| | Are Medical Meetings Environmentally Unfriendly? | | 2008-06-28 06:14:00 | | (HealthDay News) -- Anyone who has arrived at Chicago O'Hare, Orlando or Dallas airports during one of the dozens of huge medical meetings held every year will no doubt encounter tens of thousands of specialists from all over world thronging the hallways, the Starbucks, the luggage claim area.Of course, the attendees use jet fuel to get to the meeting and gas to get from the airport to the hotel where, once they're checked in, they'll have the option or reusing or not reusing their towels. But an expert writing in the June 28 issue of the British Medical Journal argues that medical meetings should be a thing of the past. The author, Dr. Malcolm Green, a professor emeritus of respiratory medicine at Imperial College London, confesses to having attended such meetings himself throughout an illustrious career going back 30 years."This is not a matter of whether, but when," Green said. | | Meetings with Remarkable Men | Gurdjieff's Search for Hidden Knowledge | | 2008-06-19 16:48:38 | | In 1920, an unknown man appeared in Europe having lived through some extraordinary experiences in the East. His name was George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff.Meetings with Remarkable Men is the story of his early years. It is the second volume of the All and Everything trilogy, as well as Gurdjieff's personal autobiography, originally published in 1963.The book takes the form of Gurdjieff's reminiscences about various "remarkable men" that he has met, beginning with his father. They include the Armenian priest Pogossian; his friend Soloviev, Prince Lubovedsky, a Russian prince with metaphysical interests, and a couple of others. In the course of describing these characters, Gurdjieff weaves their stories into the story of his own travels, and also into an overarching narrative which has them cooperate in locating spiritual texts and/or masters in various lands (mostly Central Asia). Gurdjieff calls this group the "Seekers of Truth".Gurdjieff's referring to Sufis by the term "Seekers of Truth" i | | By: Inspirations and Creative Thoughts | | |

| Part VIII: CAIR Has Sponsored Islamist Meetings, Denigrated Muslim Moderates | | 2008-04-02 09:29:42 | | CAIR has co-sponsored and taken part in multiple Islamist conferences in the United States, while at the same time condemning and seeking to censor more moderate Muslims. Those actions are described in today's installment in IPT's comprehensive 10-part series on the group. Among the highlights: In May 1998, CAIR co-sponsored with IAP, HLF, MAYA and others a rally at Brooklyn College where speakers spewed anti-Jewish rhetoric. | | CompletelyUselessBaseballDiary: Things That Sucked About This Year's Winter Meetings | | 2007-12-11 11:25:13 | | Holy hell that was exciting!!! What with the writers strike and football season pretty much over, I just might take up shuffleboard or perhaps whaling. Either way, there were far more things that sucked about this year's winter meetings than there were things that simply caused me exuberance. To salute this enormity of sucktitude, I give you the (short) list of things that completely blew and/or sucked about the aforementioned meetings, ironically held in a state that doesn't give a rat's ass about baseball but will certainly eat a rat's ass (if battered and fried correctly).

| | Tuesday Winter Meetings Rumor Mill | | 2007-12-04 10:00:59 | |
This diary is going to serve as a catch-all for all the rumors floating around out there today; Cubs-related and othwerwise. Feel free to post anything and everything, substantiated or not, over here.
I'm going to start off with a doozy. Joel Sherman, via MLTR, says that the Cubs could be interested in Johnny Damon?!?!?!?!?!?
I wanted him two years ago when he went to the Yanks. Now, not so much. This would, however, be vintage Hendry: Get an aging superstar on a major decline and sit back and act like the fans should be impressed.
Gah.
Have at it below.
Update: Moving this to the front, as things could start picking up in the afternoon. Hear/see a rumor coming out of Nashville? Post it here, Cubs-related or not.

| | Happy Winter Meetings, Everyone! | | 2007-12-03 10:30:09 | |
Can't you just see it? Right now Jimbo and Brian Cashman (or "The Cash Man," as Jimbo likes to call him) are all snuggled up by the fire in matching ski sweaters drinking hot cocoa and scheming on how to screw Boras out of his agent commission for the next 20 years. Meanwhile, Theo and Billy have fallen asleep in the hot tub, visions of sugarplums and low-cost, high-OBP players dancing in their heads. Outside, Walt Jocketty lurks in the snowy evening, stamping his feet and blowing on his fingers, knowing that, sooner or later, the guy who pushed out Eckstein for Izturis is going to be cast out of the circle of trust, opening the door, once again, into the magical world of popcorn balls, bailey's and coffee, and large, large checkbooks.
Welcome to the Winter Meetings!
It's only Day One, and lookey what I found already!
Jim Hendry may view 26 year-old outfielder Matt Murton as expendable, if only because he's not the left-handed hitter the Cubs crave.

| | The Winter Meetings Are so Close! December 3rd Through December 7th | | 2007-11-26 05:56:00 | | That's right! It's hard to believe that the winter meetings begin one week from today, commencing on December 3rd and ending the following Friday, December 7th. The most visible and obtainable pitcher will likely be the Minnesota Twins phenom lefty, Johan Santana, and it seems like the Twins are more than willing to trade him for good young talent. This is from SI...."Minnesota's proposal to Santana, who was 15-13 with a 3.33 ERA and 235 strikeouts in 2007, was for a four-year extension -- not the five years that's been previously reported -- and isn't believed to have brought the sides much closer to a contract. While Santana's asking price isn't known, it is generally thought to be well in excess of the $126-million contract the Giants gave last winter to free agent pitcher Barry Zito, who isn't considered in Santana's league. It is believed that as a free agent next winter the lefthanded Santana could earn at least $150 million, or more, providing he stays on his current pa | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |

| | | Green Meetings and Conferences | | 2007-08-28 03:29:36 | | A major commitment of this blog is toward the environment. Meetings and events are not among the major causes of the environmental crisis we're living in (or is it?). Nonetheless the right attitude toward the environment is that every small contribution counts. Moreover meetings have a strong communication impact on attendees, therefore embracing a green policy in a conference might have a strong influence on attitudes toward the event.I had a look on Google and I was surprised on how much has been done in terms of guidelines, checklists. pocket guides. I decided to spread the word about green meetings and to ask you if you feel there was the need of new or different tools to accomplish the objective of reducing the impact.- The EPA 'Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Guide'- The super complete Canada's 'Greening Manual'. The most comprehensive.- Some good case study on 'Meetings That Don't Make an Impact'. - The MPI is very interested in the topic and has a concise 'How G | | By: Event Management | | |

| | Meetings are a waste of time are they ? | | 2007-07-26 08:27:00 | | HOW TO HAVE A GOOD MEETINGFirst of all, consider whether the meeting is really necessary. To have a meeting just for the sake of it is a waste of time and resource. Could the business in hand be dealt with by a telephone call, an exchange of e-mails, an audio conferencing call or a video conference or could it simply wait until the next scheduled meeting? If a meeting is necessary, make sure that the right people are going to be there. Too many people and the meeting is likely to be unproductive; too few and affected individuals are likely to feel excluded. If the meeting is of a standing body, extra individuals may need to be invited for particular agenda items.Make sure that everyone knows in good time when and where the meeting will be held, who will be there, and what will be discussed. If you know that someone is out of the office or on holiday until just before the meeting, make special arrangements to advise them of the relevant details.Make sure that everyone has the agenda, min | | By: Gordon Whyte's Blog of the daily challenges of an | | |

By Meetings & Incentive Travel?s 2002 Market Report | | 2007-07-24 06:00:19 | | Scottsdale, Ariz., was voted the number one incentive travel destination in the United States in a February 2002 survey of 156 corporate buyers from across Canada. Responding to the recent Meetings & Incentive Travel?s 2002 Market Report survey, these planners, whose opinions reflect industry trends, voted Scottsdale ahead of Hawaii, San Francisco/Napa Valley, Phoenix, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Los Angeles, New Orleans and New York City.
When asked which destinations planners are considering for incentive programs in the next two years, 93 percent of respondents said they are using or considering the U.S. Sunbelt region (Florida, California and Arizona). This represents an increase of 32 percent over last year. An incentive program is a trip offered as a prize, particularly to stimulate the productivity of employees or sales agents.

But think about what happens when it is on a large scale. For example, during a typical five day conference, 2,500 attendees will use 62,500 plates, 87,500 napkins, 75,000 cups or glasses and 90,000 cans or bottles. Plus there are all the greenhouse emissions from people travelling to and from the conference and paper and plastic waste from conference handouts.A typical 5 day conference for 2,500 attendees will use 90,000 cans or bottles, 750,000 cups and 87,500 napkins (Meeting Strategies Worldwide, 2003).Here are 10 top tips for green me | | By: Event Management | | |
| | It's Official...Meetings Make us dumber! | | 2007-03-18 15:43:00 | | I came across this article recently on MSNBC.com that confirms what I have known for years. I've been through more than enough meetings in my life to know that bad meetings actually do in fact make us dumber (article link posted below)!A poorly run and executed meeting is perfect for any Turtle. My company, for example, recently decided to conduct a meeting amongst all departments to help "improve the company" and "provide better service to our customers". This sounds like a very promising concept as most companies don't focus enough on improving. The problem though is that very few people in my company actually understand how to run a meeting effectively. More importantly most of the people invited to the meeting, who have more tenure than I, know that our superiors don't know how to run a meeting effectively. The result: Turtle meeting! So what is a Turtle meeting you ask?
