Medical Blogs May Threaten Patient Privacy
    2008-08-07 22:59:00
(HealthDay News) -- Blogs written by medical professionals may pose a threat to patient privacy, because the authors of the blogs may inadvertently reveal patient information, says a U.S. study that's the first to examine the issue. The researchers analyzed the contents of 271 medical blogs and found that 56.8 percent contained enough information to reveal the author's identity.Although obvious violations of patient privacy are rare, supposedly anonymous medical bloggers who provide information about their location, subspecialty or other personal details may reveal their identity to blog readers, noted Dr. Tara Lagu, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar, and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania. In some cases, patients described in medical blogs may be able to identify themselves, the researchers said. For example, three of the blogs in the study had recognizable photos of patients, including one with an extensive description of the patient and links to photos. The rese

Why fewer medical doctors are doing research
    2008-08-07 21:55:47
The road from disease research to disease cure isn't usually a smooth one. One role which bridges the laboratory and the clinic is that of the "clinician-scientist" -- a doctor who understands disease both in the patient and in the Petri dish. Yet an editorial published in Disease Models & Mechanisms (DMM), http://dmm.biologists.org, contends that clinician-scientists in the UK and elsewhere are not prospering, but rather are "under threat in a hostile environment." read more

A patient's search for dignity at Baystate Medical Center
    2008-08-05 14:19:15
I just spent the last three days as a patient at Baystate Medical Center. Suffice it to say I will live. I don't fault the medical care offered there-- much of it is excellent. (Only one mistake-- I hope-- and one near-mistake in my case.) But in the eleven and a half hours it took to me to get from the emergency room to a room of my own, I witnessed or experienced many different varieties of injury to the human spirit. My first stop is a chair right next to the security guards' office directly opposite the ambulance entrance. The guard on duty is a hefty blonde named that someone calls Kel.. Ambulance services and fire and police departments from surrounding communities pass through those doors and there is much colleagial mingling.A young woman comes through the ambulance entrance accompanied by a police officer. She's been crying very hard, her face is red and she has a tissue pressed to her eyes. The guard says to two colleagues, "Bet she's headed for the crisis unit. 'I hate

Matthew Woodson selling art for spider-bite medical bills
    2008-07-22 22:10:00
Matthew Woodson is an extremely talented artist and illustrator who was born and raised in rural southern Indiana. He graduated from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in early 2006. He still lives in Chicago in an apartment full of hardwood floors and taxidermy, with an unapologetically vocal cat and a dog that is skinnier than the grain. Now I will let Drawn explain why I am putting up this post, outside of just showing off Matthew's wonderful art, because they did it in a much more humorous and succinct way than I ever would have."Artist Matthew Woodson was recently bit by an unknown spider. Unlike Peter Parker who gained untold superpowers from a similar incident, this comics-related spider bite has put the artist in a tight financial situation. Read his blog for full details, but essentially, he is taking on commissioned illustration work — no job too small — to help pay for the medical bills over the next 8 months to keep the poisonous infection at bay."Here is hopin

    Medical Information
    2008-07-22 11:28:17
The combination of medical research and the openness and vastness of the internet has led to a new way of life for many people. If I need to visit a doctor, I will often ‘google’ for my symptoms or whatever I think is wrong before going so that I know the right questions to ask. I would not recommend relying totally on the internet for answers to all medical problems, but the resource is impressive if you know how to use it.You can read useful articles on mesothelioma if you know of someone affected by asbestos. Or for example, most recently I read an article about tinnitus which helped me enormously. I find that it always helps to listen to your doctor carefully and having an insight into your ailment before you visit helps to provide you with the right questions to ask and some useful back-ground information. If you are concerned, it is always a good idea to visit the doctor with a friend or relative. Having a second person present means that you can ask them what the doctor said

External electronic medical devices may malfunction during x-rays.
    2008-07-18 02:02:30
FDA informed healthcare professionals of the possibility that x-rays used during CT examinations may cause some implanted and external electronic medical devices to malfunction. Most patients with electronic medical devices undergo CT scans without any adverse consequences. However, the Agency has received a small number of reports of adverse events in which CT scans may have interfered with electronic medical devices, including pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulators, and implanted or externally worn drug infusion pumps. FDA is continuing to investigate the issue and is working with the manufacturer to raise awareness in the healthcare community. See the FDA Public Health Notification for a description of adverse event reports and recommendations regarding reducing the potential risk to patients. Subscribe to Medpharm by Email

    Reverse Aging at PATH Medical
    2008-07-11 15:07:00
Dr. Eric Braverman, author of The Edge Effect and Younger You, is one of the world's leading experts in anti-aging medicine and is a true believer that we can in fact turn back the clock on aging. Dr. Braverman is the director of the Place for Achieving Total Health (PATH) Medical Centers in New York and Philadelphia. I had several 80 year old clients in my Philadelphia Main Line studio who were patients of Dr. Braverman's PATH Medical Center, and from what I could tell they all blossomed under his team's care. The stated goal of PATH medical is to find your body's oldest and weakest parts and repair them (kind of like good auto maintenance). They begin with state of the art scanning, including brain maps; computerized tests of attention memory type, temperament, and personality; head to toe ultrasound backed with DEXA scans of body fat and bone density; and in some cases, CT IE angiograms, MRIs, and PET scans. You will learn things about your body you may not want to know!Once the

Icelandic Medical Students Volunteer in Palestine
    2008-07-04 13:39:00
A few Icelandic nursing and medical students, and one student from the junior college Kvennaskólinn in Reykjavík, are currently acting as volunteers in Palestine. Some of them teach English for Project Hope, others assist the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS).Nursing student Gunnar Pétursson, who belongs to the group of volunteers, told Fréttabladid their help is much needed.“Just us being in an ambulance, even though we don’t do anything else, means it will be allowed to pass through a road block. Palestinians’ freedom to travel is severely impaired. Patients are dying because ambulances are stopped,” Pétursson said.Pétursson explained that the group had originally planned to volunteer in Kenya, but one of the volunteers, Anna Tómasdóttir, suggested they go to Palestine instead where she had volunteered before. Most of the medical work the volunteers with a background in medicine have to perform is similar to the work in Iceland, Pétursson said.

    Are Medical Meetings Environmentally Unfriendly?
    2008-06-28 06:14:00
(HealthDay News) -- Anyone who has arrived at Chicago O'Hare, Orlando or Dallas airports during one of the dozens of huge medical meetings held every year will no doubt encounter tens of thousands of specialists from all over world thronging the hallways, the Starbucks, the luggage claim area.Of course, the attendees use jet fuel to get to the meeting and gas to get from the airport to the hotel where, once they're checked in, they'll have the option or reusing or not reusing their towels. But an expert writing in the June 28 issue of the British Medical Journal argues that medical meetings should be a thing of the past. The author, Dr. Malcolm Green, a professor emeritus of respiratory medicine at Imperial College London, confesses to having attended such meetings himself throughout an illustrious career going back 30 years."This is not a matter of whether, but when," Green said. "The adaptations to climate change over the next few decades will be massive. This will be an inevitable par
