Fond Food Memories from the Army Days
    2008-07-16 11:17:13
16 July 2008After meeting Baohui, went to grab some bite before a late dinner. Had a $1 popiah at the coffeeshop right opposite Serangoon JC. Think the hard work and mental churning of ideas have increased my metabolic rate. Instead of buying half a steamed chicken for a bite, we went to the traditional grocery shop adjacent to the coffeeshop and bought Indomee instant noodles.Back in my army training in SISPEC at Pulau Tekong, I used to buy Indomee instant noodles for supper whenever there is time to patronise the canteen. During training days, such food, when enjoyed with fellow comrades, acts as morale-boosters.Another food item that I vividly always remember would be the Milo Bar. I remember that I would always smuggle a bar when there is outfield training. I would also buy a few extra packets to resell to my bunkmates. Those were the days.Baohui volunteered to help me cook the fabulous noodles. Due to some delays on my fault, the first serving had the noodles a little too soft...A

    Mission Trip Memories...
    2008-06-28 17:01:10
Last night Bart and I spent some time with a few of the kids. Jimmy had just returned from a MIssion Trip to Inner City Milwaukee. It is interesting to see the things he thinks are important to report. Here are some examples and his view of life. Also interesting to see the kinds of questions that the other kids ask. Jimmy: I had a meatball sub at Subway Dad.Bart: Oh yeah, what do you have on it?Jimmy: Lettuce, tomatoes and Cucumbers ... of course.--------------------------------------JImmy: We went to Lake Michigan.Dominhyk: Did you see any Sea Lamprey? (I had to google that to even know what it was!)-----------------------------------------Jimmy: I had to sleep next to the youth pastor. It was not a good thing.-----------------------------------------Jimmy: Dad, Did you know that in Milwaukee the Fire Engines are Green?Meatball subs, Sea Lampreys, Sleeping Arrangements, and Fire Engines. Guess the actual Mission of the MIssions Trip kind of got forgotten.

On Taste Memories and The Economy
    2008-06-27 13:21:35
When I experience something of taste worth noting, I archive it within the catacombs of my taste memories. There it is tagged and filed away - until there is new life breathed into it again, on some chance encounter with my taste buds.My palate has slowly matured. I wasn't always one to remark on how great a microbrew was. But now I appreciate the bold, earthy and spicy undertones contained in the hoppy liquid. I appreciate the complexities of each type of brew. And every now and again these same taste memories resurface like amber ghosts haunting me with unequaled sweetness. I begin to ache for another chance - another dance with this foamy goodness. My palate of course has not singled out microbrews exclusively, in it's maturity. I have taken on all types of complex tastes and textures not attractive to me in my younger years. This point is my life is very enlightening and I have entered a culinary awareness that rivals anything else I have experienced. As humans we are drawn tow

Guest Post With Kate Jacobs : On Food Memories From Childhood
    2008-06-27 13:14:38
I got a chance to ask Kate Jacobs, author of The Friday Night Knitting Club; And her most recent foodie geared novel Comfort Food , a very personal question.RC: How do you feel food memories from childhood shape us into adults? Image © Kate Jacobs. KJ: We all have wonderful memories of meals shared with families, sitting around the table with the Thanksgiving turkey and summer barbecues eating corn on the cob.I love birthday cake, just like the main character Gus in my new novel Comfort Food, and I remember my sister decorating a cake that looked like a pizza with all the toppings for my fifth grade sleepover party. That was the birthday I got a puppy, Pepsi, who was my first Springer Spaniel and one of my dearest friends ever. It’s all connected for me: the cake, the friends, the puppy. That was one of the best days of my life! And I love to recall having fresh fruit pie at my grandmother’s house Made with cherries that my brothers and sisters had just picked off the trees

My Summer Memories At Root Beer Stand, Teenager Cherished Rootbeer Soda Memories, Now Closed Replaced by Fast Food Chain
    2008-06-22 22:18:12
My favorite flavored soda flavor of all time is root beer. For the reason that it has many great memories along with it. It probably is not really about the flavor at all. But about the memories that go along with drinking that flavor of soda that is very good with taste. My summer memories going to the root beer stand almost every day when I was a young girl and my teenage years hanging out at that fun place. Would go with family, friends it is the type of place either sit in the car or at the

    Memories from Childhood
    2008-05-28 06:05:00
The memories of childhood linger on with us however far we have traveled on the path of life. It appears as if everything happened just yesterday. As a young kid I used to love the rainy season, which we call ‘The Monsoons”. I still love the rains. It is the time when the frogs from the neighborhood pond, used to have a field day. I used to love the croaking sound, in the dark nights while slowly

Old Cars in Car Lots Feeling Antique Memories - Vehicles from 50s, 60s, 70s Rusting Away Visions of Once Running Beautiful Cars from Long Ago Car
    2008-05-16 10:12:41
A guy friend who likes old cars. He is very into antique things in general but he buys then fixes cars up to sell again. Being around the cars I have been learning about old cars with going to many car lots lately. It is the first time I ever gone to a car lot with many old rusting away cars that were once so beautiful. It is almost sad to see these once stunning cars from the 50s, 60s, and 70s just rusting away. Being around all those old cars in the lot was one of the most interesting things I

    Reviving Memories
    2008-05-10 13:40:00
Yesterday, Heidi asked me if we should delete a photo blog we started back in 2004 to share pictures with each other of stuff we were doing. At the time, sites like Flickr hadn't taken off. I have an account on there now, but I just don't make a habit of ever looking at the site. I like blogging. It's familiar and I like the way the platform works in terms of posting entries that include text and photos.I told Heidi that the pack-rat in me just couldn't see deleting the blog with all its photographic memories from when we used to post more frequently. She said we each had to agree to post to it at least once a week. So I welcome you to visit Fiercest Calm. For now, the archives are there to browse but you will see some new pictures start to pop up over the next few days. Thank goodness for picture/email posting via cell phone.

    Refreshing Their Memories
    2008-05-02 10:05:00
Last night at Madison Square Garden, the New York Rangers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-0, and avoided elimination in their NHL second round playoff series. The Rangers were down 3-0 in the series to the favored Penguins, and the series returns to Pittsburgh tomorrow night.I love how the media here in New York have mentioned that the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 Islanders (against Pittsburgh) are the only NHL teams to come back from a 3-0 deficit in a seven-game series to win. (And the Islanders almost did it twice that year. They fell behind 0-3 against the Flyers in the next series and fought back to Game 7, only to fall in that game.)But they have very convienently forgotten the last (and most famous) American sports team to come back from 0-3 to win a series of seven games. I have seen NO mentions of it in any of the New York tabloid papers. (I guess they are doing their very best to forget about it.)The above picture should help refresh their memories. It's the gold

Mountain View, CA, April 21, 2008 — Today Eye-Fi, Inc. (www.eye.fi) announced that Eye-Fi users have wirelessly uploaded more than one million photographs to the Web. Every minute, seven photos are wirelessly sent from an Eye-Fi Card to one of Eye-Fi’s 25 online photo-sharing, blogging, printing and social networking Web site partners.“Users are showing us that the Eye-Fi Card is changing the way they share and save photos, and this milestone certainly underscores that,” said CEO Jef Holove. “With the Eye-Fi Card, uploading digital memories is automatic and effortless, so users are sharing photos with friends and family while the memories are still fresh. They aren’t waiting until their memory card is full or they have spare time to transfer pictures from their cameras.”The Eye-Fi Card, the world’s first wireless memory card for digital cameras, was launched in the Fall of 2007 and allows users to wirelessly upload photos from their camera to their PC or Mac, and the W

yesterday started out slowly. ..stayed home, played computer games, surfed the net and watch tv until about 7pm. then, I got out of bed and went to meet up with da brain for dinner at limoncello over on sukhumvit soi 11. we went there once before for italian food about a year ago if I recall. it's amazing what happens in a year. this place went from a 50 seat restaurant to maybe triple that now. the pizza was great. reminds me of north beach pizza in san francisco except the pizza crust is thin here.after dinner, we went to the loooobby to hang out. da brain only stayed for maybe 30 minutes and then he went home with a friend.I stayed on, and had a great time shooting the breeze with a number of lounge lizards. first, the silver surfer, and kilroy the stud. followed by errol flynn and dennis the menace. then, the watcher and mike jagger. much later, hawaiian bill, and hawaiian ben. and at the end of the night, I chatted with keannu reaves a little.talk, talk, talk...confirmed going to

Recovered memories of childhood abuse -From Thrivers
    2008-03-04 14:27:33
Article By:Jane RowanWhy are memories of abuse so often hidden? This is a really hard question for people in recovery from abuse, for therapists, and for researchers. In my case, I didn't recognize one of my early childhood memories as a memory of abuse until I was in my fifties. Then physical memories started to come back to me, memories that led me to know my father had sexually abused me. How could such a big betrayal remain hidden in the back corners of a psyche for years and years? Can we really believe memories that have been hidden so long? It's very common for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to suppress the memories. (Studies say from 30% to 60% of survivors experience loss of memories of abuse.) When the memories come back up, they are often in fragmentary form-a touch, a feeling of nausea, a smell, a fraction of a scene. This fragmentation has a physiological cause. The stress hormones released during frightening events suppress the hippocampus, a part of the brain vital f

Write Back Weekend Monday "Memories, Like The Corners of My Mind"
    2008-02-04 16:30:00
For the first twenty- two years or so of my life, I prided myself on having a good memory. In fact, I find it ironic that having a good memory is one of the things I most remember about my "youth".Not only did I recall things that pertained to me, I also recalled random things, usually related to pop culture trivia. For example, I loved to watch the Dateline blurbs where they'd give you three events and then they'd supply you with three different years those events could have occurred. Even before the years were revealed, I had a very good accuracy rate of guessing within a two or three year range. My mom was always amazed by this since many of the events were before my time. I could never really explain it, but it seemed as if I almost had a photographic memory for pop culture related dates and times. Now if only I had been able to do that for all of my studies in school I would have it made.In the past eight years or so or though I have noticed that this talent has diminished somewha

Memories of the Top Songs of the 1990s - Part 3
    2008-01-15 13:56:00
Here is part 3 of 4 of this crazy list. Kudos to Galoot and Princess Slea for actually completing it!51. Tupac (featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman) “California Love”52. Sugar Ray “Fly”53. Naughty by Nature “O.P.P.” - Every school dance. EVERY.54. Joan Osborne “One of Us” - My Harmony professor, Dr. Hirt, was out sick for a week or so my freshman year in college. When he returned, he entered the classroom all bubbly and carrying a video tape, "I watched a lot of TV last week and saw this video. I started noticing different stuff about its harmonic structure and wanted to share it with you!" He stuck the tape in the player and turned on the television. Joan Osborne, nose-ring and all, appeared on the screen and Dr. Hirt began explaining the chord progressions being used, "It's a very simplistic song really," running over to the piano to demonstrate time to time. "But wait, then you get to the bridge and something very interesting happens! Listen to that dissonance! It's the most interesting thing in the whole song!"55. Fiona Apple “Criminal” - I lost track of how many times I saw this video the summer it was popular. I kept wanting to throw all the people in the video in the shower and yell at them to get clean. 56. L.L. Cool J “Mama Said Knock You Out” - When I saw LL do this song on MTV's Unplugged I wondered "WTF is up with all the deo under his arm??" Apparently, so did the rest of the country.57. Jay-Z featuring Amil and Ja Rule “Can I Get A…”58. Sophie B. Hawkins “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover” - Anne and I chose this as one of our anthem songs about whatever guy we were crushed on in high school. Forget the lesbian undertones to the song, it was all about that teenage longing for that guy you know you will never be able to date.59. Weezer “Buddy Holly” - "What's with these homies dissing my girl? Why do they gotta front??" This came on the radio on my way to the Snowflake Semi-Formal with Sean my senio

Memories of the Top Songs of the 1990s - Part 2
    2008-01-14 16:03:00
Here is Part 2 of 4 of my reminiscing about songs from the 90s:26. Eminem “My Name Is” - "Wiki wiki Slim Shady!" Somewhat unsurprisingly, I heard this for the first time on WBER while driving down List Avenue in Irondequoit while on winter break from college. When I got back, only me and a DJ at WBNY named Cookie Puss knew what was going on when he threw out 'Hi! My name is.." and I answered "What? Who?" 27. Counting Crows “Mr. Jones” I really wanted to hate Counting Crows when this song came out. It was all over the radio and its video was on all the time. It took me a good year to decide that I did like this song, and that would be while I was riding in the backseat of my friend's car, balancing a tupperware bowl of macaroni salad for a kind of camping overnight in Dansville, NY.28. Ricky Martin “Livin’ la Vida Loca”29. Vanilla Ice “Ice Ice Baby” - Julie B. and I took it upon ourselves to memorize this single and would sing it on the bus all the way to Bristol Mountain for ski club. Earlier in the year, at the Homecoming Game, a group of students sitting near me changed the lyrics from "Ice, Ice, Baby too cold!" to "Ice, Ice Baby too cold! Ice, Ice Baby! The blue and gold!" in homage to our school's colors. 30. *NSYNC “Tearin’ Up My Heart” 31. Radiohead “Creep” - The summer I became an avid listener of WBER, this single came out. I would try to beat the heat by escaping to my room, laying on my bed, and letting this song wash over me.32. BLACKstreet “No Diggity”33. Spice Girls “Wannabe” - "(heels clacking through hallway) Ha, ha, ha! Yo! Tell you what I want, what I really really want!" I bought this CD for the first dance I ever DJ-ed at Baldwin-Wallace. Turns out, I'm not much of a dance DJ, but I felt into a guilty pleasure relationship with this song.34. Third Eye Blind “Semi-Charmed Life” - Heather, the GM for WBWC, tried to get me to hang up posters for Third Eye Blind all over the Phys Ed Complex fo

Memories of the Top Songs of the 1990s - Part 1
    2008-01-12 17:26:00
And You Know What Else did this crazy/fabulous post of her memories of the various songs that were featured on VH-1's The Best Songs of the 1990s. As I read, the itch to meme it up came upon me. As I started to write, though, I realized that it would to be a four-part entry. If there's no entry it's because I had nothing worthwhile in terms of a memory or feeling about the song. Here's songs 1-25:01. Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit” – I read about this song before I heard it. A friend of mine wrote me a letter about seeing the video for the first time and how it reminded him of the scene at a college near Toronto. It was like a mild epiphany when I finally saw the video on MTV. I knew that everything was about to change in the music world. 02. U2 “One” – I fully embraced all of “Achtung, Baby” a couple years after it was released. This was just one of the songs my friends and I would listen to as we drove around town 03. Backstreet Boys “I Want It That Way” – My foray back into guilty pleasures solidified when this song came out. I would drive Matt nuts singing along with it, with an ironic gleam in my eye. 04. Whitney Houston “I Will Always Love You” – I have hazy memories of being pelted continuously with this song by the radio. The horror! The horror! 05. Madonna “Vogue” – I was fascinated by the dance moves in the video and wondered just how they managed to do some of them. 06. Sir Mix-A-Lot “Baby Got Back” – Who didn’t know all the words to this diddy? I would sing along in my room, keeping an ear out for my parents in case they decided to peak in and be aghast at that awful rap music. 07. Britney Spears “…Baby One More Time” – Pop music wrapped up in a school girl’s uniform. I wanted to look away, but I couldn’t. 08. TLC “Waterfalls” – This video was constantly on MTV. I watched it once and then flipped the channel every time it was on there after. 9. R.E.M. “Losing My Relig

Putting a price on your memories
    2008-01-09 08:48:01
How much are your memories worth? That what a lot of people ask themselves when they are faced with data recovery. $500? $2000? Yes, it's expensive. How much did that fabulous Europe vacation cost you? Once in a lifetime you say? How many pictures did you take? Amazing. Where did you keep your backup? Uh oh. No backup. A hard drive is not a vault, it is not a digital fortress, it IS vulnerable.

ef - A Tale of Memories
    2008-01-08 15:18:44
Title: ef - A Tale of MemoriesEpisodes: 12Studio: ShaftGenre: SeinenI can honestly say that I liked ef - A Tale of Memories' animation than the story itself. From what I've learned about the anime, the story supposedly centers on three male protagonists: Hiro, Kyosuke and Renji. They each have their own love interests to pursue but they have to face many challenges just to be able to be with the girl they love. Ah and like Myself; Yourself, ef - A Tale of Memories is based on a visual novel entitled ef - A Fairy Tale for Two.ef - A Tale of Memories' plot is easy enough to follow right? Wrong. First of all, Kyosuke, with the amount of parts he's given in the series, falls short on becoming a "main character" - he's more of a supporting character. Next, it seems as if the females of ef, Miyako, Kei and Chihiro, are the protagonists instead of the males. I'm not too sure if this was the intention of the director though.Another thing that I didn't enjoy about ef's plot is that Renji and Chihiro's "story" made me think that they're better off having their own series. Apart from the fact that Kei and Chihiro are twins, there's no other relation between the love triangle of Hiro, Miyako and Kei (with Kyosuke loving Kei on the sidelines), and Chihiro and Renji's relationship. Both sub-plots seem to happen at the same time, simultaneously, but each episode would focus more on one sub-plot, giving little time for the other. I didn't like the discontinuity of each episode in terms of merging both storylines together. It probably would have really been better if they focused on just one sub-plot for the series. If they wanted a dark tone to the series, they should've focused on Renji and Chihiro. Bittersweet melancholy? Miyako and Hiro. Unreciprocated feelings? Kyosuke and Kei.Oh and another confusing thing about ef is that there are two extra characters there: Yu and Yuko. Yu seems to be Chihiro's guardian but it wasn't shown how he came to be Chihiro's guardia

    A Christmas Collage of Memories
    2007-12-31 19:26:00
This Christmas has been such a gift for our family - or I should really say, a lavish pile of gifts that we still haven't finished unwrapping. Moment after moment, indelibly stamped on our hearts as we tug at the ribbons with smiles a mile wide. It has been the Christmas longed for, hoped for, prayed for. The one we wept over so many times in hospitals or while cradling a sick child in our arms as we lamented its loss.Although we started out the Christmas season with pneumonia, strep throat, and ER visits, Christmas itself, was pure undiluted joy. We find ourselves still a bit heady with it, as it's rather unfamiliar territory, but all the while willing ourselves not to be looking around for the threat of a dropping shoe. So we didn't look for one - not even a tiny little peek. We just sat back and soaked it all in like dessicated sponges with our hearts full to overflowing. I can say, just as we have always said, even in the midst of tragedy, that God is good - and breathtakingly faithful. And once again, I am unable to pick a single moment for Melody's weekly "The Gift of Every Moment" post for December. So instead, I will share a virtual collage of some of our favorite moments that twirled into our beautiful Christmas with the individual beauty and whimsy of a flurry of Christmas snowflakes...A beautiful Christmas Eve at Jacqui and Kyle's great grandparent's house - What a joy that I still have my dear grandmother to make Christmas memories with!Christmas morning at Ken's parents house - And Jacqui sneaking an early peek at the stockings!Kyle peeking out the window at his second Christmas morning in the world.Kyle making us laugh after finding an old pair of Grandpa's glasses frames. If it has wheels, it's the best Christmas present ever! At least in Kyle's book.Late Christmas Morning at my parent's house. Jacqui singing happy birthday to Jesus with her cousins, James and Jonathan. The cake was actually a gluten-free coffee cake I had made so

    Memories That Linger On
    2007-12-17 10:23:00
By Carlos Benito CamachoAlthough I was born and grew up in the city, I spent fragments of my life in the country. Once, when I was very young boy, my mother became ill and could not look after the six of us kids. While my brothers and sisters were taken care of by relatives who lived in the city, I was sent to the country to stay at an uncle’s.Uncle Miguel lived on small farm, which was about 75 miles from the city. He was a tenant farmer who worked a 50-acre rectangular piece of fertile land. Like my mother, he was born and grew up in the country and was a devoted catholic who attended church every Sunday. He was married to Aunt Jane; a woman who was half his age. Since they were a childless couple, it was deemed convenient that I stayed there for a whole year. I did not like the idea of having to spend such a long time away from my brothers and sisters, in some remote place where I had never been before. But they said I had to go when my uncle’s old pick-up truck stopped out in front. My arrival in that exotic place was an unnerving experience. I was scared to death by those scrawny, rural dogs which welcomed the urban alien with growls and barks. The first days were awful, as I was homesick all the time. Hidden in some nook of that house, I would cry silently in sobs. My uncle solemn and distant presence was no solace to me, but my Aunt Jane was. She was a warm lady who cheered me up, talking to me as she smiled, giving me cozy hugs which fed my childish heart with sprinklings of mirth. As my uncle was away all day long, working in the field, I spent most of the time with my dearest Aunt Jane. She worked hard, too, doing the household chores, but she always found time to fit me in, taking me for a walk to the river or giving me a ride on one of the horses. She got up at dawn everyday, milked the cows, made the fire with wood in the out-kitchen, and then she made breakfast. When Uncle Miguel left for work, she would go over to wake me up. Although I was already

    Favorite Christmas Memories
    2007-12-03 18:31:00
I was tagged by this meme by the incredibly talented Karen (check out her etsy store!) and pass it on to anyone who is interested. Yes, I have a complex about memes and telling other people to participate. Sorry, I'm weird like that. The challenge is this: List your favorite childhood Christmas gift, your favorite gift that you received as an adult, and a gift that you would like to receive in the future. The problem is, I really can't think of "favorite gifts." I've been racking my brain for days but am coming up blank. But then again, I'm one of those kinds of people who liked the "Box of Love" idea so obviously presents aren't that big of a deal to me.I'll tell you my favorite Christmas memories instead.I'm ten years old and wake up on Christmas morning feeling a bit groggy. Nevertheless, I stumble down to the tree with everyone else and sit on the couch, waiting to open presents. A few minutes later, I realize something terrible is about to happen and run behind the

    Brazilian Flavours and Memories
    2007-10-25 05:52:00
When we first moved to America the expats tended to socialize together. This trend continued throughout my childhood especially with an international school forming the basis of our social background in Belgium. Dad played football (soccer) on a team mostly made up of expats and they were ruthless! They always won as they had a great mix of people from all over South and central America with some tough Europeans to boot. The Americans had never seen anything like it and they won season after season. One of his friends on the team was Brazilian and I quickly became friends with his daughter who was my age. As our friendship grew I found myself being invited over for meals. I had never experienced food like this. Her Mom was a phenomenal cook. At first I was a bit nervous, the only beans I had ever had before came from a can and were red. I tended to stick with the rice. A sweet, peppery pilaf that made my mouth water. I always wondered why our rice never tasted like that and indeed annoyed my mother by constantly asking her! Eventually my trust grew and I learned to love the black beans. A few years ago I figured out the rice. I knew there was onion and garlic involved, but something was missing. It was only on my return to Ireland that I rediscovered ground white pepper, which is often what you find on restaurant tables here. That was it! The rice is perfect now. The beans I'm not so sure about. I read up on Feijoada, which is the national dish of Brazil and consists of black beans and various cuts of meat, but this wasn't what Sonja cooked. I think maybe she did a lighter weekday version and what I have come up with is almost as good, but not quite! But hey, at least I nailed the rice!Be forewarned you may need separate bedrooms and a colon cleanse after eating these! ;-) Brazilian Inspired Black Beans and Rice (serves 6-8) For the Beans: 1 lb black beans, soaked overnight* 1lb bacon**, chopped 1/2 lb Kielbasa, chopped*** 1 large onion, finel

Neuroscientists find another way to erase long term memories
    2007-08-22 11:41:46
A study in June that was revealed in the Journal of Psychiatric Research used an 'amnesia' drug to 'dampen' the memories of trauma victims. The drug they used was called propranolol - a drug normally used to treat hypertension, but causes memory problems. A new study published in Science by neuroscientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehobot, Israel, uses a protein to wipe out long-term memories in rats. Yadin Dudai and Reut Shema are trying to show that memories can last for years or even a lifetime, but they are constantly maintained by an active process that can be disrupted. First they trained rats to avoid the sweet smell of sacharin by giving them a chemical that made them sick whenever they were exposed to it. They quickly learned to avoid it. They then injected the rat cortex with a protein called ZIP. ZIP silences an enzyme called PKM-zeta, which is believed to be the key to perpetuating long-term memory. After the injection, the rats lost their mem

“I’m Phil Rizzuto for the Money Store” is one of those catchphrases that will stick with me until I die. It is right there with “Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down,” “don’t squeeze the Charmin,” and “let Lionel Playworld turn that frown upside-down.” I really never knew Phil Rizzuto was famous for anything else until today when, tragically I learned he had passed away at age 89. Turns out he was more famous as a Yankee’s shortstop and sports announcer than as a loan specialist spokesman. Whodathunkit?Today’s post is half morbid and half nostalgic: first the morbid part. With Merv Griffin passing away yesterday and Phil Rizzuto today, who do you think will be the next famous death? I am not hoping for another famous death, but these things do always happen in threes. Personally, I have yet to recover from the “one-two” punch that was Sammy Davis, Jr and Jim Henson going hours apart. If I were a betting man, I would place my money on LiLo. Fo

Chapter Twenty Five: Of Waking Memories
    2007-08-06 00:49:00
James awoke into a world of light so bright that he had to squint just to be able to see anything at all. All around him was a vast nothingness that led nowhere. There were no walls, no ground, and no sky. He wondered for a moment if he were in heaven and if he had died. The pain that he had been expecting wasn’t there and when he brought his hands to his face he could clearly see that no gashes or scars were there. It was as if he were completely untouched, further adding to his fear that he had in fact died and gone to heaven. Then someone appeared as a faded shade of gray. The figure walked leisurely, only fully becoming visible when the two of them were mere feet apart. The face of the man before him smiled warmly beneath a sandy blonde beard that hung at his neckline. Two faded green eyes looked down, further adding to the warmth of the smile. Then a hand extended. James took it and stood. No sensations came to him. No lightheadedness; n

    Walsh's passing stirs memories
    2007-07-31 07:08:04
I would be remiss if I didn't offer some thoughts on the passing of the legendary Bill Walsh Monday at the age of 75. There are many others who can more eloquently detail Walsh's revolutionary impact on how football is played today. I will let them describe Walsh's genius. From the perspective of a Giants fan, what I remember is that he built the 49ers into three-time Super Bowl champs largely during Bill Parcells era as Giants coach. In the late 1980s these two teams, the 49ers and Giants, were in many ways what the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts are to today's NFL. These are the teams that were the standard-bearers in that period of the NFL. One of my favorite Giants games ever has to be the 49-3 thrashing Big Blue put on Walsh's 49ers in the opening round of the 1986 playoffs. That, of course, started the Giants on the road to their first Super Bowl title. One of the moments in Giants history that is burned into my brain is Leonard Marshall nearly b

    Memories
    2007-07-01 20:42:00
The Fourth of July used to be a holiday I really enjoyed. Not that I don't enjoy it now, mind you.Its just a little less excited. Back when I was a kid, we used to spend all day at the lake, getting sun burned and playing around. Then, we'd have a picnic and change into long sleeves and jeans to watch the fireworks from the dock.I don't know when that changed. I sure do miss it. Those were some of my best memories as a kid.

Memories Of The Boston Red Sox 1967....Part Four
    2007-06-15 14:51:00
As Peter said to me recently, I think it would be more interestingfor the readers to just recall some very specialmemories and not worry so much about the chronology ofthat very special season, circa 1967. The year thebaseball world woke up and noticed the Boston Red Soxonce again. After so many years. No Ted, just Yaz, and so many others! And as you will read inthe upcoming paragraphs by our blog buddy Jay,there were so many teammates who overachieved and did everything possible to march not only to a first place finish in the AL,(remember, there were NO divisions) but to one darnvictory away from winning it all. They captured our hearts and our souls!! Read on for more ofJay's thoughts, priceless memories of what was, and whatmight be again. But it will never be the same as 1967.We go back 40 years, with smiles of joy....."To that end, the Impossible Dream team had an arrayof vagabond players, retreads and just plain averageballplayers who did something special. It's Friday, and that means more 1967 memories of that special season.....1967, courtesy of my friend, Jay T. Here is his second installment of 1967 magic. You can acess part one by going back in the archives to May 25th. Thank you Jay, and I'll be back with a quick word afterwards. Take it away, Jay!***********************************************************************As I said earlier, before 1967 I had no "favorite team". All any kid had was Mickey Mantle and the Yankees, and I wanted desperately to be different and HATE the Yankees. I did not want to like a team that won all the time. (To this day I hate the Celtics, the Montreal Canadiens and the Green Bay Packers, all of whom dominated their respective sports back in the 60's). It isn't like I went looking for a team.......I just knew I didn't like the Yankees. So as that famous season unfolded it really was the last thing I expected. The Red Sox were always at the bottom of the league and there was no reason to think 1967

    Sharpening Memories Through Sleep
    2007-05-21 06:16:06
The human mind is a part of the human body that operates all throughout, even without body movement from the various parts such as the arms and legs. Brains functions continuously and strains which come in the form of headaches and migraines are a certainty, especially when people have to input everything needed for them to be able to think and make decisions at certain moments. Sleep is the resort that most brains can turn to whenever the need for rest and regeneration of strength is needed by the human brain. Many people choose to forego resting or sleeping, choosing to maximize their time and lean more towards being productive than resting. However, without sufficient sleep, brains and bodies will reach a point where they may break down and succumb to potential illness and shortcomings. People become haggard and tend to forget some things in an instant. This is perhaps one aspect that sleep has which people should start considering. Sleep recharges various parts of the body and t

    The Memories Of...
    2006-08-13 17:05:00
Every so often I put out flyers, place ads & post my card to bulletin boards and the like in hopes of purchasing vintage clothing from estates or downsizers before it hits the trash bin or Goodwill pile. Some time ago my husband, always on the lookout for me also, came home from work with a photo album and said the clothing & effects of the subject of the album might be coming my way as she had recently passed on. They never materialized sad to say, as I would have loved to see just a few of the things this seemingly colorful woman posessed. And not just for the usual mercenary, self serving reasons. Although I really know nothing about her but her name ( I believe that's her on the left, top pic) something tells me she was probably something of a sentimental saver, with an obvious artistic, flamboyant flair (a professional dancer) and funloving, adventuous nature. It's nice sometimes to have the opportunity to know something about the vintage items you collect or wear and to whom it belonged to and what kind of life they led. The vintage backstory so to speak. And it would have been interesting to see what this lady's wardrobe held, what she had chosen to save. I have no idea if it was kept, sold or tossed. Ah well....Still, while organizing & straightening my office/workroom for the umpteenth time this year I came across the album, flipped through it again & tucked it back on the shelf. For some reason I just couldn't trash it - the symbolism of that gesture was just a bit too much.
