Families of Flight 93 victims: Let's get a memorial built
    2008-05-02 13:50:00
Just yesterday, I noted that I felt it was a shame there is no memorial yet at Ground Zero in Manhattan. Today, the AP reports families of the victims of Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pa., are equally as annoyed that there isn't yet a memorial there -- and that there's been bickering over its design. Click here for the story.

38 names at today's Homeless Memorial

Cold. Old faces, new faces. 38 candles were lit and 38 names were read.Rev. Dyson coordinated this year's memorial. It was tender and movingA half dozen of us from Arise came down. I got to meet an Iranian man who is a frequent poster on our listserve AriseAction and we talked about peace.I saw Kevin Noonan, the Director of the Open Pantry, and he told me that he'd found a place for the food pantry just today. It's up State St. in a building owned by Springfield Partners for Community Action, right across from Arise's old office. And our new office is only two blocks further down State St., opposite the community college.I'm 60 years old today. I've always liked my birthdate-- first day of winter, nearly the solstice, and yet the days grow longer from here. But on the darkest night of the year, in cities across the country, we stop to remember those who have died without a home.Atom

    A memorable memorial
    2007-11-29 05:22:35
EulogiesThe President of Southbourne Literary Society who introduced me and gave the vote of thanks was Mr Bonsor who was at LAMDA with my public speaking tutor Angela Brennan and delivered a superb eulogy at her memorial service. Although this was back in February 2000, I remember it very well and as I have noticed that a number of readers are discovering this blog and website while searching the net for guidance for speaking at funerals, I thought I would mention a few of the elements which made that speech so appropriate. There must have been at least 100 people in the church and Mr Bonsor told us about how Angela was the best student at poetry readings when he studied with her. Anyone who had her as their teacher would have noticed how, even in her 60s, poetry was still important to her, both in the lessons she taught and in performances she still gave locally until her failing health meant she had to give up. By contrast, he then went on to mention some of Angela's early professional credits, such as the first radio soap opera Mrs Dale's Diary. This was certainly something I didn't know about her; I suspect the same applied to many of the other mourners.Public Speaking Tip #83: If you are preparing a eulogy, aim to make the content a mixture of familiar information about the deceased which those who knew them will remember with affection and facts about the person's achievements which may be less well-known, even surprising, thereby reinforcing the fact that they led a remarkable life. The Christmas before Angela died, she had sent out an excellent self-published book of her own poetry. Mr Bonsor finished with a reading of one selection, a piece which I thought really stood out the first time I read it. It was about Angela's love of being amongst people of all kinds.Of course, being a trained actor, his delivery was always likely to be faultless but I was still struck by how well he had familiarised himself with her poem. It was also an example of good struc

Memorial...I mean Labor, No, Memorial Friday. Labor Friday?
    2007-08-31 17:50:00
Is it “Labor Day” or “Memorial Day” this Monday? I know one is at the start of the summer and the other is at the end, but I can never remember which is which. It is important too because if it is “Memorial Day” then I can’t really say “Happy Memorial Day” to everyone, now can I? How can we be happy on a day we are supposed to be remembering those who fell so we can stand? It should be a solemn day one would think.Of course, “Labor Day” is not really that much happier. To “labor” is to work and most of us would rather not have to work if given the choice, so a day off from work to celebrate work is kind of back-asswards come to think of it.Maybe we should just ignore whatever title is placed on the day and just celebrate having a Monday off. No, that won’t work either because, if it is “Memorial Day” and not “Labor Day,” then I will be accused (again) of being unpatriotic and denying the sacrifice of our troops. Damnit, I just can’t win. It must be

There will be much talk in the weeks to come about what the Broncos plan to do to remember their fallen teammates as we close in on the start of the 2007 season.  While we still don't know everything the Broncos might do on the field the team made a major announcement regarding how it plans to remember Darrent Williams off of it. Check out the Fine Piece written by J. Hung around there for like 2 hours and then hit the road again for Costa Mesa's amazing South Coast Plaza. Which was a treat since I hadn't been there for a couple months. Not too many people which was good, but also not many stores with good sales. Didn't look around in too many stores, but just the basics, like Ron Herman, Saks Fifth, Ralph Lauren, H&M, and Barneys Co-Op. All I ended up getting was a pair of jeans from Barneys. I'd been looking for a pair of skinny stonewashed jeans for a long time so I was kinda happy. They're from this obscure brand called Cheap Monday headed by some Swedish designers. W

    Stories Behind Memorial Day
    2007-05-28 21:47:00
י"א בסיון תשס"זVery good article.America's Honor: The Stories Behind Memorial DayBY PETER COLLIERMonday, May 28, 2007 12:01 a.m. EDTIn my own boyhood, figures such as Jimmy Doolittle, Audie Murphy and John Basilone were household names. And it was assumed that what they had done defined us as well as them, telling us what kind of nation we were. But the 110 Medal recipients alive today are virtually unknown except for a niche audience of warfare buffs. Their heroism has become the military equivalent of genre painting. There's something wrong with that.Read some of the stories at the link above. May our Veterans be blessed and honored among us.Hat-Tip to Jack's Shack for link.Technorati tags: Memorial Day

Prayers for us on Memorial Day
    2007-05-28 16:49:51
Prayer on Memorial Day Lord Jesus Christ, Today we honor the memory of those men and women who have given their lives for their compatriots in the cause of freedom. They have worked, fought, and died for the heritage of freedom, brotherhood, and honor that they have passed on to us. Help us to recall that you yourself gave up your life for all human beings in the cause of true freedom - to save us from self-love and sin. Teach us the true meaning of peace and freedom, that the real battle must always take place within ourselves before it will be won in families and nations. Make us keep your memory in our Eucharistic celebrations and pray for the peace and freedom of the whole world. Prayer to St. Martin of Tours (Patron Saint of Soldiers) Dear well-beloved Saint, you were first a soldier like your father. Converted to the Church, you became a soldier of Christ, a priest and then a Bishop of Tours. Lover of the Poor, and model for pagans and Christians alike, protect our soldier

MEMORIAL DAY – WWI – POLAR BEAR + WWII PARATROOPER + VIETNAM - MARINE
    2007-05-28 13:30:00
MEMORIAL DAY WWI – POLAR BEAR, WWII PARATROOPER & VIETNAM MARINEI wrote this post for Memorial Day (2005) to honor my Grandfather (Maternal) and My Father who were both Veterans that fought bravely in War.My Brother-In-Law Raymond (Larry) Leibold who served honorably in Vietnam with The United States Marine Corps. While Memorial Day is the commemoration of those soldiers killed during war, I wanted to highlight two Veterans that did not die during the war. For the past few years I have been trying to find records and documentation that described what they went through so that we can live free.World WWI – Polar BearThe picture below is Aldred S. Buckler. No, they are not five brothers, just an over exposure of my Grandfather taken in Murmansk Russia in 1918. Strangely enough he was a twin. My Grandfather served with the “Polar Bears,” Regiment 339, Supply Company. Below is their story:Detroit's Polar Bears and their confusing war For the majority of American soldiers in the bat

    Happy Memorial Day!
    2007-05-28 12:00:00
Hello, today is Memorial Day in the United States. Memorial Day is a holiday we celebrate the last Monday of May.It was created to honor the fallen Union soldiers in the American Civil War. Nowadays, we remember fallen soldiers from any war or family members we have lost.Memorial Day is commonly known as the start of the summer season. We like to get together with family members to do outdoor activities such as barbecuing, having picnics, and going to beach. Sometimes, I like going camping, but I did not do that this year. Perhaps I will go camping for Labor Day, which is the first Monday of September. From Wikipedia-In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also a time for picnics, family gatherings, and sporting events. Some Americans view Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer and Labor Day as the unofficial end of the season. The national Click it or ticket campaign ramps up beginning Memorial Day weekend, noting the beginning of the most dangerous season for auto acci

    Memorial Day Reading Material
    2007-05-28 09:21:07
It's Memorial Day, the unofficial beginning of summer, which of course means training camp is just around the corner.  And here's some reading material for you all to check out if you have any free moments before you head out to a BBQ or any other Memorial Day event you got planned. CAM OPEN MINDED Cam Cameron finally says what a lot of us Dolphin fans have been wanting to hear from him: "[Culpepper] hasn't been on the field," Cameron said of the sidelined quarterback. "He hasn't been 100 percent. ... For me to make an evaluation on a guy I've never seen play with my own two eyes, I'm not going to go there." So it seems like should Miami ever get Trent Green from KC, Culpepper's ticket out of Miami isn't necessarily punched.  As far as Culpepper's health goes, he had this to say: "Everything's a go as far as I know," Culpepper said. "I'm going to see Dr. [James] Andrews in the next couple of weeks for a little bit more clearance, but at the same time my mind is sti

Memorial Day brings flowers and gifts
    2007-05-28 07:00:00
Daily-timesFor many people, Memorial Day means deciding what to toss on the grill hamburgers or hot dogs. But for other people, including Sherry Fresques, the day involves the more somber decision of what to put on her son's grave. On Memorial Day 2005, Fresques was informed that her 26-year-old son, Jeremy Fresques, a distinguished first lieutenant in the Air Force's elite Special Forces unit, was one of four Americans killed in a plane crash in Iraq...

    Pre-Memorial Day Picnic
    2007-05-28 01:10:28
Sunday afternoon couldn’t have been better for a picnic at the park. The day started off cloudy and a little bit drizzly, but by 11:30 or so the sun broke through. The temperature hovered around the mid-70’s, and a light breeze kept the bugs at bay. We headed over to the park with the Henrichsens right behind us and the Canas‘ following a few minutes later. Our boys promptly took over the sandbox and began diligently building… a volcano? Or something. Whatever it was, Hunter was busy commanding the younger boys who followed orders obediently, reinforcing walls, fetching water, and digging, digging, digging. Meanwhile, us parent-types chowed down on sandwiches and potato salad, deviled eggs and Korean ribs, chips and grapes and watermelon, cookies and soda and a whole lot more. We tend to over-do it at these family get-togethers. Three coolers, one picnic hamper, and several grocery bags of food really ought to be more than enough to feed six adults, ha

And we'll also have the usual categories of Current Events, General Knowledge, IQ Trivia and True or False. The Red Sox are playing the Cleveland Indians on Monday night, but we will be getting Trivia going at about 9:30 PM, so we won't be having the late night version we had last Monday. For those whose mouths opened in delight,For those whose lips were wet with the truth,For those whose pens and ideas flowed forth,For those who constructed the shores in light,For those still weeping after the music waned,For those now spent of this; our mortal choir,Your day is marked with solemn remembranceAnd your account slumbers `neath the world. We will soon ask you for a prudent counselOn matters of war and subversions to truth.Lend us your guidance one last time,For we are of need your tongue. It is reason we now seek.It is a granite tenacity…Come! Speak! Speak, I pray!Pour forth your knowledge!Speak! For this; our world, cannot wait…mrp(End of post)

Remember our fallen heroes on Memorial Day
    2007-05-26 19:36:00
As we begin our Memorial Day weekend, let’s not forget what this holiday is all about and why we continue to live in a free country.Without the sacrifices of millions of men and women over history who have given their lives for our country, we would not enjoy the freedoms we have today. If you’re watching a baseball game or any other sporting event this weekend, just remember that we wouldn’t even have these pleasures without those who have selflessly laid down their lives for our country. Here are excerpts from a past Memorial Day speech by President Bush at Arlington National Cemetery:"Every year on this day, we pause to remember Americans fallen by placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. I'm honored to do that this morning on behalf of the American people. The names of the men buried there are known only to God, but their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten by our nation."At our National Cemetery, we receive the fallen in sorrow, and we take them to an honored p

An estimated 38 million Americans, 1.7 percent more than last year, are expected to travel 50 miles or more this Memorial Day weekend, according to the AAA. About 83 percent of them will drive. AMERICA: Memorial Day Motorists Will Pay Record Gasoline Prices in U.S.
    2007-05-26 01:17:00
by Jordan BurkeTravelers during the Memorial Day weekend will pay record gasoline prices and may face even higher charges on the way home. The national average price for regular gasoline climbed 39 percent this year to more than $3.20 a gallon as refinery breakdowns cut production. Inventories are 7 percent below the five-year average, prompting some analysts to predict more increases. ``There is no mathematical way we can catch up'' to replenish supplies, said Mark Routt at Energy Security Analysis Inc. in Wakefield, Massachusetts. ``The pressure is going to be on through September.'' Prices rose 15 days in a row to a record $3.227 a gallon on May 23, AAA said on its Web site. Futures have jumped 47 percent this year, including a 5 percent rise this month. Retail gasoline typically lags behind changes in futures prices. The nationwide average pump price for regular gasoline fell 0.2 cents yesterday, according
