Playing Native American Flutes For A Unique Spiritual Journey
    2008-08-04 00:00:00
Native American flutes are extremely popular for use in ceremonies and rituals, or as home decor collection pieces. I have always enjoyed Native flute music for its pleasing sound quality and ability to bring a tranquil calm to the atmosphere where it is played. Hearing Native flutes always reminds me of my mother’s kitchen where [...]

Native American Style Sterling Silver Dreamcatcher Turquoise Feather Hook Earrings
    2007-09-10 04:08:00
In Native American culture, a dreamcatcher is a handmade object based on a hoop (traditionally of willow), incorporating a loose net, and decorated with items unique to the particular dreamcatcher. There is a traditional belief that a dreamcatcher filters a person's dreams, letting through only the good ones.Dreamcatchers are an authentic American Indian tradition, from the Ojibway (Chippewa) tribe. They would tie sinew strands in a web around a small round or tear-shaped frame--in a somewhat similar pattern to how they tied webbing for Ojibway snowshoes--and hang this "dream-catcher" as a charm to protect sleeping children from nightmares. The legend is that the bad dreams will get caught in the web.

    Native American Jewelry Artists
    2007-09-05 14:44:07
I just love Native American jewelry. I guess it's my Cherokee heritage. I am awed by their workmanship and artistry. And these jewelry artists are prolific. Most of them have dozens of pieces—bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. I found so many beautiful pictures, I'm going to split this into two posts. I hope they inspire you. Before the Europeans came to American shores, native metalwork was fairly simple, consisting primarily of hammering and etching copper into pendants or earrings, and fashioning copper and silver into beads. After Navajo, Hopi, and Pueblo artists learned silversmithing from the Spanish in the 1800's, metal jewelry arts flourished in the Southwest. Distinctive Native American jewelry developed from the combination of new techniques with traditional designs. Sterling Cuff Bracelet with Natural Inlaid Turquoise and Coral Hopi Jewelry Artist: Danny SuppleeDanny learned his art from his brother Charles Supplee, who was heavily influenced (as was Charles Lolama—see my previous post) by master jeweler Pierre Touraine, who spent years among Southwestern (particularly Hopi) silversmiths. He taught European jewelry making techniques to many of the best silversmiths. That set in motion many of the European influenced designs seen in Indian jewelry today. The Supplees are considered among the top jewelers living today. Their work is highly collected. Gold Channel Inlay Bracelet with Charoite, Coral,

    Encyclopedia of Native American Healing
    2007-07-27 17:44:00
Author: William S. LyonPaperback: 373 pagesPublisher: ABC-Clio Inc (December 1996)Language: EnglishISBN: 0874368529Lyon (social welfare, Univ. of Kansas) here offers an excellent overview of shamanic healing, a topic that has been largely ignored in the reference literature. How Native Americans used medicinal plants is not treated, but to compensate Lyon includes an ethnobotany bibliography with 44 citations. Alphabetically arranged entries include the tribal origin of the topic as well as a culture area, which is keyed to the 15 maps so that readers can identify the location of a tribe's territory. One notable omission from the Southeast map is the Seminoles, whom the text repeatedly locates in that culture area. Recommended for academic collections in anthropology or Native American studies.
