| How the Body Works : The Immune Mechanism | | 2008-07-26 02:55:29 | | The immune mechanism is designed to protect the body against attack from invading microorganisms and foreign, potentially harmful molecules. There are four types of immune mechanisms. The nature of the invading antigen determines which type of mechanism is brought into action. Certain antigens promote an exaggerated response, called a hypersensitive reaction, or an allergy., which may be harmful to the body tissues.A type I reaction is an allergic response to foreign substances, usually proteins, entering the body. It is an immediate reaction which occurs within minutes or hours of the antigen entering the body. The diagram follows the events that occur in a type I response. The antigens enter the body and stimulate B-lymphocytes to produce antibodies. The antibodies then adhere to mast cells in the vessel wall. They neutralize the antigens and the mast cells release a chemical which causes, for example, the streaming eyes and the sneezing symptomatic of hay fever.A type II reaction is... | | By: Live Blood Cell Darkfield Analyse Blog | | |

| Taxol: Mechanism of action | | 2008-05-20 22:48:00 | | Taxol (paclitaxel)is anticancer drug which was produced natually .Taxol is a mitotic inhibitor used in cancer chemotherapy. It was discovered in a National Cancer Institute program at the Research Triangle Institute in 1967 when Monroe E. Wall and Mansukh C. Wani isolated it from the bark of the Pacific yew tree, Taxus brevifolia and named it 'taxol'.Paclitaxel is now used to treat patients with lung, ovarian, breast cancer, head and neck cancer, and advanced forms of Kaposi's sarcoma. Paclitaxel is also used for the prevention of restenosis. The anti-cancer drug Taxol works by interfering with processes within cells. The way in which Taxol binds to microtubule and prevents cell division is shown in this animation.Taxol works by interfering with normal microtubule breakdown during cell division. Together with docetaxel, it forms the drug category of the taxanes. It was the subject of a notable total synthesis by Robert A. Holton.Mechanism of actionTaxol interferes with the normal functi... | | By: Biosolution | | |

| Herceptin: Mechanism of action | | 2008-03-17 08:36:00 | | Herceptin is a humanized monoclonal antibody that acts on the HER2/neu (erbB2) receptor. Trastuzumab's principal use is as an anti-cancer therapy in breast cancer in patients whose tumors over express (produce more than the usual amount of) this receptor. Trastuzumab is administered either once a week or once every three weeks intravenously for 30 to 90 minutes.Mechanism of actionAmplification of HER2/neu (ErbB2) occurs in 25-30% of early-stage breast cancers.[1] It encodes the extracellular domain of her2. Although the signaling pathways induced by the HER2/neu receptor are incompletely characterized, it is thought that activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway is important. This pathway is normally associated with mitogenic signaling involving the MAPK pathway. However in cancer the growth promoting signals from HER2/neu are constitutively transmitted — promoting invasion, survival and angiogenesis of cells.[2] Furthermore overexpression can also confer therapeutic resistance to cancer th... | | By: Biosolution | | |

| Antikythera Mechanism | | 2007-05-11 14:54:26 | |
The Antikythera Mechanism, a device created by ancient Greeks and found over a hundred years ago by sponge divers continues to be an object of fascination for me.
This one little device simultaneously fulfills my interests in history, archaeology, gadgets and computers. You’d be hard pressed to find many other things that can do that.
Recently I came across two excellent resources for studying the device. Or if you prefer, they have interesting factoids and freaking huge pictures.
The first place you should stop into is the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project. Here you’ll find tons of information, reconstructions and explanations for just what this device did.
The next Xtek’s Xray page. Here you’ll find a small image, a radiograph of the device. Click on that image to be brought to their site and a 5120 x 6233 image.... | | By: ArsGeek | | |
