A scam Letter targeting people who want to become mystery shoppers claims you've been selected to represent the company as a mystery shopper and there are no registration fees. Instead, cashier checks are enclosed made out for several thousand dollars. The instructions; cash the check, keep $200 and wire the rest back to the company. The only problem; the money's left your account and the check is a fake. There are legitimate mystery shopping companies. In fact, the Mystery Shoppers Providers Association tells us they estimate there are more than one million mystery shoppers in the United States alone. We talked to one mystery shopping company for advice on how to avoid scams. They said you don't need to pay anything up front to get the assignment and it's difficult to get the assignments; it's competitive. So here are my tips to getting things done. A couple of them you'll need to do before you even get started signing up for mystery shopping companies.1. Set up a New Email Address Since you'll need to sign up with as many companies as possible in order to maximize your income opportunities to get mystery shopping assignments, the first thing you should do is set up a new email account and only use that account for work. Since I do retail merchandising and some online 'get paid to" stuff as well, I use one gmail account for all three and then set up labels for the different types of work I do. I have labels for "mystery shopping", "merchandising" and "paid surveys" (I just lump all the "get paid to" stuff under that). I also have labels for "pending" and "completed". This way when I check my email each day, I can quickly scan what I need to do next without hunting through the dozens of emails. If you set up the account to automatically route mail from certain email addresses to a particular label, all of your new mail will be prelabeled as it arrives.2. Get some Form Filler software You will be signing up with a lot of companies. Some mystery shoppers sign up with over 100. It is very tedious and time consuming to do all of this by hand, so get yourself some form completion software and use it. I personally use Roboform because it doesn't have any spyware or adware installed with it, but there are lots of different form completer's available.3. Organize your bookmarks Some of the mystery shopping companies always send out emails with newly available assignments, but a lot of them don't so you'll need to log into their websites every day in order to get your jobs. They are the crazy internet group behind the MTC. Post an entry, vote, maybe win, and you may be selecting the next topic. It's like a blog party. Click here to join. Mr. President barely edged out Romi for a win on the last Mystery Topic Challenge. On the 6th, he announced the next topic for the challenge: If you were President/Prime Minister for a day, with the power to do absolutely anything (Supreme Court? What Supreme Court?), what would you do and why? I've been spending most of the time between then and now trying to figure out exactly what I might want to do for that single day that might actually be worth doing. There are any number of things that one might be able to accomplish by having ultimate power for a single day, but I think the most meaningful would be something that would have a lasting impact. If you are only president for the day, sure you could repeal executive orders or make new ones, but they might only last for just the day. That definitely helped me narrow down the list. There are only a few things that a president could actually do that another president couldn't overturn, at least not readily. There are pardons. I've never heard of any presidential pardons being overturned at a later date. Of course, I don't really know of any prisoners, political or otherwise, that I would want to pardon, so that is kind of out as an option. I could start a war, that's certainly something that the next president after me couldn't easily undo. I don't really want to start a war with another country, though.
