| | By: Día-Noticias en Cauquenes.tk | | |
| | The Best Parts Of Having A Mental Illness | | 2008-08-18 22:45:00 | | This is a repost (is that the word?) from a while back. Right now all of my attention is focused on finding a new place to live by the end of the month. Hopefully tomorrow I will wake up to good news and the search will be over. Anyway I attempted to find the positives of having a mental illness in this post. The 2.7 million self improvement websites I crossed today on stumbleupon in the last couple of days all said the best action a person can take is to focus on the positive so lets give it a shot.1. Finding out who your true friends are. Nothing makes people run away faster then the mention of a mental illness. At the beginning everyone sticks around but as time progresses the number gets smaller and smaller until your real friends are left.2. Finding out what your truly capable of. I never knew how much inner strength or will power I truly had until I became sick. After going to your absolute bottom and some how finding the strength to still fight you find out who you truly a... | | By: UNTREATABLE' S BLOG - Borderline Personality Self | | |
| | Mental Health Blog Directory Update | | 2008-08-14 22:04:00 | | Well the directory recently passed thirty blogs which is pretty good and hopefully will continue to grow. One of the main concerns I had before starting this mini project is a lot of mental health blogs tend to disappear as the stress of writing about your personal demons can get to be too much after awhile. A few of the blogs on the list are on hiatus but I believe and hope they will be restarted in the near future. There have been a couple of blogs that have been rejected outright due to publishing self harm photos which is something I firmly do not believe in and a couple more were asked to write me when there blog hit a month old just to make sure the writer was committed(the nice way) to the process. Anyway below is how the Mental Health Blog Directory stands now and the invitation to join is still open so if you or someone you know that runs a personal mental health blog leave me a comment. Take care.(In order of appearance)1. Family Times - I write about my large family,... | | By: UNTREATABLE' S BLOG - Borderline Personality Self | | |

| | July's Mental Health Report | | 2008-07-25 11:45:00 | | Well I have an appointment next week so might as well use this time to get the monthly report ready (which I have not turned in since April or so).Weight - Pretty much the same since last month. Since starting the Effexor I have been exercising less but at the same time my appetite has gone out the window.Medication - A) Effexor - one week at 37.5mg and the rest of the month at 75mgB) Seroquel - three times a day at a 100mg per shot, have been using the "extra" 50mg rarely as the fog is pretty thick alreadyC) Temazapam - 30mg at nightMedication Side effects - Lack of appetite, tend to disappear into zombie land a lot more quickly as of late but that seems to be improving as my body gets use to the Effexor.Self Harm - The old demon resurfaced for a bit during the second week of taking Effexor. Simple reason would be I needed to prove to myself I was still capable of feeling something and also I needed a way to grab onto reality for a bit. Being self harm free for the last couple of w... | | By: UNTREATABLE' S BLOG - Borderline Personality Self | | |
| | Ghosts Spectres Phantoms: Or Mental Projections | | 2008-07-25 10:33:00 | | Just one of my side stepping posts I occasionally do. And PLEASE! For the love of anything you may hold sacred, don't take anything in this post seriously. It's just something I dreamed up on the spur of the moment, to toss into the ring about ghosts and the like. It's a very "way out in left field" ideal, theory, whathaveyou, to kick around for fun in a discussion. So let us begin, shall we?Just the other night, our video office was reviewing some surveillance tapes. During the tape review, a large cart loaded down with product, which was sitting stationary on one side of an aisle, slowly traversed itself across the aisle. A distance of approximately five feet. The cart had been unattended prior to the movement. Without outside influence that we could see, simply moved under it's own power.Finding that odd, we dispatched a couple officers to the scene to have a look around. We in fact did determine that the cart was sitting on a very gradual, almost unnoticeable slope, that led down to... | | By: Hoopy Frood Dude | | |

"It seems to be an indication of the need for spiritual nourishment, something that College members are not finding easily in the outside world," says Dr Sarah Eagger, chair of the Spirituality Group.Dr Eagger, consultant psychiatrist at St Charles Hospital, London, said her daily meditation practice was as important in her everyday work as her medical training. "A strong spiritual practice really comes into its own when you are faced with a very distressed patient, while also coping with the pressures of working in teams under immense stress, and then having to spend ... | | By: Spiritual Village
| | The Mental Health Directory | | 2008-07-04 09:35:00 | | Well the results have been pretty good so far but hopefully more people will add their blog to the list. The only real criteria that I have been watching out for is blogs that are basically brand new. Running a mental health blog does take its toll so a number of blogs do not make it past their first month or twentieth post so I am a bit reluctant to add them to the list. Anyway the traffic has been alright on this page and hopefully it has sent some more readers their way. I have noticed that those who have taken the time to write a description seem to be getting the majority of the traffic. So those writers who I transferred over from my blog roll please send in a better description then the few words I used to describe your blog. I am hoping this directory will continue to grow so if you know anyone who should be on this list please send them my way. Below is what the current directory looks like. | | Weight Loss - The Mental Process | | 2008-07-04 04:35:30 | | When you go on a diet and decide you want to lose some weight, most people think “I’ll stop eating so much, maybe do a bit of exercise and be my ideal weight in just a few days”. Sadly, these people end up disappointed and usually heavier than when they started.Dieting is not just a physical process but a mental one too.If you do not have the mental processes right then your diet will be a struggle and possibly fail. By having the right mental approach and being in control of your brain you can turbo charge your way to your ideal weight. So how do you get in control of your brain then? Before I reveal that, you need to know that you are made up of two parts. You have your conscious mind, which is your ego – the part that chatters on all day. Then you have your sub-conscious, which is the part that grows your hair, your nails, pumps blood around your body and so on.This is a very powerful thing to know, because most people fail in their diets because they do not have the sub-conscio... | | By: tips n trick diets success | | |
| | How To Help Someone With Mental Illness | | 2008-07-01 11:01:00 | | *This is an older post that I brought back to the surface for a couple of reasons (1) Today is a holiday so it would not be very patriotic to work on Canada's Day(2) Freaking Effexor headache which was expected but still rather annoying and is screwing up my concentration.Anyway enough with the excuses and on with the postHow To Help Someone With Mental IllnessOver the course of this blog I have received numerous emails about people who are in a desperate situation trying to help someone in their life who is not mentally well. Unfortunately this is a difficult place to be in as there is not a lot that can be done but that does not mean it is impossible.1. Change. The best medication, the best programs, the best therapy and the best doctors in the world mean absolutely nothing if the person who is sick does not want to change. This change needs to come from within the person and not the result of wanting to please others around him or her. I have seen to many people whose treatment ... | | By: UNTREATABLE' S BLOG - Borderline Personality Self | | |
| | June Mental Health Report | | 2008-06-26 23:20:00 | | I should be sleeping at the moment but I have hesitated taking my pills. Don't tell the doctor but after spending the day lost in the Seroquel fog my brain taking off at full speed is a rather joyous occasion. Anyway I have an appointment early next week so I might as well get this month's report ready. I wrote up last month but never gave it to him as he pissed me off the month before so I decided I was not going to cooperate and shot myself in the foot at the same time ....
Medication -
Morning (roughly 12pm)- 100mg of Seroquel
Afternoon (4pm) - 50mg of Seroquel - this is suppose to be as needed and apparently I need it everyday at 4pm
Supper/Dinner (call it what you want)somewhere between 6pm and 7pm - 100mg of Seroquel
Bedtime (normally I take it around 11:00pm unless something is good on TV) 100mg of Seroquel + 30mg of Temazaepam. It takes roughly an hour and a half to kick in.

| | The Making Of A Mental Health Professional | | 2008-06-24 11:58:00 | | I was thinking of all the common characteristics that make up a good mental health worker in my opinion and came up with the following list:
1. Real Life Experience - No book has ever been written that can truly cover what it is like to be at your absolute bottom, to fight for your own life, to understand the emotional turmoil that shows up when the people who are suppose to love you turn around and stab you in the back. There is good reasons why a high number of drug and alcohol counselors are recovered addicts.
2. The Ability To Empathize - Basically to have a heart. If you are unable to feel what the client is expressing then you have no business being in this field. I am not a book or a diagnosis but a person who would love to be cured but even more important I need you to understand where I am coming from and what I am feeling.
3. The Ability To Think Outside Of The Box - Not everyone with depression or any other disorder is going to respond to the same treatment. This fie... | | By: UNTREATABLE' S BLOG - Borderline Personality Self

| | | Weird Mental Tricks | | 2008-06-16 00:52:00 | | Every once in a while an idea will come through my head that makes so much sense that it takes forever to get rid of it. About a year ago I was thinking what I should do in terms of a future career as I am not sure I can ever go back to Social Work or at least not in the same capacity that I once did. Anyway this idea came out of nowhere that my new purpose in life was to write basically a modern day bible or at least something similar. This delusion went on for a long time and it somehow reached a point where I was having mock interviews in my head and I think Oprah called this new project of mine the ultimate guideline to a happy life or something close to it. Within a week I was all ready and set to start this project then bang it was gone.Paranoia is a royal pain in the ass and it is one of the worst parts of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. | | Motivation's Effect on Mental and Physical Health | | 2008-06-14 18:51:28 | | Many studies have been done to research the effects of motivation and mental health. As the implications of helping those with negative self-esteem, depression and anxiety are immense this is certainly an area of research that deserves a great deal of attention.Psychology Online reports on a study investigating the differences between INTERNAL and EXTERNAL MOTIVATION. The report states that "Although our society is largely extrinsically-motivated by external rewards such as money, fame and power, research has indicated those who are intrinsically-motivated by inner desires for creativity, fulfillment and inner satisfaction are psychologically healthier and happier."How can this help you?The study of health psychology seeks to understand how our ability to cope with stress can help us to prevent illness and promote health. Some of these coping mechanisms are naturally inborn but may be taught to those who lack them. | | Mental Health Journey | | 2008-06-13 10:19:00 | | With my blog being featured over at The Experience Project I think this is a good time to reintroduce myself. Many of the major areas of my life have been detailed to a certain degree throughout the brief history of this blog but I will use this post as a way to summarize my journey so far.I have been dealing with depression for as long as I can remember. My family history has mental illness on both sides going back for generations. Chances are I was depressed the day I came out of the womb and have been unable to get rid of this silent monster since.Self harm started when I was seven or eight with the intention of punishing myself so I would be a "good" child and maybe people in my life would finally leave me alone. Needless to say this did not work. When I was twelve or so I tried to end my life and somewhere in the process I realized that as the blood left my body a sort of cleansing occurred which seemed to make me feel better. | | How Much Has "Junk Food" Affected The Mental And Physical Stability Of Our Children? | | 2008-05-22 10:48:00 | | What are you willing to do to stop this madness among the "junk food" that we have allowed to infiltrate beyond our sense of quality nutrition? I know because I fell into the trap years ago with my children and myself. I worked two shifts or two jobs to support my four children after divorce and quickie meals and quick snacks between jobs were my destiny of early good health destruction. Now I am concerned about other children as well as my own grandchildren.Evaluate this statement: "In addition to eating foods that are grown on devitalized soils, far too many people are living almost exclusively on junk foods that have little or no nutrition, regardless of the soil. Let this be clearly stated: Junk food causes criminality. A number of people have said this, but few have heard it.Vast numbers of kids today are not eating good, wholesome foods as nature provided them but are living off of Coke and candy, and other fast foods that have little or no nutrition. | | Music And Mental Illness | | 2008-05-21 07:47:00 | | Chances are if I am at the computer there is music playing. For whatever the reason I always seem to need something playing in the background in order to concentrate. Anyway I have decided to compose a list of music videos that are tied into some aspect of mental illness. YouTube has been weird lately and I keep running into the message "This video is unavailable in your country" which I am guessing has to do with copyright laws but like I said I am guessing. Anyway on with the list.1. Matchbox 20 - Unwell2. Johnny Cash/Nine Inch Nails - Hurt- This piece is a Nine Inch Nails song that Johnny Cash redid wonderfully. 3. Counting Crows - Round here4. | | | idol of mental attachment | | 2008-05-07 18:20:55 | | In meditation, everything depends on thought. | | Mental Tricks | | 2008-05-01 11:00:00 | | I have a dentist appointment in a couple of hours and like I have mentioned before it tends to bring up my anxiety level so I need to figure out a way to get through the session. The best way I know how is to just dissociate through out the process where basically my brain takes a vacation from reality for awhile so mentally I do not need to deal with what is taking place.Through my life I have created a couple of make believe personas to take over when the situation is to much to handle. Basically I can go to this other place and not deal with reality for awhile. When entering this world I do not realize 99% of what is going on and with today's dentist appointment the time has come to use this trick again. The key to events that you know are coming is to get into this place long before the situation is going to occur as it is difficult to pull out of thin area when the time arises. | | By: Danta's Articles | | |

| | | The Problems In Running A Mental Health Blog | | 2008-04-19 10:00:00 | | Over the last few days I have visited quite a few mental health blogs and a number of them are either really slowing down in the number of post or have announced that they are taking a hiatus. I think that every mental health blog tells a unique story and can go along way in the fighting the stigma of mental illness but there are consequences to maintaining a personal mental health site.1. I find to really connect with the reader it is important to share all of the facts and the emotions regarding a specific event or events. The problem with this is focusing on the past can bring up emotions that may have not been properly dealt with and send the monster back into motion. On more then one occasion I have started a post that I felt was important to cover but realized half way through that this was not a good idea for me mentally.2. The reason for posts on this site to suddenly switch to a poetry day or information about this blogs performance is mentally I need to take a break from d... | | By: UNTREATABLE' S BLOG - Borderline Personality Self | | |

The body is looked upon as the primary instrument that enables us to work and evolve in the world, and so a Yoga student treats it with great care and respect. Breathing techniques are based on the concept that breath is the source of life in the body. The Yoga student gently increases breath control to improve the health and function of both body and mind. Just as your body temperature increases to fight infection, the increased room temperature will help improve T-cell function and the right functioning of the immune system. The most important plus points, perhaps, are the mental health benefits. You will enjoy more willpower through restraint, self-discipline, focus and willpower. Besides, the effects on the stress in one's life and how one manages... | | By: Yoga Training

| | Mental Health Days | | 2008-03-27 05:39:00 | | I think I invented these things. A mental health day. It’s a day when you just take time off from everything and take care of you AND you don’t feel bad about it. I try to incorporate them into my life on a pretty regular basis because I think that mental health is as important as our physical health. For my mental health days, I have even in the past, skipped the exercise. That is changing though. From now on, I am not skipping on the exercise because somehow, I have done well lately and my runs aren’t killing me, I am feeling way more flexible and there is no way that I am stopping and possibly dealing with a setback now.
You see, I have exactly 6 pounds to lose to hit my original goal. That is when I promised myself a new wardrobe. Queenie likes to shop. A. Lot. I figured that 50 pounds would have me needing new clothes badly. It is amazing to me how long you can drape yoga pants over a rapidly shrinking body though. Elastic and drawstrings are my best friends r... | | By: Our Wicked Weighs

| | Really funny jokes-Mental hospital | | 2008-03-21 02:20:00 | | A mental hospital was critically overcrowded. The doctor decides to get all the patients seated in one large room to conduct a test to see how many they discharge that day.At the front of the room the Doctors took some chalk and drew a full size door on a Blackboard and offered an ice cream to any patient who could open the door. There was a mad rush for the door with the patients scratching and clawing at the door and the handle. The doctors were disappointed, until they noticed a single patient who remained in his chair and was quietly chuckling to himself as he watched his fellow patients.Encouraged that at least one patient could be discharged today, the doctors asked him why he wasn't trying to open the door. The patient, who could no longer contain his laughter, shouted, "I've got the key!"... | | By: Really funny jokes | | |
| | A Mental Health Check Up | | 2008-03-14 14:12:00 | | I guess it is time that I take a peak at how I am doing mentally to figure out what the next steps should be and if any major changes need to take place.Mood Swings - It has been a long week and it is really beginning to show through. One second I am enjoying the experience the next I am trying to run away from it. Losing my temper way to quickly over the smallest things is never a good sign as it usually means the depression monster is beginning to gain more and more control. My brain is so use to the antidepressants to give it that extra kick that I am beginning to think that it is time to go back down that road again as the last two months without it have not exactly been pleasant. The question is which one. I still have dental work to be done so that basically gets rid of the MAOI class but problem is I have been through most of the others and none of them lasted long. It might be of no surprise, but government medics have found that the longer soldiers stay in combat, the more likely they are to have mental problems. Soldiers with three or more combat tours aren’t getting enough down time between deployment, according to the results from the just-released 2007 Mental Health Advisory Team study. The team surveyed 2,300 soldiers returning from their third tour from Iraq and nearly 700 more from A... | | By: PhreQuency Ent. | | |

That could make it unlikely for Brit's lawyers to win a bid to regain visitation in a therapeutic setting, the Web site said.On Monday, Spears left the deposition in her custody battle nearly two-and-a-half hours after arriving at the offices of Federline's attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan, People.com and TMZ reported.Spears' deposition has been an emotionally difficult experience ... | | By: Celebrity Rag

| | Still Don't Think that Theism is a Mental Disorder? | | 2008-01-13 00:45:55 | |
Wow. A whole barrage of nonsense came at us in the past two weeks or so. First off...a man cuts off his own hand after seeing the Mark of the Beast on it. With a circular saw. And then microwaves it. And then calls the authorities. A quote from one of the sherriff's deputies states, "That kind of mental illness is just sad." I couldn't agree more.
Now, I know what you guys are going to say--"It's not BECAUSE of religion." Actually, I don't think that a case could be made either way. Was he likely vulnerable to delusional behavior? Yeah, I'll concede that one. The fact that religion is unique in its ability to seep into the crevices of your mind so pervasively that this theme plays out in our society over and over again isn't addressed by that statement, though. How do the appeasers and framers answer that? Maybe it only manifests itself in those already prone to mental illness, but isn't that akin to excusing and perpetuating a belief system that preys on the weak? What exactly is it that causes atheists to feel this compulsion to cover for a malevolent, archaic belief that has caused mothers to kill their children, countless cases of child abuse, seemingly endless wars and violence, and self-mutilation and flagellation that can be traced back to the very foundation of the religion?

Your job, therefore, is to keep your self-esteem high and positive on a continuing basis. | | Commuting by Bike: Hazardous to your mental health (?) | | 2007-12-11 09:44:00 | | Yesterday, I decided to punish myself with a bike commute to and from work. I use the word "punish" because I've been quite a sissy-boy in the "cold weather riding" department. Resolving to ride the fixed gear bike to work 2-3 times a week, all winter long, I decided to pick one of the nastier days as a way to "break myself in". "Future rides to work won't seem as bad" I reasoned.. Well.. aside from a quick fall on black ice, my ride to work was quite enjoyable, all 9 miles of it. The ride home.. a different story.. It wasn't the darkness that ruined it, it wasn't the cold wind or the damp drizzle or the slick roads.. It was the people who I shared the road with. Quittin' time does something to New Englanders I think. Getting home seems to be a bigger urgency than getting to work, that's for damn sure. A motorist driving an enormous pick up truck- the kind with four rear wheels and four doors- thoughtfully slowed to my pace, lowered his window, wagged his finger and yelled at me to "GET ON THE SIDEWALK!". On at least three other occasions, motorists blared their horns at me, and then once they could get past me, gunned the throttle while shaking their heads in disapproval. I can't read their moving lips too well, but their "body language" makes it pretty clear that feathering their brakes for a few seconds while basking in the warmth and comfort of their car, in order to avoid pasting the road with my shivering body parts, , is not appreciated.. at all. Mentally, it really takes the wind out of your sails. You know you're doing something good for the body, for the mind and even for the environment, but those who can't afford to be delayed for 5 seconds by a human life perched precariously on top of a 20 pound machine going 20 miles an hour through the darkness on top of frozen asphalt, really make it hard to be optimistic about anything to do with PEOPLE. Enough said. If you're a motorist and en... | | By: Amerikan Turk
| | The Connection between Mind and Mental Health | | 2007-12-05 02:16:00 | | RSS CrossRef Search and visit Healthlines: Genes. Which are the benificial effects of exercise?Mental Health charities in the UK already back exercise programmes as a way of lifting depression. While the link between exercise and improved mood is well known, the reasons behind it are not fully understood. The latest research focuses on an area of the brain called the hippocampus, which is already established as a target for antidepressant drugs. Yale University experts developed a test to see which genes in this region were made more active during exercise, and highlighted one called VGF. This gene is linked to a 'growth factor' chemical involved in the development of nerve cells. The natural 'high' produced by exercise could one day be available in a pill that targets a gene in our brains. Exercise boost Mind and Body. Now we are aware of a specific gene which has anti-depressant effects. To test the health benefits of the newly discovered gene, the researchers administered concentrated doses of VGF to one group of mice and blocked the VGF gene in the other group. The mice who received the VGF doses exhibited the same effects produced by a powerful anti-depressant drug, while blocking the VGF gene caused the mice to experience symptoms of depression.Ask a marathon runner about 'runners high' and he'll tell you that it's the pleasant feeling that he experiences sometimes during and after running. Moderate exercise can produce the same effect. A little known fact is that this is a reaction to a natural body function that occurs during exercise called endorphin release. Beta-Endorphin is a neurohormone that is released into the bloodstream from the pituitary gland. Endorphins attach themselves to specific receptor sites in the brain that affect our perception of well being and in the extreme, euphoria. It’s the body’s reward for doing something healthy like exercise.RSS CrossRef Search and visit Healthlines: Hormonen. What is the connection between Runners ... | | By: The Health Archive | | |

| | 10 Step Mental Exercise that Will Reduce Panic | | 2007-11-07 15:49:00 | | When you feel a panic attack coming on, usually everything escalates very quickly. With or without noticing it, your mind begins to race and quickly the negative thoughts overwhelm you furthering the panic. Negative thoughts usually start off with “What if…” “I should be able to ….” “I have to…” or other critical comments like “I’m so weak” or victimization “Its hopeless, why bother”. These thoughts are called Negative Self Talk. The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund J. Bourne lists a quick explanation of what Self Talk is and how it works: "It is so automatic and subtle you don't notice it or the effect it has on your moods and feelings. It appears in telegraphic form- one short word or image ("Oh no!) contains a whole series of thoughts, memories, or associations.Anxious self-talk is typically irrational but almost always sounds like the truth.Negative self-talk perpetuates avoidance.Self-talk can initiate or aggravate a panic attack.Negative self-talk is a series of negative bad habits. (You have to reprogram your brain to say helpful uplifting confident talk to remove the negative thoughts)" Recognizing that you are doing this is a huge step towards learning to manage your anxiety. The next huge step is successfully slowing your thoughts down, analyzing them, and then reprogramming your mind to think differently. This will greatly reduce the amount and size of panic attacks you have. It helps me stop panic attacks dead in their tracks probably about 80% of the time. So here is the exercise: I have many posts where I outline this exercise for myself to help me cope with whatever panic attack I may be having at that time. It is extremely helpful for me to go back and read them when the same situation appears again in the future. I encourage you to read a couple to get some ideas or more details on how to fill this out. When you feel panic coming on, take some deep breaths.Ask you... | | By: The Reality of Anxiety | | |

| | Mental Health of Healers | | 2007-10-22 07:40:53 | | Alcoholics Anonymous has revolutionized the way alcoholics are perceived by their peers. The shame of having a problem has been made much easier by the respect given to those who change their lives by giving up an addiction. After I came to recovery in 1976, my daughter told me that she had been telling the neighbors that I was an alcoholic. I was somewhat surprised because I didn't know my neighbors very well. So I sat down and asked her to tell me what an alcoholic is. She said,"Oh, Mommy, you know. It is someone who doesn't drink and smiles a lot." The only alcoholics she knew were in AA. In the early 1980's, the adult child/codependency recovery solutions began to appear in many reading sources. The media figures who helped launch the recovery movement were Phil Donahue and Oprah Winfrey. Betty Ford brought a high level of acceptance to the recovery field as well as a treatment center that worked. Codependency Anonymous was started in 1986. | | World Mental Health Day | | 2007-10-10 12:48:00 | | Today is World Mental Health Day as initiated the World Federation for Mental Health and has been celebrated annually since 1992. The theme for this year is "Mental health in a changing world: the impact of culture and diversity"."Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”The culture you are surrounded in greatly determines the way in which you deal with your symptoms. However, mental health effects every country no matter where you live. According to the WHO website:Mental, neurological and behavioural disorders are common to all countries and cause immense suffering. People with these disorders are often subjected to social isolation, poor quality of life and increased mortality. These disorders are the cause of staggering economic and social costs. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide are affected by mental, behavioural, neurological and substance use disorders. For example, estimates made by WHO in 2002 showed that 154 million people globally suffer from depression and 25 million people from schizophrenia; 91 million people are affected by alcohol use disorders and 15 million by drug use disorders. A recently published WHO report shows that 50 million people suffer from epilepsy and 24 million from Alzheimer and other dementias. In addition to the above figures, many other disorders affect the nervous system or produce neurological sequelae. Projections based on a WHO study show that worldwide in 2005, 326 million people suffer from migraine; 61 million from cerebrovascular diseases; 18 million from neuroinfections or neurological sequelae of infections. Number of people with neurological sequelae of nutritional disorders and neuropathies (352 million) and neurological sequelae secondary to injuries (170 million) also add substantially to the above ... | | By: The Reality of Anxiety | | |
| | Eight Recovery Tips for Mental Healing | | 2007-09-27 14:33:00 | | Of all the techniques that I've used since 1976, the following eight techniques have been my basic mainstay for my mental health: 1. Upon awakening, recite or write a gratitude list. Always begin with the gift of breath. Without breath, we'd have no life. My spirit is sorebellious at times that many days my gratitude list included only my breath. But having gratitude for even one thing was a growth from having nogratitude. Do 5 minutes of deep breathing-relish the feeling good lungs gives you. 2. Living with a positive mind is a continual discipline. Remember your thoughts are your choice. You need to learn to tune in to your thoughts. If you are thinking negative, you're feeling negative. Is anything getting better with the choice of negativity? Be careful not to condemn or judge yourself as these choices are negative also.Learn how to get a check on the committee of voices that live in your head. Become your "observer self "when you are feeling negative. Change your thoughts and change your feelings. 3. Exercising your body daily for 30-60 minutes. The exercise can be divided into segments but it generally takes 20 minutes of exercise to change your level of metabolism. 4. The type or kind of food you eat isn't as important as the portion. Count the calories or guess at the total calories involved. Use a smallplate at every meal as a way to keep a check on the quantity of food eaten. 5. Help others every day. When I started this practice, I made it a rule to call 3 people that I ordinarily wouldn't call in order to monitormy motives in helping others. My condition for myself on these calls was that the help had to be only for them and couldn't include anythingI might want from them for myself. 6. Spend some quality time with yourself enjoying or discovering your personality. This practice can be added to your meditation daily as you ask the God of your understanding to guide you. 7. As you let go of judgment, you learn to love yourself. Anyone else that you tear down, tears you down, too. Use the mental picture of throwing mud and notice that you get dirty. As Maya Angelou reminds us, "We did the best we could, and when we knew better, we did better." 8. Begin acquiring books that are easy to pick up and review. Each day choose one section of a book to reflect on for the rest of the day. Even if you just have time to copy down a sentence, it will give you a path of self-improvement to follow.... | | By: Changemaker: Healing Mind, Body and Soul | | |
| | Difficulty in Getting Help for Mental Help | | 2007-09-25 13:22:00 | | After my two years with clinical depression, I finally understood that I needed medical attention. Although I have always looked for help, I generally have had to be self-diagnosed. Most medical doctors don't recognize depression in their patients. If a patient says that s/he is depressed, many times the doctor will ask the patient if they need medication. This turning the diagnosis over to the patient doesn't happen in most of fields of medicine. So the patient, who is already has depleted energy, has to have the strength to fight for what he/she instinctively knows he/she needs-relief. I think the difficulty for doctors is caused by patients seeking drugs for an escape from reality rather than for the need of chemical imbalance. The other large difficulty for medicating mental problems is the fact that it may take several different prescriptions to find the right anti-depression (anxiety, etc.) drug to work for each patient. This slows down the rapid delivery system of getting medications to heal all as we have become a nation of "instant fixes". This selection of drugs is difficult as any of the drugs for mental illness take 4-6 weeks to be effective in the system. So if one doesn't work, the next one prescribed will be 4-6 weeks also. The patient feels that the doctor doesn't know what she/he is doing so many times the patient returns to the self-medication he/she has found to work. The only question that the doctor needs to ask is if the patient has been feeling this for more than one two week period. If the answer is yes, the patient needs help. So most of the population who suffer from a chemical imbalance continue to be self-medicated (alcohol, other drugs, sex, work, food, etc.... | | By: Changemaker: Healing Mind, Body and Soul | | |
