    Strike Started at Potash Mines
    2008-08-08 08:48:00
I wrote earlier about a possible strike at three of Potash of Saskatchewan's (POT) mines. As of August 7, the miners are on strike. In morning trading, Potash is in the low $170s (down 3 to 4%), and has touched 169.I don't think the strike is affecting the stock's price yet, as Mosaic (MOS) is lower by around the same percentage. The price of oil dropped today. Agriculture prices have also slumped. These are the most likely causes. However, should the strike be lengthy, POT might fall more. I'll evaluate the stock again if it gets to $150.The company's strike updates are here.

    Mines, Unions, and Safety
    2007-08-20 11:46:17
For the past 15 days we have been hearing about the mining tragedy in Huntington, Utah. This mining tragedy has highlighted several issues, and has caused much discussion however what has not been emphasized (and ought to be) is the link with Unions, workplace safety and the Bush administration. First, the Crandall Canyon Mine is a non-union mine. In fact, 2 of the 9 unions in central Utah are

    Leverage Land Mines
    2007-07-25 16:31:00
Financial leverage is like a land mine. You might be unaware of it until it blows up.   Buying stocks on margin is an obvious form of leverage (the mortgage on your home is another) and all of us understand how risky it is to buy on margin. Simply put, leverage magnifies your gain or loss and, since you’re borrowing money which must be repaid, you can lose more than your entire investment (the investment and the loan amount).   Okay, you say, point made, but I don’t leverage my investments. Are you sure?   Did you know that many mutual funds use leverage to enhance their returns?  To illustrate, let’s take a look at two Nuveen municipal bond funds (Nuveen is one of the top municipal bond mutual fund companies): Nuveen Municipal Market Opportunity and Nuveen Municipal Value. Kinda hard to tell how they differ from the names, so let’s look further. Both funds are mostly invested in triple A municipal bo

Strange Scenes Inside the Gold Mines
    2007-06-14 19:12:00
Last night was a strange night. I felt something I never felt before in my life and I really did not like it that much. I felt…wait for it….lonely. How weird is that? I have lived alone for six years now and have relished every second of it. I have loved coming home to a dark and silent house; loved not speaking for hours on end on weekends, and doing whatever I want whenever I feel. I look at couples and actually pity their lack of security in themselves. I have mocked those who “need” another person to validate their lives. I have never understood how a person could voluntarily give up their isolation in exchange for some mindless and pointless banter, until last night. Last night I wanted another person around to talk to, to share my excitement with. It was 100% pure selfishness that caused my loneliness and I realize I still have yet to think about what someone else might expect of me, but it is a start I suppose. Wanting another person around might just cause m
