Bad credit mars Wall St bankers' summer break
    2008-07-09 11:44:00
WASHINGTON - JULY is usually a quieter month for busy Wall Street bankers, spent lounging poolside at the Hamptons or on a Caribbean beach, but a nagging credit crunch has cast a dark cloud over such vacations.Major US banks, including Citigroup, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Merrill Lynch, are due to unveil their second quarter earnings in coming weeks, and analysts say some results will not be pretty.America's finance houses are weathering one of the worst market downturns in decades as a two-year long housing market slump and a credit squeeze, which erupted last summer, continue to roil balance sheets. Some bankers believed at the start of the year that Wall Street would ride out the credit storm by the summer, but such predictions have proved premature.Lehman Brothers announced a net loss of US$2.8 billion (S$3.81 billion) for its fiscal second quarter on June 16, and America's seventh largest savings and loan bank, IndyMac Bancorp, said on Monday it was struggling to raise fr

Buzz Aldrin, NASA, Mars & Our Future

INVEST IN NASABuzz Aldrin is right.  If we don't invest in NASA, the Chinese are going to beat us to the Moon and to Mars.  Space is our future.  As usual, we are piddling it away, to pinch pennies.  I am terrified if Barack Obama is elected it is going to be more of the same - just dump the space program and put everything in welfare programs. The UK Telegraph"... Mr Aldrin revealed that he intends to lobby Barack Obama and John McCain, the two US presidential candidates, in an effort to ensure they find sufficient funds ...

Mars Soil Fit for Life, Tests Confirm
    2008-06-27 15:33:02
Hi guys, good news from Mars that the Phoenix lander's first taste test of soil near Mars' north pole reveals a briny environment similar to what can be found in backyards on Earth, scientists said Thursday. The finding raises hope that the Martian arctic plains could have conditions favorable for primitive life. Phoenix landed a month ago to study the habitability of Mars' northern latitudes. The latest experiment was designed to test for minerals that do not have carbon in them. Earlier this week, Phoenix's 8-foot-long robotic arm delivered a pinch of dirt to its onboard lab.Like a chemist, the spacecraft mixed the soil with water brought from Earth into a beaker the size of a teacup and stirred it. Sensors inside the beaker detect the soil's pH and probe for traces of the nutrients.Preliminary results showed the soil had a pH between 8 and 9, researchers said. A pH less than 7 means the solution is acidic, while a pH over 7 means it is salty. Phoenix also detected the presence of m

Finally Phoenix lander confirms presence of ice on Mars
    2008-06-22 04:29:40
Hi guys, Phoenix Mars lander confirmed their long-held belief that ice is hiding under the surface in the Red Planet's northern region. The lander's robotic arm started digging trenches into Martian soil after touching down near the planet's north pole on May 25, revealing a white substance that scientists had said could be either salt or ice. Phoenix flexed its arm again to enlarge a trench on June 15. It then took pictures of eight bright bits of material the size of dice inside the hole, which scientists dubbed "Dodo-Goldilocks." When the lander took new photographs of the trench four days later on Thursday, the material had vanished, settling the debate about whether it was salt or ice. Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California concluded that the material was frozen water that evaporated when exposed to the sun. Salt would not have reacted that way, scientists said "We have dug a trench and uncovered a hard layer

    Ice on Mars?
    2008-06-20 15:59:00
It's been all over the net. Nature has an article about it here. I'm skeptical, only because I don't know what to make of this. Is it possible? Yes, of course, and I really hope it's true, but at the same time I don't want to get my hopes up. A lot of things have been said about Mars that have put a dampener on my hopes (such as the discovery that Mars' oceans were likely too salty for life). So, I am reluctant to jump up and down and scream, "Victory!"What do you think?(Don't click the read more, there isn't any more after this!)

Atlast an Alien found on Mars
    2008-06-05 23:21:37
If you look closely at this image, you should be able to see what I see. It looks like a four legged animal somewhat camouflaged into the mars scenery. I’m almost certain that my eyes are not fooling me on this one, I see a four legged, maybe furry? animal standing right above the ledge of the small hill. You can also see tracks from the rover, and it looks like it must have passed right by the animal. So the creature/creatures (If there’s one then there must be more) seem to be very good at blending in with their surroundings. I’m sure this will be mainstream news as soon as people catch on to the photo. So, click on the image to the left to see the creature for yourself. Of course my words aren’t going to influence you more than what you can see with your own two eyes. I didn’t circle the creature or add anything to the picture because that would be a reason to believe I tampered with the picture.

After the success of "Pedro Penduko" and "Pedro Penduko at mga Engkantao", both of which I did not watch, Komiks comes up with a "Superman Rip-off" fantaserye in the form of Mars Ravelo's "Kapitan Boom", a story about a clumsy superhero who tries hard to juggle crime-fighting and the personal life of his alter-ego. Sounds familiar?Modified from here:Kapitan Boom was born when a young Lance (Jay-R Siaboc) accidentally hits his father's transmitter, leading to an explosion where he unexpectedly acquires his superpowers. It was only when he became an adult that he was able to fully use his skills through his superhero persona, Kapitan Boom (Jon Avila). Something to watch for in the series is the complicated yet hilarious interaction between Lance, Lance's love interest Melody (Maja Salvador), Melody's best friend Cheska (Mariana del Rio), Lance's best friend Bukol (Thou Reyes), and Kapitan Boom.Jay-R Siaboc of Pinoy Dream Academy fame once again shines in his "probinsyano" (from the prov

    Mars Generation Max
    2008-04-08 21:17:00
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation has come up with guidelines for foods sold in schools. In response, Mars has produced a line of Generation Max bars and snacks to put in vending machines, where their regular candy bars will no longer be sold. We tried the Generation Max 3 Musketeers Chocolate Brownie Bar and it was a bit hard to chew. I tried tasting the top and bottom separately and the top is a sticky white substance that tastes mainly like sugar. The bottom has a dull chocolate flavor, possibly some rice krispy-like pieces, and is extremely dense. It is quite amazing that a bar this size (1.26 oz) is only 140 calories but neither of us would ever eat it again.

Can earth lose all electromagnetism in 2012 and lifeless like Mars?
    2008-04-03 00:42:10
According to some scientists, there is a reactor at the very center of the earth. That creates the electromagnetism for the earth. The electromagnetism in turn support life forms. There are evidences that the Mars was timing with life forms. Something weird happened there and the life as we know vanished from the Mars surface. According to some scientists, Mars lost its electromagnetism as its core cooled down. The Mayans and other civilization have warned the world that some cataclysmic will happen between 2012 and 2025. What did they mean? Was it that the earth’s core will cool down like that of Mars? Does that mean earth will be lifeless like Mars? The same scientists that say there is a reactor at the very center of the earth, also say the reactor is running out of Uranium fuel. It is possible that it will run out of fuel between 2012 and 2025source :IndiaDaily
