400-hp Aspid roadster coming to London Motor Show
    2008-06-29 08:49:00
While we can't get enough of the Caterham and all its copycats, the one thing we've never said to ourselves is, "This needs a roof, some luxury amenities and 400 horsepower." But that's exactly what IFR Automotive has done with the Aspid. IFR is an acronym for the engineer that founded the firm, Ignacio Fernandez Rodriquez, whose former employers include Prodrive and the Mitsubishi WRC team. Rodriquez wanted to create a track-day masterpiece that would not only confirm to FIA safety standards and European homologation requirements, but also offer a level of luxury and refinement previous unseen on other track-bound whips. The result is a lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber structure that tips the scales at around 1,550 pounds. Two engines will be available when the production model hits the streets later this year, including a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter producing 270 hp, or a 400-hp turbocharged version of the same mill. Power will be sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual

2008 Paris Motor Show: 2010 Chevrolet Volt
    2008-05-20 11:10:00
Having been the buzzword of the 2007 Detroit auto show, we'd figured the production form of the 2010 Chevrolet Volt would make its debut at next year's Detroit show. Not so, says Britain's Channel 4; Chevy's plug-in electric hybrid will bow at the Paris Motor Show in September.Considering the Volt will reportedly be shown in its U.S.-spec trim, its overseas unveiling may seem odd but could prove to be a PR blessing for Chevrolet's European operations. While the Volt may not make it to showrooms across the pond, the crush of journalists from our side of the pond could make Chevrolet's stand one of the busiest at the Paris show. The car may increase attention to other Chevy offerings - most notably a new sedan for Europe, built from the same next-generation Delta platform as the Volt.Europeans shouldn't ignore the car outright; although the Volt itself may not cross the pond, GM has hinted (via Opel and Saab concepts) that its E-Flex hybrid powertrain design just may.Related Posts:+ 2008 Pa

Opel Insignia to Show New Logo in London Motor Show 2008
    2008-05-20 09:23:00
A fresh, bold car requires an equally striking emblem. So when the Insignia debuts in July at the London Motor Show it will sport a refined logo that heralds a new era for Opel in innovation, technology and design.“The Insignia embodies the confident, exciting direction we are taking at Opel,” says Alain Visser, Chief Marketing Officer GM Europe.“And this direction is immediately clear from the polished, even higher class brand emblem. We will naturally use the new emblem from now on in all future models.”The latest logo proudly integrates the Opel name into a wider border that circles the trademark lightning bolt. It has a more sculpted design with spherical surfaces that give the emblem three-dimensional depth.“Capturing that combination of beautifully-sculpted shapes together with German precision is very much consistent with the overall design language and philosophy of our vehicles,” says Mark Adams, Vice President Design, General Motors Europe, who led the team that r

Mazda is finally going to employ the styling cues shown on its Taiki, Ryuga, Hakaze and Furai show cars with a supermini concept, due to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. The concept aims to slot in below the Mazda2 and may be the first production model to benefit from the Nagare design theme. Other models utilizing Laurens van der Acker's swooping and sculpted lines are expected to come to production in 2010, including the redesigned Mazda3.Mazda also plans to unveil a small crossover concept at the Moscow Motor Show later this year, which will likely be based of the Ford Kuga and utilize the same Nagare DNA. This new CUV will be specifically designed for the Russian market, which Mazda maintains could overtake Germany as the largest market in Europe. Audi Q5 to Debut at Beijing Motor Show
    2008-05-04 15:22:00
Audi Q5 dominated the headlines over a month ago when several so-called ‘first images’ of the five-seater SUV found their way through various websites online. It was initially reported to make its world debut at Geneva, but this speculation was quashed when Audi announced its Q7 V12 TDI sometime later instead. After a month of silence, rumours over the debut of the Q5 are now surfacing again.Autoweek reports that the Q5 will be unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show next month, packed with Audi's new seven-speed DSG/S-Tronic. It will be based on Audi’s MLP platform (which apparently will also underpin Porsche’s upcoming five-seater SUV), with a longitudinally placed engine. The new gearbox can handle up to 405 lb-ft of torque and 8,500 rpm of engine revs; and will initially appear in future Quattro models as well as in the new A4, and subsequently in all front-wheel-drive models.

Wiesmann Plans MF4 and MF5 Cabriolet to debut in 2009 Geneva Motor Show
    2008-04-06 02:57:00
The eccentric German specialty marque Wiesmann has told GTSpirit.com during a factory visit that they plan to reveal roadster versions of their GT MF4 and GT MF5 cars at next year's Geneva Motor Show.Until then, the only Wiesmann roadster is their popular GT MF3. The MF3 Roadster is powered by BMW's 3.2 liter inline 6 engine putting 343 horses to the road. The Wiesmann GT MF4 takes power one step further with BMW's 4.8 liter V8 engine producing 367 hp while the new top-of-the-range Wiesmann GT MF5 is powered by BMW's 507 hp 5.0 liter V10 engine.Of course the introduction of the two more powerful Wiesmann roadsters will not effect the GT MF3 Roadster production. All three roadster will be produced side-by-side.Finally, some bad news for the US since Wiesmann cars will not be sold across the pond anytime in the near future. This is due to the bad exchange rate, and high costs of having Wiesmann cars tested, adjusted and approved for US roads.

Artega GT Intro 2008 Model at Geneva Motor Show
    2008-03-17 12:43:00
Artega‘s GT Intro 2008 has come out in Geneva with a few special enhancements over its normal GT model these fittings are quite a number on the list, so we’ll touch on just a few. These include two distinct colours of Vanilla Yellow and Deep Sea Blue, the latter seen in these fine pictures.Artega has chosen to go classical with the Intro 2008 models, especially inside where things may appear basic, but are beneath the surface quite sophisticated.Forged lightweight wheels roll in Michelin tyres measuring 8“ x 19“ by the front side with 235/35 ZR 19 tyres and 10.5“ x 19“ at the back with 305/30 ZR 19 tyres.Driver assistance is standard with ABS, however, the traction control system will only kick in in the spring of 2009. Artega GT works with a 3.6-litre V6 that does 220kW on the dyno using a 6-speed direct transmission gearbox to achieve its 0 – 100km/h time of under 5 seconds. It will only run out of breath at 270km/h. All 99 examples of this car are priced at €79,790/

Geneva Motor Show 2008: production Ford Kuga
    2008-03-10 07:53:00
Kinetic design has been swallowing Ford of Europe's product range whole, and took a big bite at this year's Geneva Motor Show. Alongside the new Fiesta, Ford showed off the production version of the all-new Kuga crossover. Previewed by the concept unveiled at the last Frankfurt show and drawing on styling cues from the Iosis X show car, the Kuga is based on the same platform as the slicker Focus they get overseas.Although the Kuga is admittedly one more European model that Ford won't offer in its home market, we're not short of Ford crossovers to choose from over here, so we'll let the Europeans have this one. (Just give us the Focus RS and we'll be happy.) But to see what we're missing, check out our gallery of images from the Geneva show floor by clicking on the thumbnails below. Unfortunately, although we're sure the Kuga rolled off its turntable at night after we were gone and duked it out with the Renault Koleos for market share, we couldn't prove it.

Geneva Motor Show 2008: updated Alfa Romeo 159
    2008-03-10 07:47:00
We had plenty of reason to frequent the Alfa Romeo pavilion at this year's Geneva Motor show. After the unveiling of the production 8C Spider along with the updated Brera and Spider came the revisions to the 159 sedan and Sportwagon.Like its two-door counterparts, the changes to the 159 consist of a few small updates that don't interfere with the model's stunning lines. Better ergonomics and new electronics update the interior, while weight reduction where the car meets the road should help the car's driving dynamics slightly. Most importantly, however, the tweaks which Alfa Romeo announced for the 159 range gave us and our cameras another reason, as if we needed one, to get reacquainted with one of our favorite European sports sedans and wagons. Geneva Motor Show 2008: Ferrari One-to-One personalization program
    2008-03-10 07:45:00
Show-stopping new production cars and concepts were not lacking in Geneva this year. There were so many, in fact, that we struggled to take it all in. Yet while Ferrari didn't have any new models to show us, somehow we couldn't help but slow down in front of its booth as we rushed from press conference to press conference. Maybe it was the classic Daytona sitting next to the 612 Scaglietti bathed in soft light, or maybe the pair of lookers standing next to them. Guess we'll never know, but you can feast your eyes on all the sexy models in the gallery below. What Ferrari did unveil at the Swiss show, however, was a new customization program. Called One-to-One, the program takes the catalog of options under the existing Carrozzeria Scaglietti Programme a step further. Geneva Motor Show 2008: Renault Koleos clocks in for work
    2008-03-07 06:10:00
Renault pulled out all the stops for this year's Geneva Motor Show, taking the wraps off the swoopy Megane Coupe concept, as well as debuting the Twingo Renaultsport, Laguna GT and this, the Koleos crossover. Although closely based on mechanicals borrowed from sister-company Nissan, the Koleos is far more of a complete project than that other pair of French sport-utes from archrival PSA Peugeot-Citroen.The Koleos shared center stage with the Megane Coupe this week, outlining how important the new model is to Renault. This is its first proper foray into the sport-ute segment, finally surrendering when the French automaker realized the crossover craze would not be subsiding any time soon. When you can't beat 'em, join 'em, the saying goes, but push come to snooty shove, Renault actually appears to have done a decent job.

Geneva Motor Show 2008: Lotus adds Europa SE for 2008
    2008-03-05 08:08:00
As we reported earlier, Lotus has a new range of Europas for 2008, at least in their eponymous market. Still not coming to the States as far as we've heard, but with the "Eagle" already soaring, we think we can wait. Not that the Europa is a bad car, but the new model should be even better. Until the Eagle lands, however, the European market still has the perfectly adequate Europa and a new Europa SE. The Europa SE is here in Geneva and it has some spiffy new wheels, 17-inch in front, 18-inch out back. It's painted in a sort of monochrome fashion that makes us think of the '80s for some reason too. There's also a real (for Lotus at least) interior that is swathed in leather. The idea was to make it a bit more comfortable for the few people who are thinking of purchasing one. The car's 2.0L turbo four remains basically the same, but here it's tuned to 225 hp and 221 lb.-ft. of torque. Expect a 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds and a top end of 143. While the new entry level Europa will start at

2008 Geneva Motor Show: Land Rover LRX is back... in black
    2008-03-05 07:52:00
Segments keep blending and niches keep growing. We don't complain, though, when the results are as stunning as the LRX concept. Land Rover brought a second version of the show car to Geneva in a sharp new black-and-silver paintjob that would be our first choice for arriving at the Academy Awards if they were held on the moon. Hopefully the LRX is less pie-in-the-sky than that, though, because we want one. Or two.As sinisterly handsome as the carbon LRX looks from afar, the devil is in the details, which include such subtle modern touches as brushed-aluminum badging, grille, roof, vents and the like. And we like. Check out the images in the gallery below to see for yourself, and the details in our previous post.

Lotus Exige 270E TriFuel at Geneva Motor Show
    2008-03-02 14:38:00
Interesting times indeed for the world that even a purist automaker like Lotus is getting ready to mesmerise mother nature as it reveals the Exige 270E Tri-fuel. Tri-fuel runs on methanol, bioethanol and petrol/gasoline. It has a top Vbox reading of 255km/h, having dispatched the 0 - 100km/h time in 3.88 seconds. Both methanol and bioethanol contain a significant amount of pure alcohol, which basically means the more your car can drink, the better life will be for the environment. Lotus is betting that this happens, particularly in sync with widespread availability of the fuels worldwide. This is the part that might hamper the Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel’s progress. The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel dons a 1.8-litre engine which, with the help of a mechanical blower (aka supercharger), dispenses 270 bhp – hence the name – or 201kW at 8000rpm and 260Nm, making it the most potent road Lotus out there. Lotus will unveil the covers off a 270E Tri-fuel at Geneva in the next couple of days.Pre

2008 Geneva Motor Show: Morgan LIFECar Concept
    2008-03-02 03:19:00
Morgan's heavily-hyped hyrdogen fuel cell prototype renderings and details had been revealed several weeks before, and now, just one weeks ahead of the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, Morgan is sharpening things up in anticipation of its LIFECar conept.Hydrogen gas powers a four-stack PEM fuel cell made by QinetiQ that generates 22kW of electricity, emitting only water and heat, which means zero tailpipe emissions. Of course that neglects the emissions in producing the hydrogen, but that’s beside the point. The QinetiQ fuel cell operates at 45% efficiency, which represents a substantial advance over the efficiency of combustion engine technology where much more of the energy is wasted as heat. The electric power is delivered to the wheels via four independent motors that are also capable of regenerative braking. Unlike current systems which recapture only about 10% of the kinetic energy through regenerative braking, Morgan claims the LIFECar’s four motors enable it to recover nearly 50% of t

The Mazda2 Extreme, fourth model in the line of 'extreme' cars created by Mazda Motorsport in Australia, is unveiled at the 2008 Melbourne Motor Show. Mazda Motorsport chief Allan Horsley said that “this was a surprisingly challenging Extreme car to do, however, the Mazda2 Extreme engine is still under development, and the plan is to increase the car's 'real world' performance by at least 20%.Starting with such an agile car really put the pressure on when it came to improving its real-world abilities.” Current modifications include a three-inch sports exhaust that gives the car better airflow and a more appropriate soundtrack for a car with ‘Extreme’ in its name. The 5-speed manual remains untouched and the car is still a front-wheel-drive number, although the suspension has been redesigned by an Australian suspension tuning expert to withstand the rigors of a full-blown rally. This includes custom 15-inch Potenza rally tires and lightweight alloy wheels sitting underneath sports

Geneva Motor Show 2008: Italdesign Giugiaro Quaranta finally revealed in full

Italdesign Giugiaro has been releasing teaser images of its Quaranta concept at an agonizingly slow pace for weeks now, but has finally dropped all its got on the car just days before it will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. The Quaranta is actually inspired by the 1968 Bizzarrini Manta concept, and the two take the wedge shape to an extreme. The Quaranta's claim to fame is that it houses a mid-mounted hybrid powertrain supplied by a Toyota. The 3.3L V6 combined with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive produces a combined 268 horsepower and 212 pound feet of torque, which Italdesign claims is good for a 4.05 second run to 62 mph in the lightweight and perfectly balanced Quaranta. At the same time, its pair of fuel tanks integrated into the frame can hold nearly 16 gallons of fuel, good for a 621-mile range. The entire opaque roof is also comprised of solar panels, which run the interior electronics and charge the batteries. The concept can employ two- or all-wheel-drive depending on the

Geneva Motor Show 2008 Preview: First Fiat 500 Abarth official images leaked
    2008-02-18 07:38:00
This morning, we brought you a Fiat-provided doodle showing a super-deformed 500 Abarth meant to give us a gist of what to expect when the Italian automaker pulls the cover off the Scorpion-emblazoned performance variant. What we didn't expect was that we'd be seeing official images on the same day we posted the sketch. Thanks to Carscoop (and one of its generous readers), we've got exactly that. The first four (of many, we're sure) official images show the Nuova 500 dressed in the equivalent of a tracksuit and running shoes, with a full bodykit consisting of a new front spoiler, side skirts, and rear bumper with a nifty-looking diffuser insert through which a pair of rolled exhaust tips peek. Black, Scorpion-emblazoned 5-spoke wheels with silver and red accents sit inside the hot hatch's flared fenders, while the endlessly-cool Abarth shield adorns the nose, rear quarters, and hatchback lid. Flashes of red make their way onto the rearview mirrors, brake calipers, and side stripes, too.

Leakage: Volvo XC60 shots hit the 'Net before 2008 Geneva Motor Show

The rear end also closely resembles the concept's, complete with the shapely rear LED taillamps and curved hatch. When the XC60 goes on sale, it's expected to be packing a combination of gasoline and diesel powerplants, including a 1.8-liter, 2.5-liter turbo and 3.2-liter six.

When you're talking about the Bugatti Veyron, more power than the stock 1,001 hp just isn't the answer, so the super-upscale automaker is looking to pile on even more luxury on the inside. Bugatti is tapping into its history to once again team up with Hermès on a ultra high-end interior package. Geneva Motor Show 2008 Preview: Chevy Aveo 3-door

Chevy has completed the Aveo facelifts and will introduce the updated Euro-market 3-door at the Geneva Motor Show next month. You can sum it up like this: it's like the Aveo5, minus the doors for second-row passengers. The rear windows pop open for ventilation and an 84-horse 1.2L or step-up 1.4L that generates 101 hp will supply power. The interior styling carries over, as do the exterior visuals that share the Aveo5's gigantic grille, fake fender vents, and the like. If this were offered in the US, it might make a nice alternative to the Yaris Liftback -- also a 3-door. Keep one eye on the sky to watch for those flying pigs. [Source: GM]

2008 Chicago Motor Show: 2009 Ford Edge Sport
    2008-02-07 22:39:00
Ford officially rolled out the 2009 Edge Sport at the Chicago Auto Show, and while the moniker might be dubious, it is at least a nicely done factory tuner. The 2009 Ford Edge Sport is not the return of the GMC Typhoon, or a Porsche Cayenne for those with average credit scores. In this case, "Sport" refers not to sports car handling or pretensions. Instead, this "Sport" is sporty in the same way that a Mercury Grand Marquis is "Grand" or a Buick Century Limited was "Limited."The idea behind the Edge Sport is to create a tuner package with factory-backed quality levels. Check out the live shots and you'll see that the already well-trimmed interior gets an extra level of attention, and the bodykit applied to the outside is tasteful.New paint colors are Sport-exclusive, as are smoked lenses on the lights. The biggest feature that Ford is touting are the monstrous wheels wrapped in low-profile rubber. The standard 20-inchers are enough to give the brake rotors an inferiority complex as they a

2008 Geneva Motor Show: Loremo Cabrio
    2008-01-11 07:50:00
Loremo, the German automaker, will unveil its Loremo Convertible, or Cabrio, at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, after the coupe was showcased at last year's Geneva Motor show. For those of you who enjoy looking at, not to say drive, those neat futuristic cars with the cool aerodynamics, you will be happy to learn that the Loremo (LOw REsistance MObile) sedan is slated for release in 2009.The Loremo Cabrio specification is amazing: 20-HP in the 2-cylinder turbodiesel LS version, 0-60 in 9 seconds, a top speed of 122-MPH, a weight of 990 pounds, a Cd of .20, and 150-computer-simulated-MPG.Of course the Loremo -- coupe or convertible -- isn't for everyone. The point of the car is to offer style (take that any way you wish), a modicum of luxury, and fuel-sipping economy at a prices between $13,000 and $18,000.The convertible would probably have a slightly higher Cd and therefore slightly worse gas mileage, but if you just get 100-MPG, that'd be all right, no?The convertible version would also probably be easier to get into than sliding over the fenders of the tilt-forward-canopy coupe. The Loremo Cabrio is expected to bow at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show.Nissan Small Car Closer to Chrysler For North AmericaNAIAS 2008 Leak: Hummer HX Concept2008 Nissan Note On Sales Jan.16 in JA http://del.icio.us/rss/horisly
