    McCain Pickup Option 1: Michigan
    2008-08-04 12:18:00
By now, everyone has heard reason after reason why the Democrats should win the White House and increase their majorities in Congress this year. Bush is unpopular. Iraq is unpopular. Gas prices are high. The economy is shaky. The natural political pendulum has swung right for the past 6 or 7 years and is now lurching back towards the left. Barack Obama is raising boatloads of money. John McCain is not a gifted political speaker. Most of the electorate thinks the nation is on the wrong track. And the Democrats are seeing their registration numbers climb while the Republicans' numbers are stagnant or falling. However, John McCain can still win the White House. And a McCain victory seems to be the best shot Republicans have of avoiding a complete shutout in November. In terms of the electoral map, it is true that he will be on defense more than offense, contrary to Barack Obama. However, McCain's pickup opportunities are so significant that if he were to win just one of these states, it wo...

It is a real pleasure to see when a company develops their own way of solar roofing technology, which is quite simple to install. This video presents a team of the Michigan company called the Luma Resources at their demonstration of solar roof installation (LumaResources.com). The company says, that their solar photovoltaic system belongs to the 'third generation' of power PV roofing.I believe, that the solar tiles technology has a very bright and promising future, after the Presidential election in US, when the corrupted Oil lobby from the White House is going to be removed to where it belongs to - to the history of worldwide pollution, bloody wars and merciless destruction....

    Michigan coach in Manningham's corner
    2008-04-30 05:00:01
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News had a great interview with ex-Michigan coach Lloyd Carr yesterday. The subject was, of course, Giants' third-round pick Mario Manningham, who played for Carr. Here's a snippet. DN: We know what the media reports have said about Mario Manningham, but you knew him well. What kind of a kid is he? Carr: I think Mario is a young guy with enormous ability. I think he probably went to, like a lot of guys who come out early, he went to the combine without much preparation because he had a problem with his agent. So I think part of it is that he had some things that didn’t go well for him at the combine. He didn’t run very well. I look at Mario as a guy with enormous talent. He’s made some mistakes, and yet I think he’s with an organization that will give him good support. I think the biggest thing is, I’m sure and I’m confident that he’s learned some things in this process. He’s a young guy. Q: But i...

Better Know a Draft Prospect: East Michigan Defensive End Jason Jones
    2008-04-18 14:39:16
The least you should know about Jason Jones... Height 6-5 Weight 262 lbs 40 Yard Dash 4.76 20 Yard Dash 2.88 Bench Reps 18 3 Cone 7.75 Compares To: MICHAEL MYERS-Cincinnati: "Like Myers, Jones is a bit of a tweener, as he lacks bulk and ideal lower body strength to play inside and is too inconsistent with his pass rush moves to be an impact edge rusher. He is very good at run containment, but you would think that a player with his incredibly long arms could get more pass break-ups than he has. He lacks pass rush moves, relying more on a clean release from the outside or squeezing through the gaps to impact the pocket. Still, he has been productive vs. the ground game and later in the draft, he is worth a pick to see if he can develop into a starter at end or tackle. At worst, he will provid...

The Greatest Wonders of Farmers Auto Insurance in Flint, Michigan
    2008-02-22 18:06:24
Often, by the time that they reach young or middle adulthood, individuals and families have located an insurance company in whom they have trusted for several years. These companies, such as Farmers auto insurance in Flint, Michigan, have demonstrated an excellent track record of customer service and less costly premium rates. When people move from state to state, they often take these preferences along. Drivers with Farmers Auto Insurance who lived before in Georgia, for example, will usually prefer to continue working with the same insurance company as long as this company is licensed to provide insurance in the new state. They will probably, however, need to locate a new agent after moving. While many companies are licensed in nearly all of the 50 states, a few are not, and it is important to check and make sure that the company you want to use is licensed in the state in which you reside. In addition, the company that you have used before may or may not offer the best rates in Michig...

2008 may be brutal again for Michigan real estate
    2008-01-22 15:15:00
Metro Detroit's real estate market was socked hard last year, marked by the largest drop in home prices since the Reagan administration, the third-consecutive drop in annual home sales, the lowest number of new home permits since at least 1969, and a massive wave of foreclosures that drove thousands from their homes. It likely will be another tough year in 2008. While the downturn in the region's housing market may slow down, there isn't likely to be any noticeable rebound until the second half of the year, at the earliest, analysts say. ...

    Post-Michigan State of Affairs (R)
    2008-01-16 14:24:00
The results are in and Mitt Romney is the clear winner of the Michigan Republican primary. Beating rival John McCain by a healthy 9 points, Romney finally won a "gold medal" (people often ignore Wyoming). Independent and Democratic voters simply didn't turn out for McCain in large enough numbers this time. People are often quick to minimize Romney's victory by reminding everyone that Romney was born there and that his father was a popular state governor. McCain referred to Romney at least twice as a "native son" in his concession speech. These are convenient excuses, but I think the main reason why Romney won is because he paid the most attention the the economy, which was certainly weighing heavily on the minds of Michigan voters. However, Romney's victory did not wound McCain as much as it wounded Mike Huckabee, who finished a distant third. Huckabee has now placed first once and third twice. Thus, the onus is now on Huckabee to win South Carolina. Given the religious conservative bent of the state, Huckabee should be able to eke out a victory there. If he fails to do so, he will be hard pressed to win elsewhere. He could easily rationalize not winning in New Hampshire and Michigan because they are moderate Northern states with a smaller Christian conservative base. That excuse won't fly in South Carolina, however. An ominous sign for Huckabee is that Michigan's evangelicals did not flock to him the way they did in Iowa. This may illustrate the problem Huckabee has with appealing beyond his religious conservative base. Consider these remarks from a campaign event shortly before the primary:"[Some of my opponents] do not want to change the Constitution, but I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that's what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards."(You can view the YouTube clip of this here.)Did thes...

    Mitt Mauls McCain in Michigan
    2008-01-16 00:38:55
Romney pulls in 39% of the vote compared to McCain's 30%From the NY Times:ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who ran as a son of Michigan though he left the state nearly 40 years ago, won a commanding victory Tuesday in the Republican primary here with a message aimed at voters deeply anxious about the state’s ailing economy. Mr. Romney defeated his principal rival, Senator John McCain of Arizona, by winning a clear plurality of Republicans and conservatives, who turned out in greater numbers than they had in the 2000 primary, which Mr. McCain won....With 97 percent of the electoral precincts reporting, Mr. Romney had 39 percent of the vote, compared with 30 percent for Mr. McCain and 16 percent for Mr. Huckabee. Ron Paul, the antiwar congressman from Texas, came in fourth with 6 percent of the vote. Mr. Romney’s victory here means three different Republican candidates have won each of the first three major contests. The race moves to South Carolina and Nevada this weekend with no clear front-runner and two credible candidates, Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, and former Senator Fred D. Thompson of Tennessee, yet to seriously contest a state. Katon Dawson, the Republican chairman in South Carolina, declared the race for the party’s nomination wide open. With Romney winning his first serious victory its looking like there will be no clear GOP front runner going into Super Tuesday. I don't see Romney winning any of the primaries prior to then. I think SC will be a toss up between McCain and Huckabee and Romney is polling fourth in NV. That means that no candidate will have any perceived momentum prior to Super Tuesday. That suggests that those primary wins may well be split along regional (and religious) lines. That scenario ultimately would lead to the thing Captain Ed says the GOp fear most. A brokered convention.McCain and Romney in 08 anyone? ...

Mitt Romney Wins Michigan and Democratic Debate Coverage
    2008-01-16 00:15:22
As many of you know, Mitt Romney has won the Michigan Primary. This is a big win for fiscal conservatives; it appears that Michiganders are tired of Big Government disasters. But, this also means that there is no leading Republican candidate. If Fred Thompson wins South Carolina and Rudy wins Florida, this could get even worse. With all that being said, I also would like to point out that... Click the Headline Link to Visit Copious Dissent and Read the Full Story. ...

    Michigan Primary Results
    2008-01-15 23:14:35
Turnout was apparently light in Michigan today with poor weather and no contest for Democrats. We'll be updating this post as the night progresses, so make sure to refresh.Current Results: Republicans (97% Reporting)Mitt Romney 39John McCain 30Mike Huckabee 16Ron Paul 6Fred Thompson 4Rudy Giuliani 3Uncommitted 2Duncan Hunter 1Current Results: Democrats (97% Reporting)Hillary Clinton 55Uncommitted 40Dennis Kucinich 4Chris Dodd 1Mike Gravel 0Michigan offers 30 delegates to Republicans (down from 60) and no delegates for Democrats (down from 156) after both parties punished the state for moving up its primary.Notes• [7:36PM CST] The exit polling apparently looks good for Romney. The polls haven't closed everywhere, but once they do, watch the timing of the news organizations calling this thing.• [7:40PM CST] Don't forget the Democrats will gather in Nevada for a debate in about 20 minutes. Also, contrary to an earlier ruling, Dennis Kucinich will not be participating in this debate.• [8:00PM CST] CNN declares Romney the winner. This adds another twist to the already unpredictable Republican race.• [8:14PM CST] CNN's Larry King continues to refer to Mike Huckabee as "Hucklebee."• [8:18PM CST] Interesting. Romney opts to come out and speak while McCain is still speaking, stealing media coverage from him. Typically the campaigns wouldn't step on each other's toes like this, but there is no love lost between Romney and McCain....

Ad Wars: Spotlight On Michigan, South Carolina
    2008-01-14 15:47:16
Hillary ClintonThe latest ad from the Clinton campaign, "Listen," includes footage from her New Hampshire victory speech. Clinton suggests that she listened to the voters and "found my own voice." The ad also seeks to remind voters of the seriousness of the race--hinting again that Barack Obama isn't ready to be president. The ad is running in South Carolina and Nevada.John Edwards"Mill," the newest Edwards ad airing in South Carolina, returns to his familiar 2004 "son of a mill worker" theme.Rudy GiulianiThe new Giuliani ad, "First Day," suggests he will push for the "largest tax cut in American history" if elected.Mike HuckabeeAn anti-Huckabee group, Victim's Voice, is airing this ad, which previously ran in Iowa, in South Carolina this week. In the ad, Lois Davidson tells the story of her daughter, killed by an Arkansas parolee. The ad concludes by suggesting that if not for Mike Huckabee, Davidson's daughter would be alive today. I never saw the ad during its Iowa run and I'm curious how large the ad buy really is in South Carolina.John McCainThe latest McCain ad, "Michigan Endorsed," trumpets two Michigan newspaper endorsements. The campaign also has a new radio ad, in which McCain tells the story of fellow POW, Mike Christian.Barack ObamaThe Obama campaign has released a new ad, "Moment," in Nevada. How Do you Find a Good Auto Insurance Quote in Michigan?
    2008-01-11 00:49:29
How Do you Find a Good Auto Insurance Quote in Michigan?by: Terry Bolton Have you ever wondered how much money is spent on traffic accidents and car theft each day, month or year? What if each driver had to pay the money out of their own pocket? How many do you thin were able to pay? Fortunately we have invented a smart tool just to avoid such mean circumstances and this tool is called car or auto insurance.Auto insurance is one of those things we all complain about until we need it - then we sure are glad we paid those premiums on time. However, like any other product, the price you pay for your auto insurance can vary widely by company. Getting an auto insurance quote from many companies can help you find out who offers the best deals in automobile coverage as well as let you examine the specific benefits the company offers to Michigan drivers. Every company has different packages and you should examine closely each quotation to see what benefits the company is offering for your dollar. In Michigan automobile owners pay some of the highest auto insurance rates in the industry for a non-major metropolitan area because of the harsh winters and sometimes hazardous driving conditions that come with those winters. Because of the wide variations in rates many drivers re-evaluate their coverage needs each year to see how rates have risen and fallen and which company is now offering the better deal.Remember, all insurers must offer the same types of basic coverage. It is usually the discounts, extra riders and other benefits that an insurer offers that is the deal breaker when it comes to purchasing coverage. Some companies will offer free rental-car reimbursement if your car is in the shop for an accident, others will cover emergency roadside service for insured motorists. All these perks should be evaluated in relation to the total price you are paying for coverage. After all, ERS service is nice, but if you are already a member of AAA or another automobile club then it ...

    Michigan vs. Minnesota
    2007-10-28 11:51:34
Blegh...I'm not quite sure what else I really have to say about yesterday's Michigan game. The 34-10 score does not indicate how awfully they played awfully in the first half, but after the beginning of the season, I'm not going to complain. A win is a win.Minnesota carved up the Michigan defense in the first half with that halfback hand-off from the shotgun, the back running between the center and guard. I think it's a zone read of some kind, but correct me if I'm wrong. They ran it all day long.Things got better in the second as the weather got colder. Mallett threw some nice long passes, but also made a couple really awful ones, a particularly bad screen pass to his receiver's feet comes to mind. Both Manningham and Arrington came up with some amazing circus catches that make me wish I had remembered to record the game.Lastly, both Minor and Brown were sick. I'm not sure how much of it was a product of the atrocious Minnesota defense, but Minor rushed the ball 21 times...

A photo from our trip to Midland, Michigan
    2007-10-13 17:54:16
Hi everyone, I just want to share a picture I snapped while on our trip to Midland, Michigan. It was a short and quick trip, because we were just picking up airplane parts that my husband's friend ordered. My husband offered to pick them up for his friend, so the kids and I also tagged along. I just thought it would be exciting to come along for the ride. So, that was fun though we had to go back home right away. Now, this coming Wednesday, we will be taking off again to Chicago, Illinois. We will be taking our little one to a Orthopaedic Surgeon. She has a leg problem-born with a birth defect, so that is why we are going to see an Surgeon. We hope that something can be done to help get our daughter's leg fixed. Anyway, I have been busy on my journal, so I don't often get to make a lot of updates here. But here let me share a picture to make my blog entertaining, and fun to visit every once in a while. Well, that is if you have not been dropping by often...LOL-lurking here...ahahah! It is the three of us; Tiana, Hannah, and me Ana. Okay, so long!...

Video Premiere Of Rogue Wave's New Video 'Lake Michigan'
    2007-09-10 07:18:21
Bay Area indie-pop quartet Rogue Wave are back with a new album and a brand-new Malloy directed video, 'Lake Michigan.' The band journeyed to the mountainside outside of Los Angeles, and frontman Zach Rogue experienced enough to have stories for days. "Two crazy deer darted in front of the El Camino," he tells Spinner. "And by the end of the shoot, we had a mud fight. [Also], there was a massive flat asphalt platform that overlooked L.A. It was our 'Thelma and Louise' moment. Would we take the plunge and drive off into eternity, or find the crew and eat a morning bagel?"Rouge Wave, 'Lake Michigan' video premiere on Spinner! ...

    2007-09-02 03:16:57

Appalachian State Defeats The University of Michigan Wolverines 34-32!!!
    2007-09-01 21:56:29
Today was the greatest upset in College Football History. Appalachian State defeated The University of Michigan Wolverines 34-32, at Michigan's Season Opener at the "Big House." This was nothing but a total embarrassment for the Michigan Wolverines. They should have won by a landslide. It is time for Lloyd Carr to be fired or resign. End of Story. When he recruits the greatest athletes and football players in the Country and continues to show up to the game ill-prepared (career bowl record of 5-7. Furthermore he has gone 1-4 in the past five years in bowl games), it is time for him to go.There is no excuse for losing to a B-level team when the University of Michigan was ranked #5 in the Country coming into this game. Now their season is over before it started. Consider this an open thread.Related EditorialsUFC 74: Randy Couture Defeats Gabriel Gonzaga !! (Open Thread)...

Michigan to Move Its Primary Up
    2007-08-18 04:17:46
Whew. This presidential race is tiring. At least we finally got that whole primary calendar thing sorted out. NOT:According to sources inside both parties, the two state parties in Michigan have agreed to move the state's primary -- legislatively -- to Jan. 15. This is a compromise date out of respect for Democratic Sen. Carl Levin, who really wanted to move the primary to Jan. 8. Others wanted the primary on Jan. 22 as a way to, essentially, play ball with the other early states. There was a nice window being created for a Jan. 22, 2008 event. But by moving to Jan. 15, this will put pressure on the other early states to either entertain a December event or lobby the two national parties to not sanction Michigan at all. Here was the previous primary calendar:January 14 – Iowa CaucusJanuary 19 – Democratic Nevada CaucusJanuary 22 – New Hampshire PrimaryJanuary 29 – Republican South Carolina Primary(Michigan)Here it is now:January 14 – Iowa CaucusJanuary 15 – Michigan Primary...

    Michigan and Trumbull
    2007-07-30 01:35:44
I have no idea when the first time I saw Tiger Stadium was, or what transpired at any games that I attended there, but what I do remember I feel is far more important. I’m not sure if I would have turned out any differently had I never visited the stadium, but I cannot imagine a childhood without lazy summer days spent in a ballpark. I remember those long low tunnels and the great expanses of green everywhere. I remember the sea gulls and the hot dog vendors and watching batting practice. I can still remember sitting in those plastic chairs eating peanuts with my dad and even if I wasn’t paying complete attention to the game, I was learning to love it, I was soaking in the atmosphere. I’m not even sure what more I can express about baseball or childhood or the Detroit Tigers that I have yet to in this space. It meant everything to a kid from Dearborn, to a Detroiter at heart whose blood was full of motor oil, to sit in that stadium and be part of something that stretched back to times that were written in the black and white of newsprint. Wins or losses never mattered back then, but I still remember those seats along the third base line with the sun glaring down at me. There has been a ballpark on the corner of Michigan and Trumbull since 1912, but it seems that that might soon be ending. The Detroit City Council approved plans to demolition the stadium, but then voted against transferring ownership to the demolition company… I don’t know what they’re doing, whether it is just politics or a genuine interest in preserving at least some of the old stadium. I just feel numb to it all now. I know I’m not an impartial observer in this by any means. A history major that happens to love baseball is against tearing down Tiger Stadium? I’m sure that’s a shock to everyone, but I can’t help but feel with my heart on this issue. I understand the arguments for demolition, but I don’t want to hear them anymore. To me, that building is the heart and soul of the city, and now it is deteriorating like everything else. The Free Press ran an article the other day about how people living near Tiger Stadium are sick of it sitting there, and how it has become an “eye sore”. The entire article pained me to the core. One resident claimed that no one wants to live near a baseball stadium. Really, Matt Casadonte? Maybe you should have fucking thought of that before you moved across the street from one that has been standing for almost a century! And honestly... what kind of person wouldn't want to live near a ballpark? There were some good quotes in the article, too, but far too many of them were horrible. Tiger Stadium deserves better than that. It is a landmark and a place that has meant so much to so many, and these people are just willing to toss it aside? At lest there are some who are working to keep the stadium, but it seems like it is too little. Ernie Harwell said it perfectly in the Free Press. “Tiger Stadium has meant a lot to generations,” Harwell said. “If we can’t (save part of it), we’ll have to keep Tiger Stadium in our memory, our mind and our heart, and cherish it that way.” Somehow Detroit just won’t feel right without that old ballpark sitting at Michigan and Trumbull. I just hope they find some way to honor it there....

U.S. Supreme Court Did Not Challenge Conventional Wisdom (Michigan High School Sports)
    2007-06-26 18:33:00
U.S. Supreme Court did not Challenge Conventional Wisdom When it Came to Changing Michigan High School Sports Schedules.I once wrote:"Challenge Conventional Wisdom with Profound Knowledge (http://www.deming.org/theman/teachings.html) to seek Creativity and Innovation."This may be old news to some but I still can’t believe the Michigan Supreme Court (http://www.wzzm13.com/sports/sports_blog_article.aspx?storyid=73376) refused to hear the “complete” ramifications of changing Girls High School Sports Seasons. The biggest flaw will be girls basketball will now compete with the boys in winter as opposed to fall.Conventional Wisdom is not always best and to not challenge its premises is to be lazy and ignorant. It takes guts to challenge authority, especially “Blind Respect” when it comes to seeking fairness and truth. Just because the lower courts and some influential people view the rules as sexual discrimination does not make it so and to not analyze the situation which affect th...

    Michigan Travels
    2007-03-26 08:07:00
Michigan TravelsI find pieces of my parents' house in my brother's. The ceramic dishes, the wok hiding under the stove, the pots on the burners. It's the first time I've been to his place since he moved in, and it feels both immediately familiar and unfamiliar. Familiar because I feel comfortable--it's the bachelor pad of my kid brother, after all, and I don't feel the otherness of a guest even though his friendly roommates refer to me as one--unfamiliar because this is the first house he's lived in without our parents, and though it's been months since he moved to Lansing I hadn't been able to visit until this weekend. I played a show at the cafe down the street. The walls are decorated with brush paintings from a trip to China two years ago, chopsticks from his fellow InterVarsity staff roommate, a jazz poster from his musician roommate, and wallpaper that was fashionable decades ago. The fridge is a relic from the 70s (much like my microwave), but with the retro feel of the house the...

    The Michigan Invasion
    2007-03-06 02:35:00
The Michigan InvasionIn the middle of the gray, snow-covered landscape that is Chicago in the winter, there's an oasis of green: the Garfield Park Conservatory. I visited the indoor garden for the first time on Saturday. A group of old friends from the University of Michigan descended upon my apartment over the weekend: Patrick flew in from Boston and Mike D., Cat, and Meulenberg drove from various parts of Michigan. Never has our two-bedroom apartment held so many overnight guests at once. It was crowded, sleeping bags and blankets covered the floor--I missed it, but apparently on Saturday morning someone built a fort--and it was great. It's funny to think that none of us live in Ann Arbor anymore--Patrick considers it a personal triumph that I live in Chicago and am not planning to leave (for a while, I'd wanted to move to New York). After brunch on Saturday, our afternoon stop was the conservatory, which none of us had seen in spite of most of the group's familiarity with Chicag...

    Michigan Flashback
    2005-11-21 18:02:00
We've just returned from Ann Arbor after a whirlwind trip to visit the University of Michigan, brother & sister-in-law Jordan and Emily, and various other Flakes of the north. The picture is of Adum and his brothers Jordan and Read in the Law School Quad on campus. The feedback was that our panel speeches and discussion went over well despite the fact that our delayed plane made us late to our own panel. I was amazed at how comfortable I felt talking to all those students and their families. It was much easier than speaking in church in front of people I know. Why is that? It was fun to see Michigan again, but I definitely didn't have any pangs to stay any longer. Our lives were 100% different back then and I can't connect with who I was so it's like visiting someone else's past life. I have forgotten almost everything about the place. It's so weird to be somewhere that you used to know like the back of your hand and not even be able to name the major streets anymore. The brain i...

HD Box: Duke 95, Michigan 67
    0000-00-00 00:00:00
The Devils looked a little rusty at the start of the game, and neither team could hit anything from the field early in the first half. Duke started 4-17 from 2, and Michigan started 3-18. Duke got hot earlier than Michigan did, putting together a quick 11-0 run over 5 possessions that essentially put the game away. From that point on, the game played a little bit like a shootout - Michigan scored 51 points in its last 42 possessions, only to be out-gunned by Duke...
