    2008-08-09 18:43:00
Well, while I'm on the vigilante kick, here's another one you might have actually heard of. He calls himself Jimmy Justice, and one thing ticks him off: New York City officials who abuse their authority to park their cars and to make illegal maneuvers in their city-issued cars. Watch one of his videos ... he backs down to no one. Jimmy Justice has been featured all over the place, on MSNBC, NBC, CBS and more. Here's just one of his videos — you'll find plenty more on YouTube. This one's even better (below)!

The Boston Red Sox Roll On. Next Stop? NEW YORK CITY, JUST LIKE I PICTURED IT!
    2008-04-16 04:31:00
Ok, OK, I borrowed a line from Stevie Wonder's 1976 song LIVING IN THE CITY for part of the title (the part in caps). The Boston Red Sox are flat out playing good baseball. All phases of their game have improved since the first rough days of the season, and the ninth inning home run has saved them more than once lately. Take last night, for example. Jason Varitek hit a 9th inning tie-breaking solo home run, putting the Sox ahead for good. They tacked on another run in that final frame and Hideki Okajima made the victory official with a clean, two strikeout ninth. Tim Wakefield was great again, going six full and allowing only two runs on seven hits, walking four and whiffing the same number. A quality start yet again. Lopez and Delcarmen, neither sharp, followed Wakes. Aardsma finished the 8th and set the way for the Darkman's ninth. My goodness! Great job out of the 'pen. 'Tek had this to say after his winning clout...“I’ve had my fair share of appearances as a pinch-hitter over

Subaru to test R1e electric car in New York City
    2008-03-25 12:22:53
Subaru to test R1e electric car in New York City At the New York Auto Show last week, Subaru announced it would begin testing its R1e electric vehicle in conjunction with the New York Power Authority this summer. Two of the R1e vehicles will join the NYPA fleet, promising a 50-mile range that costs less than $2 in electricity, a 65 mph top speed and an 80-percent recharge in just 15 minutes. The two-seater is powered by advanced lithium ion batteries that do not suffer from charge memory loss like typical lithium ion batteries, allowing partial charges without adverse effects on their longevity. A full charge takes eight hours via a standard household electrical outlet. The batteries power a 40 kW (about 54 horsepower) AC permanent magnet synchronized motor that drives all wheels, in typical Subaru fashion. “Subaru’s goal is to become the leading brand in the electric vehicle market,” said Ikuo Mori, Fuji Heavy Industries president. Similar testing has been in Japan sinc

New York City’s uncertain real estate market
    2008-02-17 16:29:00
Jonathan Miller, the executive vice president and director of research at Radar Logic, a real estate research company, said that such apartments make up more than half of the Manhattan sales market. In the fourth quarter of 2007, 55 percent of the 2,518 apartments sold in Manhattan were studios and one-bedrooms.That, in turn, is good news for many sellers, who are happy to find purchasers not obliged to sell their own home before buying a new one.Conversely, first-time buyers who run into snags and delay closings can hold up the sellers. “It plays a very important role in the health of the real estate market,” Mr. Miller said. If first-time buyers are “having a hard time, then all segments are having a hard time.”

No one is predicting that 2008 will be a repeat of 2007. The sprawling pieds-à-terre may still sell for millions at the Plaza and 15 Central Park West, but in general, economists are predicting that prices will drop in some segments of the market and in some neighborhoods around the city.“New York has had a very good run, and there are still a lot of people sitting around with cash,” said Christopher Mayer, the Paul Milstein professor of real estate at Columbia Business School. “But that doesn’t last forever.”

Fire Isiah! New York City Council Threatens Madison Square Garden's Property Tax Exemption
    2008-01-07 00:00:00
The NY Times reports that the New York City Council is threatening to take away the property tax exemption for the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden (MSG). This comes at a time when the Garden's biggest tenant is involved in scandal after scandal, not including the way the team is performing on the court, which could also be called a scandal. While this move to take away a property tax exemption for the Garden is a step in the right direction in terms of public finance, the timing makes you realize that special tax provisions are always dependent upon the mercy of government officials. Government officials can giveth and taketh away tax credits, often for reasons that are arbitrary and in many cases downright ridiculous. To some degree, this may be one of them. While one city council member says the Knicks' performance on the court is not the main reason for this action, the Times quote suggests it could be playing some role:“I’m not going to be s

Introducing New York City F.C. And The Borough Boys
    2007-11-23 09:41:00
Talk of a second MLS team in the New York area is about as old as the league itself. Until very recently, talk (more like speculation or gossip) was all it ever amounted to. No longer. In this year's state of the league address, MLS Commissioner Don Garber confirmed that the Wilpon family, owners of the Mets, are indeed seeking a second team for the New York metropolitan area. If I'm not mistaken that was the very first time Garber has publicly acknowledged these efforts.Enter the Borough Boys, a fledgling fan club and de-facto lobbying organization for the hypothetical team, which they have preemptively named New York City, F.C. Being a NYC resident myself, I was intrigued and was able to locate one of the group's co-founders via the Big Soccer sewing circle. What follows is the outcome of our exchange: Soccer Source: So tell me about your organization and wha

New York City Metro Area Hit Hardest by AMT
    2007-09-25 07:00:00
The Tax Foundation has posted new tables to its website that show where the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) hits hardest. Specifically, there are three new tables that show the impact of AMT by county, by congressional district and by major city area. The county table looks very similar to the property tax by county table that was released two weeks ago. This is largely due to the fact that AMT disallows the deduction for state and local taxes paid, including property taxes. Another reason is that the demographics of those living in areas with high taxes on owner-occupied housing tend to be similar to those who are in the prime AMT zone (making between $200,000 and $500,000).The top 10 congressional districts in terms of percentage of returns hit by AMT in 2005 are listed here:Member, Party, & DistrictPercentage of Returns Paying AMT Rank Average AMT per AMT Return  Lowey (D-NY 18) 15.05% 1 $6,204 Maloney (D-NY 14) 13.52% 2 $12,9

NYC first timer: always looking up. The City makes all other cities flat. It's truly three dimensional with height being it's main direction. Buildings go up, up, up. And so does first timer's gaze.

The New (York City) Anti-Semitism: Reinstate Debbie Almontaser to the Kahlil Gibran International Academy
    2007-08-31 21:28:40
Any intelligent observer can easily discern that the “new” anti-semitism today has little connection with discrimination against Jews. Anti-semitism nowadays is mostly about deplorable discrimination and racist attacks against Arabs. Right now in New York, the Likudnik thought police are trying their darndest to designate Arabic words like intifada and madrassa (which simply means ’school’ in Arabic, regardless of religious affiliation) treasonous. Madrassa does not mean ‘religious‘ school. We see this playing out in the trumped-up brouhaha about the Kahlil Gibran International Academy, wherein Debbie Almontaser, the head, was branded a terrorist for not apologising enough (for the Likud-Zionists’s liking) about the word ‘intifada’ (which simply means ’shaking off’) on a T-Shirt–worn by someone else! The racist bullying and defamation resulted in Almontaser resigning. This reflects poorly on NYC, which has a rich history of cosmopolitanism, the same American tradi

Arabic Public School Opening Among Protest in New York City
    2007-08-21 21:42:13
To me there is a definite reason to protest the opening of this particular school since it seems to me that if a public school is theme-based, it should no longer be qualified as a public school but a private school and thus should not be funded by the United States government OR the state of New York. If the Arab community wishes to fund a school that will have an Arab-based curriculum, then it stands to reason that the Arab community should be obtaining private funding for this school. READ ABOUT THIS HEREPractice non-violence in your lives. You will be leaving your children a beautiful legacy.

New York City real estate prices have increased from the beginning of the year
    2007-08-19 00:26:00
The average price of Manhattan apartments has also shown some gains from the beginning of this year, though it is down a little from a year ago. The average price in the second quarter was $1.33 million, which is an 8% increase from the beginning of the year. According to a report from appraisal firm Miller Samuel, as noted in The Real Deal, Manhattan sales numbers jumped dramatically from a year ago. Looking at these numbers, it looks as if the city’s residential sales are continuing to show a good market. The number of Manhattan sales jumped in the second quarter of 2007, from 1,934 a year ago to 3,939 transactions this year. That number also shows a 13.4% jump from the first quarter of this year.

New-York City May Seek Permit and Insurance for Many Kinds of Public Photography
    2007-06-29 17:25:10
From the New-York Times June 29, 2007 By Ray Rivera Some tourists, amateur photographers, even would-be filmmakers hoping to make it big on YouTube could soon be forced to obtain a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance before taking pictures or filming on city property, including sidewalks. New rules being considered by the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting would require any group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a single public location for more than a half hour to get a city permit and insurance. The same requirements would apply to any group of five or more people who plan to use a tripod in a public location for more than 10 minutes, including the time it takes to set up the equipment. The “Greening” of New York City Real Estate
    2007-06-11 00:03:00
In the 60s, the city began to live beyond its means, offering generous wage and benefit packages to unionized workers, and spending too much on welfare and other public services. Its coffers drained, the city by the early 70s had turned to the short-term bond market to cover everyday expenses. Sensing trouble, Wall Street cut the city off.

Bachelor Party Weekend in New York City
    2007-05-29 03:00:47
After my first four days of leadership training wrapped up in Richmond, VA last Friday afternoon, I sped up Rt 95 at 80 mph, exchanged my duffel bag for my backpack, and caught an Amtrak train to New York City for the holiday weekend. Friday night was spent with the bachelor (my friend Chris), his brother, Kai, and another long time friend. We started at a nearby midtown bar, and ended at a typical gentleman’s club. The impromptu events of the night wrapped up at 3 am, serving as a good appetizer for Saturday’s main events. After too little sleep, we awoke and met up with the full group of guys (~10) at Stan’s Sport Bar across the street from Yankee Stadium. We did our best to finish a keg of Miller Light before heading up to our seats high above the third base line. As it turned out, we were in a “no alcohol” seating section (no sales, no drinking), and it didn’t take us long to find out the rule is enforced. A few guys spent almost the whole g

New York City Declares War On Good Food
    2006-10-29 14:12:00
New York City Declares War On Good Food It looks like the bibs are coming off in New York City. The thing that advocates of good food have long feared is about to happen; New York City will be the first to ban trans fatty acids. Know why McDonald's fries tasted better when you were a kid? Trans fatty acids - and a lot of salt. Do they taste as good today? Of course not. The only people who
