Prius production heading to Mississippi, Tundra to Texas
    2008-07-11 21:53:00
Toyota's got some changes and rearranges underway with its North American facilities to better serve the demands of the market. The biggest news is that Prius production will be coming Stateside, which will help unkink the supply pipeline, if not also lower costs. A new facility in Blue Springs, Mississippi is being readied for the battery-pack-mobile, though the location was initially meant to turn out Highlanders. With consumer desires shifting with the rise of fuel prices, cranking out more Priuses is a higher priority, and beginning in fall 2009, the Highlander will shuffle off to Princeton, Indiana. With the Highlander elbowing its way into the Princeton plant, the vehicle currently produced there, the Tundra, will see its production move under a single roof in San Antonio, Texas. The big-truck moves are of little consequence when the plants are scheduled to be idled beginning August 8th due to lack of demand. Huntsville, Alabama will also hold up on cranking out V8 engines. While

    Adult jokes-'Mississippi Blonde'
    2008-06-06 02:02:00
Two bored casino dealers are waiting at the crap table. A very attractive blonde woman from Mississippi arrived and bet twenty thousand dollars ($20,000)on a single roll of the dice. She said, 'I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I play topless.'With that, she stripped to the waist; rolled the dice and yelled, 'Come on, Southern Girl needs new clothes!'As the dice bounced and came to a stop, she jumped up-and- down and squealed'YES! YES! I WON! I WON!'She hugged each of the dealers...and then picked up her winnings, and her clothes and quickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumfounded. Finally, one of them asked,'What did she roll?'The other answered, 'I don't know... I thought you were watching.'Moral of the story:(1) Not all Southerners are stupid.(2) Not all blondes are dumb.(3) But all men... are men

Mississippi Toyota Plant Pushed Back To 2010
    2008-06-01 11:39:00
This is a recent photo of the new Toyota Plant in Blue Springs Mississippi. Rumors are that the plant opening has been pushed back to 2010 because top executives see a slow down in US Auto Sales.Car Sales in the US have changed in dynamics due to rising gas prices. Many factories are switching line workers from truck assembly plants to car assembly to meet increased demand in fuel effecient vehicles. The only way to lower fuel prices is to lower our consumption of oil. Many are urging drivers to car pool when possible, make one trip to post office-grocery store-etc., trade that gas guzzler if possible. Many are trying to trade their deisel's, big trucks, SUV's, and gas guzzling vehicles. But, are finding that nobody wants these vehicles right now and that has driven the price very low. The demand is down and so are the trade in values. You may find you owe way more than a dealer is willing to give you for the vehicle. In this case you have to figure is it worth trading or are you spendin

I'm baaaaaaaaaaack.THANK CHRIST.I managed to escape Jackson, Mississippi with my life, and return home to the relative calm of New Hampshire.Just for a quick comparison:New Hampshire's motto: "Live Free or Die"Mississippi's motto: "You GONNA die"Five things I learned from my trip:1) Never trust Google's hotel ratingsThe sh*thole I stayed in was rated as four stars on Google:After being there personally, I can see this place ONLY being a four-star rating if the total number of stars you could get was 500 million.2) Don't piss off the motel desk clerkHere's how my check-in conversation went.Me (disgusted): "I didn't realize this was a MOtel...I thought they booked me into a HOtel."Lady clerk: "Say what?! This ain't no MOTEL."(say in a "Oh NO YOU DI'NT!!" voice for best effect).Me: "A hotel has it's room doors on the inside. A motel has them on the outside. That's the difference. Tax Foundation Helps Advance Mississippi Tax Reform
    2008-04-03 23:00:00
Yesterday, Tonya recapped our trip to Mississippi, where we had the opportunity to testify before the State Tax Study Commission, which was established by Governor Haley Barbour to prepare a comprehensive study of the state's tax system and recommend improvements by this coming summer. We took the opportunity to present a new paper outlining recommendations for the Commission to consider, and I must say that the Governor and the Commission were extremely engaged, asking excellent questions and showing a determination to understand the issues. Here are three pictures from our trip:Tonya with Governor Barbour, me, and Commission Chair Leland Speed:Tonya with Forest Thigpen, Commission Member and President of the Mississippi Center for Public Policy, who graciously gave us a tour of the Capitol:Tonya and I in front of the Mississippi State Capitol:We hope to continue to keep in touch with Mississippi and offer research and analysis assistance as their reform efforts progress.

    Mississippi Tax Study Commission Recap
    2008-04-02 23:00:00
Joe Henchman and I attended the first hearing of the MS Tax Study Commission, in Jackson, MS on Monday March 24. The Commission has been appointed by Governor Haley Barbour and will take an all encompassing look at reforming the tax system in the state. They will submit a report by August 31, 2008 with recommendations for improving the state's tax code. The agenda for Monday's hearing included an opening from Governor Haley Barbour, an overview of the state's tax system by Joe Blunt, Commissioner of Revenue, and then testimony from Joe Henchman (Tax Foundation Tax Counsel) and Richard Greene (with the Pew Center on the States and a writer for Governing magazine). Commissioner Joe Blunt showed the group a slide with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants accepted principles for a sound tax system. The main tenets listed were a broad base, transparency, fairness, neutrality, and a convenient payment method, very similar to the Tax Foundation's Ten Principles for Sound Taxatio

    Peavey Peeved in Mississippi?
    2008-03-20 23:00:00
Musical instrument and sound equipment giant Peavey may rock everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to theme parks and stadiums worldwide, but in Mississippi the company may as well be a chump for continuing its business loyalty to the state. The company was founded in Mississippi and continues to locate 18 of its 33 manufacturing facilities in the state. Peavey has been an upstanding company in the state and was even honored in 1991 by President George H. W. Bush, for workplace training, education and achievements in the international marketplace, according to the company's website. So when Hartley Peavey, the company's founder and CEO, saw company after company – both in-state and newly arriving – getting tax handouts, he decided he would finally ask the legislature for one too. While we don't favor tax breaks for selected industries, we really can't blame Mr. Peavey for asking, since the state's website has a 98-page document listing the handouts available

    Mississippi bubble
    2008-03-20 12:20:22

Georgia Mississippi State Preview and Prediction
    2008-03-15 22:07:18
ap/yahoo E6 Georgia vs W2 Mississippi State 8:30 (approx)Previous Meetings: Miss State (Home) 60-49The Georgia Bulldogs' improbable SEC run continues as they are now just 2 wins away from an automatic bid after dispatching Kentucky in OT. However, they are now at a clear disadvantage having already played an OT game earlier in the day while Miss State sat and watched with 24 hours of rest. In the first meeting way back in January, Miss State has 9 blocks and an 18-2 in the 2nd half to lead to victory. UGA does not have great depth usually going just 8 deep. I look for Georgia to come out strong in the first four minutes, but after that first TV timeout their legs could them. Miss State should be able to wear down Georgia in the 2nd half and cruise into the finals.Prediction: Mississippi StateA little sidebar from the end of the Kentucky Georgia game. Billy Gillespie was very upset at the charging no call on UGA's Albert Jackson. The announcers got into a debate regarding the cal

Obama wins Mississippi primary, new race row rocks Democrats
    2008-03-12 00:59:00
Obama wins Mississippi primary, new race row rocks Democrats BILOXI: Barack Obama on Tuesday surged to victory in Mississippi's Democratic primary (Watch) , in a new triumph over Hillary Clinton, as a fierce new race row rocked their bitter White House race. The Illinois senator punched back with his second win in a row since the former first lady pulled her campaign back from the brink of extinction, with huge victories in Texas and Ohio last week. As Mississippi voted, the tone of the race took another nasty lurch, as the Obama camp demanded the dismissal of Clinton's supporter Geraldine Ferraro, for saying: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position." With its 33 nominating delegates up for grabs, conservative Mississippi, reliably Republican in general elections, was the last showdown in the Democratic race before the huge Pennsylvania primary on April 22. Television exit polls handed Obama the victory within minutes of polls closing in the state, and showed a lar

    Mississippi Primary Results
    2008-03-12 00:09:58
Voters in Mississippi have been heading to the polls today and we'll be here to bring you the results and our analysis. We'll update this post as we go, so make sure to refresh your browser. Our thoughts on the contests can be found below.Democrats (99% Reporting)Barack Obama 61%Hillary Clinton 37%Republicans (99% Reporting)John McCain 79%Mike Huckabee 12%Ron Paul 4%Mississippi offers 33 delegates to Democrats and 36 delegates to Republicans.Notes[6:51PM CST] We will include the Republican results, but McCain obviously has the nomination wrapped up. It will be interesting, however, to see how much, if any, opposition he receives. Despite being the presumptive nominee for weeks, Mike Huckabee still managed to peal off one-third of the Republican electorate.[6:54PM CST] For Democrats, Obama is clearly the candidate to beat, having lead by an average of 15 points going into the contest. The huge black population gives him a clear advantage and the Clinton campaign has all but conceded

    mississippi enters the scene.
    2008-03-03 17:39:59
for lunch, went to the all-you-can-eat pizza hut buffet over on siam square with dirk bonapare - the bouncer. while chomping down on pizza, dirk tells me he is going back to canada soon. a job offer came in that is too tempting to refuse. alas, another lounge lizard about to make an exit.after the buffet, dirk and I spent like 3 hours exploring the siam paragon mall window shopping for a variety of things. then, we parted. I went home to take a short power nap before meeting up with da brain, tiger and a couple of others for dinner at the food court. mississippi made a surprise entrance. haven't seen the guy in like 6 months.from the food court, I went to the parking lot to hang out for about 4 hours. met up with the silver surfer, richie rich, brian piccolo, supergirl, special k, and deuce bigalow.in the lobbby, I saw timberwolf, dutch callahan, zorba the greek, and bronson.went home one tired lounge lizard.

    Florida Mississippi State Preview
    2008-03-01 10:34:26
Miss State @ FloridaThe first meeting of the year for these two as the Gators are trying to hold onto a NCAA bid. Florida's weak schedule needs a boost with wins over teams the caliber of Mississippi State, especially at home. Miss State relies heavily on their starting five so look for Florida to push the ball and drive the basket to take advantage of their depth over the Bulldogs. I think Billy Donovan will stick Nick Calethes on Miss State's Jamont Gordon which is risky because of Gamont's ability to get to the line. I like the Gators at home.Prediction: Florida Florida Miss State line Florida's home record will push the line to the -170 range, but I like a line closer to -150.Season: 59-17 (78%) SEC: 29-7 (81%)

East Meets West as Tennessee Travels to Mississippi State
    2008-02-02 10:56:33
Kentucky @ GeorgiaAfter a rough start to the season for the Wildcats, they have ripped off 2 straight wins over SEC East rivals Tennessee and South Carolina. Kentucky comes into this game with a full week to prepare for a Georgia team who has lost its last 2 to those same teams. The Bulldogs main offensive weapon, Billy Humphrey, has been battling a knee injury for most of the year and said after the South Carolina loss it was a reason for his subpar play. If Humphrey can battle through the injury then Georgia has a great chance at home where they are undefeated this season. The Wildcats are 0-4 away from Rupp Arena and shoot just 42% from the field as compared to 47% in Lexington. Kentucky absolutely has to have this one if they want to make a serious run at the NCAA Tournament. I think this game comes right down to the wire with Georgia prevailing on a last second shot.Prediction: GeorgiaCSTV is broadcasting this Dog and Cat fight online!Florida @ ArkansasThe Gators are quietly

No Fat People Allowed to Eat in Mississippi: Thank you Big Government

Today, Do-gooder lawmakers in Mississippi have figured out how to help the common man. For all of you who supported smoking bans, this is what you get. In the future, when the government bans something you hold dear, you will have no argument to stop the... Scotty Hopson Still Committed to Mississippi State - Well Sort of!
    2007-12-03 14:27:00
Except for dismal performance agains Darius Mille, Scotty Hopson is off to a good start in his senior season. But there still remains a cloud over his head from his hesitation to sign with Mississippi State during the early sigining period, and the rumors abounding that he is looking for a new school. When asked abotu all of this he answered to a reporter "I'm still committed to Mississippi State".When the reporter asked him how firm his commitment was since he refused to sign with Mississippi State during the weeklong November period, Hopson was quoted as replying with "It's firm. It's firm enough."Yet according to all outside sources he has had some folks on his behalf contact other universities to see if there is still interest in him. According to the article Hopson said that he will entertain recruiting pitches from other schools. How is that sonce he is committed to Mississippi State? He also said that Kentucky has made its interest known. When asked about UK, Hopson responded with something like "maybe in the mix. I can't say right now." Huh?Scotty, look, either you are committed to Mississippi State or not. which is it? We think he is satrting to realize that how he and his family have handled this entire situation leaves a little to be desired. Its like they're out shopping for a better deal but don't want to walk away from Mississippi State because what if they can't find one? He needs to make up his mind and move on. Either he's lookign or he's not.Read entire article here.

LIUNA Says, 'We Put a Man on the Moon - 'We Should Be Able to Cross the Mississippi Safely'
    2007-08-09 05:48:24
Currently a variety of funding sources provide infrastructure funding and all fall short of needs. Oh really? Why should we abandon funds for continuing the war in Iraq and instead channel them towards continuing the war against collapsing bridges, roadways, dams and other infrastructure in the United States?! Isn't having more young Americans being killed more important than this tiny, little, insignificant problem? Get a grip, America. We are better than this. We are being ridiculed for too many reasons already and it is time to turn it around! READ ABOUT THIS HEREPractice non-violence in your lives. You will be leaving your children a beautiful legacy.

    Bridge Falls Into Mississippi River
    2007-08-02 03:04:32
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The entire span of an interstate bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed during evening rush hour Wednesday, sending vehicles, tons of concrete and twisted metal crashing into the water. The Interstate 35W bridge, which spans between Minneapolis and St. Paul, was under construction when it broke into several huge sections. It was not clear how many people were injured. A burning truck and a school bus clung to one slanted slab, while at least eight cars and a truck were submerged in the river. The bus had just crossed the bridge before it crumpled into pieces, and broadcast reports indicated the children on the bus exited out the back door. Dozens of vehicles were scattered and stacked on top of each other amid the rubble. Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge that aren’t completely in the water. Local television stations captured video of injured people being carried up the riverbank. There was no official word on injuries, but dozens of rescue
