| Breaking the international silence over the Gatumba massacre | | 2008-08-14 02:10:00 | | Four years ago this week – on Friday 13th, as it happens – more than 150 people, half of them children, were shot, hacked, and burned to death at the Gatumba refugee camp in Burundi. The victims, supposedly under UNHCR protection, were almost all Banyamulenge Congolese Tutsis, singled out by their attackers, who left non-Tutsi refugees in the camp unharmed. Here is Thabo Mbeki's account of what happened: The killers came in the dark of night. They attacked a Burundi army camp located nearby, charged with the responsibility to protect the refugees. Mike Reilly called it a home run, but the other three idiots in blue made him change his call, despite the fact Reilly had the best angle to it. I've always liked the fact that umps get together to get a call right, but this one actually reversed a right call for a bad one. (Bob Davidson, home plate ump, to his credit, actually admitted his screwup after the game.) But the Mets showed real determination and went out and stomped all over the Evil Empire anyway, and swept the two-game series.I have never been a fan of instant replay for baseball, but more and more I am starting to believe that having it for calls like home runs around the foul pole and fan interference might actually be the way to go. Allowing the easy acquisition and possession of military-style weapons like this is foolhardy and the results are tragic. “We need to find out how and where the killer got this gun and this ammunition. We need to stop selling military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips to civilians. The killer knew what he was going to do, and he knew what tools he needed. Our weak gun laws make these killing machines readily available. We can take steps to prevent tragedies like this in the future.” First step? address youth violence or pay dearly later as this CNN news article clearly states so eloquently. Second step? outlaw all guns and only allow less than lethal weapons to be used in America.Third step? work on implementation of all known security systems, including a national ID card for every individual in America.Fourth step? implement the gun data base mental health system link NOW.
