Next-Gen Audi A8 Expected Evolutionary Styling
    2008-08-14 10:25:00
A new Audi A8 is in the works but development is still in the early stages and so far only engineering test-mules wearing current-generation sheet metal have been sighted. This artist’s rendering shows a potential new look for the next A8, revealing a streamlined shape with new head and taillights and plenty of dramatic character lines. The chrome-laden front end of the current version will also likely be toned down somewhat for the next-generation, though the essential form of the car will remain more or less the same as most of the upgrades will be happening beneath the surface. The current Audi A8 has been on sale since 2003 and since that time has only received a minor facelift to keep it fresh alongside the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS and soon-to-be superseded BMW 7-series.However, the minor styling changes implemented during the recent facelift will have to soldier on for a few more years as the next-generation ‘D4’ A8 isn’t expected to make its international debut unti

Audi considering mid-engine layout for next-gen TT?
    2008-07-27 13:55:00
Audi's next-gen TT may be getting a significant re-design, with a mid-engine placement if the swirling speculation around the interwebs is true. Now in its second-generation, the TT sits on Volkswagen's PQ35 platform (shared with the Volkswagen Eos and Tiguan) meaning customers are offered a front-engine chassis with a front- or all-wheel drive powertrain. When stacked against the front-engine BMW Z4 and mid-engine Porsche Boxster/Cayman, the current Audi TT holds its own... but that isn't keeping Ingolstadt engineers content. They realize that if they switch to a mid-engine design, like the one found on the amazing Audi R8, balance and handling will improve. Plus, Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system can be tailored with even more rearward torque bias. The third-gen TT, however, isn't set to debut until 2013. With Porsche moving closer to purchasing Volkswagen, a long lead may work to Audi's advantage as they'll have to convince the automaker from Stuttgart that a mid-engine TT won't

Spy Shots: Next gen BMW Z4 snapped again on SoCal freeway
    2008-07-20 08:43:00
Our ever-vigilant readers have struck, proving yet again that in the age of the camera phone, almost anyone with a mobile device can emulate Jim Dunne, Brenda Priddy or Hans Lehmann. The latest capture we've received comes from reader Charlie Hung, who recently spotted this black roadster on a Southern California freeway. A quick inspection of the images reveals it to be the next-generation BMW Z4 that's been spotted periodically for some time now. The bodywork on BMW's latest offerings would suggest that the current Z4's flame surfacing will probably be radically toned down. Much of the contouring we see on this prototype is likely just camouflage. Underhood, we'll probably get the same powertrain lineup as the 3 Series, with the next M Roadster getting the M3's V8. Judging from the size of the rear window, the Z4 will probably pick up a retractable hard top as well. When the new Z4 debuts, BMW will move production from its current home Spartanburg, SC to Germany. Spartanburg will tak

Lexus cancels next-gen SC, Toyota cancels next Avalon
    2008-07-12 21:35:00
Sales of the bulbous Lexus SC 430, one of the vehicles that kick-started the current hardtop convertible fad in the U.S., have slowed so significantly that Toyota's luxury brand has reportedly canceled its replacement. The four-place, V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive vehicle never fit well into any specific niche, as it boasted neither the sportiness of the ragtop Jaguar XK and Porsche 911, nor the snob appeal of the BMW 6 Series. Through the first six months of this year, Lexus sold only 1,230 SC's, down 40% from last year. What fans the Lexus sport coupes/convertible does have need not worry, however, as the brand will be launching the much more potent (and substantially more impressive) LF-A supercar at some point in the future.According to Inside Line, the SC isnt the only Toyota product without a future. The Avalon entry-level Buick luxury sedan is also on the chopping block. Fans of the boring unpretentious Avalon can instead look forward to an extended-length version of the Camry se

Saab halts next 9-3 development, may radically downsize next-gen
    2008-05-11 08:44:00
Tougher emissions and fuel economy regulations in Europe and the United States have forced Saab to put the brakes on development of the next-generation 9-3. The current Saab 9-3 is built on GM's Epsilon platform. The next-gen model was set to be based on the longer and wider GM Epsilon II platform (used for the 2009 Saab 9-5). However, Saab and parent company General Motors are considering radically downsizing the model to fit GM's upcoming 'Global premium compact' platform - a size rivaling the Audi A3.GM design sources told Autocar that a smaller chassis would dictate new technologies to maximize interior room. These would include a slim modular roof assembly and slimmer doors with advanced side-impact technology. General Motors has also hinted that the new 9-3 could be manufactured in the United States. Many European automakers are feeling the impact a weak dollar is having on profits and, like BMW, are moving or increasing production in the States.[Source: Autocar]

BMW Returns To ALMS With Next-Gen BMW M3 By Anthony Fontanelle
    2008-02-16 14:26:09
Armed with an uber powerful sports car, BMW will be returning to American Le Mans Series in 2009. Powered by a 485 bhp eight cylinder engine, the fourth generation BMW M3, displayed at the Chicago Show, is especially engineered to compete in the 2009 ALMS. "With the sporting genes of the production BMW M3 being clearly evident, developing a racing version of the car was the next logical step. The fact that the road-going vehicle is fitted with a V8 engine as standard provided us with an ideal base. However, the BMW M3 is more than a race car, it has achieved legendary status amongst race fans across the globe. I am convinced that this unique story of the BMW M3 racing cars will now be expanded upon by the addition of further chapters," said BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. The next generation BMW M3, a high-performance sports car, is built by BMW M GmbH. BMW of North America, LLC will be partnering with Rahal Letterman Racing which is owned by the American motorsport icon Bobby R

    Next-gen Toyota Prius production delayed
    2007-06-15 23:06:50
Every automaker suffers obstacles in their ambitions to bring something revolutionary to our market. Toyota seems to have suffered that with their development of the next-generation Prius. The new Prius will be equipped with lithium-ion battery technology, which replaces the previous nickel-metal hydride battery. The lithium-ion battery would cost less and save a lot of weight, in which will improve the performance of the car and reduce the price. We speculated that the next Prius would be out by late next year, but sources say that could be pushed further to 2009. Apparently, the company developing the new battery, Matsushita Industrial, needs to tweak the battery a bit for safety concerns as well as how it will react during an accident or a fire. Next gen. BMW X3 to be built Stateside
    2007-05-16 01:05:56
Filed under: SUVs, Plants/Manufacturing, Crossovers/CUVs, BMW According to a Reuters report, BMW’s Spartanburg, NC plant will be taking on some additional duties when the new X3 is produced in the next few years. The plant, which currently builds the X5 and Z4 roadsters, will also be building the upcoming X6 CUV. Considering the plant has been somewhat underutilized - only rolling out 105,000 vehicles in 2006, when its capable of producing 200k units - seems like a good fit, especially since the move would negate the serious currency fluctuations that are plaguing other automakers. However, a German labor representative was none too happy about the announcement, citing that BMW’s Leipzig plant in Germany, which produces the 1- and 3-series, isn’t working to its full potential either.
