    Will migraine ever be cured?
    2008-06-21 02:33:00
It's notoriously hard to treat, but doctors are closer than ever to finding effective relief for this condition that affects millions. Jeremy Laurance offers a sufferers' guideWho gets it? An estimated six million adults in Britain, or 15 per cent of the population, are migraine sufferers. The condition affects one in four women and one in 12 men and is the commonest reason for consulting a neurologist. Up to a third of patients in some neurology clinics are seeking help for migraine. It is three times more common in women than men and affects people in their most productive middle years. The peak prevalence is from the age of 30 to 39. It also occurs in children, though more rarely, affecting about one in 17. The incidence rises sharply in women at puberty and falls again at the menopause, suggesting a hormonal cause. Why do people get it? Migraine sufferers have "over-sensitive brains". That is shorthand for saying they react strongly to stimuli such as light, noise, motion, fatigue,...

    Effective Migraine Treatment Methods
    2008-05-30 09:42:55
The intense throbbing pain in one particular area of the head is known as a migraine headache, which is often accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting. For some people migraine can be predicted through the onset of "aura"(visual disturbances or a temporary loss of vision), which precedes the migraine. The triggers, which cause migraine headache, can be anxiety and stress, lack of food or sleep, exposure to light and hormonal irregularities. The treatment to migraine with drugs can be approached in two ways either by preventing the attack or by relieving the symptoms during the attack. Most of the people take a combination of treatment by preventing future attacks and taking medications to relieve the pain and restore function. If the migraine headache is associated with menstrual cycle, then, hormone therapy can be useful. The occurrence and severity of migraine attacks can be reduced through other stress management strategies such as exercise, biofeed back, r...

    Botox as a Migraine Preventative
    2008-05-29 04:18:00
by simon dentonUsing Botox to ease the effects of migraine is gaining acceptance.A number of studies have been carried out to asses the effectiveness of Botox in reducing the symptoms of migraine and the results look very encouraging. One such study was carried out Dr. Eross of The Headache Institute. His study of 74 patients demonstrated that 62% of these patients experienced over a 50% improvement in migraine symptoms. On average, patients experienced a 35% decrease in the number of headache days and a 22% decrease in their pain intensity over a three--month period.Todd Troost from the Wake Forest University has treated patients with Botox. These patients suffered from migraine or chronic daily headaches. Most of the patients had previously tried other migraine preventatives, with little effect. The trial consisted of patients received one to four Botox treatments spaced at three--month intervals. Out of the patients who received four treatments, 92% reported an improvement; 84% of th...

The Symptoms Of A Migraine Headache
    2008-05-29 04:17:13
by Carl DiNelloYour doctor will be able to diagnose a migraine headache based on common migraine headache symptoms, or the history of migraine in your family. A detailed history will be taken in order to rule out other headaches such as tension headache, sinus inflammation, or possibly a more serious underlying problem. The headache itself will start off as a dull ache that soon develops into a throbbing, pounding, or pulsating headache. The pain is usually located on one side of the head, but may affect the front of the head, and even the whole head; lasting from 3-4 hours up to as long as a full week. Common migraine headache symptoms would include: Nausea, upset stomach, or abdominal pain Vomiting Dizziness Sensitivity to light or sound Numbness, or weakness Blurred vision Diarrhea Fever Fatigue Additional migraine symptoms that may be present even after the headache has subsided: Neck Pain Need for sleep Dulled thinking A "classic migraine headache" that started with "aura" will af...

    Understanding The Migraine Headache
    2008-05-29 04:16:22
by Carl DiNelloStatistics from The National Headache Foundation have proven that as many as 28 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. Those with this headache problem usually had started with the headaches anywhere from the age of 10 right up to 46. Migraines may also run in families. More women than men will suffer from migraines, with approximately 25% suffering 4 or more attacks a month, approximately 35% will have 1-4 attacks, and approximately 40% will suffer 1, or less than 1 per month. These attacks can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, or even longer. Studies have shown that pregnancy may reduce the number of migraine attacks. At least 60% of pregnant women with a history of migraines had fewer attacks during the last two trimesters of pregnancy. Migraines, simply defined, are headaches that occur primarily on one side of the head, and are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and a sensitivity to light. There are two classifications of migraine headaches, tho...

    What Are Painless Migraine Episodes?
    2008-05-29 04:15:50
by Anna HartWhat Are Painless Migraine Episodes? Most people think of a migraine as excruciating pain, but a migraine episode is far more than pain. Migraines typically have four stages: pre-headache, aura, headache, and post-headache. Millions of people globally suffer from these full-blown, 4-stage migraines - but a minority experience painless episodes. So what are painless migraine episodes? Technically, there is no such thing as a painless migraine. That is, if you go by the International Headache Society's (IHS) Guidelines for diagnosis and classification of headache disorders. Yet your physician may tell you that yours is a painless migraine. He or she may call it a painless, optical migraine. What are painless migraine episodes? The answer is in the question. A painless migraine is a migraine episode that begins with the typical pre-headache stage, progresses to the aura phase of a migraine attack, and then stops short. It skips the headache phase - the pain. If you have a pain...

    Headache migraine
    2007-11-16 15:31:00
Headache migraineHeadache is a very common ailment. Associated with many illnesses, it occurs without specific cause as well. Most headaches arise in tissues outside the skull. Headache is only a symptom. It can occur with the common cold, flu, sinus trouble, toothache, allergies, hay fever and other nose and eye diseases, and menstrual irregularities, to name a few. There are several kinds of headache which can be classified according to location of pain and accompanying symptoms. One type of headache is generally found in the front part of the forehead and is of an acute nature, that is, it comes on quickly and occurs with other symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose and swollen eyes.Another type of headache is migraine. It arises from irregular changes (dilation and constriction) in blood vessels in the scalp, temple, and face. It is usually one-sided, sudden, and very intense. Many times visual disturbances such as blank spaces before the eyes and blurred vision are present. Dizziness, nausea, and other weakening symptoms can also be present.A third type is the tension headache, which is caused by stress. It is often accompanied by stiffness throughout the body. It occurs in the temples or at the back of the head or neck. Many simple home treatments are effective for headache. If you have time, a full body shiatsu is helpful to relax and calm the receiver. The full treatment will also stimulate and balance all the internal organs and is effective for all three types of headaches. As we work to alleviate the pain of headache, we must, at the same time, be attentive to the cause. Many times the source of pain can be traced back to diet. Expansive foods such as spices, coffee, sugar, chemicals in foods (e.g., monosodium glutamate or MSG), fruit juices, fruit, soft drinks, icecream, and other junk foods can cause dilation in the blood vessels and therefore pain. Contractive foods such as beef and all red meats, eggs, cheese, chicken, too much fish and seafood, salt, an...

    Headache migraine symptoms
    2007-09-11 10:24:00
The doctor said, "Joe, the good news is I can cure your headaches. The bad news is that it will require castration. You have a very rare condition, which causes your testicles to press on your spine and the pressure creates one hell of a headache. The only way to relieve the pressure is to remove the testicles."Joe was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He had no choice but to go under the knife. When he left the hospital, he was without a headache for the first time in 20 years, but he felt like he was missing an important part of himself. As he walked down the street, he realized that he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life.He saw a men's clothing store and thought, "That's what I need... a new suit." He entered the shop and told the salesman, "I'd like a new suit."The elderly tailor eyed him briefly and said, "Let's see... size 44 long."Joe laughed, "That's right, how did you know?""Been in the business 6...

    Mitochondria, Migraine and Magnesium
    2007-05-02 07:26:00
Energy Metabolism is the process of cells burning food to produce energy. This is similar to a car's engine burning gasoline to produce the energy that is used to rotate the car's wheels. The cell’s mitochondria acts as the car’s engine, the food we eat acts as the gasoline, and the energy we need to move and think is similar to the energy used to move the car. Two doubleblind studies have shown that magnesium supplementation may reduce the frequency of migraine. Magnesium is responsible for over 300 essential metabolic reactions in the body. It is required for s...
