During the development of the electric Roadster, Tesla ran into some development problems with the car's transmission. The car was originally slated to get a two-speed unit supplied by X-Trac, but that unit had durability issues so Tesla turned to Magna. Tesla subsequently decided not to use the Magna unit and developed its own before eventually deciding on a single speed unit (ultimately the car's electric motor had to be altered).
