New Hampshire Governor’s Race Fundraising Numbers
    2008-08-21 19:58:21
The fund-raising numbers are out from the campaigns of both Governor John Lynch and his challenger, Republican Joe Kenney, and it isn’t pretty. I suppose I will share with you the dismal news. The New Hampshire for John Lynch ‘08 Committee reported taking in $1,232,088 to date, compared to the GOP hopeful, state Sen. Joseph Kenney, who [...]

New Hampshire Governor Challenged by Opponent to Sign Spending Cap Pledge
    2008-08-09 20:24:44
The Republican candidate for governor recently signed a spending cap pledge and challenged liberal tax and spend governor John Lynch (tephlon John) to do the same. The tephlon one has refused to do so. John Lynch could never agree to limit spending, we have seen that over the last two years. He spent the [...]

A weekend of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts
    2008-08-05 12:57:27
It was 4 PM, and we were standing beside our car on the lawn in front of Amy’s dorm at Heifetz. We were eating doughnuts. My mom and I had traveled over nine hours from Ithaca to Wolfeboro– including an unintended hour-long detour to Saratoga (”Hey, it’s Lake Luzerne!”)– Amy had been waiting for us nearly [...]

Latest Poll Irks New Hampshire Democrats
    2008-07-24 19:14:27
Cross posted on Grizzly Groundswell I have to say it has been a very interesting few days to watch and read about New Hampshire politics. First we had the story about the New Hampshire Advantage Coalition who are making great gains in getting tax cap legislation on to the November ballots in several key cities. [...]

Libertarian Bob Barr Campaigns in Manchester New Hampshire
    2008-07-23 21:19:18
Poor ole John McCain, he can’t catch a break. First he has to deal with the Obamagasms of the main-stream media as President Obama tours the middle east, and now as he visits New Hampshire the headlines are stolen by Bob Barr, the former Republican turned Libertarian presidential candidate. Oh well.  Bob Barr is polling [...]

Latest New Hampshire Senate and House Poll (Are Happy Days Here Again?)

Cross posted on Grizzly Groundswell  I really am trying to curb my enthusiasm over the latest New Hampshire poll results in the Shaheen?Sununu race and the Bradley/Stephen/Shea-Porter races. Anti-Tax Groups Gaining Momentum in New Hampshire?
    2008-07-22 19:46:02
There have been a couple of anti-tax groups that have begun to flex their muscles here in New Hampshire. The one I am writing about today is called the New Hampshire Advantage Coalition and they have been very active in trying to get tax cap legislation on the ballot in several locations this November.  Their effort [...]

Libertarian Bon Barr Won’t Head the Party’s Ticket in New Hampshire
    2008-07-20 20:43:48
National Libertarian candidate Bob Barr won’t head the ticket on New Hampshire ballots come November. New Hampshire has filed it’s own candidate for the Libertarian party. Bob Barr will still be on the ballot, but he will have competition, and it comes from more than just George Phillies (New Hampshire’s Libertarian candidate).  New Hampshire Libertarian [...]

New Hampshire Governor Let’s Another Bill Become Law Without his Signature
    2008-07-17 12:55:23
Teflon John (AKA Governor Lynch) is at it again. New Hampshire Democrats End Straight Ticket Voting

New Hampshire is a state that has had straight ticket voting for as long as I have been voting. I don’t know how long the practice has gone on. You simply check the box at the top of the ballot for the party you want to vote for and you are done.  In New Hampshire [...]

New Hampshire Governor Cuts Spending for the Mentally Ill

More on New Hampshire’s Budget Deficit (Governor Lynch Still Sucks)
    2008-06-11 18:15:42
Once again when writing about Governor Lynch I have to ask, does this sound like leadership to you? To deal with the state’s budget shortfall, the governor had proposed bonding $80 million of operating expenses. The House had quite sensibly rejected borrowing money to solve the budget mess. The governor, to whose popularity most of them [...]

    2008-02-10 07:47:28
Cross posted at Grizzly Groundswell The Union Leader recently ran this article about some questionable mailings that Rep. Paul Hodes (D-2nd district) and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-1st district) sent out. A follow up article can be read here.   There would normally be nothing wrong with sending out these mailers using taxpayers dollars. I said usually, but their is some controversy [...]

New Hampshire Fish and “Wildlife” Wants to Tax Hikers?

This is my third and final post today on the idiocy of New Hampshire lawmakers. I have to say that my blood is beginning to boil. It was so nice having our legislators on recess, but now they have come back with a fury and are looking to make up for lost time.  The point of [...]

New Hampshire Lawmakers to Debate a Beverage Sales Tax
    2008-01-16 18:33:47
New Hampshire lawmakers will be debating HB 503. This is a bill that will implement a sales tax on bottled water, soft drinks, energy drinks, and baby formula. Naturally the cowards won’t call it a tax, they prefer the term “fee”, but it is a tax.  They are using a cute little ploy to try and [...]

New Hampshire Governor John Lynch to Lawmakers “No New Spending”
    2008-01-16 18:01:30
As can be read here, New Hampshire governor, John Lynch has warned New Hampshire lawmakers not to pass any new spending this year. He claims he will veto any new spending bill because New Hampshire can’t afford it. Let me be the first to say thank you Governor Lynch. Yes, thank you for finally realizing [...]

Kucinich campaign pays for recount in New Hampshire
    2008-01-16 13:23:00
I'm all for counting votes accurately, and I like Dennis Kucinich, but seriously, WTF! CONCORD, N.H. -- The state on Wednesday began the process of recounting the Democratic ballots cast in last week's primary. Shortly before 8 a.m., the ballots that had been stored in Manchester were loaded onto hand trucks to begin the journey to Concord. The recount was requested by candidate Dennis Kucinich, who paid $27,000 to the secretary of state to begin the recount. "The big thing, I think, is to determine if the paper ballot count, the hand count, matches the machine totals," said Emmanuel Krasner, and observer for the Kucinich campaign. First of all, WHY? Less than two percent of the vote and, I'll "boldly" predict right now that this recount won't shift the balance more than a couple hundred votes (if that, because after all, this isn't Florida or Ohio). Second of all, I'd be interested to see how much cash the Kucinich campaign has on hand. They're not running advertisements, they're not really doing anything to get his message (which is one I actually like) out. Why not spend this money towards ads instead of trying to gain a couple of votes in New Hampshire?

New Hampshire to Recount Democrat Ballots Today
    2008-01-16 05:10:55
Dennis Kucinich has asked New Hampshire for a recount of the primary ballots, he handed over the money to pay for the costs, and today the re-count will begin. I am not sure what he hopes to accomplish, below is his statement: “Serious and credible reports, allegations, and rumors have surfaced in the past few days,” [...]

After New Hampshire: Where the Republicans Go From Here
    2008-01-10 15:15:00
The New Hampshire primaries have had a tremendous effect on the presidential race, as the results ensured that the major candidates will not be forced out quickly. An Obama victory would have severely wounded Clinton and forced her to enter Super Tuesday after losing Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina. A Romney victory would have eliminated McCain and made him even money against Huckabee. But this did not happen. Instead of delivering two knockout punches, New Hampshire delivered yet more jockeying and forced radical changes in political strategy. Romney, for example, has suspended his ad buys in South Carolina and is now concentrating on Michigan. And Clinton is retooling her message so that it's less about "I" and more about "we."So where do the candidates go from here? Here are my thoughts on the Republicans, whose race is as muddled as ever:John McCain is now in much better shape and has one of the easier paths to the nomination, in my estimation. McCain has the advantage of being the lone statesman in the field and he is unimpeachable when it comes to national security and Iraq. To his credit, he did not waver when it came to supporting the surge in Iraq and he can claim some independence in that he was not afraid to criticize the mission there when it wasn't going well. Independents and even moderate Democrats still view him as less conservative than he really is, and they have a lot of respect for him. This would suggest a great level of crossover appeal in a general election.McCain won the Michigan primary in 2000, so he is obviously a well known and highly regarded candidate in the state. Voters who may have been worried about his electability should have had those fears vanquished by his strong showing in New Hampshire. However, he will be going against Romney, whose father was a popular governor there. Romney is wounded, but I think he still has the inside track to victory there. McCain probably needs to place at least a close

Out Of New Hampshire: The Race Is On
    2008-01-09 11:57:14
Wow. What a difference a few hours can make! Going into tonight, many were writing the Clinton campaign obituary and now she is perhaps the favorite again. The Obama campaign expected to win. Heck, even the Clinton campaign expected Obama to win. All the pundits, Political Realm included, were wrong and the race was turned on its head. How did Clinton do it? In New Hampshire, Clinton dominated the female vote, easily out-pacing Obama, who had won the group in Iowa. Whether that's the result of Clinton's near tears yesterday or a more open campaign that shifted focus somewhat, we don't know. The polling we've seen over the past few days gave Obama a lead of nearly 10 points, but perhaps those numbers were simply soft. Perhaps there were a significant number of late deciders that broke for Clinton. Perhaps the questions raised about Obama's experience, record, and readiness to lead paid off for the Clinton campaign. Perhaps the voters of New Hampshire wanted this thing to turn into a race, rather than a coronation. In the end, it seems like we simply misjudged the state of the race. Obama was over-hyped out of Iowa, while everyone underestimated Clinton's superior organization, establishment backing, and appeal with voters in New Hampshire. Most suspected the vast number of independents would provide fertile soil for Obama, especially compared to Iowa. However, the number of first time participants was down tonight from Iowa and it's likely that those independents fit right into Clinton's target profile--blue collar workers. We do know one thing--the Clinton campaign won't badmouth New Hampshire as it did Iowa a few days ago.Of course, let's not get ahead of ourselves again. The narrative out of the first two contests is decidedly unclear. Barack Obama's Iowa victory was a huge shock to much of America. Will this Clinton win be as surprising? For political junkies, sure it is, but for the average voter who may not be as tuned in to this rac

Clinton and Obama: What happened in New Hampshire?
    2008-01-09 07:49:00
The results of the Iowa caucuses produced an absolute stunner last week when Barack Obama beat both Hillary Clinton and John Edwards by hefty margins. Not to be outdone, the New Hampshire primaries produced an even bigger stunner when Clinton somehow turned a roughly 7-12 point deficit in most tracking polls into a 3 point victory over Obama, the candidate who had all the momentum and enthusiasm. And this all happened in about a 24-hour span.Needless to say, there will be a flurry of "Comeback Kid: Part II" stories in the media to describe Clinton's improbable victory. However, because absolutely no one predicted this, something unforeseen was at work that nobody had picked up on.What on earth happened? Here are my theories theories, listed in no particular order:1. Stopping Barack Obama was more important than supporting Hillary Clinton. You all know the story. Obama is a first-term senator who recently left the Illinois state legislature. He has a brief resume and has often been criticized for not offering much specifics. His detractors have been clamoring about this for months, but he has never really been penalized for it. Perhaps New Hampshire voters viewed their primary as the last chance to put the brakes on this freight train before it left the station? Had Obama beaten Clinton as soundly as the polls suggested he would, Clinton would have been sent into a tailspin and would have had to endure certain defeats in Nevada and South Carolina before staging Super Tuesday as her Waterloo moment. Clinton's arguments about the importance of "experience" and Obama being "risky" may have had some resonance. Obama inspires voters to look for a healer, but Clinton reminds voters we are looking for a commander in chief. If this is what happened, this is a very potent line of attack that likely weighs heavily on the minds of many people. The Iowa caucuses eliminated all of the "experience" candidates on the Democratic side and there wasn't enough time for

Clinton Wins in New Hampshire, Obama: “Yes We Can!”
    2008-01-09 02:49:44
Senator Clinton defied the odds and the polls on Tuesday, defeating the new frontrunner Barack Obama. The Democratic primary is far from over after Clinton’s win in New Hampshire on Tuesday. After Obama won in Iowa he was expected to win by double digits in New Hampshire based on polls following the Iowa results. The Clinton campaign has been rejuvenated following the unexpected victory in a state in which she was supposed to loose handily. Nevada is now the next contest in what has become a two way race between Obama and Clinton. Edwards told supporters in his speech on Tuesday night after finishing a distant third that he was going no where and would continue his campaign to all 50 states. South Carolina will be the next major test for the candidates. South Carolina is the first major state with a large population of minorities. More than 50 percent of registered Democrats in South Carolina are African Americans. This is in sharp contrast to New Hampshire and Iowa where the population is mostly white. In Iowa 93 percent of the voters were white. The candidate who does the best among minorities will be successful in South Carolina. Obama currently has a 13 point lead in South Carolina according to the Real Clear Politics poll average. Clinton will likely close the gap after winning in New Hampshire and Nevada where she has a 20 point lead. Barack Obama’s speech following the New Hampshire primary sounded less like a concession speech and more like a new call to America. The powerful speech took the phrase of Cesar Chavez ("Si Se Puede" or "Yes We Can") in response to the growing difficulties that we face as a nation. The speech resonated of John F. Kennedy’s, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” speech from the 1961 inauguration. Obama called on America to come together and help fix the problems that loom in this country. Some thought it might be difficult for

    Clinton Clinches New Hampshire
    2008-01-09 00:42:07
It was an exceedingly close victory though Clinton's 39% to Obama's 37%From ABC News: Sen. Hillary Clinton has narrowly won the New Hampshire primary, becoming the first woman -- and the first-ever former first lady -- to win the first-in-the-nation contest. Clinton beat out Sen. Barack Obama, who, riding a wave of momentum from his Iowa caucus victory, battled for a close second place in the Granite State. Never thought to be a major factor in New Hampshire, former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards came in a distant third in the state and will now focus his limited resources on South Carolina, where he won in 2004....The tight race has also secured Obama as a formidable opponent for Clinton, setting up what may become a bloody political battle between the two Democratic rivals going into the big-state primaries Feb. 5.Man if this had been a football game Clinton won it by a field goal. Despite the loss Obama has shown that he is capable of effectively competing with Clinton. That'll mean a lot going into South Carolina where I believe concerns about his electability originally kept him polling low. I expect SC to be a close race but I believe Obama has a good chance of pulling it off. On the republican side McCain finally had his day beating Romney by a five percent margin. My question is can McCain win anywhere else? What been odd is watching the media cover this. Both CNN and Fox news commentators called Clinton's win an upset. First they called her inevitable, then kicked her while she was down for a week after her Iowa loss, and now they are trumpeting her previously predicted win as an upset. Looks like the media only loves you when you're winning Mrs. Clinton.

    New Hampshire Primary Results
    2008-01-09 00:03:30
Turnout has reportedly been heavy, while exit polling has offered mixed signals. The results should be rolling in soon and we'll update this post as we go along.Current Results: Democrats (95% Reporting)Hillary Clinton 39Barack Obama 37John Edwards 17Bill Richardson 5Dennis Kucinich 1Current Results: Republicans (95% Reporting)John McCain 37Mitt Romney 32Mike Huckabee 11Rudy Giuliani 9Ron Paul 8Fred Thompson 1New Hampshire offers 30 delegates to the Democrats and 12 for Republicans.Notes• [7:00PM CST] CNN has called that Edwards will finish 3rd based on exit polling.• [7:06PM CST] Yes, it's early, but it's interesting to see Clinton keeping pace/leading Obama at this point.• [7:13PM CST] CNN projects McCain the Republican winner. To do so this early means that he must have won at least somewhat comfortably. A sizable margin would be a big blow for Romney, who sounded very optimistic today.• [7:16PM CST] I just finished looking at the early exit poll data and it shows a much tighter race for the Democrats than I expected. Did Obama's young voters head to the polls late or will this be tight all night long?• [8:44PM CST] Democrats are expected to set a turnout record with around 280,000. Republicans, however, are behind previous highs with around 220,000. More signs for the general election?• [9:11PM CST] I thought these numbers were supposed to come in faster than those in Iowa. What gives?• [9:19PM CST] Clinton still holds a lead and looking at the map, I'm not sure Obama can make up the ground. Even if he does, the story will still likely be Clinton as the "Comeback Kid" again. Why is Clinton so much closer tonight? She's doing much better with women and more of the independents may have gone to John McCain than expected.• [9:34PM CST] Associated Press calls race for Hillary Clinton. Wow.• [9:54PM CST] Every major news organization has now called it for Clinton. What a difference a few hours can make.• [10:06PM CST] Obama conce

    McCain Delivers in New Hampshire
    2008-01-08 22:01:15
John McCain has came back in a campaign where he had no money left and very little support, to win New Hampshire. On Tuesday night John McCain defeated Mitt Romney who came in second in the New Hampshire primary. McCain won New Hampshire in 2000 over George W. Bush and that may have helped him win on Tuesday. McCain does well among Independents and more than 45 percent of voters in New Hampshire are registered “undeclared”. Independents were key to McCain’s victory on Tuesday and the Republican race will continue to go on. Ron Paul had 8 percent of the vote almost matching Rudy Giuliani’s 9 percent. Mike Huckabee finished with 12 percent. Mitt Romney finished second with 32 percent. McCain won by 5 percent as of 10:45 PM (EST) with 37 percent. In a hilariously embarrassing defeat, Fred Thompson lost to the total number of write-in candidates. McCain 37% Romney 32% Huckabee 11% Giuliani 9% Paul 8% Total Write-ins 2% Thompson 1% Hunter 1%
