| | Weekend Roundup: Mini-Camp Thoughts | | 2008-06-08 23:15:02 | |
Well the final mini-camp has come and gone. The Dolphins now have a couple of OTA practices left this week and then they hit the road for some vacation before training camp opens in July.
So for today's "Weekend Roundup," I figured I could just talk a little bit about what the media reported from these 5 mini-camp practices.
QB TALKHere's all I'll say about the quarterbacks: It's impossible to really know who had a good day and who had a bad one. These camp reports are very subjective - meaning there's no real way to compare the performances of the 3 quarterbacks. Opinions and bias can easily influence writers to report that "quarterback X" had a good day while "quarterback Y" struggled.
For example, it might be reported that John Beck threw a great pass to Davone Bess. Considering Bess's place on the depth chart, the reporter might say that John was working with the 3rd team. But that doesn't necessarily mean John was working against the 3r... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Camping with FBT: 2008 mini camp AM practice session | | 2008-06-06 13:56:03 | |
[Note by River City Rage, 06/06/08 3:02 PM EDT ]: FBT writes the very best reports on the minicamp and training camp practices. He was kind enough to post his thoughts on today's practice here. You can read more from FBT at Jaguars Journal !
It was good to see the team back on the field this morning, sporting their finest shorts and shirts. Noticeably absent from participation (but still on the field with the team) were Mike Walker (worked with the training staff for most of practice with his knee wrapped. According to the team, he’ll participate in 1 practice daily), Brian Smith (still walking with an obvious limp), and George Wrighster (knee was wrapped up tightly).
There were a couple of uh-oh moments during the practice session with players that you do not want to see coming up lame. Jerry Porter participated early in practice, but during one of the catching drills, after making a nice grab on a slant pattern in front of the defender, he clear... | | By: Big Cat Country - An Unoffical Jacksonville Jaguar

| NFL Jabber | Mini Camp and More | | 2008-06-02 06:18:54 | | The media is trying really hard to make Jason Taylor’s comments about wanting to win in 2008 into a confrontation between Taylor and Bill Parcells. “Please give us some kind of story people…” I feel your pain mainstream media. | | Jason Taylor to miss this weekend's mini-camp | | 2008-05-20 10:30:51 | |
Well we already knew that Jason Taylor likely wouldn't be in Miami until Thursday at the earliest because he has commitments to Good Morning America and Live with Regis and Kelly. Well, after those, he'll be flying back to Los Angeles to handle some things there, whatever that means. What it means to the Dolphins is that Taylor will not be at this weekend's first veteran mini-camp. Yes, it is voluntary and all, but I'll all but guarantee you he'll be the only veteran not at this camp. Here's what he writes for his ESPN.com blog:
And a lot people are wondering if I'm then going to fly to Miami for Friday's voluntary minicamp. Well, I won't be there. I'm going to be in L.A. on Friday. Got some things to do there. I know what the reaction's going to be: Oh, he's the leader of that team, and he needs to be there. But, see, there're different types of leadership in sports. There're guys that can talk all the time, and try to lead by saying: "Oh, this is what we n... | | By: The Phinsider

| Notes from rookie mini-camp | | 2008-05-10 06:00:01 | |
The Giants held their first day of rookie mini-camp Friday.
Here are links to some of the reports files by various beat writers.
Mike Garafolo of the Star Ledger files separate reports on the morning and afternoon sessions.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News filed this report. Vacchiano also lists all the unsigned "tryout" players who were on the field.
Ernie Palladino has a report on one invitee who didn't know until Thursday night that he would be on a football field Friday morning.
A FEW NOTES: Rookie QB Andre Woodson, a sixth-round pick, had an uneven day -- which is understandable considering the circumstances. Garafolo seemed impressed by second-round pick Terrell Thomas and fifth-round pick Jonathan Goff.

| | Weekend Roundup: Mini-camp highlights | | 2008-05-04 23:15:02 | |
Incase you've been living under a rock for the past 48 hours, you know that the main story of this weekend for the Dolphins was their rookie mini-camp, the first one of 2008. And with it's conclusion on Sunday, there's really only one thing that Dolphin fans (and football fans in general) are thinking: Football season can't get here soon enough. All this weekend's mini-camp really did was wet my appetite for, of course, more football. But we'll have to wait a little bit for that.
Here are some of the storylines that came out of this weekend's mini-camp:
A NEW ERA HAS BEGUNFor Tony Sparano, this weekend really marked the beginning of what will hopefully be a successful head coaching career. And he was just as excited as anyone to get on the practice field for the first time. On Friday, Sparano shared with the media:
"It was great. I was excited; didn’t sleep much last night. All of the administrative stuff for me, from that standpoint, was p... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Day at Mini Camp | | 2008-05-03 18:30:19 | |
[Editor's Note by Matty I] A big thanks to KCarr9 for sharing some of his observations from today. His thoughts can be found after the jump. [end note]
When I arrived at the facility there wasnt alot of people there, maybe 75 at the most, so I was pretty excited that I got to see the dolphins rookies so early. They started by giving us a tour of the bubble, weight room, and team meeting room, that was interesting but paled in comparison to actually watching the rookies play. Im not an NFL scout but im coming into my senior season at the Varsity level for my high school. I was a little disappointed that the defense practiced so far away but the offense ended up being more exciting anyway. I ended up taking some mental notes on a few of the players and thought i would share.
Davone Bess- Seemed to lack elite speed, but showed good athleticism anyway. His route running faded, particularly his posts and fades. Otherwise he caught anything that was close to hi... | | By: The Phinsider
| | Broncos Mini-Camp -- Day 1 Quotables - Shanny and Cutler | | 2007-07-10 17:28:14 | | Day 1 of Mini-Camp is in the books, and more than anything the return to the field offers the media a chance to talk to Coach and the Quarterback to get their thoughts on anything and everything... Here are some of the quotes from Day 1 -- HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN On preparing for training camp - "It feels pretty good because you have two sessions of seven-day workouts and almost all of the guys have a good feel for the system minus a few. Today we did something a little different. We worked on the two-minute offense and four-minute, goal line--situations we haven't gone over. It wasn't just a review of situations we have been over. It was a good workout today." On taking time off - "I try to work time off in. The players get some time off, usually like a month-and-a-half to two months. Hopefully it is not two months. During the offseason, we work on free agency and the draft, but right now is when we get some free time. Sometimes we come back in the middle of our vacations to mak... | | By: Mile High Report | | |
| | Settle down, everybody, it's only mini-camp | | 2007-06-15 14:21:06 | | Read enough reports about the Giants first two days of mini-camp workouts, and you'll probably wind up convinced the Giants will go 0-16. Shoot, maybe they should just forget it and forfeit all their games. Newsday's Ralph Vacchiano was particularly negative in his Blue Screen blog Wednesday. Consider this gem. Eli Manning has put together two of his worst practices that I can remember seeing. I lost count on the number of interceptions or near-interceptions he's thrown. Let's just say that despite non-contact, no-pressure drills, very few of his throws have been on the mark. Or even close. Or this one. It's never a good thing to see your first-round draft pick riding the stationary bike during practice, but that's what CB Aaron Ross was doing this morning. Apparently he fell and hurt his head during yesterday afternoon's session and was held out for "precautionary" reasons today. The folks over at Giants 101 are also ready to jump off a bridge, saying "at thi... | | By: Big Blue View | | |
| | Browns Quarterbacks Getting an Education in Mini-Camp | | 2007-06-14 12:59:18 | | While most of the talk about the Browns quarterback spot has been about newcomer Brady Quinn, Browns head coach Romeo Crennel had some insightful words about all his quarterbacks on Wednesday - “They’re all struggling.” Of course Crennel quickly pointed out that the four QB’s currently on the Browns roster are expected to be a bit behind the 8-ball at this time of the year, and he feels confident that they will catch up.
“We’ve got a lot of offense in and we haven’t really honed in on it well enough yet,” Crennel said in Thursday’s Akron Beacon Journal. “They’re going to keep working at it. They’re going to work at it while we’re gone. They’re going to work at it when we come back.” For Romeo and the Browns, quarterback has to be a concern after the position lacked last season as the Browns limped to a 4-12 record. It’s one reason the team was so aggressive in trading back in the first round... | | By: NFL GridIron Gab
| | Bills Wrap Up Mini-Camp | | 2007-06-14 03:24:52 | | Good news and bad news this evening, Bills fans. The good news - with the conclusion of the mandatory mini-camp, we are one step closer to the stuff that really matters. The bad news - we have to wait a month to get to the next step. But let's worry about that after taking a look at the final mini-camp practice: Head Coach Dick Jauron raves about this team's future: "I think we're better on offense and defense," said Jauron. "We're better athletically. I think we're faster. We're bigger and better up front on the offensive side. I believe we have improved ourselves there. That should help us both running and passing and should give J.P. a chance to keep improving." "Defensively we lost some players that were leaders for us and we've added some players and I think they'll play at a high level. Our other players are more mature in our system. They know exactly how we play it. They know exactly how we expect them to play it. I think they'll play it better and faster." I'm... | | By: Buffalo Rumblings | | |

| | Mini Camp Report: Lorenzo Making Moves | | 2007-06-12 20:04:08 | |
I have yet to make it out to a Dolphins mini camp yet as I’ve been busy with weekend plans and work during the week. There are plenty of media outlets and blogs doing daily updates. You can check some of them out here, here and here. One of the big stories coming out of Dolphins camp that has nothing to do with Daunte Culpepper is the emergence of Ricky Williams’ replacement, FSU’s own Lorenzo Booker. Booker has been turning heads in mini camps and looks to form a solid 1-2 punch with rugged back Ronnie Brown. I grabbed a great article on Lorenzo Booker from Real Football 365 which goes into detail on some head turning moves on display down in Davie, FL…
On Friday, the first day of the Dolphins’ latest minicamp, Booker — a third-round pick in April’s draft — made a frighteningly sharp stutter-step move on a dumpoff pass that beat multiple defenders and drew cheers from his offensive teammates. The former Florida State star gener... | | By: SporTech Matter
| | Mini-Camp Thoughts | | 2007-06-11 07:22:36 | | So the final mini-camp of the 1007 off-season has come and gone. Next up, thankfully, will be training camp, the real deal. It's hard to really judge players in mini-camps because there's no contact, but there are a few nuggets that I think you can take out of this past weekend's camp. GINN AND THE RECEIVERS First and foremost, I'm sure many Dolphin fans were relieved to see first round pick Ted Ginn Jr. out there on the field participating in both return drills and receiver drills. And he wasn't even wearing a "no contact" red jersey. There were some reports that he was walking with a minor limp, but that's to be expected and is probably more of a strength issue than a pain issue. In fact, Ginn said that he did not feel any pain in the foot. Coach Cameron wouldn't say that Ginn was 100%, but he was about 90%. I fully expect Ginn to be 100% by the time camp starts. And even with a slight limp and only being "90%," many camp reports... | | By: The Phinsider | | |
| | Samuel a No-Show as Pats Open up Mini-Camp | | 2007-06-05 13:06:30 | | While the New England Patriots have had what many believe is the best offseason in pro football, things may get a bit hairy as mini-camp kicks off today in Foxboro. The Boston Herald is reporting that cornerback Asante Samuel will not be on the practice field today with his team, upset over the fact that he has not gotten a new deal. Samuel’s agent confirmed that his client will not be with the team today. “He’s not coming to camp until a contract resolution can be reached,” Alonzo Shavers told the paper. “Nothing more can be said. His status has not changed, there has been no movement towards a deal.”
Samuel has been offered a one-year franchise tag that would pay him $7.79 million, but he has declined to sign that offer. He has until July 15th to sign the deal unless a new deal can be reached, or he will hold out. A source tells the Herald that Samuel is willing to sit out the season unless a new contract can be reached. Sounds like last season whe... | | By: NFL GridIron Gab
| | 'Premiere' Event Trumps NFL Mini-Camp | | 2007-05-18 23:07:26 | | Mini-Camps are a time for teams to get together as a group for the first time, rookies and vets alike. These camps are scheduled at the descretion of the team, and viewed as an important first step in the development of a team during the off-season. Below is the full schedule -- The Broncos, historically, have held their mini-camps late in the off-season, close to the start of full-fledged training camp. Shanny's explanation for the late mini-camp is simple. It keeps the guys fresh, and makes sure there is never a ton of down time for the players. It all makes sense. There is another reason, and based on two teams experience having their mini-camps this coming weekend it appears Shanny is on the right track. Two incoming rookies, Green Bay's Brandon Jackson and Indy's Anthony Gonzalez are currently entangled in a situation that could be described in one word as ridiculous. Both want to attend their first mini-camps with their new teams, but the NFL is saying they c... | | By: Mile High Report | | |
| | Favre Does a 180 - Will be at Packers Mini-Camp | | 2007-05-17 14:18:41 | | Doing an about face, possibly due to the backlash by even his own fans, Packers QB Brett Favre now says he will be at the teams mandatory mini-camp this weekend. The story of the week around the league is how Favre, who reportedly was so upset with the team recently about not trading for Randy Moss that he demanded a trade, was going to miss the camp to rehab his ankle and stay home to assist in plans for his daughter’s upcoming graduation.
While Favre is not going to be able to practice, by all means it is his place to be at the camp. His daughter’s graduation is not until next weekend, and who in their right mind believes that Favre is running around buying party hats and balloons for his little girl’s graduation party? What, no one else but Brett can hit Party City and grab some decorations for the big upcoming celebration of his daughter graduating high school? If nothing else, it just should prove to the Packers they had better think long and hard about that rebu... | | By: NFL GridIron Gab
| | Bradshaw impresses in mini-camp | | 2007-05-15 15:09:01 | | Scouring through reports on the just-concluded Giants rookie mini-camp, it would seem that one of the most impressive players during the three-day session was running back Ahmad Bradshaw. Here is Coach Tom Coughlin commenting on Bradshaw, after the 7th-round pick from Marshall was particularly solid during Monday morning's workout. "You would have to say Bradshaw had a noticeable (practice) this morning. I thought he did a nice job. He's been back on kickoff returns, on punt returns. He caught the ball coming out of the backfield. You saw a couple runs where he was able to turn the ball north-south. It catches your eye, for sure." Bradshaw is an interesting case. He appears to have the skills to challenge for the job as the Giants third-down back, but there are some serious character concerns about him. That's why he nearly went undrafted. If, however, Bradshaw shows the Giants he can stay out of trouble they might just have found a productive player with their final... | | By: Big Blue View | | |
| | Mini-Camp Tidbits: Camp Wrap-Up | | 2007-05-15 02:37:13 | | Bills rookie LB Paul Posluszny The Buffalo Bills wrapped up their first rookie mini-camp today, and as usual CB has posted some great notes from Day 3's practices. According to his report, rookie running backs Marshawn Lynch and Dwayne Wright both missed the afternoon workout today due to graduation constraints at California and Fresno State, respectively. That turned the afternoon workout into more of a passing camp, with the lone running back (practice squadder Fred Jackson) working with the wide receivers. Some of the more interesting notes from the final day of practices: Quarterback Trent Edwards again had an accurate passing day. He's really effective at hitting his targets. "He does a nice job," said offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild. "He's a smart guy and looks very accurate. It's still very early and we want to see what he can do when the pads are on, but early indications are he is what we thought he was." I'm really enjoying the sounds o... | | By: Buffalo Rumblings | | |
| | Mini-Camp Tidbits - Day Two | | 2007-05-14 01:57:03 | | Bills rookie RB Marshawn Lynch The Bills' rookie mini-camp resumed today with day two of practices, and there were more events that were of particular interest to many Bills fans. CB has posted his Day 2 notes at the main site. The team wraps up the mini-camp tomorrow. On to the more interesting tidbits of the day: On offense the running backs continued to get a heavy dose of catching passes out of the backfield. Fred Jackson, top pick Marshawn Lynch and fourth-round pick Dwayne Wright all looked fluid catching and turning upfield. It should be noted the drills were performed without any defenders. In what CB described as a slow day, this was one of the more interesting points of emphasis to me. We all knew that offensive Steve Fairchild wanted a system in which our running backs were used as receivers; two days of using them split out wide has me very curious. It is likely that the coaching staff is merely using this camp as a way to look at the versatil... | | By: Buffalo Rumblings | | |
