Guidelines Seek to Reduce Medication Errors Involving Kids
    2008-06-25 08:05:36
By Amanda Gardner, HealthDay Reporter FRIDAY, April 11 (HealthDay News) -- The group that accredits most U.S. hospitals issued guidelines Friday to help prevent medication errors in hospitalized children. Among the recommendations: Children should be weighed in kilograms -- the global standard and the standard for medication dosing -- when they are admitted to a hospital. "The vast majority of countries utilize the metric system, and the recommendations for pediatric medication use are based on the metric system," said Dr. Peter Angood, vice president and chief patient safety officer for The Joint Commission, which announced the "Sentinel Event Alert" at a teleconference. "Sadly, there seems to be a lack of widespread appreciation even among health-care providers that children have unique safety and medication needs," said Dr. Matthew Scanlon, assistant professor of pediatrics-critical care at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a member of the Joint Commission's Sentinel Event

    Medication To Do List
    2008-06-23 13:11:00
Like everything else on this blog this comes from my own personal experience so if I am saying one thing and your doctor is saying another chances are you should listen to the MD. That being said depending on the doctor it is always a good idea to do your research and if you want to scare the hell out of yourself go visit Google and enter the following "Name of med + lawsuit". On with the list. 1. Fiber is your friend. Seems like every single med or med combo I have ever been on tends to dam up the inner working. I have tried a variety of prescription meds to ease this situation and turns out the best solution is Raisin Bran or the knock off version. 2. Watch your diet. So you battle depression for six months and finally the fog is beginning to lift then a new situation presents itself. Nothing fits and some how you managed to put on a lot of weight that is not easily accounted for. I have no idea whether it is the way the med effects the metabolism rate or it is tied into eati

Health Tip: Giving Pain Medication to Your Child
    2008-02-09 08:21:37
(HealthDay News) - Giving your child medications, even over-the-counter medicines, should always be carefully monitored by your doctor. The American Academy of Family Physicians offers these suggestions before you give any pain medication to your child:If a person younger than age 18 has the flu or chickenpox, never give the person aspirin, which could lead to a rare but deadly condition called Reye's Syndrome. Acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) is a generally safe painkiller for young children. Be careful about giving ibuprofen to children who are allergic to aspirin, as they may also be allergic to ibuprofen. Pain relievers may be dangerous for children with asthma, so don't administer them without a doctor's consent. Be careful not to give your child too much of the same medication. Sometimes the same active ingredient can be found in more than one medication. - - NFE/0.8 Ayurveda News http://news.google.com/news?q=ayurveda&ned=us&lang=en&ie=UTF-8 Google

Depression in Young Doctors Tied to Medication Errors
    2008-02-09 08:08:00
(HealthDay News) -- Medical residents who are depressed are about six times more likely to make medication errors than those who aren't depressed, says a study that looked a 123 pediatric residents at three children's hospitals in the United States.Researchers found that 20 percent of the residents were depressed, and 74 percent were burned out. During the study period, the residents made a total of 45 medications errors, and those who were depressed made 6.2 times more medication errors than those who weren't depressed. There didn't appear to be any link between higher medication error rates and burnout. The study was published online Feb. 7 in the British Medical Journal. These findings suggest that doctors' mental health may play a more significant role in patient safety than previously suspected, the study authors said. In addition, the high burnout rate among residents in this study -- consistent with other studies -- indicates that methods of training doctors may cause stress that

Cancer Drugs - Learning About Cancer Medication
    2008-01-10 16:03:00
There are many types of cancer that people may suffer from but one thing that stays similar is the types of medication that they may be using. There are many forms of medication that you may be prescribed with various types of side effect to go with each. Your doctor will go over your particular case with you and determine which type of treatment is the best. Your treatment may consist of such treatments as Chemotherapy, Hormone therapy, Biological therapy, Alternative and complimentary therapy and of course drug treatment. Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer drugs which are done intravenously, by mouth, Injectable and topical applications. They stop the growth of cancer cells as they destroy the cells. This type of treatment is usually done in cycles. They will usually alternate treatments with rest periods to allow the person to recuperate. Some of the anti-cancer medications that your doctor may use may include such medications as: Hexalen, Elspar, Blenoxane, Xeloda, Idamycin and Doxil just to name a few. Most cancer medications come with a hefty list of side effects. Unfortunately the necessity of the medication makes it almost impossible to avoid side effects. If you suffer from severe side effects your doctor will most likely prescribe another medication to counter act the side effects. Some of the side effects that you may or may not experience with cancer medications might be: Feeling very tired and weak, more susceptible to infections and they can bleed and bruise easily. Keep in mind that you can use other drugs to counteract the side effects and that makes it much easier for you to undergo the necessary cancer treatment. Radiation therapy is the form of treatment where they use ionizing radiation. This type of treatment kills off the cell in the area that is being treated. This makes it impossible for the cells to grow back. Often times the area of cancer will be surgically removed and then the radiation and chemotherapy will start. If you choose to do the horm

Prescription Medication Addiction Almost Killed Me
    2007-11-13 15:45:49
Prescription medications was surely something I needed, but it was was also something I abused. After neck surgery I was still in need of pain medication, something which I hoped the surgery would take care of. The Loritab I was taking worked fine, but like any good addict, I figured if one worked really well, then two Loritab would work great. Well the extra pill sure made me feel good, but as time went on my tolerance to Loritab grew. Pretty soon I went from four a day to 14 a day. I definitely developed a Loritab addiction and couldn’t stop. I finially entered a medical detox that understood how to detox someone who had prescription medication addiction, but who also had to return to using the same drug. This terrified me as I could never give up mu Loritab, but the Loritab abuse was killing me. After completing the medical detox, I went to a rehab that understood prescription medication addiction and Loritab addiction in general. They haelped me understand the difference be

When You Need Medication For Panic Attacks
    2007-07-18 14:24:07
By: Ian Jefferson It is necessary to take panic attack medication for the treatment of panic disorders. There is a wide variety of medications available and most need a prescription and cannot be purchased over the counter. When a person suffers from a panic disorder, the symptoms may include accelerated heartbeat, palpitations, sweating and various forms of distortions. One of the problems associated with suffering from severe panic attacks is that the person suffers from fear and anxiety of future panic attacks which may increase the symptoms and could cause other health problems. Treatment with panic attack medication is therefore essential.Panic attack medications that allow the individual to feel calm, relaxed and at ease belong to a group of medicines referred to as Benzodiazepines, also referred to as sedatives or tranquilizers. When taking this form of panic attack medication, one may experience a decrease in panic attack disorder symptoms. The disadvantage of using Benzodiazepines is that they are addictive and cause constant fatigue. Various forms of this type of medication include Librium, Valium, Ativan and Xanax.Antidepressants are also a form of panic attack medication which is used to treat long-term symptoms of panic disorder. On many occasions, the individual suffering from the panic disorder is also suffering from depression, therefore this form of treatment is utilized. Antidepressants work with the neurotransmitters in the brain, which send and receive messages, to control the symptoms caused by the anxiety disorder. Various types of antidepressants include Celexa, Pamelor, Elavil, Prozac and Luvox, to name just a few. These antidepressants all work with either one or two neurotransmitters in the brain, each targeting a particular source or symptom of anxiety. When taking this form of panic attack medication, there are a number of adverse side effects that one may suffer from. As with any medication, not all individuals suffer from these side

The increasing trend of counterfeit medicines and the danger posed by unregulated markets is the focus of Chapter One of the Annual Report of the International Narcotics Control Board. The Report also reviews worldwide illicit drug production, trafficking and abuse trends. Other highlights include the widespread misuse of prescription and weight loss drugs.Volgens de RIVM, het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu is de kans groot dat mannen met erectieproblemen die hun medicatie via andere kanalen dan de apotheek betrekken, te maken krijgen met een vervalsing. Reducing Blood Pressure Without Medication
    2007-05-20 11:02:34
Once again I am seeing the results of living Healthy in a reduction in Blood Pressure. I have just finished my third week of a eating live style change (diet) that is focused on weight loss, and changing my blood chemistry.  As mentioned earlier I have high cholesterol, triglycerides, am pre-diabetic and my blood pressure has crept up beyond acceptable limits.  My goal through a change in my eating habits is to change each of these problem areas and bring them back into control.  In addition I have added mild forms of exercise back into my life.  Walking the dog, hikes in the mountains and along the local rivers.  I have cut way back on alcohol use and after three weeks am seeing the results.  I take my blood pressure first thing in the morning to keep the time consistent, and also before the stress of the day starts to build.  In three weeks I have seen a drop in 15 points systolic and 10 points diastolic.  I am almost back in the acceptable range in both categories.  This is quicker and beyond what I expected.  I am living proof that eating right and staying active can make a difference. My goal is to continue with the change in my eating habits indefinitely and to add intensity to my exercise over time.  What I am going for is something that I can sustain the rest of my life and right now working out at the gym 5 days a week is not sustainable, but brisk walks are.  It is worth the changes in diet and lifestyle to know I am becoming healthier day by day.  My 44th birthday is three weeks away.  My plan is that on my 45th birthday I will be 45 pounds lighter, that my blood chemistry will be in line, and that my blood pressure will be controlled naturally.  It is so worth the battle.
