You may opt for a dinner reservation, picnic by the park / pond, set-up by the beach, or do it at home and cook your favorites. Sura: The King's Meal
    2008-03-26 14:01:00
I'm still stuck at home, sick of all the soup places I've ordered from. I'm desperately searching for a new one when Lon tells me there's another Korean place by our apartment, Sura: The King's Meal Sura: The King's Meal. Well, the name certainly set's up expectations and the fact that Chef Suk Yong Chung comes from Hangawi Hangawi. I've never been before but it's a place in K-town so I'm sort of anticipating the delivery of an authentic Korean meal. I ordered the Sundubu Jiggae (spicy tofu stew) and the Kimchee Jigae (pork and kimchee stew), a bit overly zealous for one sick person, but hey I'm suffering. It's 35 minutes later and I'm still waiting for the food that I couldn't pay for by credit card (they have a $20 minimum)...Finally got the food, 44 minutes after the order was placed, and there's soup all over the containers and the utensils. I wipe them quickly and notice that the portions are about half the size of what most places offer. They did give generous portions of the mult

Waffles are Really an Excuse to Eat Dessert as a Meal
    2008-02-24 10:36:00
We had Caroline and Eddie over yesterday to break in our new waffle maker, the Villa Ware 2010 Uno Pro Belgian Gravity Waffler. It heats up quickly and makes good waffles even if you don't follow instructions, Lon! It's also easy to clean, mostly because not much sticks too it. I did spray it with PAM before heating it.We made a standard flavored waffle so that we could go all out on the toppings. We had pure maple syrup, caramel sauce, a powdered sugar shaker, and sweet cream butter on hand. I made a raspberry sauce out of frozen raspberries that I thawed, sweetened, pureed, and strained. Next a Apricot Apple Compote:10 dried tart apricots4 medium apples, peeled and sliced1 tablespoon light brown sugar1/2 teaspoon lemon zest1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon1. Soak the apricots in 1/2 cup of water for 30 minutes.2. Reserve 3 tablespoons of the soaking water and chop the apricots.3. Put apricots, apples, brown sugar, and reserved water in a 3 1/2 Quart pot and heat on medium heat. Stir thoro

How meal composition affects fat loss
    2008-02-09 07:17:00
Insulin and glucagon – the unsuspected keys to successful fat loss Insulin and glucagon play important metabolic roles.Insulin is a storage hormone, promoting the storage of glucose as muscle and liver glycogen and the storage of dietary fat as triglycerides in the adipose tissue.Glucagon is a release hormone. It triggers the release of stored fat and the breakdown of glycogen into glucose.Insulin and glucagon are inversely pared hormones – when one is high the other is low. For this reason storage and release do not occur at the same time. Which process occurs at any given time depends on the insulin to glucagon ratio:insulin levels are higher then glucagon levels => glucose and fatty acid storage occursglucagon levels are higher the insulin levels =>triglyceride release and glycogen breakdown occurs For optimum fat loss glucagon levels must be, most of the time, higher then insulin levels so as to maximize the amount of triglycerides “broken down” and used for energy produc

ramen rating: cup noodles souper meal shrimp
    2008-01-24 11:57:20
Have you read our review of Cup Noodles Souper Meal Beef Minestrone? If you have, there’s not much more to add. Like the Beef Flavor Minestrone version of the Souper Meal, this shrimp (with tomato and garlic flavor) is basically an over-sized Cup Noodles. The big difference between this flavor and the beef flavor is that the soup on the shrimp flavor tastes more like a mild chicken soup than beef stock. There’s the requisite peas, corn, little carrot pieces, and I think I counted 2 miniature shrimp. There’s not much to make this particular flavor stand out from the other Cup Noodles varieties, and there’s disappointingly little shrimp, tomato, nor garlic flavor. It’s Cup Noodles. It’s not bad. It’s not great. It gets a 6. Share This

Vaghareli Khichdi and Gujarati Kadhhi - A Simple and Satisfying Meal
    2008-01-18 13:11:29
As the culinary field transcends across geographical barriers, international cooking has taken a huge leap, and its fascinating to try new dishes that a fusion of tastes, cultures, and origins! But sometimes, getting back to your roots is also a satisfying experience. Comfort food will often be the food you have grown up eating, as it is filled with happy memories, your mom cooking in the kitchen, the whole family sitting and chatting at dinner, and the sense of familiar spices and surroundings....That is precisely what I revisted last night. A simple traditional Gujarati (gujarat is a state in western India) meal, comprising of "Vaghareli Khichdi and Kaddhi" Khichdi is just rice cooked with some spices and optional vegetables, while Kadhhi is like a curry made of buttermilk and besan (chickpea flour) This has been a staple food for a lot of gujaratis, but I am sure you would enjoy this too, irrepective of where you hail from!IngredientsFor Khichdi3 cups moong dal2 cup basmati or plain rice3 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)7-8 whole black pepper-corns1 cup onions - finely chopped1 cup potatoes - finely diced1 cup fresh/frozen green tuvar (lilva)(optional, but you can get it in Indian stores)3 tsp turmeric powder2 green chillies - chopped2 tbsp cumin seeds (jeera)salt - to taste (about 1 1/2-2 tbsp)lemon juice - to taste (about 2 tbsp)For Kadddhi3 cups sour buttermilk1 1/2 cup besan (chickpea flour)2 tbsp gheesalt and lemon juice - to tastejaggery or sugar - to taste (start with less if you like it sour!)2 green chillies - chopped1 tbsp cumin seeds (jeera)2 tsp fenugreek seeds (methi)a pinch of asafoetida (hing)chopped corander for garnish5-6 curry leaves (limdo)Method - KhichdiTake the rice and moong dal and wash them under running water for a couple of times. Veg Pizza on a Pita with Cilantro Hummus - A Quick-Fix Meal
    2008-01-14 13:54:51
It's been raining heavily in California since 2 weeks now, and people are already praying that it stops over the weekend. But frankly, though I detest driving to work in this rain and not having a chance to go out during weekend because it is pouring out there, it is good that we received all this rain because it was badly needed! Now you know what rain does to your tastebuds, right? You are suddenly attacked by a bout of those "Give me something hot and tasty now" food cravings, and that is precisely what we felt 2 days ago. But it was late when we got home from work, and though I wanted something tasty, I was in no mood for an elaborate meal. I saw a packet of pita bread and some hummus in my fridge. So did I make pita?? Nope, I decided to go for the Pizza version of the Pita. I had some Pizza Sauce on hand, and I modified the hummus by adding some cilantro and green chillies to add some kick, then we layered the vegggies, sauce, hummus and cheese on the pita breads and tossed them into the oven for a luscious quick-fix meal!Ingredients3 Pita Breads3 tbsp Pizza Sauce (any brand is fine)3 tbsp regular plain Hummus1/4th cup fresh cilantro4-5 green chillies or jalapenoveggies of your choice (I used onion, capsicum, olives and jalapeno)some corn for toppingshredded mozarella cheeseground black pepperMethodTake the hummus, cilantro and jalapenos and blend them in a mixer to make a smooth paste. That's how you make your Cilantro-Hummus spreadNow mix the cilantro hummus and pizza sauce and layer it evenly on the pita bread. Top it with all vegetables of your choice like onions, capsicum, mushrooms, olives, more jalapenos, tomatoes, and some corn kernels. Finally spread the shressed cheese onto it and bake it in the oven for 15 mins, or until the veggies are cooked and cheese has melted.Enjoy while it's hot! This is a great easy-to-make meal, and also good use for some leftover pita bread! Please visit the actual blogsite at http://funnfud.blogspot.com

Big Family Style Meal at Maple Garden
    2007-12-22 21:19:00
We met up with extended family, visiting for the holidays, for a family style meal in Flushing. My mom chose one of her favorite places, Maple Garden Maple Garden. I can understand why it's one of her favorites after seeing a bill for under $200, that more than satisfied a table of 14 people.I don't know the English name for many of these dishes so I tried to take a lot of pictures to facilitate with descriptions. We started with some cold platters, a traditional way to start a proper Chinese meal. The smoked chicken is one of my dad's favorites. I didn't care for the texture but Lon agreed with my dad.Pig ears is one of my childhood favorites. It's thinly sliced and marinated with fresh garlic and spicy oil. This sounds weird but I love the crunchiness of the cartilage. This dish of tiny dried fish, peanuts, and chilis was delicious. I had to try hard to hold back and pace myself since it was only the beginning of the meal.Yup, broccoli stems actually taste good. They're super cru

Beautiful Minds: a day's meal -Used in the best way
    2007-12-18 04:59:43
Daily on my way to office, I used to find an old man standing in front of a clinic, begging to people for money. This man is around 80-85 years old and wear a broken glass. Last day I dint find him there.. I looked around and found him sitting under a lamp post, and he is looking to the ground. I juz saw that he is sitting coz he is not feeling that well. It was about 9 AM in the morning and I have to rush to my office, to be in Time. I went near him and asked what happened. He just say "nothing" and shook his shoulders. I opened my bag and found that the idli prepared by my mom is their inside the bag, she gave me the same so that i can have it for Noon. I offered him the same, in that tiffin box itself. he was no ready to accept the same. After some time he agreed and had the idlies, and said a thanks, and said, he was in need, but whom to ask? That question suddenly grow inside me.. I thanked to god, for giving me meals when i need, giving me relations when I need. For all the privileges i enjoy. The day was good for me, I din't have anything for the afternoon session, but the satisfaction, that I got from that incident was enough to keep me moving till night.* send in for Bloggers unite --..--..-- This is the blog feed or the RSS feed ...

    An All-Australian Meal.
    2007-12-09 13:16:00
December 10 … The Melbourne Punch gave a menu for an “All Australian Meal” on this day in 1925, by way of some sort of patriotic statement. Every ingredient was sourced from the country, and each choice was justified by the newspaper. All states except Western Australia and the Northern Territory were represented. We would take some issue now with Hunter Valley (N.S.W) red wines being referred to as “Burgundy”, and I cannot see Bêche de Mer Soup becoming frantically popular in the near future, but otherwise the menu holds up pretty well. The end of a meal.
    2007-11-08 14:30:00
November 9 ... Anthony Trollope finished Barchester Towers on this day in 1856. He says in the book that “the end of a novel, like the end of a children's dinner party, must be made up of sweetmeats and sugarplums.” Trollope’s apparent dismissal of sweet things as suitable only for the end of children’s parties is probably as much a comment on his Englishness as anything else. The traditional end to an English dinner used to be a small savoury dish – a little Welsh Rabbit, sardines on toast, or a ‘Devil’, perhaps. I am at a loss to explain this peculiarly English preference for a savoury end to a meal. The more recogniseable custom – of ending a meal with a something sweet – goes back to at least medieval times when a feast finished with hippocras (a sweet spiced wine) and wafers. The tradition was probably based on the medical belief that sugar (or honey) and sweet spices acted as digestives. Sugar was very very expensive at that time and was used in s

An Indian meal to stay home for:
    2007-10-12 05:12:00
This post is not a rant about the state of curry restaurants in this Country. I will not mention how many times I have tried the same meal at different curry houses to find out that they all taste the same. And I refuse to enter into a debate about which city has the best curry. Instead - I'll just tell you how I make my curry at home - where it's worth the work, fresher than ever, and better than any curry I've ever eaten out. With the knowledge of Madhur Jaffrey, the support of Jamie Oliver and the tuition of Padmaja I managed to knock up a pretty good meal. It's just amazing how fresh ingredients that are full of flavour can manage to turn a dish around. This is how I did it:Onion BonjisI don't call them bhajis, because, although they are bhajis as I (an uneducated Westerner) know it, bhajis are really more like Indian-style tempura vegetables. These onion cakes do have a proper Indian name but I can't for the life of me remember what the name is. So we've named them Bonjis!4 onions, sliced3/4 cup white flour1 teaspoon turmeric1/2 teaspoon paprika1/2 teaspoon cumin powder1 teaspoon saltPepper to tasteSunflower oil for fryingThis part can be done in advance:Place the onions in a large bowl and measure all of the dry ingredients over them. Mix through with your hands and while doing so squeeze the onions so that they release their juices. The onion juice will combine with the flour to form a sticky batter around the onion slices. Heat the oil in a frying until sizzling. Drop handful sizes of batter into the oil to make small cakes. Fry on each side for about 5 minutes. Once complete remove to a paper towel or metal rack to drain. Before serving:Reheat the oil to sizzling. Re fry the cakes until golden brown and heated through - about 2 minutes each side. Leave to drain for another 2 minutes but then serve immediately with raita.Easy Raita1/2 cup natural yoghurtHandful of chopped corianderJuice of half a limeMix all ingredients together and refrigerate until rea

    Meal Time
    2007-06-29 02:40:00
After moving out of my parent's house, I moved in with two roommates. I honestly don't remember having home made meal with them. We ate out a lot, or ordered out a lot. Or, I wasn't home. Needless to say, if there was food involved, I had nothing to do with it.Then, I moved into my own little studio. I also started working double shifts and split shifts. I never bought groceries. Well, no real groceries. I only had a little mini fridge in my place anyhow. There was only enough room in it for a case of beer... which, it was normally loaded up with. Then, Tom and I moved into our 'barn'. It was a nice place and had a usable sized kitchen. Before Tom got hurt, he was the cook. And, man, could he cook! Its amazing that he was as skinny as he was! (Of course, I put on weight like it was going out of style!)After Tom got hurt, our lives were chaotic, of course. Meals were not a priority, anyhow. And people were still in their kindness mode of bringing meals to us. We als

    Big Mac or airline meal?
    2007-05-26 15:29:51
A top chef declared that he would rather eat a Big Mac than most meals served on airlines even in business class! Photo by utkurifat                    Photo by linghuaya What do you think? Well I reckon a Big Mac would be more filling and more recently cooked. I am inclined to take my own food with me when I fly. I like to have some fruit with me and a homemade sandwich, or even crackers and cheese, is tastier than the average economy class meal.Technorati Tags: Big Mac, airline meals, airline food

Marinated beef for a make-ahead meal
    2007-04-24 08:55:00
How do you marinate meat? Marinating is for sure one of the best ways to give meat more flavor and to tenderize it at the same time. Typically, we marinate meats for 6 to 24 hours before we finish them on the grill. Sometimes, I prefer to marinate meat over night after cooking it when I need to make-ahead meals.INGREDIENTS:Serves 6* 800 g beef, thick flank or similarMARINADE:* 1 dl (100 ml) Kikkoman Japanese Soy* pinch of sesame seeds* pinch of thyme* pinch of basil* 1 tablespoon orange juice* 1 teaspoon fresh chili pepper, choppedMETHOD:1. Cook until thermometer shows 54ºC [129.2Fº] OR desired temperature.5. Prepare marinade by combining all ingredients.6. Put meat in a plastic freezer bag, pour marinade in bag, refridgerate.7.
