| | | Toyota will give $5m and 23 vehicles to National Park support organizations | | 2008-04-30 06:01:00 | | At the end of March, when Toyota announced they would give $20m to the National Audubon Society, there was a bit of an uproar. Turns out, Toyota customers were not happy with the works that Audubon was doing to close down certain nature areas to visitors. The PR trouble isn't stopping Toyota from continuing to give money to groups that are looking after the land.Toyota announced today that it will donate a total of $5m and 23 vehicles to various U.S. National Parks. The donations will be used "to enhance environmental leadership and educational programs at parks around the country," according to Toyota's release (read it in full after the jump). The national parks at the Everglades, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and the Great Smoky Mountains will all see some of the money and were selected based on their work in teaching about the environment, particularly to students and teachers, and to people in inner-city and Native American communities.Press Release:Toyota Announces $5 Million Grant | | By: Car News | | |

| | Rinjani National Park | | 2007-12-21 02:27:00 | | There over 20 villages surround Mt. Rinjani and there are many routes up the mountain, but the main access is from Senaru in the north and Sembalun Lawang to the east. The challenging three-day Rinjani Trek route from Senaru to the crater rim (Plawangan), down to the stunning crater lake then on to Sembalun Lawang, is considered one of the best treks in South East Asia. Those heading for the summit usually prefer to start in Sembalun Lawang.A model for ecotourism in Indonesia, the community-based activities are focused on the Rinjani Trek Centre in Senaru, the most popular starting point for the tough trek. Developed with New Zealand Government assistance since 1999, the Rinjani Trek Centre embodies under one roof (satu atap) the unique partnership of the National Park, tourism industry and local communities that has been forged to manage and protect the Rinjani mountain environment. What You Might SeeGunung Rinjani National Park lies within the major transition zone (Wallacea) where the flora and fauna of South East Asia makes a dramatic transition into that which is typical of Australasia. The Park has a rich variety of plants and animals, although they can be hard to spot due to the terrain and rainforest cover.Sometimes seen early in the mornings is the rare black Ebony leaf monkey, known locally as Lutung. The Long tailed grey macaque or Kera is common in Lombok and older males are seen on the crater rim. Rusa deer are forest dwellers and are occasionally seen along the Rinjani trek trail. The smaller Barking deer or Kijang has an alarm call with a distinct dog-like bark. Look for the disturbed ground where the Wild pig or Babi hutan has been foraging. Also found in the forest is the Leopard cat or Bodok alas, Palm civet or Ujat and Porcupine or Landak.A variety of colourful birds live in the forests of the Park. Perhaps the best-known icon of the Park is the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo that is not found any further west of Lombok. | | | Khao Sok National Park | | 2007-04-20 03:32:00 | | Imagine walking through a 180 million year old rainforest, the morning filled with the sound of gibbons calling across the canopy above. You reach a clearing and your guide tells you to be quiet and look to the sky. There you see a hornbill flying low as it searches for food in the jungle below. In Khao Sok this experience an almost daily occurrence.Khao Sok National Park is the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world. It predates the Amazon and can be traced back in time as far as 180 million years when it was part of a great river delta protected by a coral reef six times longer than the Great Barrier Reef. Part of a protected area that covers almost 4,000 sqm of south Thailand, Khao Sok is home to some of Asia’s rarest flora and fauna including the world’s largest flower, the rare Rafflesia Kerrii. Trekking is the best way to experience the beauty of the area. Several trails lead from the park headquarters into the jungle following jungle paths that take you to waterfalls or caves. Walking under the shade of giant fig and rattan trees, your guides will be on the constant look out for gibbons, hornbills and other wildlife, while monkeys are seen often. Deeper into the park you will find Chao Lam Lake. Created in 1982 when the Rachabrapha dam was built, Chao Lam is famous for the giant limestone Karst Mountains that rise mystically from the water to heights of over 100 meters. Part of a topographical chain that stretches from Phang Nga Bay near Phuket to Guilin in China and also occurs in Vang Vieng in Laos and Halong Bay in Vietnam, the mountains of Chao Lam are one of the travel world’s best kept secrets. A longtail boat ride across the lake in the early morning is an unforgettable experience as the waters reflect the giant limestone mountains creating magical memories. When the area was flooded, several villages were lost and 100 metres below the waters are complete communities. Day 29- Sunday, July 13:
We chilled out this morning, then around 4, Laura, Beth and I rode up to Grand Teton National Park. We drove through it for a while until we got to a spot called Jenny Lake, which featured, of all things, a lake. We took a boat across the lake and hiked up to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Since it was by now after 6pm, the weather was cool and the trail was empty, so the hiking was quite nice. After we were duly inspired by the point, we headed back around the lake and were treated to some breathtaking views of The Tetons.
I was going to climb up to the top of The Grand Teton and fly down on my portable hang glider, but we would have been late for dinner. And since dinner was pizza, no one would have wanted that. We went to an Italian restaurant in Jackson called the Old Yellowstone Garage. It was all-you-can-eat pizza night, which meant that you paid per person and the wait staff just kept ci | | By: The Frog Bog | | |

Day 22-Sunday, July 6:
We started out by riding the gondola up to the top of Whistler.
There was still plenty of snow, and many skiers and snowboarders were there to take part in their summertime(?) recreation. I was feeling much better and it was nice to see something besides the inside of a hotel room at Whistler. I did get a little bummed out watching all the mountain bikers zooming down the slopes as I had hoped to. But we enjoyed the scenery and I got sunburned. We then picked up Plato, who seemed perfectly content with where she was and a little put out by having to leave with us. After Plato decided she would grace us with her presence, we headed over the border back into Washington. We camped for the night at Birch Bay State Park, where we took in yet another stunning sunset.
