Yeah, this was one of those nights.
Texas squandered a brilliant start by Kevin Millwood, and lost in the bottom of the 9th inning to the Anaheim Angels on Friday night, 2-1. Millwood pitched seven innings and gave up just one run on five hits and three walks, striking out seven.
Not only did tonight mark his 300th career start, but he also notched his 1500th career strikeout. It’s probably his finest 2007 effort to date, topping his start last Sunday against the Orioles when he gave up one run in six innings of work.
After throwing a no-hitter through the first 3.1 innings of the game, shortstop Orlando Cabrera rapped a hard single past Michael Young into left field to break up Millwood’s no-hit bid. | | NEWSFLASH: Millwood Removed From Start | | 2007-05-14 20:47:36 | | Kevin Millwood has been removed from his start this afternoon against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after just 1 2/3 innings. Eric Nadel and Victor Rojas are guessing it’s his left hamstring flaring up again, which put him on the disabled list in the first place. Millwood was down 4-0 after a first inning Casey Kotchman grand slam, and had runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs when he was taken out.
Willie Eyre has been brought into the game, and forced Vladimir Guerrero to pop out to end Anaheim’s 2nd inning scoring threat. Stay tuned for updates; this is obviously not a good development.
UPDATE: The radio guys just confirmed that Millwood has re-aggravated his left hamstring. No word yet on the severity. With Mike Wood’s recent struggles, Bruce Chen or John Koronka are the most likely replacements should Millwood require another stint on the disabled list.

| | NEWSFLASH: Millwood to DL, Littleton promoted | | 2007-05-06 02:44:30 | | Per Jamey Newberg, the Texas Rangers have placed Kevin Millwod on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 29th, due to his strained left hamstring which caused him to miss his start in Thursday’s doubleheader. Taking Millwood’s roster spot is reliever Wes Littleton, who has a 4.61 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 13.2 innings at AAA Oklahoma City.
Given Kevin’s struggles in his last three starts (15 ER in 16.2 IP), this may not be such a bad thing. Mike Wood will take Millwood’s rotation spot during his absence.
