    Mental Health Blog Directory Update
    2008-08-14 22:04:00
Well the directory recently passed thirty blogs which is pretty good and hopefully will continue to grow. One of the main concerns I had before starting this mini project is a lot of mental health blogs tend to disappear as the stress of writing about your personal demons can get to be too much after awhile. A few of the blogs on the list are on hiatus but I believe and hope they will be restarted in the near future. There have been a couple of blogs that have been rejected outright due to publishing self harm photos which is something I firmly do not believe in and a couple more were asked to write me when there blog hit a month old just to make sure the writer was committed(the nice way) to the process. Anyway below is how the Mental Health Blog Directory stands now and the invitation to join is still open so if you or someone you know that runs a personal mental health blog leave me a comment. Take care.(In order of appearance)1. Family Times - I write about my large family,...

    Really funny jokes-Mental Health Hotline
    2008-08-10 02:04:00
We recently placed a call to the Mental Health Hotline because one of our associates was feeling a little edgy. They really have covered all the bases. Here's what we got:"Hello, and welcome to the Mental Health Hotline....If you are obsessive-compulsive, press 1 repeatedly. If you are co-dependent, please ask someone to press 2 for you.If you have multiple personalities, press 3, 4, 5, and 6.If you are paranoid, we know who you are and what you want. Stay on the line so we can trace your call.If you are delusional, press 7 and your call will be transferred to the mother ship.If you are schizophrenic, listen carefully and a small voice will tell you which number to press. Remember, you are never alone! If you are manic-depressive it doesn't matter which number you press,no one will answer. If you are dyslexic, press 6969696.If you have a nervous disorder, please fidget with the pound key until a representative comes on the line.If you have amnesia, press 8 and state your name, address, te...

    July's Mental Health Report
    2008-07-25 11:45:00
Well I have an appointment next week so might as well use this time to get the monthly report ready (which I have not turned in since April or so).Weight - Pretty much the same since last month. Since starting the Effexor I have been exercising less but at the same time my appetite has gone out the window.Medication - A) Effexor - one week at 37.5mg and the rest of the month at 75mgB) Seroquel - three times a day at a 100mg per shot, have been using the "extra" 50mg rarely as the fog is pretty thick alreadyC) Temazapam - 30mg at nightMedication Side effects - Lack of appetite, tend to disappear into zombie land a lot more quickly as of late but that seems to be improving as my body gets use to the Effexor.Self Harm - The old demon resurfaced for a bit during the second week of taking Effexor. Simple reason would be I needed to prove to myself I was still capable of feeling something and also I needed a way to grab onto reality for a bit. Being self harm free for the last couple of w...

Meditation Good For Psychiatrists' Mental Health
    2008-07-05 10:19:52
Article Source: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/114042.php Meditation sessions are proving a hit for members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists at their Annual Meeting at Imperial College, London - with a growing number claiming they are turning to the spiritual discipline to combat anxiety and burnout.Meditation workshops, run by the College's 2,000-strong Spirituality Special Interest Group, are overbooked. "It seems to be an indication of the need for spiritual nourishment, something that College members are not finding easily in the outside world," says Dr Sarah Eagger, chair of the Spirituality Group.Dr Eagger, consultant psychiatrist at St Charles Hospital, London, said her daily meditation practice was as important in her everyday work as her medical training. "A strong spiritual practice really comes into its own when you are faced with a very distressed patient, while also coping with the pressures of working in teams under immense stress, and then having to spend ...

    The Mental Health Directory
    2008-07-04 09:35:00
Well the results have been pretty good so far but hopefully more people will add their blog to the list. The only real criteria that I have been watching out for is blogs that are basically brand new. Running a mental health blog does take its toll so a number of blogs do not make it past their first month or twentieth post so I am a bit reluctant to add them to the list. Anyway the traffic has been alright on this page and hopefully it has sent some more readers their way. I have noticed that those who have taken the time to write a description seem to be getting the majority of the traffic. So those writers who I transferred over from my blog roll please send in a better description then the few words I used to describe your blog. I am hoping this directory will continue to grow so if you know anyone who should be on this list please send them my way. Below is what the current directory looks like. Happy fourth to my American friends. Take careMental Health Blog DirectoryThi...

    June Mental Health Report
    2008-06-26 23:20:00
I should be sleeping at the moment but I have hesitated taking my pills. Don't tell the doctor but after spending the day lost in the Seroquel fog my brain taking off at full speed is a rather joyous occasion. Anyway I have an appointment early next week so I might as well get this month's report ready. I wrote up last month but never gave it to him as he pissed me off the month before so I decided I was not going to cooperate and shot myself in the foot at the same time .... Medication - Morning (roughly 12pm)- 100mg of Seroquel Afternoon (4pm) - 50mg of Seroquel - this is suppose to be as needed and apparently I need it everyday at 4pm Supper/Dinner (call it what you want)somewhere between 6pm and 7pm - 100mg of Seroquel Bedtime (normally I take it around 11:00pm unless something is good on TV) 100mg of Seroquel + 30mg of Temazaepam. It takes roughly an hour and a half to kick in. Weight - I think it is lower then it was a month ago but I don't have a working scale but I did h...

The Making Of A Mental Health Professional
    2008-06-24 11:58:00
I was thinking of all the common characteristics that make up a good mental health worker in my opinion and came up with the following list: 1. Real Life Experience - No book has ever been written that can truly cover what it is like to be at your absolute bottom, to fight for your own life, to understand the emotional turmoil that shows up when the people who are suppose to love you turn around and stab you in the back. There is good reasons why a high number of drug and alcohol counselors are recovered addicts. 2. The Ability To Empathize - Basically to have a heart. If you are unable to feel what the client is expressing then you have no business being in this field. I am not a book or a diagnosis but a person who would love to be cured but even more important I need you to understand where I am coming from and what I am feeling. 3. The Ability To Think Outside Of The Box - Not everyone with depression or any other disorder is going to respond to the same treatment. This fie...

    Mental Health Journey
    2008-06-13 10:19:00
With my blog being featured over at The Experience Project I think this is a good time to reintroduce myself. Many of the major areas of my life have been detailed to a certain degree throughout the brief history of this blog but I will use this post as a way to summarize my journey so far.I have been dealing with depression for as long as I can remember. My family history has mental illness on both sides going back for generations. Chances are I was depressed the day I came out of the womb and have been unable to get rid of this silent monster since.Self harm started when I was seven or eight with the intention of punishing myself so I would be a "good" child and maybe people in my life would finally leave me alone. Needless to say this did not work. When I was twelve or so I tried to end my life and somewhere in the process I realized that as the blood left my body a sort of cleansing occurred which seemed to make me feel better. What I did not realize is this new monster would...

    May's Mental Health Report
    2008-05-29 13:00:00
Those that have followed this blog for a while know that before my monthly meeting with the mental health doc I try to break down my mental status for the month and just hand over the written work at the onset of the appointment. This way everything I feel should be covered does, it is a strong indicator of where I am at and I don't have to worry about going off on an emotional tirade if he says anything stupid. So here is the report for May.Weight - No changeMedication Schedule -11:00am - 100mg Seroquel4:00pm - 50mg Seroquel6:00pm - 100mg Seroquel11:00pm - 100mg Seroquel and 30mg Temazepam - no issues regarding medication and this schedule seems to work for the most partSleep - All over the map for the last month. Some nights it takes hours to fall asleep then awake off and on all night. Other nights I fall asleep rather quickly then stay asleep for ten to twelve hours.Suicidal ideation - no change Self Harm - no incidents in the last month but urges are starting to increaseExerci...

The Problems In Running A Mental Health Blog
    2008-04-19 10:00:00
Over the last few days I have visited quite a few mental health blogs and a number of them are either really slowing down in the number of post or have announced that they are taking a hiatus. I think that every mental health blog tells a unique story and can go along way in the fighting the stigma of mental illness but there are consequences to maintaining a personal mental health site.1. I find to really connect with the reader it is important to share all of the facts and the emotions regarding a specific event or events. The problem with this is focusing on the past can bring up emotions that may have not been properly dealt with and send the monster back into motion. On more then one occasion I have started a post that I felt was important to cover but realized half way through that this was not a good idea for me mentally.2. The reason for posts on this site to suddenly switch to a poetry day or information about this blogs performance is mentally I need to take a break from d...

    Mental Health Days
    2008-03-27 05:39:00
I think I invented these things. A mental health day. It’s a day when you just take time off from everything and take care of you AND you don’t feel bad about it. I try to incorporate them into my life on a pretty regular basis because I think that mental health is as important as our physical health. For my mental health days, I have even in the past, skipped the exercise. That is changing though. From now on, I am not skipping on the exercise because somehow, I have done well lately and my runs aren’t killing me, I am feeling way more flexible and there is no way that I am stopping and possibly dealing with a setback now. You see, I have exactly 6 pounds to lose to hit my original goal. That is when I promised myself a new wardrobe. Queenie likes to shop. A. Lot. I figured that 50 pounds would have me needing new clothes badly. It is amazing to me how long you can drape yoga pants over a rapidly shrinking body though. Elastic and drawstrings are my best friends r...

    A Mental Health Check Up
    2008-03-14 14:12:00
I guess it is time that I take a peak at how I am doing mentally to figure out what the next steps should be and if any major changes need to take place.Mood Swings - It has been a long week and it is really beginning to show through. One second I am enjoying the experience the next I am trying to run away from it. Losing my temper way to quickly over the smallest things is never a good sign as it usually means the depression monster is beginning to gain more and more control. My brain is so use to the antidepressants to give it that extra kick that I am beginning to think that it is time to go back down that road again as the last two months without it have not exactly been pleasant. The question is which one. I still have dental work to be done so that basically gets rid of the MAOI class but problem is I have been through most of the others and none of them lasted long. With Seroquel, an anti psychotic, I am going from not thinking at all to thinking to damn much and neither s...

Why Depression Frequently Becomes a Neurosis - How to Avoid It and Find Mental Health
    2008-02-18 10:02:09
Depression can have a positive meaning since it serves as a warning that you are not happy with your life and yourself, so you should start transforming your personality and life instead of simply accepting what is killing you. However, if you don’t start psychotherapy and find solutions for your problems, your anti-conscience can invade [...]...

Commuting by Bike: Hazardous to your mental health (?)
    2007-12-11 09:44:00
Yesterday, I decided to punish myself with a bike commute to and from work. I use the word "punish" because I've been quite a sissy-boy in the "cold weather riding" department. Resolving to ride the fixed gear bike to work 2-3 times a week, all winter long, I decided to pick one of the nastier days as a way to "break myself in". "Future rides to work won't seem as bad" I reasoned.. Well.. aside from a quick fall on black ice, my ride to work was quite enjoyable, all 9 miles of it. The ride home.. a different story.. It wasn't the darkness that ruined it, it wasn't the cold wind or the damp drizzle or the slick roads.. It was the people who I shared the road with. Quittin' time does something to New Englanders I think. Getting home seems to be a bigger urgency than getting to work, that's for damn sure.  A motorist driving an enormous pick up truck- the kind with four rear wheels and four doors- thoughtfully slowed to my pace, lowered his window, wagged his finger and yelled at me to "GET ON THE SIDEWALK!". On at least three other occasions, motorists blared their horns at me, and then once they could get past me, gunned the throttle while shaking their heads in disapproval. I can't read their moving lips too well, but their "body language" makes it pretty clear that feathering their brakes for a few seconds while basking in the warmth and comfort of their car, in order to avoid pasting the road with my shivering body parts, , is not appreciated.. at all. Mentally, it really takes the wind out of your sails. You know you're doing something good for the body, for the mind and even for the environment, but those who can't afford to be delayed for 5 seconds by a human life perched precariously on top of a 20 pound machine going 20 miles an hour through the darkness on top of frozen asphalt, really make it hard to be optimistic about anything to do with PEOPLE. Enough said. If you're a motorist and en...

The Connection between Mind and Mental Health
    2007-12-05 02:16:00
RSS CrossRef Search and visit Healthlines: Genes. Which are the benificial effects of exercise?Mental Health charities in the UK already back exercise programmes as a way of lifting depression. While the link between exercise and improved mood is well known, the reasons behind it are not fully understood. The latest research focuses on an area of the brain called the hippocampus, which is already established as a target for antidepressant drugs. Yale University experts developed a test to see which genes in this region were made more active during exercise, and highlighted one called VGF. This gene is linked to a 'growth factor' chemical involved in the development of nerve cells. The natural 'high' produced by exercise could one day be available in a pill that targets a gene in our brains. Exercise boost Mind and Body. Now we are aware of a specific gene which has anti-depressant effects. To test the health benefits of the newly discovered gene, the researchers administered concentrated doses of VGF to one group of mice and blocked the VGF gene in the other group. The mice who received the VGF doses exhibited the same effects produced by a powerful anti-depressant drug, while blocking the VGF gene caused the mice to experience symptoms of depression.Ask a marathon runner about 'runners high' and he'll tell you that it's the pleasant feeling that he experiences sometimes during and after running. Moderate exercise can produce the same effect. A little known fact is that this is a reaction to a natural body function that occurs during exercise called endorphin release. Beta-Endorphin is a neurohormone that is released into the bloodstream from the pituitary gland. Endorphins attach themselves to specific receptor sites in the brain that affect our perception of well being and in the extreme, euphoria. It’s the body’s reward for doing something healthy like exercise.RSS CrossRef Search and visit Healthlines: Hormonen. What is the connection between Runners ...

Here's a great piece sent to me by a friend at MySpace - Props and cheers for the (unknown) writer!!Recently a friend of mine went a little nuts and had to be put in a state mental institution for a while. Mental Health of Healers
    2007-10-22 07:40:53
Alcoholics Anonymous has revolutionized the way alcoholics are perceived by their peers. The shame of having a problem has been made much easier by the respect given to those who change their lives by giving up an addiction. After I came to recovery in 1976, my daughter told me that she had been telling the neighbors that I was an alcoholic. I was somewhat surprised because I didn't know my neighbors very well. So I sat down and asked her to tell me what an alcoholic is. She said,"Oh, Mommy, you know. It is someone who doesn't drink and smiles a lot."  The only alcoholics she knew were in AA. In the early 1980's, the adult child/codependency recovery solutions began to appear in many reading sources. The media figures who helped launch the recovery movement were Phil Donahue and Oprah Winfrey. Betty Ford brought a high level of acceptance to the recovery field as well as a treatment center that worked. Codependency Anonymous was started in 1986. The field of addiction was le...

    World Mental Health Day
    2007-10-10 12:48:00
Today is World Mental Health Day as initiated the World Federation for Mental Health and has been celebrated annually since 1992. The theme for this year is "Mental health in a changing world: the impact of culture and diversity"."Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”The culture you are surrounded in greatly determines the way in which you deal with your symptoms. However, mental health effects every country no matter where you live. According to the WHO website:Mental, neurological and behavioural disorders are common to all countries and cause immense suffering. People with these disorders are often subjected to social isolation, poor quality of life and increased mortality. These disorders are the cause of staggering economic and social costs. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide are affected by mental, behavioural, neurological and substance use disorders. For example, estimates made by WHO in 2002 showed that 154 million people globally suffer from depression and 25 million people from schizophrenia; 91 million people are affected by alcohol use disorders and 15 million by drug use disorders. A recently published WHO report shows that 50 million people suffer from epilepsy and 24 million from Alzheimer and other dementias. In addition to the above figures, many other disorders affect the nervous system or produce neurological sequelae. Projections based on a WHO study show that worldwide in 2005, 326 million people suffer from migraine; 61 million from cerebrovascular diseases; 18 million from neuroinfections or neurological sequelae of infections. Number of people with neurological sequelae of nutritional disorders and neuropathies (352 million) and neurological sequelae secondary to injuries (170 million) also add substantially to the above ...

    E-Mental Health, Stress en Depressie
    2007-10-10 02:16:00
CrossRef Healthlines: Fit . ...
