| | New York Giants notebook, 08.23 | | 2008-08-23 05:00:08 | | OK, we had our fun Friday at the expense of the New York Jets. Today, it's back to the business of discussing what is going on around our New York Giants.
Lawrence Tynes had exploratory surgery on his injured knee Friday, and no structural damage was found. That means Tynes could be back kicking with the Giants at some point this season, and that is good news considering the alternatives -- Jay Feely, Mike Vanderjagt, Billy Cundiff, etc. Personally, I think Josh Huston can hold down the job until Tynes returns.
Giants' linebacker Antonio Pierce figures Brett Favre might be suprised by how he is treated by Jets fans if he struggles.
"The crowd can be in frenzy all it wants. But if Favre starts off 0-2 and throws a few interceptions, they’ll give up on him in New York real quick. And I think everyone knows what I’m talking about." Pierce was referring to the Giants’ 0-2 start last year when everyone was on the defense after it all | | By: Big Blue View

This is one of the outdoor water gardens that are inside the courtyard of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory in the Bronx. It is considered the largest Victorian glasshouse in the United States (it is huge). It is easy to get some nice Lotus and Water Lily photos, even with a short lens since many of the plants are growing close to the edge of the pools. Here is a closer shot of the Lotus flowers in the foreground. I used my 17-70mm Sigma lens with a circular polarizer.I am working up in Hyde Park today and have to leave early since it is a long drive. The garden and the surrounding farm are worth the trip. | | New York: One Small Step Closer to Fiscal Solvency | | 2008-08-11 23:00:00 | | Governor David Paterson proposed roughly $1 billion in budget cuts to resolve New York State's current budget crisis. The state legislature will consider the proposal during an emergency session focused on the $6.4 billion deficit. The New York Times reports the Governor's proposals:The plan Mr. Paterson presented on Monday included a 6 percent reduction in the financial assistance the state provides to local governments, a move that the governor said would save $250 million this year. It also included a 50 percent reduction in the discretionary funding available to the governor and the legislature for pet projects, which could save $100 million. But the biggest chunk of money the governor proposed saving would come from a $506 million cut in the proposed increase for Medicaid spending. Under the governor's proposal, Medicaid spending growth this year would fall to 1.7 percent from the currently budgeted increase of 4 percent. The governor would achieve that by reducing spending increase | | By: Tax Policy Blog

| | Did the Jets move back to New York without telling anyone? | | 2008-08-10 08:46:00 | | Somehow, it seems like the Jets moved back to New York. And it seemed the same a few months ago when the Giants, who haven't played in New York since 1975, paraded their way down the Canyon of Heroes a few days after they won the Super Bowl.
Last week, new Jets quarterback Brett Favre took part in a press conference with New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. The mayor gave Favre a "Broadway" sign, reminiscent of the days of "Broadway Joe" Namath.
Here's a video of the event from the New York Daily News. Wonder when Brett will be meeting with the mayor of East Rutherford?

And the Red Sox will have a familiar bat in the lineup for the first time in what seems like ages. His name is David Ortiz, but we know him better as Big Papi. OUR Big Papi. What an ovation he'll get when he strides to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. In fact, I'll be standing too, hands banging together with a huge smile on my face! His teammate, JD Drew, had this to say about Big Papi's return...“It’s like getting a huge trade at the deadline,” Drew said. “It’s David Ortiz. You’re not going to take that for granted for sure.”“We’re in a fighting position without one of the two biggest pieces of the lineup,” he said. The timing couldn't be any better for a big bat and a huge personality to return for the rest of the season and (hop | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever

| | American Airlines Case in New York Highlights Problems with Hotel Taxes | | 2008-07-22 23:00:00 | | If you've stayed in a hotel room in the United States, you probably paid tax on it. Not just your share of the hotel's property tax and income taxes (embedded in the price), and not even the sales tax imposed on the transaction. Virtually every city (or other local government unit) imposes a separate (higher) tax on hotel stays. Today at the National Conference of State Legislators in New Orleans, one speaker referred to raising hotel taxes as a great way to raise new revenue "without taxing your own folks." That's certainly true in a narrow parochial sense. But when everyone imposes a huge tax on hotel rooms, we're all taxing each other. Take New York City for instance, according to an editorial in yesterday's New York Sun: A $200 a night hotel room in the city is already subject to an 8.375% city and state sales and use tax - $16.75. There's a $1.50 a room tax on top of that to pay for the "Javits Center Expansion," which has not happened and doesn't ha | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| | I Love New York | | 2008-07-22 13:41:00 | | Originally we had planned to go to Paris on our annual leave this year. I found a fabulous apartment in La Marais from Thierry at Paris Best Lodge and we were all ready. then we had some family guilt trips about seeing relatives who are very old (my dad is 82!) and the dollar dropped.Suddenly round trip airfare for the two of us was running over $3400 and one euro costs $1.60 us. So I looked at Tony and said, "In NY we can eat great food, go shopping, see movies, see Broadway shows, and get some bang for our buck. Plus I can see my family and assuage some guilt. So I found round trip direct flight airfare to JFK at AA.com for only $1120 for both of us, a great apartment at 1 River Place through VRBO, and we are officially going to the Big Apple for 4 weeks! | | Fox News Alters and Distorts Photos of New York Times Reporters | | 2008-07-04 08:00:16 | | Media Matters for America, a progressive media watch dog group, discovered that during a Fox News broadcast that they had been distorting the faces of New York Times reporters. Fox News, angry about reports Jacques Steinberg had written in the New York Times while working under Steve Reddicliffe, altered their photos for broadcast. Fox claimed that Reddicliffe has had an axe to grind with Fox for being fired from a company that Fox owns, “TV Guide”. During “Fox and Friends” on July 2, Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade hosted the segment in which they called the two reporters “attack dogs”. Fox took the two reporter’s photos, which had been digitally altered, then superimposed them on a poodle and a man holding the dog on a leash. The pictures of the two reporters had yellowed teeth, enlarged noses or thinned noses, hairlines adjusted, and other facial features altered.

| | Around the AFC East, Week 5: New York Jets | | 2008-06-20 06:00:01
It's Friday, and with the penultimate day of the week, we bring to you another round of Around the AFC East. We're pleased to be joined once again this morning Brian Bassett, head writer of The Jets Blog, to learn a little more about our green-and-white clad enemies prior to the start of the 2008 season. Today's topic: second-year cornerback Darrelle Revis.
In the 2007 draft, the Bills reportedly seriously considered three players with the #12 pick - RB Marshawn Lynch (whom they selected), LB Paul Posluszny (whom they would later draft at #34), and CB Darrelle Revis. What are your thoughts on Revis' rookie year as a Jet? With a year under his belt, can he make strides toward becoming one of the league's better corners?
The Jets Blog: I got the pleasure to interview him briefly on Draft Day this year, which you can watch me gush over him. Revis earned the nickname "Baby Lockdown" last year from teammate Kerry Rhodes | | By: Buffalo Rumblings

| | | Abu Dhabi fund looking to buy New York's iconic Chrysler Building for $800 million news | | 2008-06-15 00:25:00 | | Just last month, the GM Building and three other properties were sold for nearly $3.95 billion by Macklowe Properties to a group of investors, including the wealth funds of Kuwait and Qatar and Boston Properties. The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco skyscraper in New York City, located on the east side of Manhattan at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. Standing at 319 metres (1,047 ft), it was briefly the world's tallest building before the Empire State Building surpassed it in 1931. However, the Chrysler Building remains the world's tallest brick building. After the destruction of the World Trade Center, it was again the second-tallest building in New York City until December 2007, when the spire was raised on the 365.8-metre (1,200 ft) Bank of America building, pushing the Chrysler Building into third position. In addition, the New York Times Building, which opened in 2007, is exactly tied with the Chrysler Building in height.

| | 9-11 And The New York Stock Exchange | | 2008-06-14 09:11:36 | | Maybe no event in American history was as dramatic as the attacks of September 11, 2001. When the attack on Pearl Harbor happened, we had live radio broadcasts bringing updates, and the next days newspaper how photographs of the carnage, but with 9/11, we had live, crystal clear television pictures beamed right into our living rooms. While we still take pause to think of that horrendous day, the world’s financial markets took a hit like they never have before as the ripple effect from Ground Zero was felt all around the world. When the attacks happened, and because of how close the World Trade Centers were located to Wall Street, trading wasn’t even started. Everyone that had shown up to work that day was told to stay inside until it was safe. Many people inside the exchange reported feeling the ground shake as the two towers collapsed, and the exchange became a refuge for those fleeing the giant cloud of dust, smoke and debris that appeared once the towers fell. The buildings that h | | By: Finance fantasy | | |

| | New Tax Foundation Study Analyzes New York Property Tax Reform Proposal | | 2008-06-10 23:00:00 | | Across the country people are upset about property taxes, and New York is no exception. In fact, New York State has some of the highest property taxes in the nation. But it looks like there might soon be some improvements to the state's property tax system. A new Tax Foundation Fiscal Fact analyzes the recommendations in a report recently issued by the New York State Commission on Property Tax Relief. The bipartisan panel was established last year by Governor Eliot Spitzer to propose solutions to rein in ballooning property taxes while maintaining the state's commitment to public education. Here's an excerpt from the Fiscal Fact, "Sound Tax Policy Coming to New York (?)," by Josh Barro:We've only preliminarily reviewed the Commission's report, but on balance it appears to contain a good set of recommendations. The proposals appear to improve an existing property tax rebate program that rewards school districts for raising taxes; provide a meaningful cap on property tax levies | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |
