Mazda Kazamai concept unveiled ahead of Moscow debut
    2008-07-16 09:50:00
Mazda has unveiled the first official images of the new Kazamai concept ahead of the car's official debut on August 26 at the Moscow International Auto Salon. In Japanese, "Kazamai" means "swirling crosswinds." In English, that means "Nagare-styled compact CUV." If Mazda were to make a small crossover using the Nagare design language, it would probably look something like this. Only with four doors, because we all know that the 2-door configs are just to make the show cars sexier. So, does this mean that Mazda's working on a stylish, downsized CUV to join the ranks of the CX-7 and CX-9? Well, probably, given expensive gas prices and the resurgence of smaller vehicles in general. With any luck, it'll look this cool if and/or when it arrives.PRESS RELEASE:Mazda Kazamai Concept to Premiere at Moscow International Automobile Salon 2008HIROSHIMA, Japan-Mazda will unveil a sporty, compact crossover concept vehicle, Mazda Kazamai, at the Moscow International Automobile Salon (MIAS) on August

    2008-06-01 05:41:00
Tverskaya, a street with the Kremlin at its southern tip, is now the third most expensive place to shop, eclipsed only by New York's Fifth Avenue and the Champs Elysées in Paris. Known as Gorky Street in Soviet times, the resurgence of Tverskaya is another example of the dramatic turnaround in Russia's economy since energy prices began to soar at about the time that Vladimir Putin became president in 2000.Once lined with churches that were destroyed by Stalin and supermarkets known for their queues and empty shelves, Tverskaya is now home to the Moscow outlets of many leading fashion designers as well as Russian oligarchs.

Champions League Beer Shortage: Brits Drink Moscow Dry
    2008-05-23 09:23:24
A common complaint leveled against soccer is that it's boring. Meanwhile, nobody bothers issuing the same critique about baseball, where the guys hawking Amstel get more of a workout running up and down the aisles plying semi-conscious onlookers with cheap suds than the various mesomorphs manning the field and where the play -- which is about as frenetic as a Van Gogh still life -- is interrupted so that a pitcher can practice. No other sport we're aware of, save for highly competitive mobster bocce ball, allows the flow of action to grind to a halt so that one of the participants can get in a proper warm up while eyelids flutter. Basketball players don't stand around while play stops as a guy who previously temperature-controlled the bench with his arse hoists a few shots at the hoop and soccer players don't lounge about so a substitute, who's just finished wowing middle-aged housewives with sideline calisthenics, can come onto the pitch and take a few practice kicks.[Editor's note:

Middle East conference in Moscow may be postponed
    2008-04-23 10:43:00
Much has been written in the Russian media about the visit to Moscow by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas last week, but little has been said about its results - possibly because they were not as impressive as Vladimir Putin's visit to Tripoli. This was Abbas' fourth visit to Moscow since he became president of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA). He talked with everyone on his agenda, namely President Putin, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and other Russian officials, and with some who were not, including Yevgeny Primakov, head of Russia's Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a former premier and foreign minister. Yet, Primakov, a respected Russian Orientalist and an indisputable authority on Arab affairs, could not help Abbas. The Palestinian leader came to Moscow to discuss a Middle East conference expected to take place in June - Primakov is not connected to the conference. The general idea of the conference is to bring everyone involved in the Middle Eastern conflict to

Real estate developers have blamed the huge disparity between construction costs and sale prices for Moscow apartments
    2008-04-21 03:58:00
The average sale price for residential housing in Moscow is currently 161,784 rubles ($6,900) per square meter, while the average building cost is just 34,692 rubles ($1,480), according to a survey by the Federal Construction and Housing Maintenance Agency, published on its web site.Since 2005, sale prices for a square meter of residential housing have climbed 140 percent while construction cost went up only by 64 percent, the report said.Developers generally concurred with the survey's findings, but many said the huge disparity was the result of a combination of official fees and unofficial payments, a euphemism for bribes, to officials and government structures.

Boom in Moscow’s commercial real estate
    2008-04-14 09:35:00
Currently commercial real estate in Moscow - including offices, trade and warehouses - offer the highest yields in Europe. At the same time Russia’s regions are also becoming attractive for investors with long-term strategies.According to Knight Frank research, despite the challenges caused by the global credit crisis, investor interest will only grow.“The German funds, English, Irish investors - all of the people we would see in the emerging markets. I've just come from Dubai. There's a lot of interest in commercial space there, but because it's all sold strata title it's less attractive for the big investors. What we're seeing here is big funds interested in making big purchases,” said Jeremy Oates, Managing Director of Knight Frank Russia and CIS.However, Knight Frank says rents are growing faster in Moscow than anywhere else, bar London. Consequently, rapid growth brings its own risks.Russia's regions serve as a foil to the capital - lacking infrastructure but offering more p

Real estate perspectives for the region of Moscow in 2008
    2008-03-22 10:55:00
As the most fundamental obstacles for real estate in the Moscow region, Voronin identified bureaucracy and the physical scarcity of building materials. Although the production of materials is actively developing, he does not expect to see a breakthrough in the next five years. As a recommendation to private real estate investors in the region, Voronin remarked that currently economy class residential space remains the most liquid with nevertheless a high potential for growth. However, he noted, "A more interesting idea is investment in "gated communities". According to Voronin, these communities carry with them a higher margin of profitability, but their attractiveness depends on the length of the desired commitment, as they are less liquid.

Moscow is ready to OK a new law limiting foreign investment in key sectors
    2008-03-20 06:06:00
The rules for foreign investors in Russia have often been murky. But a landmark new law due to be approved by Russia's parliament on Mar. 22 should at least make matters a little clearer. The Kremlin-backed statute will regulate investment in so-called strategic sectors of the Russian economy, meaning that foreigners will henceforth have to seek government approval if they plan to make significant investments. The law represents the culmination of a trend in recent years toward greater economic restrictions in Russia. The government has noticeably cooled toward foreign investment in sectors deemed to be of strategic importance—notably the crucial energy and minerals segments.

Almost any shopping item you can imagine is cheaper in New York than in Moscow: Clothes, cars, jewelry, furniture, supermarkets and restaurants are considerably cheaper. 200 Skyscrapers Planned for Moscow
    2007-08-11 05:10:17
The $10-billion "Moskva-City" complex of offices, hotels, apartments, restaurants, shops and entertainment centers will have about 25 high-rises, including at least seven buildings taller than any others now existing in Europe. Dominating the site will be the 2,008-foot-tall Russia Tower, which will be one of the tallest buildings in the world and is due for completion in 2012. Most of the rest of the center is to open in 2009 and 2010. The Empire State Building, by comparison, is 1,454 feet tall, including its lightning rod. Capital officials have been working on the Moskva-City project since 1990, but few others took it seriously until the turn of the century. Now, fueled by an oil-based boom in Russia's economy, the 148-acre site is a place of frenzied construction.

Moscow apartment prices were high. But how high exactly?
    2007-07-13 23:56:00
"The price band at the end of the first quarter in 2007 remained rather wide, ranging from $5,000 to $35,000 per square meter in the primary market, and from $6,000 to $40,000 in the secondary market," Litinetskaya told The Moscow News. The apartments offered at the lower end of this price range are located outside the capital's Central district. The highest prices, explains Litinetskaya, are traditionally characteristic of development projects in the downtown Khamovniki district, with buildings in 2nd Zachatyevsky Pereulok and Khilkov Pereulok topping the chart of Moscow's priciest properties for over a year now.

Moscow - World's Most Expensive City
    2007-06-18 08:28:51
Be sure to bring plenty of cash next time you come to Moscow. Mercer Human Resources Consulting, according to the Financial Times, has placed Moscow for the second year in a row at the top of the list of the world's most expensive cities for expatriate employees. The continuing weakness in the dollar made sure that New York would be knocked out of the top 10 in Mercer's list. The top 10 were dominated by European cities, with London claiming the #2 spot, and Geneva, Zurich, Copenhagen, and Oslo closely in pursuit. It must be noted that the survey is not focused on providing figures for an average expense for an average city citizen, rather its goal is to provide a ballpark figure of what an employer would need to be pay an employee in a particular city. The survey is neither a clear picture of the well-being of a city. The basket of goods includes a luxurious two bedroom apartment (presumably in the city center), as well as reasonably high expenditures for clothing and entertainment.Mo

    Moscow Mule
    2007-06-13 03:34:26
If you want to blame one particular drink for the rapid growth of vodka, in North America, look no further than the Moscow Mule. It’s true that the Vodka Martini became the most popular vodka drink initially and spurred the premium vodka category, but it was the Moscow Mule that began the introduction of North Americans to vodka. Whether vodka is the greatest spirit ever, or the bane of bartenders, that’s for you to decide, but the Moscow Mule may be the drink that trumps the Vodka Martini when it comes to flavour. David Johnson in the Moscow News
    2007-04-20 17:01:00
Since the merits of David Johnson and his, in my opinion, indispensable Johnson’s Russia List is such a hot topic of debate, I point readers to his interview in the Moscow News. It is rare that we actually hear what the man behind JRL actually thinks about Russia. Most of the time critics infer his views from the copious numbers of articles he includes (or doesn’t) in his daily newsletter. Here are a couple of responses that I found relevant to the debate: MN: Once you wrote about a news conference at the Kremlin where President Putin spoke to a group of editors and correspondents. What was your impression of Vladimir Putin? DJ: Putin was very impressive in his command of subjects and apparent open-mindedness. I think most of us at these meetings felt this. However, there were certainly critical views expressed about some of Putin's policies. I never got to ask my question so let me do it here: How does President Putin try to insure that he has the best information and mak
