| Game Thread; Astros at Cubs, 2:20 p.m. EDT/1:20 CT: Marquis is pitching? Crap. | | 2008-08-06 11:28:44 | |
I'm a people person!!
The Cubs have won eight out of their last nine non-rain shortened games. The one loser has been, of course, Jason Marquis. Even though he gave a quality start, it was the max you could do. Marquis is now 0-4 in his last six starts, and hasn't recorded a win since mid-June. It's now August, if you're wondering.
Now, I'm not saying Jason Marquis is a bad pitcher. Wait. Yes I am. He's bad. Smoke and mirrors. I truly believe the only reason Jason Marquis is on the roster is for luck purposes. Since Marquis has started his major league career, every team he's been on has made it to the postseason. Look it up. When you haven't won a World Series in a century, I guess you'll try anything.
I mean, come on. Zambrano, Lilly, Harden, Dempster...and Marquis. He's like the fifth Beatle. Or the fifth Monkee. Or the fifth Door. Those guys rocked it out with four members. Maybe the Cubs should as well. This is no great quintet. The good news for the Cubs is that there i... | | By: A League of Her Own
| | A Marquis Homecoming | | 2008-06-14 16:26:52 | | Game Sixty-Nine - Cubs 6 Blue Jays 2
WP - Jason Marquis (5-3) LP - Roy Halladay (8-6) Save - None
This is why they play the games. On paper Saturday's pitching match-up looked very lopsided. A former Cy Young Award winner and one of the best in his league against a pitcher that has never performed to his potential consistently throughout his career. Throw in the fact the Cubs' offense had not been scoring runs in bunches and it figured to be a long afternoon for Lou Piniella's crew. But then the ump yelled....PLAY BALL!!!
Jason Marquis was outstanding. He picked up his third win in a row and not only equaled his performance against the Dodgers but surpassed it. Marquis threw 7 innings of shutout ball and did not allow his first hit until the 5th. Marquis retired 9 in a row at one point and faced just 2 over the minimum through the first 7 innings. Marquis left in the 8th after loading the bases on 3 straight singles. Marquis ended up allowing 1 run on 4 hits in 7+ innings with 2 walk... | | By: Chicago Cubs Online
| | A Marquis Performance | | 2008-06-09 00:18:07 | | Game Sixty-Four - Cubs 3 Dodgers 1
WP - Jason Marquis (4-3) LP - Brad Penny (5-8) Save - Kerry Wood (18)
The Chicago Cubs are once again tops in the majors with a 40-24 record following the best outing of the season by Jason Marquis. Marquis turned in a gem and allowed only 1 unearned run on 3 hits in 6 1/3 innings. The big difference in Marquis' performance was he threw strikes early in the count with very good command. Marquis walked only 1 batter, the last one he faced, before turning the game over to Carlos Marmol and Kerry Wood.
Carlos Marmol replaced Marquis with two on and 1 out in the 7th with the Cubs up 3-1. Marmol struck out Matt Kemp and Derrek Lee turned in a Gold Glove caliber play to save at least 1 run and end the inning. Lee made a diving stop on a ball hit in the hole by Blake DeWitt and threw a strike to Marmol from his knees for the third out. Marmol worked in and out of trouble in the 8th and retired Jeff Kent on a grounder to 3rd after a 2-out double by Juan Pie... | | By: Chicago Cubs Online

| Marquis Philips Shiraz | | 2008-05-16 09:38:00 | | 2005South Eastern AustraliaWill drink again.I loved this wine - had a very McLaren Vale Shiraz taste to it (which means I really, really liked it). I get excited when I taste a wine that reminds me of a particular region. For Shiraz's, I love the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. This had a distinct flavour to it - slightly smokey, tobacco cherry flavor. It was a drink alone wine. I can't remember at this point what I had for food with it - but it doesn't matter as I remember it took some of the flavour away. But it was good again later on its own - too good. I had too much. I did end up with a nasty headache the following day (which is when I paid attention to the alcohol content). I would not let this deter you from trying this wine - I had far too little to eat the entire day and then too much wine that night.I don't suppose you'd give it a shotKnowing all that you've gotAre cigarettes and red vinesJust close your eyes, cause, baby--You never do knowAnd I'll be on the sidelines,With ... | | By: What To Drink Tonight | | |
| | A Sloppy Outing for Marquis | | 2008-05-13 23:14:01 | | Game Thirty-Nine - Cubs 3 Padres 4
WP - Shawn Estes (1-0) LP - Jason Marquis (1-3) Save - Trevor Hoffman (7)
Lou Piniella's crew lost a game they should have won on a rainy night at the old ballpark. Shawn Estes shutdown the Cubs offense and picked up his 100th career win. Alfonso Soriano led off the bottom of the 1st with his 5th home run of the season, and second in as many days. The Cubs tacked on a pair in the 2nd off a Reed Johnson double but Jason Marquis once again struggled with his command and lost his third game of the season.
Jason Marquis gave up all 4 of the Padres runs in the 4th inning. The big hit was a 3-run homer by Kahlil Greene. Marquis gave up a 2-out single to Shawn Estes and after a wild pitch put the go ahead run in scoring position, Estes scored the winning run on a double to right center by another former Cub, Jody Gerut.
Lou Piniella said after the game when asked about Marquis' performance, "One bad inning. I have no idea, they are all about the same. One... | | By: Chicago Cubs Online
| | Jason Marquis Has A Family To Think About | | 2008-03-01 18:08:18 | | Reader Crunch beat me to this by a couple minutes in the Comments, but Paul Sullivan of the Tribune writes that after making his Spring Training debut Saturday in a 6-2 Cubs loss to the Angels (2 runs, 3 hits allowed in 2 IP), Jason Marquis let it be known that he wants to [...]... | | By: The Cub Reporter | | |

| Lou Tells Marquis Where To Go | | 2008-03-01 18:03:46 | |
You wanna leave, Markum? Then get your home-run-giving-up ass out of here!
So I was in the middle of trying to figure out what I could say in a recap of this boring-ass game today, when OGDJM! came through for me like a champ.
OGDJM started the smackdown:
"I love Chicago," Marquis said. "I definitely want to stay here. This is the place I want to be. I signed here for a reason. But I also signed as a starter, and I think that's where I help the team the most. Obviously we'll see what happens when it's time for [the Cubs] to make their decision.
"So as much as I want to be here in Chicago -- I love it, I love the fans, I love the stadium -- I also have a family to worry about, too. I think I can take my services elsewhere if that's the case and I can help another team, in that capacity as a starter.
"So, my value doesn't lie in the bullpen in my mind."
Actually, it doesn't lie on the mound at all, ass-clown. Are you aware that your signing made us the laughing stock of baseball ... | | By: A League of Her Own
| | | | The Marquis de Shutout | | 2007-05-10 08:11:06 | | (Yeah I got a million of those for the rest of the year for Marquis)
If you’re a fan of the pitching duel, last night’s game may well have been the highlight of the season. If Chicago-native Tom Gorzelanny could have a mulligan after the leadoff home run to Soriano, we could have been looking at another 15 inning affair. The good news this time would have been that our bullpen would have been plenty rested as Marquis cruised through 9 innings and 30 batters including the first five innings of perfection. All this on a 109 pitches, 72 of which were strikes, in other words about 5 innings for Zambrano.
