India n its contribution towards Mathematics!
    2008-04-08 02:36:36
The concept of zero also originated in ancient India. It is derived from the concept of a void. The concept of void existed in Hindu Philosophy - hence the derivation of a symbol for it.In India, mathematics has its roots in Vedic literature which is nearly 4000 years old. Between 1000 B.C. and 1000 A.D. various treatises on mathematics were authored by Indian mathematicians in which were set forth for the first time, the concept of zero, the techniques of algebra and algorithm, square root and cube root. A method of graduated calculation was documented in the Pancha-Siddhantika (Five Principles) in the 5th Century. But the technique is said to be dating from Vedic times circa 2000 B.C. The rudiments of Geometry called Rekha-Ganita in ancient India - were formulated and applied in the drafting of Mandalas for architectural purposes. They were also displayed in the geometric patterns used in many temple motifs.(adj fig) The technique of calculation, called algorithm, which

The Promise of Mathematics to Counterterrorism
    2007-12-04 08:50:05
This last week while I was on vacation in California, two articles caught my attention. On the Counterterrorism Blog , Roderick Jones described how virtual worlds are helping Western governments combat terrorism, by offering realistic computer-based simulations to government personnel involved in operational decisionmaking, and as communication platforms. Meanwhile, an article in LifeScience , by Heather Whipps describes the utility of academic mathematics to fighting al Qaida. These articles pick...(read more)

    Life Imitates Mathematics
    2007-08-31 15:11:00
I viewed this program last evening on the Mandelbrot set and was struck by the "common sense" implications a mathematical theorem has on life, social organization, and in general, how all things are created and are "self-organized" from simple beginnings.Which led me to think that if we on Long Island can create the right set of circumstances for positive change, positive change will not only occur but remain "self organized" and "self renewing."Not that we are remotely in the same league as Benoit Mandelbrot but what we are proposing with Long Island 3.o, the Long Island Congress, the Long Island Constitution and Long Island Meta-democracy is similar to this concept."A body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force"If we can construct a set of circumstances on Long Island for positive change, then the positive change should continue unless interrupted by something highly unusual since, if done properly, Long Island 3.o should be pretty well protected from t
