is very motivated to catch up with all the school she has missed. Tonight it involved 3 hours of my time. Then I "helped" Sadie on an assignment that, if she would have been cooperative, would have taken 3 minutes. But instead, took over an hour. I don't know what the deal is with that lately....So, tonight has been a marathon night of homework. And I'm tired. But I've enjoyed my time with a very cooperative Salinda. And hopefully this pattern will continue.Bart has been gone all evening at the laundromat dealing with the never ending saga of the washing machine.... and his day was spent with more insurance claims (they are considering the car Mike stole "totalled") and fraud claims (the used credit card).Tomorrow we have so many appointments that we're both going to be tied up.But I'd rather be very busy and not having the stress of last week than bored with it... | | By: Never a Dull Moment | | |
| | Marathon Runners Dinner | | 2007-09-29 17:21:00 | | Today is going to be a long run for my friends and I at Team in Training so I decided to make a nice, carbohydrate-heavy dinner for us last night. Hilary, Nicole, and Tracy and I have been running together for months now and I promised them a fabulous dinner. The first three dishes were:Spicy BBQ Chicken: I used only chicken legs since I'm a big fan of dark meat and I started them off on the grill but finished them in the oven. I also grilled some pineapple to serve with it.Purple Apple Slaw: One of my favorite recipes to serve to guests. It's just a gorgeous color and always a hit!Absolute Mexican Cornbread: This time, I only used Cheddar since I didn't have Monterey Jack but I prefer the recipe as is.Then, for the last two, I didn't use a recipe (sorry...) so I'll give a description.Curried Potatoes: Potatoes are boiled till tender and cut into large dice. They are sauteed with some minced onion, cumin, tumeric, and curry powder. Season, then top with fresh cilantro.Asian Broccoli Pasta Salad: This pasta salad is basically pasta, blanched broccoli, and shredded cucumber sprinkled with sesame seeds, chopped cilantro, and chopped scallions. The dressing is soy sauce, sugar, rice vinegar, olive oil, sesame oil and ground ginger. It was a really enjoyable meal. And to drink we enjoyed cocktails of Looza and Seltzer (soda water) -- no alcohol before a run.For more great pictures, check out the Flickr set. | | By: FoodMayhem | | |
| | Crohn's Disease Half Marathon Team Challenge Update | | 2007-09-11 05:21:00 | | Although the CCFA website invited me to sign up and implied there would be a Central Florida group there doesn't seem to be. I was excited to sign up for this half-marathon, and asked for more info over a week ago. Today I got an email informing me of meetings in Boca and Miami...nothing in Central Florida. In fact, no one ever got back to me. Anyways, unless someone local wants to train and contacts me in the next couple of days....I think I am out.UPDATE (9/11/07) - I got a phone call at work today while I was finishing up a meeting, regarding online training and interest in the Orlando area. The woman from CCFA was VERY cordial and informed me of some virtual training opportunities. That is how I trained for my marathon, so I am intrigued I did not get a chance to read it or attend the online session tonight, but I understand there is another on Thursday. Time is short though... | | By: Living with Crohn's Disease | | |
| | | | Will Padres win the marathon? | | 2007-07-13 18:36:00 | | Can the Padres continue to out-pitch everybody else in baseball?Do they have the capability to start scoring runs more than once in a blue moon? Will the additions of Michael Barrett and Milton Bradley mean anything to their offense?Does Bud Black have it in him to continue being a master in utilizing his bullpen? These questions, and more, begin to unfold when the Padres return from the All-Star break tonight with a three-game series at Arizona. This may be a perfect time to catch the Diamondbacks. They are reeling from five straight losses, including three against lowly Cincinnati. The Padres’ other main competitor in the NL West, the Dodgers, are making a pitch for anybody to become a starter on the mound.Three of their top five starters are shelved with injuries: Jason Schmidt, Randy Wolf and Hong-Chih Kuo.Maybe the Padres can distance themselves from the NL West for the time being. But no matter what happens right after the All-Star break, remember there is still a long way to go.Th | | By: San Diego Sporting | | |
Insomma, na roba tutta all'insegna dell'ecologia! Bravi! | | By: Il blog di Peo | | |

This car broke the all-time Shell efficiency record by traveling 3,039km using only one liter of fuel.

| | Doctor Amanda runs Marathon for Rwanda in memory of murdered friend | | 2007-03-25 09:33:00 | | Amanda Liddle (r) with Charlotte Wilson (l)In December 2000, Charlotte Wilson, a British volunteer teacher, was murdered by extremist rebels in war-torn Burundi. Now her friend Dr. Amanda Liddle, a medical researcher and trustee of the memorial fund set up in Charlotte’s name, plans to run the 2007 Flora London Marathon to raise money for the Rwandan school where she had been working. The Charlotte Wilson Memorial Fund (http://www.cwmf.org.uk/ - registered charity 1091955) has raised more than £20,000 since it was established in 2001. As well as supporting impoverished students at Shyogwe school, in Rwanda, it has funded a series of HIV awareness projects, helped rehabilitate Rwandan street children, and supported vital peacebuilding work in Burundi.Amanda Liddle says:“I am proud to be running the marathon for the CWMF, in memory of my great friend Charlotte. I have never done anything like this before, so it truly is a challenge, but running for a charity I really believe in makes it all worthwhile. Charlotte had planned to support education and HIV awareness projects on her return to the UK, but didn't have the opportunity to do so herself. Through CWMF, I hope we will be able to help build a more hopeful future for Rwanda”.Margot Wilson, Charlotte’s mother, and chair of the Charlotte Wilson Memorial Fund says:“We are delighted and touched that Amanda has decided to support CWMF in this way. After serving on our board of trustees for four years, she will soon become our first ever marathon runner. It costs just £150 a year to put a Rwandan child through secondary school, so every pound Amanda raises will make a huge difference.”Notes to editors:1.
