| In the Hills of Nebraska, Change Is on the Horizon | | 2008-08-04 07:45:42 | | This Land By DAN BARRY : AINSWORTH, Neb.
Driving south out of the agricultural town of Ainsworth, you can’t miss its newest crop: wind turbines, three dozen of them, with steel stalks 230 feet high and petal-like blades 131 feet long, sprouting improbably from the sand hills of north-central Nebraska, beside ruminating cattle.

| Japanese Barnstorming in North America, Including Nebraska | | 2008-06-27 15:18:40 | | Another presentation I watched at SABR 38 was about the 1935 barnstorming tour of the Tokyo Giants. The baseball team toured North America in the summer of ‘35, playing over 100 games over the course of 120 days. They went 74-31-1 playing minor-league, semi-pro and club teams from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The police spokesman said they are ever vigilant and on the lookout for wedgies here. [...] | | By: Where the Boggs are Always Cold | | |

| New Nebraska Network jacks N64 logo for their own use | | 2008-03-24 16:54:29 | | Oh, New Nebraska Network. Did nobody inform you about copyright infringement? Of course not. Otherwise, you wouldn't have co-opted the N64 logo into your own. Naughty naughty! And what is the NNN about? Well, they've been around since March of 2005 and "has been the state's premiere source of progressive online political commentary and community-building." Being gamers, we're a bit wary of political stuff, because politicians often take up the cause that video games are a bad influence. Looks like they may have their first proof of that.[Thanks, Michael!]

| | Obama crushes Clinton in Washington and Nebraska; Louisiana polls closing momentarily | | 2008-02-09 19:58:00 | | Barack Obama has won, and won big already tonight in Washington and Nebraska. The polls in Louisiana are scheduled to close in about two minutes at 9pm. While the Democratic delegates are proportional, Obama has won so big in both Nebraska and Washington (around 70% or so so far) that Clinton likely won't get too much out of either state. Obama is expected to win Louisiana as well.
UPDATE: CNN reports that based on exit polling Barack Obama is ahead of Hillary Clinton in the LA primary.
UPDATE II: NBC news is reporting the Republican Louisiana primary is "too close to call."
UPDATE III: Mike Huckabee leading John McCain in Louisiana 44% to 38% with 11% reporting while Obama leading Clinton 52% to 38% with 10% reporting. In Washington state McCain is leading Huckabee 27% to 26% while Ron Paul is pulling about 21% with 16% reporting.

| | Short Piece on 83 Nebraska | | 2008-01-25 12:12:00 | | What many billed the greatest college football game ever played resulted in Miami's first national championship and the beginning of a 25 year dynasty in college football. However, what most forget is that on the other side of the field was a Nebraska team that many were calling the best college team of all time.To get a grasp on just how hyped that Nebraska team was, it helps (because they involved the same two programs) to think of the expectations leading up to the 2002 Rose Bowl. Granted, that Miami team was supposedly suspect against the option run, but you get the picture.Today, ESPN's E-Ticket focuses on athletes and teams that fell just short of immortality and perfection. Eric Neel's section on Nebraska gives us excellent insight into the Cornhuskers' mentality before and after the game. It makes for an interesting read and makes me recall the similar reactions of Canes players after the 2003 Fiesta Bowl (which might I remind you, never happened). | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Sales Tax Holiday Proposal in Nebraska Makes a Bad Idea Even Worse | | 2008-01-14 00:00:00 | | Sales tax holidays are not good tax policies for various reasons. They create distortions in consumption over time, huge compliance cost issues for businesses which can disproportionately affect small businesses, and they often create uncertainty regarding which items are exempt and when. In reality, they are just political gimicks where politicians try to buy people's votes with a small tax cut so that they can say "we cut taxes." But one legislator in Nebraska is taking the degree of terribleness of sales tax holidays to a whole new level by trying to legally dictate the economic incidence of the short-term tax cut. (Governor Doyle, you now have company.) From the Associated Press:A state lawmaker has proposed a new state holiday that would be celebrated by penny-pinching Nebraskans.Senator Rich Pahls of Omaha wants a 3-day moratorium on the state sales tax during the first week of every August, a popular time for parents to buy school supplies. Similar legislative proposals have fallen flat before. But Pahls put a twist on the bill he introduced Wednesday.Stores would not have to participate in the holiday. And even if they did, they could choose which items to exempt from the sales tax. Finally, while customers would not have to pay the tax on the items, businesses would still have to pay the tax to the state. That would address concern that a sales tax holiday could hurt state revenue. The two final paragraphs of the AP story basically say it all in terms of how ridiculous this proposal is. | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| | The Omaha Nebraska Shooting Massacre | | 2007-12-07 18:30:01 | |
Since my feelings echo Mr. Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, I've decided to post his heartfelt comments as they relate to this devastating event in Nebraska:“Our sympathies and prayers go to the families of the eight who died and the five who were wounded in yesterday’s mall shooting in Omaha.“Having a military-style assault rifle and high-capacity ammunition clips enabled a troubled young man to kill and injure a large number of people quickly and efficiently. Allowing the easy acquisition and possession of military-style weapons like this is foolhardy and the results are tragic. “We need to find out how and where the killer got this gun and this ammunition. We need to stop selling military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips to civilians. The killer knew what he was going to do, and he knew what tools he needed. Our weak gun laws make these killing machines readily available. We can take steps to prevent tragedies like this in the future.” First step? address youth violence or pay dearly later as this CNN news article clearly states so eloquently. Second step? outlaw all guns and only allow less than lethal weapons to be used in America.Third step? work on implementation of all known security systems, including a national ID card for every individual in America.Fourth step? implement the gun data base mental health system link NOW. In addition I would like to direct you to this post written by fellow blogger Marc McDonald of BeggarsCanBeChoosers.com. The post is entitled, Ban On AK-47 Assault Rifle Used In Omaha Mall Rampage Was Lifted By GOP Congress In 2004 and Marc, you've said a mouthful with your excellent post.READ ABOUT THIS HEREPractice non-violence in your lives. | | Nebraska +19 vs Kansas | | 2007-11-02 23:13:00 | | Nebraska had won 36 in a row vs Kansas before 2005. They have split the last two years, so Nebraska has won a meager 37 of the last 38 in this series. Now they are 20 point underdogs to the Jayhawks in Lawrence… in football!!! I can believe this line in basketball, but football? I know that Nebraska has not been relative on the national championship scene since 2002, but Kansas has not been on the national scene since the 1950s.Throw in that Tom Osborne said on air this week that there will be a new coaching staff next year [to decide the fate of the walk on program] and you have a sinking ship (or cornhusker). I know, I know – Nebraska only lost by 3 in Austin last week, but I am not sold on Texas either by any means. Texas hasn’t been impressive in any game since their loss to Texas AM last year. Kansas can take out years of frustration on Nebraska this Saturday and Bill Callahan doesn’t strike me as a “rah rah”, Win One for the Gipper type coach. | | Hey! You in Nebraska, Pay Attention! Pirates @ Cubs 12:05 CDT | | 2007-09-22 18:05:49 | | I know, I know. It's college gameday. But there's baseball game on, too.
So even though we won yesterday and Ramirez scored approximatley ten million runs in the processs, PECOTA now thinks we have LESS of a chance of making the post-season than we did yesterday. So, on behalf of the entire site, PECOTA, you're not our best-friend anymore.
On the other hand, most of us are feeling downright chipper today. Yes, OGDJM! completely ignored my plea to keep the sucakge to minimum, but the bottom line is that this team found a way to win (namely, waiting for Ramirez to hit two near-grand slams) though the game featured such paragons of craptacular baseball as Will Ohman, Matt Murton, Ronny Cedeno, and OGDJM. Lest we've all forgotten, there was a time this season when Will Ohman entering the game was the unequivocal death knell for this team. I still cover my face with a pillow when he comes into a game, but at least I don't get up and head to the mall anymore.

| | Giants take chance on Nebraska lineman | | 2007-07-18 19:48:34 | | Interesting move by Giants GM Jerry Reese Tuesday, signing Nebraska offensive lineman Chris Patrick. Patrick was generally considered the third-best player available in the supplemental draft last week, but was bypassed. The 6-foot-4, 296-pound Patrick apparently impressed the Giants during a Tuesday workout and was quickly offered a contract. Here's a scouting report on Patrick from NFL Draft Countdown. Strengths: Adequate strength...Physical and plays with a nasty demeanor...A decent athlete and moves well...Versatile and could play multiple positions...Has the frame to get bigger...Is coming off a very good junior campaign...Still has quite a bit of upside. Weaknesses: Undersized and doesn't have the ideal bulk that you look for...Will likely have to make a position change at the next level...Relatively new to the position and has some work to do when it comes to technique...Just 1 year of starting experience. Notes: Actually began his college career as a defe | | By: Big Blue View | | |
