The transaction trims the club’s 40-man roster to just 39 players, and creates room for the [...]...

Less than 24 hours after learning that the Texas Rangers had lost the Kosuke Fukudome sweepstakes to the upstart Chicago Cubs, general manager Jon Daniels pulled the trigger on two separate roster moves as Wednesday evening’s 11 PM CST non-tender deadline drew near. While one of those moves was hinted at by the organization for what [...]...

    2007-12-09 11:37:26
After weeks of speculation and discussion, Jon Daniels and the Texas Rangers finally pulled the trigger on their first free agent splash of the off-season on Sunday. And curiously enough, it’s a splash that nobody apparently saw coming. Numerous media sources, including Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News and T.R. 2007-12-05 17:32:48
2:10 AM Update: OK, so those thoughts on Shelton aren’t forthcoming anymore tonight. As far as the roster situation surrounding Thursday morning’s 9:00 AM CST Rule V draft is concerned, Jamey Newberg weighed in on Wednesday evening with some information that conflicts with what I published below: Shelton had been designated for assignment by the Tigers several [...]...

Per Richard Durrett of the Dallas Morning News, the Texas Rangers have reinstated four players from the 60-day disabled list: right-handers Willie Eyre, Akinori Otsuka, and Josh Rupe, as well as shortstop Joaquin Arias. To make room on the 40-man roster for these latest additions, the Rangers have outrighted Eyre, right-hander Mike Wood, outfielder Kevin Mahar [...]...

NEWSFLASH: Barry Manilow Is A Candy Ass. . . .
    2007-09-19 18:30:25
Barry Manilow has canceled his appearance on “The View” because the show refused to bow to his demands that its only conservative, Elizabeth Hasselbeck, not be on the show.Apparently Mr. Manilow finds Hasselbeck's opinions "dangerous." I'm sorry but what a spineless candy ass. He's afraid of Elizabeth Hasselbeck? Please. Was he supposed to talk politics on this show? NO. He was supposed to perform one of his candy ass songs to the same 50 people that go to all his shows.Regardless of your political orientation you must agree that this is pathetic. The attractive Hasselbeck can hardly be viewed as "dangerous" when sitting next to loony Whoopie Goldberg and the 3rd-rate Joy Behar (how is this woman famous?).I have to say I'm actually surprised by this. While liberals usually avoid debate with conservatives (because they have no facts) this wasn't even a debate, this was a performance he was supposed to do. I guess the show doesn't go on for Barry Manilow. Now liberals are always avoid...

Mendoza, now 23, went 15-4 with a 3.93 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 93 strikeouts and 148.2 innings with the Roughriders in 2007. He was acquired last July 30th from the Red Sox [...]...

NEWSFLASH: Loe To DL, Wood Called Up
    2007-08-04 08:09:58
Per the DMN’s Richard Durrett, starter Kameron Loe has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 30th) with what is being described as a “sore lower back.” He originally injured his back during a bullpen session on Wednesday; while he’ll miss his next two starts, it doesn’t sound like it will be a long-term issue: “I’ve had back pain there before, but it hasn’t forced me to miss a start,” Loe said. “Better safe than sorry at this point. But my back felt better today, so I’ll be OK.” Making Loe’s previously scheduled start on Saturday is Mike Wood, who threw 81 pitches during an eight-inning performance on Wednesday for Triple-A Oklahoma. No doubt, the bullpen will waiting for an early call on Saturday night. Pitching coach Mark Connor says not to read too much into Vicente Padilla’s poor first inning during his rehab start for Double-A Frisco on Thursday night, because the unsuitable...

NEWSFLASH: Littleton Up, Feldman Down; Botts Recalled?
    2007-08-01 23:30:53
Lost in the excitement of yesterday’s trade deadline madness were several fairly significant 25-man roster moves made by the Rangers: Left-handers A.J. Murray and Kason Gabbard took the spots of Ron Mahay and Eric Gagne, while Jarrod Saltalamacchia obviously took the place of Mark Teixeira. In addition, Desi Relaford was designated for assignment, and Ian Kinsler was activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing four weeks with a stress fracture in his left foot. According to today’s Oklahoma Redhawks game notes, right-hander Wes Littleton has been recalled from AAA, while Scott Feldman has been optioned back to the minors. And finally, per ESPN 103.3 FM’s Randy Galloway, the Rangers are reportedly calling up Jason Botts from Triple-A Oklahoma, and are going to bat him in tonight’s lineup. I’m not sure what the corresponding 25-man roster move would be here, though; could Jerry Hairston Jr. be DFAed? The Rangers are apparently moving Jamey Wright t...

    NEWSFLASH: Teixeira To Atlanta Done
    2007-07-30 18:25:31
Wow. It’s finally happened. Per Dave Sessions and Jim Reeves of the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, Mark Teixeira has been traded to the Atlanta Braves, along with left-handed reliever Ron Mahay, for catcher/first baseman Jarrod Saltalamacchia, shortstop Elvis Andrus, right-handed pitching prospect Neftali Feliz, and a second pitching prospect to be determined. Much more on this in the coming hours, including a complete breakdown of each player on the Atlanta side of the equation, and my views on the whole situation. 11:40 AM Update: Per Ken Rosenthal, left-hander Matt Harrison is indeed the second pitcher in the deal, after undergoing an MRI which showed no structural damage to his injured left shoulder. So, it’s Teixeira/Mahay for Saltalamacchia/Andrus/Harrison/Feliz. 12:50 PM Update: Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News confirms Saltalamacchia/Andrus/Feliz, but is saying that the 4th player is a PTBNL at this time. Ken Rosenthal has backed off of the Harrison report, saying t...

    NEWSFLASH: Tejeda Optioned, Rheinecker Recalled
    2007-07-24 02:07:29
Well, that didn’t take long. Per the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers have optioned right-hander Robinson Tejeda to Triple-A Oklahoma, and have recalled left-hander John Rheinecker, who will start Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader versus Seattle. Despite making 19 starts this season, Tejeda has pitched just 95.1 innings this year, which is short of the 98 innings required to qualify for the league leaderboards. If you pretend that 95.1 IP is enough to qualify, however, you’ll find that Tejeda’s 6.61 ERA is good for dead last in all of baseball, with Ervin Santana’s 6.22 ERA coming in one spot ahead of him at #89. Also on the bottom 10 list: Kameron Loe (who does barely qualify with 104.1 IP, but has a 5.69 ERA), Kip Wells (5.75 ERA) and Adam Eaton (5.84 ERA). A few other fun statistical facts: Tejeda’s WHIP ratio is 1.78 on the year, and if you again pretend that he has enough innings pitched to qualify, you’ll find he’s also dead last in ...

NEWSFLASH: Laird Exits Game After HBP
    2007-07-23 03:32:12
During the bottom of the 2nd inning of tonight’s Indians/Rangers game, Cleveland right-hander Paul Byrd hit Gerald Laird on what appeared to be either his left hand or wrist. Laird went down immediately, screaming in pain and rolling around on the ground. Trainer Jamie Reed came out to help him off the field; Gerald stumbled as he headed towards the dugout, a result of what I can only imagine as a tremendous amount of pain. Needless to say, Laird’s likely out for at least six weeks, and will probably miss the remainder of the season. There’s no doubt that his freak injury (torn ligament in left thumb) on May 20th, 2004 has had a serious negative impact on his major league career; by the time he was activated on July 24th, Rod Barajas was firmly entrenched as the Rangers starting catcher, and would remain so through the end of 2006. To be sure, Gerald hasn’t had a real great season thus far at the plate, batting .233/.291/.349 in 275 AB. But Laird was in the mids...

    NEWSFLASH: Lofton Injured, Exits Game
    2007-07-21 03:33:25
With two men on and nobody out in the bottom of the 3rd inning of tonight’s game, center fielder Kenny Lofton fouled an 0-1 pitch from Fausto Carmona off of his right foot. After hobbling around in pain for several seconds, trainer Jamie Reed came out to help escort Lofton off the field into the clubhouse. Needless to say, this injury does not look good at all, and it appears Lofton may have broken his foot. If that’s the case, you can kiss the decent return that Lofton would have brought at the trade deadline good-bye. Ughhhhh. Desi Relaford came in to replace Lofton with an 0-2 count, and promptly grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to kill the Texas rally. Yep, same old Rangers baseball. UPDATE: Everybody can breathe a big sigh of relief. Victor Rojas on the KRLD radio broadcast just reported that the X-rays on Lofton’s foot came back negative, and that he’s been diagnosed with a “bruised big toe.” Assumedly, he’s day-to-day. I guess this was ...

NEWSFLASH: Otsuka To DL; Feldman Recalled
    2007-07-20 02:17:30
Per T.R. Sullivan, the Rangers have placed reliever Aki Otsuka on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 9th), and have called up right-hander Scott Feldman from Triple-A Oklahoma. An MRI performed today revealed that Aki still has inflammation in his sore right elbow, but that there is no structural damage, which is a very good sign. Otsuka would be eligible to return from the disabled list next Tuesday against Seattle, but it doesn’t appear he’ll be returning by then, as the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting the Rangers will rest Aki until Monday. He’ll play catch that day, and then progress to bullpen sessions and a rehab assignment if all goes well. Aki was pleased with the results of the MRI: “I’m relieved,” said Otsuka, who is 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA and four saves and has been the subject of recent trade speculation. “The ligament is a big problem but this is just a muscle and it needs rest.” There’s also a quote from ...

NEWSFLASH: McCarthy Activated, Kinsler To DL
    2007-07-02 22:48:04
Michael Young is the last man standing. Ian Kinsler became the third Rangers infielder to go on the 15-day disabled list this year, as an MRI in Dallas today showed that he had a stress fracture in his left foot. According to Evan Grant, Kinsler will be out at least three weeks. With Mark Teixeira and Hank Blalock already out for extended periods of time, that leaves Travis Metcalf, Michael Young, Ramon Vazquez and Brad Wilkerson as the club’s starting infield for the time being. The move is retroactive to June 28th, meaning that Kinsler would be eligible to be activated from the disabled list on July 13th, but it doesn’t sound like that’s going to be the case. With Kinsler removed from the 25-man roster, Brandon McCarthy has been activated from the disabled list, and will make tonight’s start against the Red Sox. Desi Relaford, who probably would have been designated for assignment had Kinsler’s foot improved, will stay on the roster as a backup infielder...

NEWSFLASH: Relaford Up, Feldman Optioned, Koronka DFAed
    2007-07-01 20:29:44
Huge win last night, with the offense and bullpen picking up Robinson Tejeda after he struggled through another lousy start. Unfortunately, things haven’t gone real well since the end of last night’s game. Jerry Hairston Jr. sprained his left knee in Saturday’s 5-4 win against the Red Sox, and is not in Sunday’s lineup. Ian Kinsler’s injured left foot is not improving, and to make matters worse, the Rangers are no longer certain what the injury actually is; the original diagnosis was plantar fasciitis , but there’s now concern that it could be a stress fracture, which would put Ian out for several weeks, at the least. Kinsler will have an MRI in Dallas on Monday. With Texas desperately needing an infielder, Desi Relaford has been called up from Triple-A Oklahoma. Desi hit .257/.340/.391 with 5 HR in 230 AB for the Redhawks this year. Right-hander Scott Feldman, who is 1-2 with a 6.67 ERA this year, has once again been optioned to Oklahoma in order t...

    NEWSFLASH: Padilla Headed To DL
    2007-06-25 01:26:41
According to Richad Durrett of the Dallas Morning News, right-hander Vicente Padilla is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a sore right triceps muscle. Durrett also notes that the injury has bothered Padilla since spring training, and that he was reluctant to go on the disabled list. Meanwhile, Anthony Andro of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram says that Padilla tried to throw a bullpen session on Sunday, but that pitching coach Mark Connor ended the session after talking with Padilla. Vicente would have made his next start on Tuesday in Detroit, against former Ranger Kenny Rogers. Ron Washington says that Joaquin Benoit, Willie Eyre or John Koronka could make the start in his place. Needless to say, this isn’t a good development for Padilla or the Rangers. It’s clear something has been wrong with him since the start of the season, and there’s a very real possibility that he’s headed for an appointment with Dr. James Andrews in the near future. Tommy John surger...

NEWSFLASH: Adam Melhuse traded to Texas
    2007-06-10 02:52:24
Per the Associated Press, the Oakland Athletics have traded catcher Adam Melhuse to the Texas Rangers for cash considerations. Apparently, the Rangers had expressed interest in acquiring Melhuse at least a month ago. The 35-year-old Melhuse appears set to become Gerald Laird’s backup catcher, with Chris Stewart probably going back to the minors to get more playing time. Melhuse is 6 for 26 at the plate this year with just one extra-base hit (a double), but with four walks as well. There’s also this quote worth noting from the AP story: “I’d have to think anywhere would be better than here,” Melhuse said before packing up his locker and saying goodbyes. “It’s weird, I’ve been here for five years now. I’m comfortable here but playing time is tough to come by for me. The other day I was joking with my agent, saying ‘I can barely feel a pulse anymore career-wise. Pretty soon, I’m going to flat line. It’s like I’m...

NEWSFLASH: Teixeira to DL, Loe to AAA
    2007-06-10 02:28:06
Per Jamey Newberg, the Texas Rangers have placed first baseman Mark Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list due to the strained left quadriceps muscle he sustained during the 6th inning of last night’s 9-6 win against the Milwaukee Brewers. In addition, #5 starter Kameron Loe has been optioned to AAA Oklahoma City, with the Rangers apparently wanting Loe to develop his breaking stuff more while he’s with the Redhawks. Taking their spots on the active roster are outfielder Brad Wilkerson, who has been activated from the 15-day disabled list, and third baseman Travis Metcalf, who has been recalled from Oklahoma City. There promises to be some fairly major fallout from these latest transactions. First of all, Teixeira’s consecutive games played streak has ended at 507, which had been the second longest streak among active players behind only Miguel Tejada whose streak sits at 1,142 consecutive games. Teixeira’s streak dated back to May 20th, 2004. Secondly, there&rsqu...

NEWSFLASH: It Gets Worse - Blalock Out 2-3 Months
    2007-05-19 01:00:34
WFAA.com is reporting that Rangers third baseman Hank Blalock will be out 2-3 months after having surgery for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. If Thoracic Outlet Syndrome sounds familiar to Rangers fans, it’s because Kenny Rogers had surgery for the same condition back in 2001. Blalock hopes to return to the Rangers lineup around the middle of August. Third Baseman Travis Metcalf has been recalled from AA Frisco and is headed to Houston for the series with the Astros. If Metcalf makes it in-time for tonight’s game, he will be activated tonight. If Metcalf does not make the start of the game, he will be activated tomorrow. I’m not sure things could get any worse for the Rangers right now, but maybe some youth will infuse the roster with a little bit of youthful exuberance. It can’t hurt. ...
