RRS Supportive President? What are your thoughts on Mike Gravel for Pres?
    2008-01-28 11:00:17
The Rational Response Squad has just received an interesting email. Adam Abeles, Chief Biological Science Advisor for Mike Gravel (former Senator running for President) has written us and vocalized respect for our efforts, along with the request of some exposure due to the congruence of his goals with ours. This includes not only intensified promotion of science in all realms, particularly education, but the elimination of creation science in any classroom, and an open dialogue about the dangers of religion. We are reluctant to throw public support in for any particular candidate as it makes a potential conversion to a 501c3 much more difficult. We are able to convey the facts to you and present you with an area in which to discuss them. We want to know what you think of Mike Gravel. For one minute focus on your ideal candidate, and not the person you have to pick because you can't stand the other leading candidate. Let’s not focus on the chances of victory, but rather the poten

Mike Gravel Calls Americans Fat and Stupid - Reporter Can’t Believe It
    2007-09-14 05:40:52
I’m writing late tonight, and this may suck, but hey, what do you expect from a site with a bunch of badly drawn stick figures for a logo? Least I have a logo. That’s right. Don’t be jealous. Everyone’s going to be blogging about Bush’s speech tonight and it’s either going to be [...]

The '08 Hopefuls, Part 1: Mike Gravel
    2007-06-27 16:13:00
Welcome to The '08 Hopefuls, our new series here at Washington in the Spotlight. In this series, we will examine, analyze and take a close look at the people that have a chance to lead our nation.TOO OLD?Kicking off our series is Mike Gravel, who was a Democratic Senator from Alaska... in the 1970's! He's in his 70's as well, making him the oldest person, Republican or Democrat, seeking the Presidency right now. Can this long shot who's been out of politics for almost 3 decades and is quite old be President of the United States?Simply, no. Mike Gravel has common sense and many of the qualities needed for the job, but he plainly is too old, too rusty and too out of touch to connect with the average American. Although he is uniquely funny, he lacks the freshness I feel the country needs to move forward. I genuinely like Gravel because he seems to have common sense, but let's face it - he won't become president.BRAVERYMike Gravel was an outstanding senator, someone who I would have liked to represent my state. Not because of his party, positions or appeal, but because of his bravery. In the 70's he single handedly filibustered the draft renewal, successfully, and had the Pentagon Papers released after an uphill battle. The '08 Hopefuls, Part 2: Chris Dodd will be released on June 28.

    Ad Wars: Bizarro Mike Gravel
    2007-06-16 01:06:00
Two unusual videos of Mike Gravel surfaced on YouTube this week. The first (below) involves Gravel staring into the camera before throwing a rock into a lake and walking away. The second video show Gravel and camp fire. Bizarre. The campaign gave a response to First Read that somewhat explains the unusual nature of the videos.John McCain attacked Mitt Romney's stance on abortion, posting a video of Romney discussing his pro-choice position. Romney's campaign responded that McCain is obviously desperate to continually attack his opponents.Hillary Clinton picked up the endorsement of Maya Angelou this week. Finally, Fred Thompson spoke to the National Right To Life Conference via video. There have been some questions about Thompson's abortion position and he tries to put fears at ease by noting he was endorsed by the group when he ran for Senate and he's been with them ever since.

    Candidate Profiles: Mike Gravel
    2007-05-01 17:43:00
BACKGROUNDAfter spending nearly three decades out of the political realm, former Senator Mike Gravel is mounting a passionate, long shot bid for the presidency. After serving in the army during the early 1950's, Gravel graduated from Columbia University. He moved to Alaska and was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives, eventually serving as speaker of the body. After an unsuccessful bid for the US House, Gravel mounted a primary challenge of Democratic Senator Ernest Gruening in 1968. Following his surprising upset, Gravel served in the US Senate until 1981, when he lost in another primary challenge to a Gruening grandson. Upon leaving the Senate, he founded the Democracy Foundation, which is pushing to allow voters to create and approve their own laws via national initiatives.Gravel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and has two children with his wife, Whitney.CAMPAIGNGravel threw his hat into the 2008 presidential ring on April 17, 2006, in a speech to the National Pres
