The Metabolism Society needs your help, please sign.
    2008-06-23 20:28:12
I received this in my email today for my website and promptly posted it on my low carb forum but just now realised I should probably chuck it up here too for my readers whom don't frequent the forum:I just received this in my inbox from Richard Feinman, founder of the Nutrition and Metabolism Society and editor for the journal, Nutrition and Metabolism.Basically, it is a petition for the goal on bringing more research and acknowledgment into the effectiveness of treatments of Diabetes 2 through low carb diets rather then just intensive drug therapy which seems to be the focus. With two latest studies doing just that, resulting in one of them having to finish their study early due to too many people dropping dead! I posted about a Management of Diabetes Case Vignette once where doctors from around the world were given some information on a 55 year old woman with diabetes 2 and asked to vote and comment on their treatment from 3 options. None of these include a low carbohydrate diet, jus

    What is Metabolism ?
    2008-04-21 12:58:46
Metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories in order to maintain itself. Whether you are walking, eating, drinking, sleeping etc. your body is constantly burning calories . Even while we sleep our metabolism is working. Metabolism is a constant process that begins when we're conceived and ends when we die. It is an important process for all life forms. If it stops, a living thing dies. The body burns calories in three ways : Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) , physical activity , and the thermic effect of food. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) This is a measure of the energy that your body uses when it is inactive. It represents the minimum amount of energy required to keep your body functioning, including your heart beating, lungs breathing, brain working and body temperature normal. BMR accounts for 60-75% of daily calories burned. This means you burn the most calories while at rest. The faster your metabolic rate the more calories you burn. The number of calories required for basal m

Negative Calorie Foods - Foods That Speed Up Metabolism
    2008-04-20 20:05:12
Foods That Speed Up Metabolism - Negative calorie foods speed up metabolism as they burn more calories then they contain. Negative calorie foods are foods, which use more calories to digest than the calories the foods actually contain. Calories from these foods are much harder for the body to breakdown and process. In other words, the body has to work harder in order to extract calories from these foods. For example, if you eat 200 calories of a food that requires 250 calories to digest, then you've burnt an additional 50 calories simply by eating that food. List of negative calorie foods Vegetablescabbage, carrot, cauliflower, tomato, cucumber, broccoli, lettuce, celery, fennel, aubergine, gourd, leek, lettuce, marrow, peppers, celery, radish, chicory, spinach, cress, turnip, hot chili peppersFruitswatermelon, guava, apricot, mandarin orange, blackberry, melon, cantaloupe, blackcurrant, peaches, clementines, plums, damsons, raspberry, grapefruit. rhubarb, strawberry, honeydew melon,

Interval Training - Great way to boost Metabolism
    2008-04-20 20:03:26
Interval training is training using short bursts of high intensity exercise that are separated by recovery periods of low intensity exercise. It alternates short bursts of intense activity with lower intensity activity. It is a scientific way to train your body to burn more calories. You will push yourself beyond your comfort level for short bursts of time. For example walk 3 mins then run for 1 min and keep doing that until your 45 mins or up. Gradually you'll be able to run for longer periods of time. This will force your body to burn more calories because when you do the running your body burns more energy. Giving your body this jolt will increase your overall calorie burning both during and after exercise.Interval training shocks your body and causes a greater increase in post exercise metabolism than regular cardio.

Green Tea Increase Metabolism, May Aid In Weight Loss
    2007-12-17 22:15:33
Green tea extract has been the focus of several weight loss studies recently. In addition to its healthful benefit of strong antioxidant activity and its Leptin is a protein produced by fats that appear to play an important role in how the body manages fat storage through brain signals. Years ago it was thought by scientists that lower leptin levels would increase appetite. Current research has now found that it does just the opposite and decreases appetite. There is clear evidence that green tea's polyphenols (EGCG) are a factor in depressing leptin as well as affecting other hormone levels important in regulating appetite. read more

The Low Fat side of the Kimkins Diet: Rabbit Starvation, Sudden Death and Resting Metabolism.
    2007-12-04 21:17:00
Low Fat Side of Kimkins parts 1 and 2As discussed in the previous article, very low calorie diets like kimkins can cause gall stones due to rapid weight loss as well as the lack of fat that is commonly seen on this diet. This, may also be a danger for low calorie diets like Tony Ferguson which also commonly results in rapid weight loss, very low fat and can easily slip into the VLCD category for some as well. Liquid Protein diets and Sudden DeathA concern is the sudden deaths associated with the liquid protein shake VLCD diets in the 70s and 80s. Now yes, there was a major issue with the type of protein used but it wasn't the only issue. Of course there have been improvements in the quality and thus safety of these liquid meal replacement diets over the short term (though they still carry lots of risks) BUT they do not show any safety for unsupervised diets, let alone ones that are simply a stab in the dark and offer no real nutritional guidelines and minimums, to avoid risks associated with VLCD dieting and fasting. I should add to this that a little while back in the space of a little over a week I had heard of two incidents by people whom had allegedly run into heart trouble whilst following Kimkins. The last person apparently had dangerously low levels of potassium, that is not something to be messed with. The fitday in which allegedly belonged to this person appeared to be kimmers experiment with fat under 30g but mostly under 20g. Protein choices were mostly protein shakes, chicken, egg, fish and turkey and went back to early June so this person would appear to have been on this diet for over 2 months when they ended up in hospital. I haven't heard any more of these two incidences since. "IN 1976 a book entitled The Last Chance Diet was published and almost immediately, several liquid-protein-modified-fast (LPMF) diets became very popular and fashionable as means of rapid weight reduction. These diets were intended to serve as the dieter's only source of ca

    Low-carbohydrate nutrition and metabolism
    2007-08-23 01:43:17
Hey I just found this review and wanted to share, you can read the full text here on American Journal of Clinical NutritionAbstract:Low-carbohydrate nutrition and metabolismThe persistence of an epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes suggests that new nutritional strategies are needed if the epidemic is to be overcome. A promising nutritional approach suggested by this thematic review is carbohydrate restriction. Recent studies show that, under conditions of carbohydrate restriction, fuel sources shift from glucose and fatty acids to fatty acids and ketones, and that ad libitum–fed carbohydrate-restricted diets lead to appetite reduction, weight loss, and improvement in surrogate markers of cardiovascular disease.

We have heard too much about metabolism, slow metabolism and fast metabolism. But what really is metabolism.
